Correcting Hot Roots & Redken Shades Eq: Everything You Need To Know | Hair Color Series #10

color melting! today for #10 in the hair color series we are correcting HOT ROOTS & going over everything you need to know about Shades EQ Demi Permanent hair color by Redken. Hot roots are when your root area is much brighter/blonder than the rest of your hair. This happens because the scalp produces heat (quite a bit actually!) and makes the color or lightener process much faster than the rest of your hair. Usually this results in a bright yellow or orange (HOT!) root area. To avoid this from happening, you can apply the bleach or color to the root area last when applying color. Subscribe! I'm here for you every single week!

Welcome back to my bathroom today for episode 10 of the hair color series we're going to be correcting hot roots and going over everything you need to know about shades, eq, hair color by redken redken, thanks for being a part of whatever this is meetings in the Bathroom and if you're, not a part of whatever this is come on in subscribe. So last time we saw each other, we removed that shadow root, which was a level four very dark, and we did one side with lightener and one side with color remover. If you need a refresher, here's what it looked like, terrible as you can see hot roots and very, very yellow, but to note this is a completely normal look when you are removing darker colors. So don't be scared. If you do this at home - and you see oh wow - that golden cat pee tone - that's okay, so i ended up wearing it like that for a few days to give my hair a break and because i was being lazy, get our mirror out. When i get 100,000 subscribers, i'm gon na i'm gon na buy myself a mirror painted redneck gold. I'M going for that fancy this bathroom up, because now we're serious yeehaw. So what you're, seeing now on this root area is a nine in with ten volume and just a little drop of red. All i did was just apply it where that band of yellow was there was no technique. I just literally brushed it on this 9 N hair color did kind of mask my hot root, so i could buy myself some time. Wear it out in public. I mean i wore the yellow out in public, but this gives me less looks if we're being honest anytime, i correct hot roots on myself or a client. I really like to do it in two steps: there's a ton of different ways how to correct hot roots, but what you do need to know is. It is kind of tricky, because the root area is very, very blonde, usually yellow. Then you usually have a darker band of color and then in most cases, it's bright blonde or whatever bottom color, darker color. So most of the time you'll have three different projects going on at the same time. So this first step or 9n in my case acts as kind of like a base for what we're about to do. Next. If you look really close at this color, you can see that my hot roots are still visible. I don't know if the camera is going to pick it up, but from here to here we have hot roots. Here to here we have a different color and then here's my end color. So the colors we're going to be using today are redken shades. Eq glosses 6NA and 8NA 6 for level, 6 n for neutral or natural, a for ash. So what this is saying is it's a level six with a neutral base, with just a little bit of ash and same thing for the eight. This is level eight neutral or natural, with ash or blue. So a cooler hair color. They are a little bit hard to get if you don't have a license, but if you search the internet enough you'll be able to find a site that will sell them. Sally'S has a generic version of these called generic, it's in a white and black box. They work just as well. I'Ve used them before and the directions the mixing steps, the timing. Everything is pretty much the same, so we have a six and an eight and the reasoning for that is because i really wanted a seven, but they were out of seven. So we're gon na mix equal parts of a six and equal parts of an eight will give you seven we're gon na be using the kitchen scale today i'll link this one below it's a lot cheaper than buying a salon, scale. They'Re the same thing, this one's about ten dollars, so you put the bowl in zero it out. You wan na make sure you shake these really good, we're just going to be doing this little root area. So i'm thinking about a half ounce of each to make a total of one ounce of color. One ounce smells strong, so you can see it's just like water very, very thin. Now the shades eq has to be paired with their branded developer or the processing solution. You can use 10 volume developer, but it's not recommended and honestly it does work better. If you stick to this actual processing solution, you get more consistent results. Now, there's two different kinds of processing solution: there's a black bottle and i believe the other bottle is pink. They'Re both the same and that they have two percent hydrogen peroxide. The only difference is going to be the consistency. The other bottle - which i don't have right now but i'll show you a picture of this is the regular processing solution and it has a consistency of water. It'S really good to use in a bottle like this, for an all-over, color application or a toner. This one is the gloss to gel processing solution, which is what we're going to use today, has a more malleable, thicker, jelly, jello consistency which is really good for doing precision, hair coloring like this or putting it inside foil. So it's not going to slippery slope all over the place. More detailed work is what i mean to say one to one ratio. So i'm going to match it with this we're going to do one ounce, you can see it's not flying off the brush. This always goes on dry hair, i'm gon na section this off into quads very lightly, kissing my roots, we're not bringing it downtown. The end goal for me is to have a very light shadow root, but not as dark as i had previously previously had a lisp there. Previously, my natural hair color is kind of odd, it's kind of like a level 7, but ash i mean, maybe that's gray. I don't really know y'all, it's probably just gray, oh, which reminds me this shades eq does not cover gray. It will blend gray up to 50, really really good for men. We'Re gon na go through outline the quad and just tap the root tapping tapping tapping tapping. I'M not taking it vertically, like i did last time for my shadow root, i'm going to go back and do some comb work to kind of blend that so i'm not too worried about a harsh line right now now you can see that it's oxidizing shades eq Tends to look really really dark as soon as it hits your head, but don't be scared, because once you shampoo it it's going to be that color that it said it was this level seven in our case, but when it's on the head it looks dark outlining The quad tap tap, tap, tap, tap tap. Take this diagonal tap the top tap the bottom very thin subsection. So that way it can penetrate through the top and the bottom tap here: tap: tap tap; okay, diagonal subsection, really thin tap the top tap the bottom. The reason i'm doing this method is because i still have that hot root, so i need to apply the color to the root first versus going all the way in for the kill. I need to really focus on penetrating that root. To get rid of that. Little band of light - oh sh, shoot, got it on the floor. There hot roots are really challenging to get rid of, but they shouldn't be scary because they can be fixed as long as you're. Okay, with the process a lot of times, it's not going to be fixed in the same day, and mainly that's just because you need to give your hair a break. You don't need to try to do all that magic in one setting be okay with having orange hair for a while already got it on the bottom of my hair. Heck i'll just make a low light out of that taffy tappy tappy diagonal, and i would suggest to do this diagonal sectioning if you're going to kind of mimic this same. Look that i'm going for this very light shadow root. That way, you don't have a horizontal line of shadow built up on the side, if that makes any kind of sense. Also, when you wear your hair up in a ponytail and everything is done horizontally, you're going to see that line, especially if you make a mistake. So diagonal lines always kind of like in hair, cutting to blend and trick the eyes bye, bye, golden hair color. You were fun, i'm going to release it down and you can see here i'm going to leave these little air pockets. These little hoop doops oops to allow the air to come in and help oxidize or process it i'm going to go through and do these other remaining quads, starting with this quad next, typically in hair color, you always do either the front first or the back first. It would be unwise to do this quad than the back quad. I want these to kind of process at the same time and the back to process. At the same time. Now, if i were in a salon setting, i would always do the back. First, majority of the time that way in case it processes too fast, i can take them to the sink and shampoo out the back. It'S kind of hard to just out shampoo champagne, it's kind of hard to just shampoo out the front. You'D have to have them bend over and that's when you start getting redneck y'all. Okay, so just do the back. First, we're already making a mess for the back. I don't know if i'll be able to show you, because my i don't have enough room in the bathroom to do all that, but i'm just using the two mirror method: we're using this piece of junk mirror with this mirror. Well, we can see over the poster and just doing our best, okay and then i'll probably have my daughter go over it tonight, so she can get a little practice in. So that's how you do the back. You just do your best before i start going. I want you to see now how it started to oxidize turning really really dark, and it's not going to be that dark again, but you can see. I just did that little sliver. Now, if i left it like this, it would of course be a harsh line, but we're going to go through and blend it last so here we have it after i've applied it. The back kind of got a little silly on me to blend this together. I'M going to take a very fine-toothed rat tail comb and i'm going to start at the scalp and kind of push the color down like this and kind of comb it through. It looks a little scary, but as long as you didn't over saturate this with color, where it's too much color, it's going to be okay and it's not really going to touch the ends. Now i did make a couple mistakes right here, where i got color too far down, so i'm going to just kind of comb this through, so there's not a harsh line. What we're trying to avoid is that line of demarcation. We want this to blend and look like my roots, naturally melted into this color whoa hang on. I just saw that you can start anywhere. You can go horizontal or diagonal, i'm just going to go diagonally and i'm starting at the top. The very very top of my scalp or the root and i'm pushing out the hair color and combing it all the way through. So i'm grabbing that color from the top and whooping it down just gon na grab it through take big chunks. Take the bottom comb. It through you can already see the difference. How this one looks more melted versus this one having a stark line, and i also made a mistake on this side where i got the color down too far. So i'm just going to comb that through that is now going to be a low light. Oh wow, okay, i'm making all kinds of mistakes well there we have it okay, so again, taking the color combing it down melting that through now. If you have a build up of color on your comb, where you can see the actual color compacting on this comb, you need to rinse that out, because if you comb this to the ends, it's going to color the ends of your hair. It'S a demi permanent! So it's easy to get rid of, but if that's not the look you're going for just be mindful of that. If this process kind of makes you nervous just do this start at the top comb it through the middle and leave out the ends or put conditioner on the ends. So when you comb through it, it acts as a barrier and it's not going to color. It same thing in the back, taking it combing it through big sections, combing it through top and bottom. I thought i saw some dark in there yeah there. It is so i've got a little stripe. I'M gon na have to just make that a low light. If you do this with a much darker, color five, four three, two one to avoid this hairline - that this would give you this. You can take some of the processing solution on your finger and just kind of do little circles and just leave it like that. Don'T wipe it off that will blend that together same thing with permanent hair color, if you're using permanent hair color about midway through the processing time, take a little developer, you should be wearing a glove though, and doing little circles. That way, you can have a soft hairline and not that i just got my hair colored. Look. We don't want anyone to know. We'Ve been in the bathroom doing this ourselves, 20 minutes for this room temperature, so no heat put a cap over it. If you want this, is our dollar tree one i'm going to shampoo it out with all the plex number 4p one of my favorite blonding shampoos? Just so i can kind of refresh my blonde, because i don't have time to do a toner today. It is getting a little yellow on me on the ends, but this should help kind of cancel that out um and the conditioner. Probably honestly, i've got some pantene probe in there. I'M probably just gon na use that, because why not? Okay, so i'll be back in 20 minutes here we have it here we have it. This looks much better still have the blonde, but the root when we dissect. This is not so much of that reddish gold tone and it's a nice melted line and not a drop off. That'S pretty close to my natural color here in the middle. The top is a little bit darker, but it will fade. Does it look? Okay back there? I'M going to go in with this x-mondo bdsm whoa, bdsm slick and defined bomb. I never read the name. I'Ve been using it, especially on my braids, but it makes my hair look a little bit thicker, but there it gives it like a little bit of a texture, use your free combs, all right. There we have it. Let me know your thoughts. What you think in the comment box, i can't wait to see you next week next week as usual, i have no idea, but i do know that we're meeting together on sunday here in this bathroom 1 pm eastern time. So i will see you next time for something cool 10. Pro cent is donated to clean our conscience and it works out great

Shannon KraftyFun: Loving Your Hair!! I’ve got the “Hot Root” issue now. Been doing my own hair since the big C19 (2020) This video now let’s me know what I need to do to fix it. Once again, thank you for being so genuine and letting people know that it’s okay to make mistakes. I’m learning……

Queen of Tentacles: ETA: I just finished and it looks great!!!! I might do it again later this week with a darker color. I did it in 6n and might do 5n. I lightened my hair yesterday to pull out bad toner, and following along with this video now as we speak! You’re the best!!!

M. S.: Thank you Brittnee for this video, I made my first shadow roots a few weeks ago, then some highlights and surprisingly toner with 7vol. turned my roots from 7 to some golden 8/9 (!). I will defenately use your tips to do shadow roots again. ❤️

brandonbjackson: I’ve been loving the 4p! It’s definitely my favourite purple shampoo. Tbh though I normally use something like Evo Fabuloso, it just makes more sense to use a purple mask rather than a purple shampoo imo. I was looking for the new 10 min gel lacquers to use on my bf for a bit of grey coverage but they were out of stock of the shade I needed, so I thought I would just make something with some NB I have at home (which is the only series that Redken recommends for grey coverage) but then I saw the brews color camo so I thought omg perfect I’ll buy this instead! I have a theory that the new 10 min gel lacquers are just the brews color camo repackaged, I believe instructions are nearly exactly the same if I’m not wrong. A bit of a random rant here lol. Would love to see more videos relating to redken seq! Can’t get enough of them.

Jinxxie: oh wow you have a kid? you look so young! you have the best hair videos on YouTube tbh. there's so many pretentious professionals out there, but you always take the time to explain it, and explain what can go "wrong" and how to fix it. i love that you aren't afraid to show the mishaps and not edit them out. even professionals are capable of human error. shit happens. and showing how to work with that makes you an excellent teacher.

Mia Pia: You are a beautiful, talented, and helpful woman! Thank you for all your teachings here. I'm having fun doing my own cuts and color again. I took a 15 year break from all of this DIY hair stuff, but you inspired me!!! And you are still my overall favorite You Tuber!

starsunmoon: Loving the level 7 I have 6 on my roots but gonna fill in my back and sides with 7nb and 7a and just leave my front pcs light. My tonor is almost faded so time for a fall' color. : )

Maribel Torres: I love it! I did my own partial highlights and then used a toner but accidentally left the toner on too long and now my natural roots (brunette) are orange. It's the first time this happened to me. How can I correct this at home? TIA

Sarah Wood: Girl that looks good! I accidentally used my mid shaft-end color on my roots and I now have hot roots with dark level 4 hair! I gotta fix it

Mayor West: Love it!!! This is exactly where I am with my hair right now! Getting ready to take out my extensions and fix my roots and I want it to look"melted" in and not the lines! As always you look beautiful and did an amazing job!! Thank you so much, your channel has helped me so much and you're so awesome!!❤️❤️❤️

Donna Kaye: Thank you for this video, I’ve been looking for a informative video of doing roots. I have slices on the sides, and slice on the front on my hair line, not really close to the root. I wear my hair up, and right now I can’t, I absolutely hate it right now…. Thanks again! I’m a follower now!! ❤❤❤❤

Melissa Harrison: This was awesome today. Your hair looked fantastic both in the front and back. I absolutely love your hair color.

Chad Bugg: Love your videos! I recently watched a video by Aka Aislinn using Guy Tang Toner. She wanted to get the yellow tones out of her hair and go white blonde. This stuff was amazing . The products she used were Pearl, Titanium, clear, and 6VOL. It's the My Identity Line. If you ever want to go white I'd love to see if it works on your hair!-Tammy

starsunmoon: I'm throwing on a 7na over my 6n roots and level 9 highlights , have a few cat pee tones , so throwing on a 7na root smudge hoping this works !! Lol love all your videos !!!

JaVi: OMG, this video is perfect timing. i have been playing with my hair,. getting it from black to light red. Keeps washing out, now its dark roots and lots of different orange shades. I want to go back to EQ, just easy and the best. I was wondering about the roots. thank you!!!!

Amber Underwood : Love your content!! I was wondering if you could suggest an ALL OVER toner (or do i need a glaze? Looking for zero lift to get gold/brass out WITHOUT effecting lowlights. I bleached my hair a total of 8 times (over last few weeks) and it never breaks through certain tones. Natural level 5 that lifts crazy hot @ss orange. I used 20 vol with ion bright white (tube) For 35 mins each time. I DID attempt 30 vol strand test w dame bleach and my hair can't handle it. Even after 8 times bleaching over I still can't get tone correct . To much warmth- because I am highlighting through a cap on very long hair there is levels from 5 all the way to 10. Multidimensional. I did tone w T18 as well as T18 +050 (violet additive). A bit better but on certain areas it's just not attractive. I want to try shades EQ but intimated. Sorry for the book lol but thank you for the help ♡♡♡

Mommabee Bee: Very pretty I love watching you!!! Always make me laugh. Such a queen to wear pink when coloring. I swear I have a hair dying old tee-shirt, shorts, bra and underwear!!!! Lol. Keep up the great content. Hugs from Central California

C A: Love your vids. I did my roots w my own level 6n . I’d like to do very tiny baby lights w Schwartzkoff blonde me 9lift w the 20vol. I have bleach on few ends. And the permanent 6n on rest of hair. Want golden blonde . Have shades eq. Level 8s and 9 . Recommendations ? Root tap I want 6nb ( or w 6n) how do I handle the newly bleached areas and will shades eq affect the perm 6n

Megan6772: I bleached my dark brown hair to varying levels of 6/7/8. I'm trying to be a multi-tonal strawberry blonde. How do I remove the brassiness but keep enough warmth for the blonde?

Hannah Alhajri: Best instructional video I’ve seen so far, thank you! So funny too!

milomazli: This is awesome!! thank you for showing us!

Heather Howe: Love your videos for us mere mortals ' giving it a go'. Question- I find when I correct orange/ yellow with blue based colours it always ends up with a green hue . Presumably because of the yellow. I noticed in this video you said at the start about filling with red? Is that right.

Patti Zylstra: Love this color on you!! Thank you for your awesome videos!!

Meghan: Hi!! I dyed my hair magenta and have RED hot roots - any suggestions on color to use to fix?

Spookys World: Oh great content. I love that scale at 9.99 it's a steal. I ordered it. I need it for my blondme. Have a wonderful day.

Kate Eadie: Looks amazing! Love it!!

Robbie E: You do the absolute best videos! Thank you

Simple Nail Designs: Always enjoy watching your videos

Haley Sperbeck: I'll have to go back to see if you have done a video with the Generic sallys shades eq. The redken shades eq are my absolute favorites to use,but my God they have gotten so expensive Anyway I have heard the Sally's version runs extremely dark even the 9P opal is extremely dark. Anyway love your videos! I am licensed I just don't work in a salon anymore. And I love watching hair videos ❤

Jenn M: You make everything look so easy... Should I use T14 or T18 if I have orange/yellow tones after bleaching? I'm a level 10.

Sr ?!: Hi! I have brown hair, and I want to color it copper with color and developer, I understood that if I use the same level developer on all of my hair I might get hot roots with the orange color. Should I just use a 10% developer on my roots and a 20 on my ends? will it help?

ASMR B: Ive followed you on tiktok for a while!! I had no idea you do hair! This is awesome and this video is exactly what i needed!

Dolly Bow: I wish I came hear first I toned my blonde hair with what Sallys gave me and it went dark, they gave me a 3% toner 10/12 loreal, to be honest I’ve been in there three times and none of them except one knew what they were on about .

Jessica Constantine: Can you do a video on how to do the braids in your hair from this video? They are super cute.I wish I knew how to do boxer braids on myself. I can braid other people's hair but it's too tricky to braid my own.

Lisa Fraser: Awesome, thank you ❤️. I was using the liquid gloss not a huge fan. I'll try the cream because I do like the shades EQ dye

sari taylor: Ok some how you have luck on your side. I believe if I did that I would mess it up badly but you make it look so easy .

First Name Last Name: Not only informative but you are hilarious. Thanks for another stellar video. PS your guns are definitely goals!

Kristen Jones: hi I really enjoy your videos. I have a question for you? I hope you can respond but here it is. So I'm basically trying to do the same thing as your hair but I have grown out roots the mid-length and ends are pretty lights and my roots are dark so I was trying to create a shadow root. so when trying to bring the blonde up and make my roots dark do I do it like a blonde root touch up and then apply the color or is there a way to just bring the blonde up without going all the way to the scalp

Sharon Strickland: I love your videos thank you!

LoreRett: Hey darlin, love your videos and I do my own hair (in my bathroom) thanks to you and Sallie's. Could you do one on how you get your eyebrows soo nice and thin? Thank you for your videos and helping me save money and time.

Monyonia Scott: Ohhh my god thank u so damn much lol… I’ve have googled the hell out of “do I have to use redken brand with redken eq glosses” lol… I was about to lose my sh!t lol… bc i couldn’t get an answer!! But yah thanks for that and at the beginning too!! Love ur vids they are the best on YT. I get so much from them…every time I learn something new!! ❤

Janice Ward: Britnee My hair is dull very light blonde with some dark.but not much mainly at the back I want to.brighten it up I.bought 20% bleach/ and powder but im afraid I could get that yellow banding.Any advice? I know its hard as you cant see it.As always you look great..!

Kelli Nicole: Okay now you've got me wondering what the heck did the last hair stylist do to my hair? She used shades EQ after my many bleached foils and toned it wet in the shampoo bowl with shades EQ for like 15 minutes and washed me out, what did she do?

Liisa Bjork: Is it ok for me to call my stylist after a haircut I received to ask if she could add more layers and shorten it a bit. I gave her a $50 tip after she gave me full highlights and cut.

Vanessa Portillo: Looks good beautiful color

Tracy D: Sleekshop for Redken shades eq without a license amongst other pro hair products. I used them for over 5 years

Kristina G: Looks great just did this works great

Ashley Mc: How do you keep the ends of your hair so bright? Mine will look like that right after I do it but then it ends up an ugly gold dishwater color

Lu C.: Golden cat pee tones lol!

Tracy Cleary: Ummmm, there’s a reason only a licensed cosmetologist can/should use these. We really hate fixing everyone’s mistakes. N then u wonder why it costs so much. Knowledge is power ppl. Leave it to the experts. And, I’m talking experts WITH experience! Not just yr average outa school stylist. U want good, ya gotta pay.

Anthony A: Gay hairdresser in CA wish you were one of my instructors in school! You ROCK!

Astaria: You made my day doing this video

Aspa: Not a big difference between before and after

Kaytee Rullhusen: How is your hair so healthy???? Mine is a hot mess lol xx

Sugar, Spice & Everything Nice: Congrats on the 100k subscribers lol
