If you've ever wanted to know how we do the gorgeous route smudge or a smudge and tone, I want to show you guys how to do that on my friend Beth. So don't forget to follow me on Instagram and let's get into it, don't forget. I'M a licensed professional working in a salon, so in this video you guys are going to see step two. I have already done another video showing you foil placement and basically how I'm going to create a lived-in blonde with Beth's hair. If you want to see that video be sure to hop over and check it out after watching this one, the link will be in the description box below. So, let's start this route smudge now this is going to obviously start with what formula we're going to be using. I like to customize each route smudge formula for my clients, hair, because I'm wanting to try to match up to their natural color as close as possible and I'm using redken shades eq cream. This is my absolute favorite for doing this. I am using three tones a7 and W 6 & 8 & 8 GI. These are very, very solid colors that I love to use when doing base colors, and I like to mix this with a 10 volume. So it's going to be deposit-only and now remember. We do not want to get hot roots, so we're doing deposit-only, and then I mix in a little bit of formula 18, because this is really great for helping to keep the strength of your hair as law as well as depositing color really. Well, it's just my little sidekick hair bestie. So once I have all of this mixed up is when we're going to head over to Beth's hair and we're going to start working on our next process. But we can't leave without my favorite from our brush and I found one so less go once we have all of the color lifted to the lightness that we want we're going to take down. All the foils give her hair a very nice, rinse and shampoo, because I like to take out all of the remaining product of the lightener. Before going on to do a root touch-up then I like to towel dry. The hair really really well with a gentle firm hand and then take her back over to my chair. If your hair tends to be a little bit more tangle, you can use a very lightweight too tangler, just to kind of be able to come through it and your wet brush, because it's going to do the very good job at detangling, while also being gentle on The hair, so you guys, can see check out these harsh lines, we're gon na go in and we are going to completely diminish that. So, basically, we are going to be working in the crown area forwards because her highlights start in that area. So I like to work from the bottom up now. I'Ve got my first little section here and I'm going to work horizontally from side to side, I'm starting in the middle on Beth and I'm taking this out about an inch and a half in the back working towards three quarters of an inch towards her hairline. So think of it getting smaller and smaller towards the front of her hairline, because we want it to be darker in the back and brighter in the hairline. So again, I'm working horizontally towards one side and then I'm going to do the opposite side, because this is going to create less of a line and giving us more softness when doing a root. Smudge, I always work horizontally. Then I like to grab my Olivia garden blend brush. This is amazing for blending out color like this. I cannot live without this brush. So again, I'm working up towards the face, I'm in about an inch size sections to a 3/4 inch section in the front - and this is what is really going to allow this color to sit on the hair and look at that. Oh, it's so beautiful! So after it has sit for about 10 to 15 minutes, then I'm going to go back and do my next thing, which is the toner for her toner. I am using Redken shades eq we're using onine p, with three capfuls of oh nine tea for a little bit more. I see of a finish and then I'm going to put in clear along with this and then our processing solution. After that, I'm going to add in a topper, okay guys. This is a magical thing that I do that is kind of a secret formula. So, on top of that, in the same exact bottle, I am taking 12 AV. This is Redken color fusion, okay, 12 AV. I'M adding 10 grams of 12 AV and 10 grams of 10 volume. This is creating kind of a hybrid demi-permanent color that is going to create an incredible tone so once the roots, Mudge has sat. Look at how beautiful this is. Looking look at that before in ass, I mean that right there is goals. This is giving you that lived in gorgeous blonde look. So once that has sat and processed, we are going to rinse all of the route smudge out and then we're going to move on to that toner. I'M leaving this away from her very front hairline, because I do not want that to get toned yet because that will tone very fast, so I'm putting on her midst ends first and really giving this a gorgeous tone. Once I see it kind of knock out, some of that yellow is when I will move to that front hairline and let this sit. This is more of a flash toner. Okay, you guys. So I let this sit for about ten minutes. Remember, flash toner, then you're going to do shampoo condition and then we're going to towel dry and style out the hair. This blonde is one of my favorite blondes ever and something that people really pick out when they're looking at my colors. So once I have her all styled out, you guys can see the difference in how gorgeous this smudge and tone is the smudging on the root still allows the highlights to be there. They just have a really soft organic feel to them with that gorgeous bright money. Piece in the front don't forget to check out my friend, Beth social media links down below huge shout out to my friend Randy for shooting these videos and don't forget to subscribe, like this video and I'll see you guys at another one bye,

Tiffany Bunch: I did this technique today and it came out beautifully! Thank you so much ❤️

Kate Wilkinson: Loved this video the shots, the info, the color was beautiful!! Picked up so many tips! Thank you love

Mel Gon: Does this vary a lot from just coloring the roots and then hilighting over that? I still keep my license but haven’t worked in a salon in quite some time. Usually we would color the roots and then hilight. But this is so pretty. Just trying to understand the difference. You have a gift! I never could quite grasp color formulations, you are an expert!

Natasha Doell: beautiful, great idea to use the 12 as well. Also love the bracelets, would love to know where they’re from

Megan Williams: I always wondered why no one was using the shades eq cream vs the liquid because it seems so much easier to not drip on the rest of the hair and this turned out sooooo beautiful !!!! Thank you so much for sharing !!! So is this your go to root smudge formula or do you have any other favs

Sun Soul: Wow, so pretty! Well done! Great teacher! ty!

Rose Pond: How doesn’t the dark root colour bleed into blonde during rinse?

olivia jordan: Very pretty. The 12 with 10 vol in with shades is different. I'll try it

Lynn Wendeln: Do you have any videos on doing lowlights on platinum blondes?

misty holomon: How much of the crystal clear did u use?

Lpg 8: This is basically highlights and toner on the roots. Of course, the formulation is what sounds complicated but after highlighting, any toner will blend everything together.

Blia Xiong: This is beautiful! What’s the difference between shades eq cream and gloss?

Haley L: This is beautiful!!! I have a question.. what exactly does the redken shades eq crystal clear do? I am a cosmetology student and I have heard 2 different things so now I’m confused! Lol

Nicole Turk: Love your work. Does redken shades eq cream cover grey? I love this formula but have lots of clients with grey roots

Kimberly Tafoya: Are you doing the root smudge on wet hair ?

Fish Red: Does this root color work on gray roots the same way , please

Pamela C: How do you keep the root smudge from dripping ok to the blonde as to not spot it

Sherri D: I need this get Highlights and my hair being so fine it shows the lines maybe this will work better !

AlanaReo: Great job!!!!! What kind of blow dryer is that?

Crystal Dao: Hi there ! I am a new subscriber. I want to start of with letting you know, I am not a hair stylist and I have 0 knowledge about hair ! But i love watching and love getting my hair done. I’ve ran to a few problems while getting my hair done. I’m Not sure if it’s me not conveying what I want, the photos I’m providing, or my stylist. But one of my first questions is why is the back on her hair left undone ? And the reason why I ask this is... because mine is left undone. I have dark hair and I want this exact look when looking at the top layer. And I did let my stylist know I only want my roots dark. But when I lift up half my head I see similar results as yours. I would just like a better understanding on while my whole head doesn’t look the same ? As a customer, of course I don’t have the same knowledge as you guys. But also that leaves ... ignorance on my end in thinking my stylist messed up my hair or not understanding what I had wanted. I’m sorry if that sounds rude. I just want to understand the reasoning behind this. I love how the top layer looks and I figure it’s supposed to be like that through my whole head. Thank you !!

Mia Ann: Any tips from going fork Dark hair to blonde ?

Yessica Castro: Gorgeoussssss!

marikie marie: Was that color applied on wet hair? Can I do that with demi permanents. I refuse putting developer on my hair.

Blah Blah: What is the formula for the toner? I have a client that this would look bomb on! You are great by the way!

Brittany Bohm: What blow dryer are you using?

Amanda Chaffin: Do you have a tutorial of your messy bun in this video? I love it! Are you still working with Mandi Sue?

Laura Holden: How do I not get hot roots if my natural is a level 3-4 and my lights are a level 9?? I always feel like I get hot roots when someone root smudges my hair! Won’t the 10 developer always lift?? How do you deposit root smudge color without lifting?

Honey Beary: And if a client has about 50% grey? (She's only 39yrs old)

Brittney Hagerman: Did you also do horizontal sections in the front of the hair ??

Elzbieta Tomiak: Hi, can you please tell me what’s the Formula 18 ?

Trey Cook: Brilliant. So am I right? Shades cream demi color Processing solution, Redken 12av perm color 10 vol Wouldn’t that slightly lift any virgin hair it might touch? Please reply. So curious. Xoxoxo love this

Leslie Bustos:

Lori Strode:

Nicole Turk: Will you base cover grey hair?

Alisha Nicole: Is that not vertical..going up and down?

Megan Michelle: What level is her natural hair color

Kim Lam:

santsin: very goood

Katherine C: A secret formula?? Why do you have to be so secretly?

Real Talk: Not a good video

Billy Shaw: You didnt tell as anything
