101: Learning the Basics of Balayage | Kenra Color

https://youtu.be/rgs3jX91tC0

#balayage #howtobalayage #hairpainting

Hi everyone, It's Cassie with Kenna Professional and today I'm gon na teach you Balayage, 101. Balayage is actually a French word that translates to `` sweeping motion ,''. So, while this is a technique, it's actually become one of the top requested services in the salon. Being an art form. Balayage gives us as colorists the opportunity to create beautifully blended, end results, but in a really creative application.. So, on my model today, I'm gon na show you guys all the basics to creating the perfect balayage and, if you've ever struggled with this application. This video is gon na be perfect for you.. In addition, I'll share some Pro Tips on how to truly perfect. All of your end results and consult with your client to get exactly what they want.. The most important step to achieving the perfect balayage service is the consultation.. So first I like to really determine my client's natural level, texture and density.. I also like to make sure that my clients are wearing their hair in the way they typically part it. So I can make sure my application matches that. In the consultation. There are additionally, a few questions. I like asking to make sure that what I do is exactly what my client is expecting.. The first question is, if my client has any picture references for what she's looking for., This helps me to make sure that 1 ), that balayage is the correct application for what she's expecting and 2 ). I can have that conversation about if it's realistic to achieve in one session.. The second question I like asking is if their ends are totally blonde and the desired end results.. If they are, that tells me I'm gon na do more full saturation on the ends to achieve a more solid look. If there's any dimension or depth throughout the ends. I know I'm gon na do more of a combination of surface and full saturation throughout the ends.. The third question I like asking is what type of maintenance my client is looking for. Balayage is a perfect application for a low maintenance grow-out, and I always like to take this opportunity to really assess how far up or how far down my client wants. The application to be. This will really help me determine what my application and what my balayage will actually look like throughout each subsection of her hair.. The fourth question I like asking is: what tonality my client is looking for.. If the end result, they're showing me is a very high contrast, end result: balayage might not be the best application for them.. However, if the end result in tonality is more natural beige and complements their natural skin tone and eye color, I know balayage is going to be a great service for them. The product I'm using is Kenra Color, Simply Blonde Clay Lightener.. This is my favorite product for any balayage service, because it has all the characteristics needed to create a perfect blend and a clean application.. The Clay Lightener maintains moisture on the inside, while creating an outer shell on the outside, making it great for open-air processing.. You can mix the Clay Lightener, 1:2 or 1:3 based on the viscosity. You prefer and it processes for 45 minutes.. Now, let's talk about sectioning.. This universal sectioning is what I use for most balayage applications --, it's clean super easy to work through and it's helped me cut my application time in half.. The first section is a top horseshoe section. -- you're definitely going to want to shift this to your client's part and how their hair naturally falls.. This is also rounded to complement the natural shape of the head, making sure that the end result is really seamless.. In this section we're going to work in diagonal subsections., The second sections are the sides., We're again going to use curved lines going from the back center of the top horseshoe down to about the top center of the ear. Within these sections, we'll be working in diagonal. Subsections as well., The third section is the rest of the hair, which all falls in the back. Here, we'll be taking diagonal, brick-laid subsections, making sure we're maintaining a clean and efficient application.. The first diagonal subsection goes from the right side down to the opposite side of the nape. You'll, see in the first subsection a good average size to utilize for balayage applications --. This is going to create dimension and allow for mostly surface saturation.. The size of my subsection will directly relate with how much saturation the ends need.. If I need more saturation on the ends -- or if there are more solid end results I'll need smaller subsections. But if I want to achieve more dimension, the subsections can be larger. Simply Blonde. Clay. Lightener is unique from other competitors because it provides up to seven levels of lift in a single application. For balayage. This is a lot and that's so great for any client. Looking to achieve a clean and high lift., I also like to determine my mixing ratio by how much saturation my client needs. So if I need to do more full saturation, I might mix it 1:3 for ease of product movement, and if I want to do more surface saturation, I might mix it more 1:2.. We'Ll continue alternating with these diagonals all throughout the back. Creating a beautiful brick lay process., You can always add more product, but it's a little bit harder to take it away. So my best piece of advice is less product, less pressure and add more as you go.. One of the ways I like to ensure my blend is nice and seamless is to brush in the opposite direction of my subsection.. This ensures I have that little bit of texture to diffuse through my subsection and create that beautifully seamless, end result., Don't be afraid to use your glove and finger as a blending tool as well.. You can touch the subsection and still maintain surface saturation as long as you're being light to create a beautifully dimensional end result. I like to do a combination of full and surface saturation throughout the ends to make sure that my subsection is only surface saturation.. A great tip is to lift it up to ensure that there's no product underneath., One of my favorite blend insurance tricks is to dry brush, and this is especially helpful to ensure a perfect blend.. If there's an instance when I get product somewhere, where I don't want it or if I put too much on my subsection, I can simply take a dry brush and blend it. Through. We've already completed the entire back subsection of my client's hair, and you can see with this brick lay pattern. All the hair lays independently of one another, allowing it to process cleanly.. So now I'll move on to the sides, starting on this side., I'm going to take a diagonal, subsection and paint the hair away from the face. Again remember to hold your subsection using pretty high tension and use less product -- less pressure to apply in the front.. I really like to focus on the pattern of which I'm painting to create some variation in these back subsections.. My height will be more towards the back and, as I work to the front I'll do the opposite: to create some definition., It's good to do more, definitive lines in your painting and bring them a little higher up.. Now I'm on my last subsection in the front and again I want to make sure I'm taking out that vellus hair.. This hair is a little bit more susceptible to damage, because it's so fine, so you want to treat it and paint it at the very end of your application. Notice. How? Even as I work towards the front, I'm still holding my subsection at zero elevation., I'm also really focused on making sure that my application in my partings correlate with how the hair naturally lays to really create a blend.. I like to do a combination of upward, brushing and downward, brushing. I think, a nice combination of the two really helps to move the product and keep your lines really seamless. Again, I'm going to leave this vellus hair for the very end and move on to the opposite side. Another great piece of advice when you're doing a balayage application is not to get toe bent up on making everything perfectly symmetrical. Our clients' heads, especially on the sides. Typically, aren't exactly the same., We have different amounts of vellus hair, different densities and even if they wear their part on a side, that's definitely going to change the way. Their hair lays so make sure you're adjusting to that and customizing it rather than making everything perfectly symmetrical.. Now we're ready to move to the top of the hair, where I'm going to take diagonal subsections again and if your client parts their hair on the side. You'Ll want the diagonals to go toward the heavier side., A great tip, to adjust for timing as we move towards the top of my client's hair is to mix up a fresh batch of Clay Lightener and adjust your developer so as to make this top subsection process. In a quick fashion to catch up to the back. I'll use 30 volume instead of 20. As I move more towards the center of this top subsection. You'll notice, everything starts to get a little bit wider, so for control. I always like breaking these in half to just ensure that I'm maintaining as much tension and as much surface coverage as possible.. This is a great place on the application to use your dry brushing technique because we're so close to that front hairline. So I always love doing this in areas where I really need to create a perfect blend, and I want to be super cautious about adding too much product to avoid bleeding.. Now that we've completed the top we're ready to finish our application with our hairline detail. So again, this is just all that vellus hair, we isolated earlier.. I want to make sure I'm doing that at the very end so that it doesn't process as long because again this is a little bit more fragile.. I want to make sure I'm using a totally clean brush again loading just the littlest bit of product onto it and I'll start detailing it out and you'll again want to make sure you're using as little product as you can, with as little of pressure and make Sure you're pulling it away from the face.. I love spending a little bit of extra time on this portion of the hair because, when our clients pull their hair back, this is one of the first things that they see and if you bring your hairline detail a little bit higher, it's also going to create A little bit more brightness throughout the front of our client's application. We've completed our full balayage application.. You can see how clean and efficient this whole sectioning was, and I really loved the fact that we used a combination of surface and full saturation.. So next we'll get into toning and speak briefly to tone or selection if it's needed for your client., Because balayage is meant to look so natural, you don't always have to tone. However, based on the consultation you had with your client, sometimes you can use a toner, and one of my favorites to use is our Rapid Toner series. Today on my client, I'm going to use equal parts SV and VP Rapid Toner. Mix 1:2 with 9 volume.. What I love about our Rapid Toners? Is they process in five minutes or less so for a toning service, especially after a full head balayage? This is one of the perfect products to use to make toning, quick and easy.. Sv and VP are such a great combination to tackle warm gold tones, which makes it a great choice for a balayage as well.. I get so many questions from stylists regarding pricing for balayage, because this is such a popular technique.. I think it's definitely something to build into your everyday pricing menu --. I would highly suggest paralleling it to a full highlight and making sure that it coordinates with the rest of your salon. Pricing services.. Another good idea is to make sure that in the pricing of balayage you're compensating yourself for your time and your expertise.. This is a very artistic technique and, in addition, it's a lower maintenance technique. Because our clients won't be coming back to us as often for this service. I think it's a great idea to compensate for that in your price.. So here are the final and results of our balayage --, I'm so happy with how it turned out. You can see it's a super seamless blend, which is exactly what we were trying to achieve and through all the tips and tricks, we were able to really perfect. The process - and I hope you guys, found some little things that can really help you master your craft,

Brittan Jax: As a hairstylist I know how long and tedious this process can be! She did an absolutely beautiful job with the techniques and her explanations were flawless. She really hit all the points....even down to pricing! Wonderful job!

Megan Johns: You’ve got to be the only woman I’ve watched today that helped explain Balayage wonderfully! I had such a hard time in other videos trying to figure out where to start, how to start, tips or tricks, etc. You explained everything wonderfully, thank you for the info! I can’t wait to play with my hair! ❤️

Kayla Korpi: I’m not even kidding when I’m saying that this video changed my balayage game !! I tried it once after watching your video and my balayage has never looked as good , using this technique ! I tend to overthink things and the way you broke down the process really clicked with me !! I’ve done like 20 balayage since watching this video and I’ve loved the results ! Thank you so much ! Best balayage video ever ❤️❤️

Timothy Bloodworth: Thank you so much for sharing the head-sheets which demonstrated your sectioning that was extremely helpful. Maybe I'm still too new to the industry (only been licensed for three months) but when you said your lightening clay lifted up to 7 volumes I had so much anxiety just imagining that! Hopefully with time and practice I'll have more confidence with lightening in general, but I love balayage because of the freeform style of application and over all effortless appearance it gives.

VanDeLynn: Beautiful! I’ve seen a ton of tutorials but this by far is THE best! Thank you for sharing your knowledge and amazing work!

LaMonalisa: I'm not a professional but i do stuff to my hair all the time lol, i followed your tutorial on my niece's hair, shes 6 and her hair is down to her waist its a very dark brown. She has been begging me to make her hair look like mine lol. So i did this, and turned out beautiful! It looks subtle, but with so much dimension and looks so natural, didn't even have to tone it. Thank you!

Em: Excellent instructions! Very clear, well spoken, and the results were beautiful! thank you very much

Tiffany Jones: Loved this technique and so helpful! I have been trying to find a better way to do a balayage and I feel like this helped so much! Thank you!

Daffodilwanders: Great tutorial! Would you avoid doing any balayage on the very top layer of hair if the client demands it? she still has some damage on just the very top layer and insists on not touching it with lightener at all, although I think it would not really damage it much further ( she has a level 6 with a bit of 5 on top.) and wants to achieve an overall dark golden ashy blonde balayage. Many thanks for your advice on this!

Maryann Leonard: Thank you for being informative and not click baiting me! I use these videos to help me with learning more about different techniques and more often I find videos that don't teach anything! Thank you for giving such an in depth demo on the technique! Peace and love

QueenofKent: This was really informative and easy to understand and follow. Best tutorial on YouTube.

Becca Fisk: Hi! Thank you for the helpful tutorial! I was wondering if you could clarify a bit more on how to pick the correct direction for the diagonal sections at the top of the head. You say to make the diagonals to go towards the heavier side of the hair when parting the hair to the side. My hair part is towards the right of my head so my left side is heavier. Would I follow the direction of the sections you show in the diagram at 3:14, or would my diagonals be in the opposite direction? Thank you again for the tutorial!

Hair by Ashley Brooke: This was very helpful. The best balayage tutorial I've seen

briieme: This is literally the perfect bayalage technique. You've got a new subscriber! Thanks so much for sharing your expertise

user2796: Definitely the best hair tutorial out there. So helpful! Thank you

Melinda Furr: I love this! Leaving out those front hairs until last?! Why didn’t I think of that?! Thanks for the education Kenra!

Sandro Camilo: Congratulations to this masterpiece of balayage 101 I'm about to make it on my sisters hear. If I may...to colour the grey roots, should I do it first respecting the sections I'll use for the balayage or should I just colour the whole hair after ? Help✌

C_V_: Great instructional video! I LOVE the diagonal parting! That makes so much sense! Thanks again & GREAT job!

Toni Cocovixin Johnson: By far one of the best education videos. I've seen in a long time. I struggle with learning but I actually got it. Thank you so much, now I'm going to practice this on my mannequin. Definitely subscribing

Anamika Rai: Loved it ❤️ it's pretty easy to do as well

Sherina Hill: This is the best balayage video I have ever watched! Great teaching . I’m going to watch again. Thank you so much!

Cosmetolo-Joy Classroom: This was a fabulous tutorial! Great job on everything!

Greta Eve: Love this. really wish she would have went more in depth explaining in the consultation what we should recommend for people who want a high contrast look.

Lima Bean: This technique is great if you want a natural look. But if the client wants a lighter look like a shimmery silver white. Then I suggest doing it in foils and Teasing before applying to create a good flow. When bleach hits air it oxidizes itself and so therefore you don’t get the necessary lift . Placing bleach in foil Prevents the air to hit it and also traps in the moisture and allow the bleach to continue to lift.

Darlene Morton: Thank you for sharing your expertise. I used your technique and loved the results!

batch 97: love your technique! with natural and seamless results!

Layouni Amal: looks gorgeous , for the toning process ,could you please clarify what did you mean by mixing 1:2 ?is 1=SV and 2=VP

Refilwe Sedibe: Perfect! Please do a ombre look on dark brown hair next..

M K: Excellent tutorial, appreciate the thoroughness. That said, I still don't really get the whole bayalage trend. It has never really appealed to me, but maybe that's cause I have too much grey coming in, thus losing out on the "low maintenance" appeal.

loveheels510: This is the best instruction that I've seen! As a newby to hair dying, I needed the detail...thanks!

Jana: I do this at home today and it looks amazaing! Thanks

MegaTinni: Did this on myself and it was perfect. Better than my salon does here in Belgium.

Marigram: Wow.... So helpful. Was not expecting this quality hair education

Frank Scavo: great placement instruction and execution was on point!

Judson Beachler: Great instruction, beautiful seamless results! Though it appears the side section diagram is different than the tutorial? The sections are lined the opposite way?

WONDER MOON: This was sooo detailed! Love

Emiliya: Gorgeous balayage. Thanks for sharing. I'll try it on my clients

LYD VINCE CRUZ: Beautiful.❤❤❤Thanks a lot for all the information specially when it comes to pricing.

cristal flores: I love it, thanks for yours helps with all advices

Britanie Julien: Definitely the best tutorial on balayage I’ve seen on YouTube

Constanza Rosa Lobo: I've been dying to get this done but i'm so scared to ruin my hair cause i've dye my hair before and it ruined it. Took me 4 years to fully grow it out and now i have long healthy hair. Although i don't want the highlights to be blonde, i want them to be more like a light brown...

Alyssa Clayton: Hey I’m going to try this out myself but I had some questions. How long do you leave the product in the hair and do you first rinse out the bottom and then the top? Also what does toning do exactly?~

Stephanie B: Probably the best balayage tutorial I've seen, and I've been looking plenty!

Talavera Danilo: Wow thank you for this wonderful easy technique. To be honest I kinda messed up when I do it at first. Well at least I do it in mannequin, not in actual person.

goob: This video was very educational. You didn’t rush through like most videos! Impressed

Niranjani Singh rathore: It's gorgeous nd so helpful techniques really thank you so much...

Madaminski: Best tutorial I’ve seen! Thank you from mobile hairdressers everywhere :)

Marisa Brocco: Great video!!! Thank you for your tips!!!

Solimar Ortiz: If you could do a video of just you doing the parting for this technique that would be awesome. When I went to do it I messed up on the side sections.

Kathy Dryland: Thanks I channels have been trying to learn what this colour is and how it's done

Nasrin Davallou: Thank you soooo much for this great video,i am an older hair stylist and started to do this while ago, until now I’ve been putting the bleach layers in foil but i see that you don’t,doesn’t the underneath the top layer picked up bleach from previous bleach and also can i put her under dryer without foil?,thank you again❤️❤️❤️❤️

Annette Nehaka: Woow. Thank you so much for sharing such a talent with us. God bless

alexius marie: I would love to get this technique but I am confused when places charge for a balayage with a base or no base color. Would you be able to explain the difference as to whether it's needed or if one is better than the other.

Mat Gomà Quintillà: Incredibly well explained!

Desdoesgood: Really informative! Thank you.

Lori M.: Excellent and straight to the point! Can you just explain to the Pros., why you are one of the only ( not ) heavy backcombing?? I’m not a fan because the snarly mess it creates. def., a helpful tutorial, and I will continue to watch out for more Kenra in the future—as far as YouTube goes, this was very well done! I love watching true Pros. Who are on here to teach and really help our Industry Blessings to all the Hair Artists out there

emilia donnelly: This was awesome and the end result was fabulous!

Patricia Duran: Hermoso trabajo.... pero tengo una pregunta puedo usar esa técnica y cardar o no me daría un resultado óptimo ?

catalina barrera: As a cosmo student this is extremely helpful thank you so much

angel sines: Which parts did you saturate and which did you surface?

Mohsen Akbari: Wow thanks alot for teach us very nicely ❤️

Arti Mathur: Best tutorial I have seen ,thanks mam.

marbestyle: Love the colors but the tubes are difficult to get the color all out. The tubes are out rollable at the end.

STAR GALATTA: Lovely explanation, thank you

Hannah G. Bird: hi i’m the type to ask a ton of questions so i wanted to ask, if we were to make a mistake and have some spots higher up in the mids where we accidentally fully saturated, how would we fix this? I’m still in cos school and balayages have been super hard for me so far!! my first came out so so soooo patchy all over the place

Abdullah Ansari: As a consumer who's never had any hair service before, how do I know which salon I can choose for a good service like this?

Adrian Lopez: I'm in barber school and man sectioning long hair is difficult for me and to see a female do it with ease man that's impressive

Gena Smith: This sectioning technique is outstanding. I’m currently sitting with bleach on my head. Looking good so far. I’ll report back.

Joseph 221b: Great, professional presentation. I have only 2 critiques as a Cosmetology School instructor licensed for 27 years...Those wispy hairs in the front are not called vellus hairs. Vellus hair is usually microscopic and only slightly pigmented if at all. This is the kind of hair on a woman's checks. Also, proper translation of Balayage is 'Lazy Highlights'....lol

Silver Mont: Great results. I’m gonna try the rapid toners series

Sarah Bea: I‘m screaming at my phone right now. I asked for a balayage from brown to mid-grey (so there was no need to have super bleached hair) and brought an inspiration photo with me. However, I have zero experience with dyeing hair or different techniques and the consultation had me believe that my hairdresser knew what I wanted. I left with weird highlights in blue, purple and pink (“it will wash out”). Needless to say, I‘ll be back there in a few days and pray that they are able to fix it. The colours do wash out but it’s still a damn mess. Thank you for the video, it provided a few very interesting details for me to “make my case” when I go back to the salon.

Arielyn: Them for your help .i am doing balayage on my mum .this tips are perfect for beginners

Berakah .. Emprendedores por Perla Hidalgo: I’ve seen so Many balayage videos and this is the best one of all!!

Siya Mahajan: I saw about 50 video and suddenly I saw your video and after watching this video I felt like this is the answer to all my questions❤

Veronica Porter: Excellent Balayage lesson. Thank you.

Introvert Connection: OMG thank you thank you!!! This was the best tutorial ever!!!

Carol Martinez: Ahh thank you for this i love it soo helpful!!!

Amanda Jami: Two questions: How do you avoid spotting if the sections are not fully saturated? How do you prevent the bleach from drying (and dying) without using foils?
