How Not To Dye Your Hair (Hot Roots)

★ LIKE ★ COMMENT ★ SUBSCRIBE ★

First of all, I am NOT a professional hair stylist. This video is just a lessons learned on the mistakes I made while dyeing my hair at home. If you want professional advice, please ask your hair stylist.

In this video I talk about "hot roots" and how I got them, hair coloring that I used, and why I think it turned out the way that it did. All of this is of my opinion and my limited knowledge on hair dyeing.

I recently dyed my hair burgundy, it fixed my roots and my ombre and now my hair is a much darker shade. I am extremely happy with the results and I did film it. I will post it much later as I have tons of other videos that need to go up, but I did manage to get it to a better condition.

Hi beauty and today is going to be a little bit different than a tutorial and a little bit different than a review today is actually going to be my hair dyeing lessons learned and the reason why I'm doing this video is because one a lot of people Notice, my hair is got minor, but what most people haven't noticed is that my hair is a mess. Do you guys notice how the roots of my hair is lighter than the rest of my hair? And, oh, you want to see something amazing, but I have like blonde patches hidden underneath this is called hair dyeing at home fail, and I wanted to do a video about it, because I wanted to talk about how I got to this place and what you guys Should avoid so, first of all, when I originally filmed, I actually filmed a tutorial of how a box that is hair dye right here. This is the UL 61 high-lift ash brown, cooler, l'oreal, paris superior prophet Sunkist, caramels, hair dye. I actually went through three different boxes of hair dye. I don't have the other two boxes after I had um braid, my hair, which, if you guys haven't seen that video link it up here, I decided I didn't like the coppery miss of the actual um ring. So I bought an ash blonde hair dye and I toned the hombre. I took some pictures. They put it up on Instagram, it looked so much better, but I really didn't like the contrast of black to blonde, because my hair was essentially black and my end was essentially blonde. It was such a huge contrast. I wasn't so happy with it, so I decided. I was going to dye my hair, which comes in this guy, and I filmed it in everything and I will tell you that it turned out darker than I wanted it worked. It worked. Everything was fine. My hombre didn't completely take the color as well, because it was originally bleached, but it did darken my own braids and it lightened to my upper part. I was kind of starting to balance it out and I was pretty happy with it, but it wasn't a change enough that anybody noticed. So I was like I'm gon na dye. It again and I ended up buying another box dye, which I don't have it anymore. I ended up throwing it away, which gave me this color and I will insert a picture somewhere in here some picture that I'll find F of Google or off of the L'Oreal website. So you guys can see what color exactly that I used to get this color. So essentially, it took one toning of my own brain and two box dyes to get it to this shape. The first box that I use, I follow the directions exactly to a tee, and I made sure I had everything in place. I made sure I had a comb makeup, wipes, hair clips and all of the products you needed here. I even need a trash bag t-shirt so that I wouldn't ruin my clothes and essentially I followed the instructions I use the gloves. It does come with a color, a developer and a conditioner. You mix the color and the developer together and then you put it in your hair. I did use my own hair dyeing brush that I did get from Sally beauty and I brushed it actually along the darker parts of my hair. So I took essentially from my roots down to my hombre and I dyed that portion first, so that the darkest parts would get the most color once that was good, then I went ahead and put the color into my hombre and then into my roots and once Everything was fully saturated. I put my hair into a shower cap, and that was absolutely wonderful and great, and I got great success out of this and the reason why I used the ash Brown versus any other brown was because I didn't want it to turn orange. I wanted to stay very neutral and very ashy and it worked amazing, but it didn't lighten it very much and I did keep it in for 40 minutes and it only changed. Maybe one shade and I wanted something a little bit more drastic. So then, I bought the second box type. The second box diet got so confident about the first box that I rushed the second one. First of all, I was a mess I didn't do the splitting of the darkest part and then the hombre and then the roots. This time, I just put it all over mistake: number one: don't do that always put in the darkest part, first roots, the roots last and then the second thing I didn't do was I didn't wrap my hair the first time I wrapped it in a shower cap. The second time I completely forgot and the problem with that and reason why you want to wrap your hair is because the heat from your head actually activates the product, so the product close to your head will activate faster, ending up with hot roots, so anything closer To your scalp will end up lighter than the rest of your hair unless you completely wrap your head and allow all of your hair to heat evenly you're gon na end up with hot roots, which is essentially what happened to me, and so now, as you guys, Can see, I have hot roots, it's a really simple fix. I can just get a demi-permanent dye and a low developer like a 10 developer from Sally Beauty, and I can just essentially dye these areas that are light and then comb through to blend it into the darker part. But at this point I may just completely change my hair dye. I'M thinking dark burgundy. I know it's summertime and typically people want to go lighter, but I'm thinking about just completely changing my color I haven't decided yet, but ultimately I just wanted to share with you guys. What not to do - and you know the biggest thing is be patient - read the instructions and just follow the rules and try not to rush through it, because you could end up with her patches just like so anyway. I hope you guys enjoyed this video. When I do decide to read I my hair, I will be more patient. I will do everything that do and I will make sure to film it, for you guys see you guys can see the right way to dye your hair at home. This was essentially it's not the fault of the box side, the boxed. I did exactly what it was supposed to do. It was the fault of my own by being impatient and not taking the time to do the right things so anyway. I hope you guys enjoyed this video make sure to like, if you guys enjoyed listening about my fails and how not to dye your hair and make sure to comment down below, if you guys have any tips tricks for myself or for anybody else, who's watching this Video and, of course, make sure to subscribe. The guys want to see more videos. Thank you guys so much for watching this is Erica from rings bTW. I ready. Ladies and gentlemen, you look in my way. I see staring something about you and Jeff can't explain the way you work taxi, my name got ta, be the only one makes me feel.

Ger Marasigan: The exact same thing happened to me, and it looks like we have the same base hair color. I went to the salon, & they offered me a ridiculous price to fix it. Fortunately, my angel from that salon pulled me aside and gave me instructions on how to do it at home using the same color box i used. I tried it when i got home yesterday, and OMG it worked!! I love my hair now! This will only work if your box color has 9% developer (30 volume). So here it is: 1. Get the exact same box you used when you got hot roots. Get the right amount of boxes. If you have long hair, probably 3 boxes. 2. Apply only on the darker areas of your hair (where the color didn't lighten your hair as much). Wrap it in cling wrap, and let it sit for about 25-30 mins, watching it as you go. 3. Remove the wrap then use a fine toothed comb to comb through your hair, including the roots, to blend your hair color well. 4. Apply product on your roots (yes the hot roots) and leave on for 5-10 mins only, unwrapped. 5. Rinse.

aniqaabd: thank you for doing this, its awesome when people tell you exactly how they messed up it helps you understand the right way a lot better

Nia: That's funny because I wrapped my hair, & I still had hot roots! But I let it process under the drier too. I thought the heat would help lift my ends since the heat from my scalp lifted my roots. But girl, was I wrong! I look like a 'sandy' red-head *face palm*

Shahar A: Oh my gosh thank you so much! Hot roots is my diagnosis! I had no idea why my roots were hot red and the rest of my hair was much darker! Next time I'll make sure to wrap it up lol

Loretta Taylor: This happens to me. I use hair colour from Sally Beauty and mix with a developer. In order to get the colour to not lift and deposit more colour I use less developer than called for. For example, if the ratio is 1 part colour to 1 part developer I use 2 parts colour to 1 part developer. This seems to work well for me. Took me a lot of trial and error to figure this out though!!

Meowlody: I had a hair disaster and ended up with hot roots too,was going from black to red,so im just going to put a darker red over top, honestly though your real dark hair looks great on you and your hair is so pretty!

Helena Richard 💖: You don't have to wrap it. It will still be hotter then near your roots. It is way easier to just apply dye 4 cm away from roots and only apply it to roots in the final 10 minutes. Good idea to comb it in slightly to blend it! I will remember that.

LetitiaLaura: I did the exact same thing years ago , but worse. My hair was orange, so I bought two boxes of blonde dye to fix it. My hair turned blonde, but was like a rubber band. I had to cut my hair all off and dye it black. I had such a short pixie cut and thought it would never grow back. I cried for a whole month. Your hair still looks beautiful and healthy, so it will be ok. I'm thinking of going dark again because its way too much upkeep and money keeping it light. My roots grow out super fast and they are very dark.

D A: My hair looks like yours now but I did do the dark first, then the roots. I was thinking of getting a semi-permanent dye to make it even. Thanks for your advice.

Ernie Waters: the same thing happened to me with the same hair dye! So i currently have a LOT of hair dye on my hair right now like my hair is sleeked lol. My hair is VERY short so i thought it was very strange for that to happen to me but it did. I have no idea if my method I did is going to work but oh well i hope it does

CarlyLynne92: Thanks for this. Cuz my ends are super dark compared to the rest of my hair and everyone starts at the roots in all of their how-to videos. I would have had such bad hot-roots.

Christina Z: Thank you for sharing this video and your fails so that we may learn from them!

J- Scribble: A professional salon fucked up my dark hair and gave me “hot roots”. This makes my look washed out! I’m going to fix this with a darker dye. Never going to this “professional” again!

dw_93: Hey I'm new to your channel and am loving your vids! I used the Wild ombre kit as well but am unhappy with the brassiness. I was wondering when you mentioned using the ash blonde , did you re dye the whole ombrered part with the little special brush? Or did you only use the toner, and not do the bleach and developer? Thanks :)

Kalei Lagunero: Ahh!! I used to bleach my hair and color my hair so much. But then it was just damaged and fried. So I haven't bleached it in years and the last time I added highlights was like, 2 years ago. I'm just going to stick with my black hair unless I go to a salon. And they'll charge me $600 lol!!

Kariari246: I think it must be fate, me finding this video, because I literally bought that same box of hair dye, dyed my hair at home today, and the EXACT same thing happened to my roots!! This is crazy!! I can't stop laughing :D Hang in there girl, we'll get through this lol. What I did was I bought an emergency "Clairol Shimmer Lights shampoo and conditioner", which tones down the orange and yellows, we'll see what happens :)

Maria Rodriguez: I just recently did the same thing & got the same results my roots where much lighter than the rest of my hair

Kristuhhh: When i dyed my hair for the first time in awhile which was 2 days ago. i dyed my hair. my roots are twice as light as orginal hair color i had .My hair tends to dye faster & lighter than my colored (rookie mistake) but tomorrow im going to grab the same hair dye i use and trying to ombre it to look somewhat decent. haha I feel the pain in dying hair at home. The struggle is real.

Helena Ulloa: Thank you só much for this video. I rushed through my dye job and did all the things you say not to do... and hot roots. Now I know. Idk how to fix it, would it just be best to dye it all a dark color? Or will the hot roots continue to be lighter?

queendeez92: Hi! So the picture you showed at 1:35 is the shade of ombre I want to achieve this summer. However, is there anyway I can get the exact ombre that was shown in the picture without dyeing it more than once? My current hair colour is brownish red at the moment but my natural colour I would say is black. P.S. great video :)

mick23aela: If you have lighter spots in your hair and you're going dark should you go over the lighter parts first or still the darker parts first?

Miko Lee: Loved your video, I have a similar problem, my roots are a tad lighter than the rest of my hair, so I decided to redo the color again, does this mean I should do my roots last? Thanks.

Zicri Bogart: How long do I need to wait to redye after dying with a ammonia free permanent dye from Olia? I had a similar situation (virgin hair) roots look lighter. :/

Tami Beaulieu: Erica, This was so great.  I have never dyed my hair and I have --- I thought --- everything ready.  But, after watching this, not so sure.  I did not know the roots had to be done last because all the YOUTUBE video's I've seen on dyeing has them do them first or maybe that is for darker colored hair you do them last.  I guess what I'm saying is thank you and I need to research "HOW TO" more.

Angelo gregort: This is such a good video. Hot roots are an important thing to avoid.

_ Maddy _: The same thing happened with me I have blackish brown hair and I wanted to listen it up to brown but I had to strip it so I had to take out the dye I had in before, then I dyed it blond hoping it will lighten up my hair so I can dye it brown but it only did my routes and I have blond patches in my hair while the rest of my hair has gone the color I wanted like on this brown hair dye box I got I was gonna dye my hair with.should I dye my routes with the brown? Becuase it looks familiar to my hair but it's just im just getting worried if it will got black and it won't look good..... someome plz reply

Lily Nguyen: Yes, I went to Gene Juarez. They did a lousy job and made it a dark brown. Went back to the asian salon and boom it was back to light brown again. It would take ot another visit to get it lighter as it was colored dark and could not get it more light. Never bleached. 20 developer so speaking from experience my colored hair lifts so it does on my hair.

SoNiA .AlVaRaDo: Hey, I have a question. How long did you wait to dye your hair dark burgundy to fix the color of your hair? Same thing happened to me except I went to ulta salon to get my hair dyed and it came out exactly like yours but my roots were more lighter than yours. Such a mess. So I want to see how I can fix it myself. But im so scared to do it cuz what if I make it worse. Please help me! Or what salon do you suggest I should go to so they can fix it cuz I dont want to go back to ulta. Thank you!

PetitChocolat89: Omg, I've done that before! So glad you made a video about this - I wouldn't want to repeat it!

Heather Wacker: I am pretty sure you do not want to go burgundy if your not a professional it's a lot of steps and tons of maintenance! I love the color myself but make sure if you do dye that you tone as well and get a bottle of conditioner with a semipermanent burgundy as well to keep your color otherwise it fades very very quick!

Lauren Kelly: Ok- question!  I recently (over a month) got my hair done at the salon.  My hair is naturally dark brown, but we added highlights (caramel) and she made my overall hair a lighter shade. Now my roots r growing back in dark brown so I was thinking of box dying it.   Can I get hot roots if I go with a "Medium Brown" or "Dark Brown" box dye??

Apen Amer: I used to apply on the roots first that's why my hair color always turn lighter on the roots ...lesson learned from this video

Lil Anaya & Mommy: I did the exact same written on the loreal product. Headed with a shower cap. But ended with extreme hot roots. What's to do?

fladesignergirl: Try Wella Color Charm toners with a 10 developer. Wella lasts longer and is only about $5.00. Know the level of your natural hair before you color your hair. The lower the number, the darker the color. You are probably around a 5 or lower. I'm not a hairdresser, but I have close friends who have taught me about levels.

grammyh2005: Its from using permanent dye. To avoid this "brassyness" you gotta use temporary dye which is hard to find. The only place I could find it was at Sallys.

Andrei Shayne Dayto: It happened to me today, I have dark hair and colored it to Mahogany, and I got this Orangey yellow roots, I tried to tone it by dying my hair with blue dye but it didn't help either.. Can a Black hair dye help? I really need some advice

_ Maddy _: I am 13 and the thing about my hair is that I'm growing grey hair at my age hair dressers don't know what it is I even went to the doctors about it but they were as confused as I am , I have to dye it constantly cus it's always growing back I think it might just actually be a family thing but my hair is so dark from dying it I just keep ruining it by dying it constantly...

Meesan Unab: I think I face this issue with loreal hair dye only. Bcos the developer is usually higher and its for a lighter color. If u all notice if u buy loreal it doesn't indicate the developer number. And for example if we dye our hair darker last time and try to lift the color with a lighter color. It won't work and only color your roots. So trick is if wan to color lighter, use a bleach followed by the color.

Pastel Shades: hi. does anyone know if I let hi lift dye sit until the color develops will it not lighten, just color? My roots are way lighter and I want to try to even out my hair. the color I love and used to use before I made a mistake is a hi lift shade

Star5: Will definitely try the cap.  I do hate my roots.

florenna: I think your ombre looked good actually, though it was more like contrast of black to brown than black to blonde ;)

Antonio Juarez: Is it bad if I dyed my hair for the first time and it didn't take. Tried it the next day and still didn't take. How long should I be waiting to dye hair again?

Matt Garcia: I had the same problem and followed the directions clearly and my entire head was virgin to begin with! :(

Worship drumming And Me: hi i have hot roots now after coloring my hair with ash blonde from loreal box type dye.. but its not that bad. im planning to color it again with same dye but planning to avoid the roots and just go with the darker lower part of the hair.. u think it would work?

Marleen G.: Hairdye over hairdye is never going to make your hair lighter. You actually need to bleach out the previous color first in that case. You can only go darker now, which may be the answer... to dye it back to your natural color.

Emily Quito: This happened to me, i gotta go dark maybe... Oh wow i got my self in another hot mess! But its good to see im not the only one

LL Tee: I've been there, lesson learned! Thankfully I found a hairdresser I trust last year and will only go to him from now on. What about the salon you went to for your cut?

Lithzy Mendoza: The exact same thing just happened to me, looks just like urs and when you were talking about all the things not to do I realize I did them alll :(

B. Maynard: Very helpful, thanks so much for sharing!

Kim Osorio: I dyed my hair again after getting hot roots and it finally looked fine, but then a week later, my hair currently has hot roots again... I'm so pissed. I have to dye it black now and I was trying to go for an ash brown color. I want to cry lol.

Miracle 23: I have a problem coloring my hair. My hair was pre colored. Faded to a dark brown. But the red color I put in my hair just made my hair a very dark red. It almost looks black ... how can I get a bright red look ?

MARCHIASMIND: Thank you. I was wondering why my roots did this. Thanks

LIOR: Exactly what they did to me at the hair salon

Kathy Lewis: How do get the back ? If you do it with the brush on the patches will it blend?

Kmeower: You do know you can't actually go lighter with box dye? The developer isn't strong enough to lift hair. It's meant to really only darken hair. Picking up a box of blonde dye that doesn't say "high lights" or "lightener" will most likely do nothing to your darker hair.

Savannah McCormick: I have naturally dark hair and right now I have ash dark blonde. I got light ash brown. This is way Im goin to do it this way thank you

Aly Bae: I have a question. So, I recently dyed my hair. And I did do the roots last. But it still came out the lightest. Am I doing something wrong?

ann melendez: I always get hot even when it's done by a professional it's just a curse

Angel Kelso: when you mix the developer and the color i wait until it turns to the color i want then i put it in my hair

Ziggy Jus Zigs: Hi I just colored my hair the magenta color from loreal hi lites and my roots are omg sooooooooooooooooooooooooooo bright but my ends are perfect any advice on how I would go about getting my roots the same color

Asiancinderella: It happened to me, but after a few hair dye, it lighten my hair .

florenna: And btw, the hot roots usually only applies to bleach or ultra-lightening dyes (which I guess this one was?), not other kind of hair dyes.

Samantha Beenken: Can i just re dye the dark parts the same color? I just dyed my hair a light brown but it only shows at the roots but i didnt have dye in my hair before i dyed it light brown...my hair is black naturally i need help anyone have any ideas?

fgtvre: Kinda off subject a bit! When getting hair done professionally around my area they never dye to the root completely! Anyone know why?

ayeni sia: I prefer the 1 color that you had b4 ombrey this one is beautiful too its not that bad

Elaina Daves: her saying "umbre" and not "ombre" was KILLING me!

Jackie Garcia: My hair is medium brown not that light or dark so.... I dyed my hair lighter like a light brown but it only got my roots like the rest is still my natural hair color but a bit lighter but my roots completely changed like a really light shiny Brown idk if i should try it again only darker or let it grow out

Dr. Tracy Timberlake: i am so scared to die my hair lol. first of all i know to get it lighter im gonna have to bleach it and that frightens me hahaha

Sonia Chaudhry: Hey.. i have dark roots like a level 3/4 but i has gotten ash blonde partial highlights back in may. Its grown out about four inches and is slightly brassy. I dont want to go into salon so if i use a box dye from wella kolston no 6.1 all over will hot roots happen to me? I want to go a medium brown all over now and get rid of the highlights. Plz help!

Teri Burbrink: My hair did that too and I used the same stuff! And WOW it smells so bad!!

Jenny: this is so helpful thank you so much

sweetangelnpali: Yes !! That’s how my hair is

Jennifer Gonzales: I wish I would have found this video before I did the same thing. What did you end up putting on your hot roots,?

Jeannie Robletto: Hot roots! Woot woot! I just did the same thing.. ugh..

Neet blob: I have the exact same thing but my roots is wayyyy lighter and the bottom brown and the front black

Vanessa plays games shenigans: Thank you I just used that sun kissed caramels in brown....and yep I got hot roots....I hv to go to wrk tommmorow...I'm wanting to go get darker hair dye tonite but I'm scared my hair will melt off

Karla: I’m dying my hair dark brown and I’m currently a light brown can I start at the roots since I’m going darker or will I get hot roots??

sugar swirl: I just dyed my hair and failed it's splotchy so I'm going to try to fix it on the weekend

HermosaVida: Can I dye my hair twice in one month ?

Whitney Michelle: Idk bout everyone else but... I kind of like your hot roots. Lol. I thought it looked really nice. But, I’ve been told I’m ridiculous before for things like that so.... ‍♀️ it be like that sometimes.

lexi landis: I currently have platinum roots and red hair and i want to redye it red how do i do that without getting hot roots do i dye my roots a dark color?

Clapback Patrol: I feel so bad for you this has totallllly been me before

Michelle Medr: Sooo that just happen to me lol can I dye all of my hair black like a soft black or will the black eventually fade and show the red? the rest of my hair is dark brown slightly reddish tint

itselainefipo: Is it okay if i use the same hair dye color to even out the ends ? Because right now my hair is black and i dye it with like white frost color and i mix it with medium brown color and my gawd my hair is a mess right now its exactly what happen to your hair. If i did that then it will be okay ?

Rachel M: I shoulda watched your video before I didn't it again! Ugh now to deal with the hot roots.

NCR Lives Forever: The last time, I used Just For Men it is for the second time, and it didn't work so i put coke in my, and the grey bits went blonde.

Christelle N: Your hot roots are beautiful. :) it's a reverse ombre

Emily Grimm: Color will only lift the virgin hair you have. That's what it did. And it just toned the ombre and did nothing to the middle colored part

MAMAKIJAANGUGU: Thanks for sharing. I really enjoyed the video.

Gabby G: What do I get for hot roots from Sally’s I want dark brown hair

amilox0: Actually watching this while dying my hair haha

Anchal Singh: I relate I'll redye it again from the bottom

dhara brahmbhatt: I dont know if you are going to reply my comments but hopeful about it .. I box dyed my hair to ash brown color and it turned out that my roots are orangy then the tips i had black hair and now i want to go bck to the normal hair what should i do ? Should i dye my hair all over with black from sallys or buy a color remover .. My hair looks so bad on the roots pls help

outroseok: i did this the other day... does anyone know how to fix it??? /: and i used that exact same brand of hair dye, it's never happened to me before w any other brand so i guess i won't be using that brand anymore!

Sherry the gypsy Salzman: Your hair doesnt look so bad, the ends will fade

39nutterbutter: this just happen to me today so can i go get another box and do it again so i can get that color all over

Kimmy: Omg, I can cut my hair in long layers, looks great, but the colouring , let's just say I colour outside the lines. Not happy Jan.
