THE BLOG

I dyed my hair at home with Redken Shades EQ a few months ago and LOVED the results! So I thought I would try Sally's Generic Product version of Shades EQ to see if they are really the same. I have to be honest, there are some MAJOR differences, and I had to point them out.

Hi malpals and new Pals. Today'S video is me coloring, my hair again, but learning from my previous mistakes like measuring out the hair color properly. I had some comments about the Redken Shades EQ that I purchased from what I was informed to be a legit website. Being diverted product, so I thought I would go out to Sally's and purchase the generic. I love this Redken Shades. Eq my hair looks shiny. I achieved the exact color. I was looking for no damage whatsoever, so that was over a month ago, and it's time I can kind of you know, see some roots and honestly some Grays. So I figured it was time to do this again, but try out Sally's generic version of Redken Shades. Eq, they even have the ingredients here on the back, show you the differences. So, on one side, it's the generic value and you can go down the line and it looks pretty much the same, except some ingredients are higher up and lower, which means it's not the same formula. The generic has potassium sorbate and the Redken Shades EQ. Doesn'T the Sally's one has fragrance up higher, so it has more fragrance in it than the red can Shades EQ, so not too much difference now, I'm kind of nervous, but we're gon na do it and I'm gon na process for 20 minutes, like I did with The red con Shades EQ, I'm not going to change anything too crazy. I want to see you know the difference. I also have the Redken Shades EQ gloss to gel processing solution and here's the thing this is wonderful for precision and all that good stuff. Sally'S only offers the liquid processing solution, which is not the gloss to gel figuring. This might be a little runnier than what I am used to. I do have a pro discount at Sally's, so it was like a few dollars off. So, let's just say: 35 with taxes, the Redken products, along with the bowl and the brush. It was right at 100., so you're saving quite a bit of money. I don't know if it's the same. My hair is already falling out. So let's just do this. This is about a month of regrowth. It is pouring down rain. Pardon my bald spots from covid. I have a sectioning clip because I think I only need one since I have no hair. Today, though, we're going to use some different colors, I chose nine in and five in W. Now the Sally's line does not offer the entire line of the Redken Shades EQ. I went with similar colors as what I used previously, which I will have all of that information in the info box below so one part, and one part, I'm gon na measure this out correctly: oh wow, opening it it does have a strong fragrance, wow. Okay, the two with this and then I'm going to add my Warm Neutral Brown, which means that we need four ounces of the Redken Shades. Eq gloss processing solution, the generic version. This is four ounces. That'S another thing! This was more pricey, but you get almost 34 ounces of processing solution. Not everybody needs that. I don't even need it, but you can use your processing solution up to six months after it's been opened. So now, I'm just gon na add the entire bottle of this. So I'm just adding all of that to a little single mix her up. It definitely has all I feel like it smells a lot like a lot of the Sally's generic hair color products. So I have my hair parted in the middle because I usually part my hair in the middle. If you were doing like different colors and things like highlight low light, it's very important to do that. Go ahead and part your hair, how you wear it normally and then apply your color and highlights because then you're going to see your work but we're doing an all over color, I'm not going to do different anything at any level or stage of this. So This processing solution is a lot thinner than the processing gel, which it's kind of fine, but at the same time I'm kind of like um, I feel like I might have more control with the gloss to gel processors processing solution. Each section of my hair is a lot thinner than the last time. I can go ahead and eat and do less uh sections. So I guess that's a perk of extreme hair loss uh. I will say this: this is pretty fragranced. So if you're, somebody that is sensitive to fragrance like I feel like this fragrance in this - is uh kind of making me nauseous. So that's good! I'M glad I saved money now, here's the thing too! I am not using gloves because I am someone who's like if I use gloves I feel like. I can't feel where I'm applying things. So I don't mind my hands being a little stained and then you know washing it off later. One of the differences that I noticed in the instructions for the Sally's and versus the Redken is it says you can leave it on for up to 40 minutes and redkins. It says 20 minutes max so, like I said, I'm still just doing the 20 minutes, but I don't know maybe it's like less effective or something I just found that to be an interesting difference, so I'm just gon na go ahead and do the other side of My head and I'll be back once I'm fully saturated, because really I just want to see the difference between these two hair dyes and the interesting part will happen with the result. Okay, I have it applied all over and I have my timer on and I thought it would be fun for two seconds: okay, uh, not to bore you to death. I went on Sally's website just to see what people are saying. People are, there's, people who say perfect, dupe for red can Shades EQ better than expected, just as good as Shades EQ. It'S a very good, but the colors are darker than expected. Here we are shades, are nice and vibrant, but the color washes out faster than Shades EQ. So I got about six solid weeks out of the Shades EQ, so this will be interesting to see how long this lasts I chose 8 in which is one of the shades that I wanted to use, but they didn't have uh to tone my highlights and it Turned a red Brown like far 5 RB, which means I will not now have to pull the red out of my highlights. That'S good luck with that horrible colors! Well, if you have a 10 volume blonde, I wouldn't suggest using this. How the heck do you get any kind of bright at blonde out of these? Well, if you're a 9 or a 10 level blonde, and you use one of these, it's gon na be darker. Your hair is super porous and very bright, so any type of pigmentation that you're, depositing on your hair strands. It'S gon na soak in quickly pulled way too dark, y'all! Okay! Well, if you have a nine to ten, don't don't do this, thinking that it's just going to tone your hair, I highly suggest buying the Redken Shades EQ, see how this turns out. Okay, here we are with the end result and I have to say it's pretty freaking good again. The colors that I mixed everything will be in the info below are Warm Neutral Brown and light neutral blonde, and I'm really happy with the mix thing is. I went into Sally's, I wanted kind of the same color that I did before previously with Redken Shades EQ, but I wanted a little warmth. That'S why we went with the five in W and I'm happy with it. I do not feel like this hair color gets darker than expected. I think a lot of that was just like, I said: don't have an entire bleached head of hair and expect your hair not to get darker. When you put pigmentation on it anytime, you have bleached your hair in any area, not even your whole head and you put pigmentation on it. It will get darker than someone else who hasn't had that section or those pieces or those money pieces or the full head of hair bleached. I think that Sally's is just fine save the few dollars. If you want to the only difference that I noticed was the feeling on my scalp and the scent, my scalp was a little bit more tingly than the Shades EQ like more than I was comfortable with, and I ended up having to put on some of orbay's. Serene scalp soothing Levon before I dried my hair and styled it, and that like instantly cooled it down and made it feel better. The Redken Shades EQ gloss to gel processing solution did not make my scalp tingle whatsoever. The one reason that I would definitely not pick the generic over the Redken Shades EQ is for one. The scent was really overwhelming and it really did make me nauseous, I'm very sensitive to Smells, though it's a very strong hair, color smell, plus some some like strong, uh fragrance in there. It definitely smells like hair dye kind of on steroids. As far as the finish of my hair, the Redken Shades EQ, I felt like it was a little shinier. I don't know how long this will last versus the Redken Shades EQ. So I'll keep you guys updated in other videos to come so make sure to watch to you know, get updated on how long this lasts versus the Redken. So some people say it washed out quickly, but I honestly don't know what hair products they're using to wash their hair. I use high-end, shampoo and conditioner because bottom line it's better for your hair. Don'T get me started on that. You can look up. Videos of people like literally shaving, off hair product from drugstore hair products on people's hair. It'S disgusting! It causes a huge like coat on the hair. It'S just not good. Drugstore shampoos can tend to strip the hair of color way faster. That'S my gripe with that. I, like it, I'm happy with the results, it's what I expected it's what I had in mind when I chose these colors, I'm happy with it. I wouldn't again choose this over the Redken just based off of the scent, but let me know in the comments if you've tried the generic of the Shades EQ. I'Ve seen some comments that some of you tried that and you were happy with it. Let me know, don't forget all of the products that I talked about today. All of the other products that I use in the other video will all be in the info below with a better breakdown, so you can see it on paper.

My CustomPainted Life: My daughter has lightened level 10 hair and wants to add in lowlights for a more dirty blonde, level 6/7 N. I know it’really different to lift color, if later she wants to be super light blonde again. Should I use a Demi, or would that make little difference in lightening down the road?

Liz M: Miss girl your hair looks sooo good! I actually really like Sally’s GV brand! I use there GV Bumble & Bumble leave in serum. Love your video ❤❤

Lara Petty: You look beautiful!! I went to a high end salon after you did your hair the first time, trying to duplicate your color. They totally screwed up the color. I just don’t trust myself coloring my own hair. Now, two months later, I am trying a new salon next week with hopes of better results. Wish me luck!! Thank you for the inspiration!!

skylilly1: Pretty color! I think I'll steer clear of the generic. Strong smells are a no no. I let 2 toddlers brush my hair and give me hair-do's last weekend. I think I lost another 100 strands in 5 minutes. Oddly, my nails and eye lashes (yes, lashes) are growing fast but my hair is thinning...I don't get that. I've heard iron supplements can be good for hair growth.

ClaireBearCountDown: Yay I love diy hair colour videos! The colour looks so good sidenote: I have fine hair and really like the boo bamboo strengthening shampoo, which I think may be drugstore, but it's health food section drugstore type brand. Used to use the matching conditioner, but then a hairstylist used redken's extreme conditioner for color treated /dry / damaged hair and I've never looked back. Nothing makes my hair as soft and hydrated feeling as that redken stuff. Don't have to use as much leave in detangler anymore either

SephoraBelle: I'm probably going to get a lot of flack for saying this, but since coming to the States, I find going to the hair salon MAJORILY EXPENSIVE. I've had some shitty assed situations with one stylist who didn't listen to me and colored my hair dark brown, when my natural hair color is dark blonde. Yes, I hated it and the color had to be stripped out. It was almost an 8 hour process. I've had some crappy haircuts, I had one stylist cancel on me 5 mins before my appointment. None of these issues never happened to me in Ireland, nor did you pay an insane price. You knew the exact and total price when you sat down in Ireland and what to expect. I didn't go to cheap salons either, I reviewed them carefully and checked reviews. The hairstylist who dyed my hair color tried to pretend my hair color was fine. Sadly, I had to go to management and from my skin complexion even they could see dark brown was obviously not my hair color. No wonder so many women here in the States feel they have no choice but to color their own hair. I don't blame them. You hair looks gorgeous and the color suits you Mallory

Tammy Stiletto: OMG the color came out so good on you, it is so FALL I love the red coming through and the lip color you put with that was perfect

Emmanuelle Colombani: I have never dyed my hair but watched the video nevertheless Love this shade, it suits you really well ❤️ Enjoy your weekend

laura b: love this color! i’ve not tried any of these produvts, but i desperately need help! i’ve been growing out my natural hair for quite some time and it’s very dishwater blah brown with a lot of gray. i do not mind the gray at all, it’s the other color! i’d love to do something to make it look more shiny/less swampy looking but have zero clue where to begin. i dyed my hair myself for decades, every color even went platinum which is what stopped me dying my hair bc of the damage. I’ve never tried hi/low lights. no $ for a pro right now, but i’m growing so sick of my hair! ugh. ok rant over. i love watching your hair videos! you seem to always make great choices and pick lovely colors for your skin tone!

Maddie: If you ever need to thicken your liquid processing solution add a flick of water after mixing and whisk really quickly! Works like a charm

Heather Cordova: Wow this color looks great on you!!! I’m loving your warm tones and your makeup look. FYI your skin before makeup looked amazing!! Do you know anyone with a cosmo license? You can get your redken from SalonCentric like 7 bucks a bottle !

mollzz: Turned out beauuuuutiful ❤❤❤ looks perfect for fall!!!

Mary Lamb: Love this color , it looks beautiful on you Mallory ! Have a great weekend ! XOXO Mary

Kaylee Chavez: Looks great I'm thinking about trying it out, how did it last?

cutepoiisonn: Be careful mixing in metal. it could cause a chemical reaction. plastic, ceramic would be best

Laurie Bieda: Hi Mallory,I love the turn out of color, was surprised you called that mushroom blonde,I saw more of a fall autumn color, yes,or no,still love it

Cindy Sharp: Pro tip! Never mix hair color in a metal bowl. It changes the color and makes it oxidize.

Lisa Ostrowski: That color looks great on you Mal, good job!

Caroline Lennon: Ooh this color is gorgeous! Love the warmth!

Amelia Loves Glitter: Yay Mal! I don’t know how I missed this! I love it! ❤

Emilia: Iove this colour on you! It suits you so much

Brandy Randell: Love this video. But where do you purchase shades eq?

Ashley Willhite: It's so great !!

Shelia Smith: It looks beautiful

Ncush: what is a processing solution? is it the same as developer?

Cee Cee: Always beautiful, Mallory ❤️ Booo to stinky fragrance

Гелла Костина: Perfect video!!!

Happiness is what you make it: Did you do the 2 different Colors 50/50

Claudia Bowen: Girl did u do a video on the redken?? Love the color

Anna L: Gorgeous color!!

Alicia c: Can we talk about your eyelashes? What mascara are you wearing, your lashes look great!

Ashley Brannon: Love the new hair color

Carol Clarke: Looks great sweetie Xxx

LisaD GingerSnaps: I love that color on you.

Daria Isaksen: Beautiful ❤

Nicole Soldier: Warm hair looks good On you, very fall

Racheal Church: I lost a lot of hair from dry shampoo....

Rootatoot07: Love it Mallory!!

Kerri Sinibaldi: The directions on the EQ state hair should be dry is this product the same?

kristen gann: Love the color do beautiful

Kae Kay: Would it not be better to dye with permanent colour? I don't think the semi permanent colours cover grey (well at least the ones we have here in Australia don't). I'm always looking to cover grey without the harsh chemicals but I don't think there is any other way. Would love some advice

Just because: If you have level 9/10 hair use a toner not a Demi permanent.

Abbas Hussain:

Kathie McAdams: I'm a hairstylist that is familiar with redkenshades EQ why are you going from a five and a 9 that's ridiculous you only go a shade or two off the nine is only bringing that five up to maybe a five and a half doesn't make sense a 9N is just a natural 5nw is dark. Learn your color chart

LuLuTheChiweenie And Mom:

LicensedMasterCosmetologistandAesthetician: So where is the color bowl you said you bought? So the total probably wasn’t $100 at the hair supply for licensed pro’s only then…?
