Welcome to the life of her, my name is James Atkinson. Thank you for joining me in this week's episode. Now this week's episode is a follow-up to last week's episode where we did a very simple Express, balayage technique. If you haven't seen that it will be linked at the end of this video now before I tell you about this week's video, I wanted to share with you something that is happening in the background than the life of hair. I have a dream or an ambition, to make the biggest and best digital education outlet in the hairdressing industry, no matter where it is in the world, and this is going to require lots of time money and effort. Now I have made an exclusive opportunity for you guys to one get content that you can't find anywhere else, that's by me and two helped me: expand the life of hair into something new, which will be called the life of hair digital Academy. Now, how far away the life of head-to de l'académie is well is all down to how much support I get through my patreon. Now some of you may already know what patreon is, and some of you may not patreon is a place where creators can be supported by their community. So down in the link in the description is my patreon page. If you follow that link, you will be able to see what benefits you'll be able to get by subscribing to my patreon from as little as $ 4 a month one coffee a month, you will be able to get exclusive content on lives through the internet. With me every single month, not only that there is two of the tiers, depending on how much you want to invest and how much you want to get back now, if you have anything that you would like to know about becoming a patreon of the life of Hair, then, please hit me up in my DMS on instagram at the life of hair 1. Alternatively, head down to the comments section on this video and put your questions in there, I would love to help you out and I would love to see you over on my patreon page very very soon. Thank you for listening now. Today'S video is going to be all about reversing a balayage technique, taking something existing blonde and making it into a balayage, a technique that i think is so powerful in the salon environment, one that I use on a daily basis when I am actually in the not In lockdown, the thing about this technique is that it's absolutely bum proof once you get one element of this technique right and as we go through this you'll see exactly what that element is now I'm going to do just the left-hand side of the mannequin head, as We look at it on the screen and the right-hand side, I'm going to then ombre, but I'm going to do that in a separate video which is going to come out on Wednesday two reasons one. I didn't want to make this video complicated, where I did two separate techniques and get it all confused and two in the next video. I want to discuss with you the differences between balayage and ombre, because I think it's really important that we're all well aware of what the differences are. So without talking anymore and as some of you say in the comments I love to talk in my intros. Well, that's right! I am a hairdresser. After all, I do love to talk anyway. If you enjoyed this episode, you know what to do smash that thumbs up and subscribe. If you haven't already and chats me down in the comments - and I am absolutely grateful for every one of you who interacts with me on a weekly basis - it is very much appreciated. Have a wonderful week, stay safe, stay, sane and I'll, see you very soon. Someone asked to see the front of this mannequin head on the comments section, so here's your opportunity now to have a little look at what the front of the mannequin head looks like. Okay, super now back to the quarantine marigolds for this in case anybody's, watching this in the future, we're in quarantine at the moment due to unforeseen circumstances of unsaid virus, I'm not really sure about whether we can mention it on YouTube. So I'm not going to say the name anyway. Everyone knows what I mean. So I've got these lovely black kind of serial killer, esque marigolds on anyway. That is nothing to do with the technique. As I mentioned, we're going to do a OSH, reverse balayage. On this side and then on the opposite side, we're gon na do an ombre. Now the ombre technique is going to be in sunday's video. So do wait for that, and I would have done it on this, but I always think doing two techniques. On the same video, too long, and maybe a bit confusing so let's get on with now the first part of this technique is really really simple: the ridge that is above the ear anybody said what it is right in the comment section now, the ridge that is Above the ear I mentioned it so often in my videos - that's right. It'S the parietal Ridge. Now the parietal Ridge is a really really useful bone when it comes to doing a root stretching technique. Now this is the thing that we're really going to focus on. Is the root stretch, because the root stretch is so ultra important when it comes to any technique that requires a blend really now we're going to utilize this curvature on the head? What I'm going to do now is I'm going to show you the motion that I've been using. I apply my product and has my brush comes down and the head starts to curve away. My brush then comes off the head like that, so I'm starting to stretch the product down the head even before I've started to try and blend the product. Now the parietal Ridge drops into the uplift of bone so in naturally going to want to drop our section down towards the ups of the bone, because we're going to utilize the upsets bone in exactly the same way throughout the back. Once we've done that, we then can separate the hair down into two quadrants in this particular instance. It would be four quadrants if you were doing the whole head, obviously just mirror what we're doing here on the opposite side, and I would probably recommend putting it into the natural part wherever that natural parting was going to be of the client and coloring to the Parting, that's always a useful thing to do. I believe so remember we're going to utilize the occipital bone in exactly the same way as we did previously with the parietal Ridge. We come right down to the obstacle to bone and, as the head curves away, our brush is just going to come straight off perfect. You will hopefully be able to see in the light here that the product looks quite shiny glossy shall we say, then what we're going to do is take our pin tail comb, we're going to angle the teeth of the pintail comb towards the ceiling. We'Re going to go in 50 % with the way down where we started to paint so in, like that teeth up to the ceiling, and then we're going to come down the hair and out, can you see on the teeth of my comb? There is a buildup of product. The beauty of this means that this product doesn't end up on the hair down here, which is where we get lines and marks and demarcation and all those terrible things that we get from when we have our comb going in parallel to the hair, because you can End up with blobs and marks now: does it work through I'll try and make a mistake a bit later on, so you can see how to fix it right we're going to do exactly the same thing here. You take a reasonable size section. It doesn't want to be too thick, 50 % of the way down in square teeth, face or towards the ceiling down and out now you'll be able to see again the products built upon the teeth, but it's not anywhere on the hair here, which is uber uber Uber important now, as you get better at this, you can be faster. You can see now, I'm not getting too excited about the size of my section. Why I am excited about is where the comb goes in and where the teeth are angled, that is ultra ultra important. It'S not going into this very, very high saturation area. It'S going enough way down and when then we are combing out and that is making sure that we don't get any product on to the hair where we didn't want it perfect. So that is the first quarter complete. This is actually a reasonably fast technique. Once you get it absolutely on point, and I think most of you will with a little bit of practice, it's not actually that difficult lots of people think that reach stretching brute blending all those things I like some voodoo magic, but really really truthfully they're, not that Difficult so the next thing we need to do now just go back in and paint our ribs right onto this front. Section. Remember we're still using the parietal Ridge as our marker for this technique, where we need to comb down to so that is ultra important to bear in mind, so we're going to do exactly the same thing with all of our sections. However, on this section I'm going to now try and make a mistake, so you can see we're going to put the comb in we're going to put it in too high and we're going to get we're going to keep the teeth parallel to the hair and we're Going to stop and pull out - and we will see if we can make a mistake, we're going to go in too far into the roots. This is way too close to the head: we're going to go down with our teeth parallel and it's created a line of color there. Can you see that? Okay, that's a big boo-boo, isn't it and how do we fix that now? Well, the way that we fix, that is, that we go in straight away if it with our secondary color. Okay, we need to make sure that that line doesn't have time to process. What do we do? Well, we're going to go into our stretching technique again, pull some of the product down towards the line. Okay, so we've got darker color coming further down on this particular section. We'Re then going to go in with a weaving technique, and this is going to be how we do most of the rest of our dimension, but we're not going to still get onto that. What we're going to do is try and eliminate the line. The mistake that we made further down the head first, so it's really important to then bring down this dimension further down the head, so I've done a ribbon weave technique and I'm going to feed it further down the head that is going to help eliminate that line In the hair, now a lot of you will be now saying. Well what about the pieces that you left out James from that weave? Okay, that's a really really good question! This is my end color, which is roughly two shades lighter than my own color I'll. Tell you at the end of the video what the product is and what mixing ratios and tones that I've used last recap of the route stretch make sure there's no knots in it. That'S a good one as well make sure the hair is free of knots. Okay! It'S really really high gloss here, then. What we're going to do is we're going to go in with our comb 50 % of the way through the high grass area tilt the teeth up towards the ceiling and come down here, we're going to tilt our teeth out and come down beautiful, simple easy to Do technique to create a seamless route stretch. We could just elect that process now and I am absolutely confident it would be seamlessly blended, but we're going to take it one step further in this particular instance: we're going to give ourselves more dimension and of more of a balayage look. It'S really simple. I'Ve got about two and a half inch size section here. It'S up to you. I would go on the thicker side. Generally speaking with these particular techniques, balayage is are not dainty techniques by any stretch of anyone's imagination. Now I'm going to take me to take two pieces that I've just weaved out and I'm going to go in with my level 8, I'm going to overlap the satin area and then I'm going to work my level 8 all the way through to the end, once I'Ve applied the level 8 color, and I've worked it through like that. I'M then going to take my level 6 color, which is my root color, and then I'm going to work that further down the head. I'M not going to, however, take it all the way through to the ends in this instance, but it will nearly be all the way to the ends. I want all the ends to have a bit of blonde in them. So now we've got like a level 6 that will run to about here and we'll have a level 8 that will blend nicely around this area and drift out through towards the ends. This is going to add beautiful dimension to our color and will ultimately give us that real ally, our effect so again, don't be too dainty with the sections. Okay, just want to make sure that you've got plenty of hair to work with Bali. Ages are not superfine sections; usually a balayage has got quite a lot of contrast in it. So dig deep, all the way through the section and then weave out the sections that you want and decide which which sections are going to be like and which sections are going to be dark. These are going to be my three dark strands. I'M going to put them up here out of the way I'm gon na do my light ones. First, here's my three lighter strands, so I'm gon na go in with my lighter color. Now I'm going to overlap my dark color and then using this scissor motion. I'M just going to extend my saturation down the hair towards the ends, really really simple: we don't have to spend loads and loads of time blending the two together. There is a reason for that, because we did such a good job of blending down or root area when we do a great root stretch, it saves lots of time, effort and energy when it comes to the rest of the technique. So what we're going to do now, I'm going to come in with our dark color that we did our roots with we're going to just overlap where we blended and we're going to work the product down the head. Just like this! So, but we're not going to go all the way to the ends. If you wanted to go all the way to the ends and create dimension and darker color through the ends, then you could be my guest. It'S your color! You decide what's good for you. What you want to do, but in this particular instance, I'm just going to feather away from the end I'm going to blend but not drag the saturation all the way down towards the ends. Okay last section on the top and we're going to do exactly the same thing. Take those deep weave sections decide which ones are light and dark are going to be and then go in and stretch down whichever color is needed. In this instance, I'm going to go with the dark again stretch that down the head. Now, just off-camera - I don't know if you see me wiping my hands, it's really important to wipe your hands in between sections. It makes a world of difference to cross contamination of hair color so again, go in with our lighter color, now really simple, this technique, but super effective and super quick for the salon, I'm doing it slower for you guys to see, but when I'm in the salon, I can get this batch done really fast and it is super effective. I didn't really always start from the bottom up. You could start from the top down, but it gets a bit fiddly as I'm working through this we'll have a quick recap on what we need to do. Remember the roots stretch is super important and it speeds up the technique. A lot so get practicing on that root, stretch and perfect it so that you don't have to worry about blending too much. Remember the size of the sections are important. They don't want to be small sections and you need to dig all the way through the sections and then make sure that you've decide which one of your sections is dark and which one is light. That is especially important around the face, because around the face you might want to leave out some lightness that to frame around the face a little bit lots of people really like that. Look these days. This is going to be my light. Three three strands that I'm going to paint now in the last section here delete this one light. I always aim to leave the top sections as my liked pieces. As generally. If someone wants that balayage effect, they are looking to have that lightness visible. So you know try and keep these top three strands light. Obviously, if they want to settle end result and definitely don't keep them light and use these ones as your dark, it's really sort of straightforward rule of thumb there right. Then there we go job done. That is this side complete. I want to now let this process for twenty minutes. I know a lot of you like to know what formulas I use. This was redken shades, eq 6mb, with a little bit of 7gb, so around 30 30 grams of six NB to 10 grams of 7gb. That is the root color and the lower darker dimension color and then for the ends, its 8gb, with a little tiny bit of 9 V through it. So that again, ratio-wise was about 35 grams of 8 MB to 5 grams of 9 V. That'S redkin shades, eq! Okay process the technique and i have styled it - i'm not going to keep you much longer. I know this episode has run into a behemoth one, but there was so many points that I really wanted to share with you and reiterate, and I really really wanted to drive home this technique, because once you understand it, once you get it, you will find your Life in the salon and balayage Inge and um brain and all these different techniques that are so popular at the moment. These techniques can get you out of such a sticky situation at times. So here we have the finished result, a very, very multi-dimensional, very soft, pretty balayage technique now on this side of the mannequin head is an hombre. So I'm not going to show you this. This is for Sunday's episode, where we are going to discuss how to create an ombre using a very, very similar technique to what you saw here and then we are going to discuss the differences, the wise the way as the house and what you should be guiding. Your clients into dependent on their hair type and how they wear their hair. So I won't show you this side this side, but this is the technique that we have just seen me creates and, as I said, easy easy super easy to do but creates absolutely all don't show the ombre, but you can have a little look at the front There creates absolutely stunning balayage effect with very, very easy to do technique and, yes, I know a lot of you can write all this must take forever in the beginning, like anything when you're not used to doing it. Yes, it does take time, but eventually it's just a walk in the park, so I hope you've enjoyed this episode and if you have then don't forget, leave that thumbs up button chat to me down in the comment section subscribe. If you haven't already and don't forget, check out my patreon, even if you don't join, it would be much appreciated if you could share it with people who, you think might get some benefit from it have a wonderful week and I'll see you on Sunday for another Episode this hombre episode actually of the life of hair

HOLLY JOHNSON: Hi James, after doing a full head bleach on my head for the past few years I decided to grow the roots out and do a reversed balyage for a more maintainable look. THANK YOU for this video, the combing technique is so simple and so effective, I am in no way a professional but after endless hours of scrolling through root melts on youtube, Im so happy I found yours!! explained so well and easy to follow- a talent in both hair and teaching!

Yein Ji: I just did this today and my hair looks SO good, exactly how I wanted it to turn out. Thank you so much!!!!

Stephanie Masten: This tutorial is just what I was looking for! I went a little too high with the bleach for a balayage and I was wonder how, or if we could, stretch the roots without bleaching anymore, you answered all my questions! Thank you so much!

michelle peters: James, I absolutely LOVE watching your videos. You explain EVERYTHING that you do with great ease and understandability! I share your videos with my Co workers all the time. I’ve been in the industry for over 30yrs! Lol! And your tutorials are brilliant! I’ve implemented a few of your techniques on a few clients. And my results are ON POINT! Thank you for sharing your expertise. If you ever travel to the US to do any shows, I’ll be there! just can’t tell you enough how much I love you! Right then

Ida Ekberg: This tutorial saved my hair. Thank you so much I had a neutral level 6 on my hair that was very very flat. But thanks to you advise I could save it. And it turned out fantastic. It looks like my natural hair with great depth. You literally saved my hair and my mental health. Thank you so so much.

Meghan Atha: Out of all the professionals that I’ve watched on YouTube, you have been the most enjoyable. You share your formulas and you explain everything so well.

Anon: I was always told it’s “impossible not to get bleed marks while doing a melt” and come to find out it’s literally how you use your comb. WOW! Can’t wait to try that technique, it will save me much time not having to go through and re lighten the bleed marks

𝗍ᥲᥒᥡᥲ_mᥲrіᥱ: Thank you so much for this video!! I haven’t seen one that goes into this much detail with root stretching anywhere. Definitely gave me some “aha” moments as to why I’ve had some of the problems I’ve had. I pay monthly for quite a few educational subscriptions now but I would love to be able to support your journey to your digital program. I learn so much real salon life from you already for free here on you tube that I think it’s time to re-budget my education expenses lol . Thank you again for all your hard work and time ☺️

Joanne Williamson: Just followed this colouring technique on a client, it worked out just perfect!!!! Thank you so much for making colouring so simple to follow xxxx

Sherrie Abbott: Oh my god, thank you so much for this. It’s educated me so much. I was dreading my client tomorrow. I’m now excited to to use your technique. Your awesome!! Thanks again! I can’t wait to watch all your other videos to expand my knowledge. X

Bubblekittea: I think you're just absolutely amazing with hair, and explaining things. I idolize your work, you deserve to go so far. You replied to one of my messages once, but I was too nervous to respond and I felt so bad for bothering you in the first place. But thank you for being you!

Andrea Bartoli: Lo ví recién!! Qué hermoso quedó el color en la muñeca, muy buena combinación de técnicas!!♥️

Ashley Ciara: Thank you so much!!! I’m an upcoming stylist and am about to graduate cosmetology school on Wednesday and I honestly was feeling so discouraged with color. It almost felt like every time I was missing the mark but this video finally worked! I actually did a root shadow and I was very surprised that this time it turned out how I wanted it to. So thank you! I truly appreciate this video. Definitely one of my favorites I’ve learned from.

VIP21girl: Oh, this is exactly what I was looking for! ❤ Just a question: what should I do with my side fringe bang?( It's not that long). Should I go with the darkest color all the way or adding some highlights too? Thank you so much! ❤

Dee D: I styled my own blonde hair using this technique using 4N+5N for roots and 7G+8N for ends it was super easy and came out great! Thank you very much!!!

Ka`uilani Kim: I did this with my niece's hair after I dyed it red. She wanted to go blue and had considerable regrowth... I bleached out the red and with no experience just used the comb and blended out her roots... I was so proud of myself with the results! She had a nice shadow root and people asked her where she got it done so they could get the same result! I wish I could do my own hair, though

Julie Kim: Beautiful! Thank you so much for the tutorial!

Keli Johnston: I REALLY APPRECIATE ALL YOUR time & energy you put into helping me learn new techniques every week!! (Hugs♡) Stay safe hair besties!

Carrianne Burris: I can one hundred percent vouch that this works because I have done it on myself. I will say you get more of a root melt than a balayage but its still stunning and beautifully blended. Also much easier than some techniques!

Vera Theron de Hen: Thank you thank you thank you. You've helped me get over a huge hair heffalump , to help me get back to my original brown (with a twist, thanks to you :)

Anna White: I absolutely love this technique. I am going to practice on my teenage daughter as I have a client next week who is box level 10 blonde and she wants a balayage . This is going to be the ideal technique. Thank you for sharing your knowledge. You are inspiring.

Amy Eitel: Thank you! I've been a stylist since 1994. Thank you for showing the technique to reverse! Turned out great!

Haylee Zoller: Hey, thank you man, from the bottom of my ~heart~ I can do this now because of you and it's turned out great on every client. I've done traditional highlights my whole career and this has always scared me. I want you to know you really have helped someone!! Feel good about that. I hope much success and happiness for you

Cathy Howell: Hi James, I've been following your channel for quite a while and I absolutely love every technique you've demonstrated!! I could really use your advice on my hair situation. I've got about 4 inches of regrowth since I last had babylights. My natural regrowth is about a level 7 with golden undertones and the babylights are a level 9 and yellow as I haven't toned them in months. I would love to move away from the upkeep of a full head of babylights and try the technique you just did in this video but using a slightly lighter blend of colors. My question is before beginning the reverse balayage, what can I use if I want to lighten my natural base color a little because I find it a bit too dark? I've tried using a permanent level 8 ash on the regrowth in the past and it lightened to a brassy orange. My goal is to have a beige or ashier toned base color. Any advice you can give me would be much appreciated!! Thanks, Cathy

Julianne Brown: Thank you for this! I love your videos! I just found you! I'm pregnant for the first time and struggling with my hair mojo Needing lots of new techniques and inspiration ♡♡♡

Two Kays: Thank you SO MUCH for this video. It drastically corrected my awful, chunky highlights into a beautifully balayaged hair. I couldn’t get an appointment for 2 another weeks and I wasn’t going back to the place where they messed up my hair in the first place. I felt helpless. After watching countless YouTube videos, I luckily came across your video. Equipped with a sense of courage from “how much worse could it possibly get?” I grabbed two boxed hair dyes and followed your video. I LOVE the result. Your explanation is amazing; so easy to understand and follow. Thank you!

Jane Smith: Thank you for a great video. It seems to me this technique would work best on an even canvas. I'm currently at a level 6-7 from box dye. My roots are a natural ashy level 5 with lots of grey. I'm thinking of doing a color removal and then doing a bleach wash (minus the roots) to bring it up to a level 8 before doing this technique. Good idea or no? Should I include my roots in the bleach wash? I worry about hot roots but maybe the level 6 I'm using for the balayage will cover that?

Shaun C: Hi James. Thank you so much for all your hard work in making these educational videos and for sharing your tested techniques with us. Watching your videos are so inspirational because they're easy to follow and to understand. I've been out of a salon environment for 20 or more years, but I still do family and friends. I now feel I've lost all my confidence doing hair because I'm not doing it everyday and my skills are rusty. I miss doing hair but my mental health got the better of me working so up and close with people. I would much rather have done the education and product side of Hairdressing than working behind a chair every day. Good luck with your future plans you truly deserve success with all your hard work and passion. Shaun, Nottingham, UK

Alicja M: Thank you for posting this today, I have literally been humming and hawing over how to do a root stretch on myself and this is super easy instructions.

Vivian Torres: I love the end result and all tips you give ! As a cosmo student during a pandemic and feeling like I'm not getting all the experience i should be getting working on clients this is great technique to start practicing!

Crystal Williams: Thank you so much for this!!!!! I’ve seen so many videos of reverse balayage that just overwhelm me! This is doable and with absolutely beautiful results! Much appreciated!!!

Sara Nieto Isaza: Thanks for sharing this with us, you’re an amazing teacher

Megan: Hey james, I wonder if you can help me - I’m faced with an all over ice blonde that has 3 inch grown out roots which are a strawberry blonde colour. Her hair is a tad longer than shoulder length, and she wants darker ashier roots that melt into the ice blonde. Am I right in thinking this technique would work? Do you have any tips? Would love to get your opinion on this! Thanks x

Amanda Lee: I’m a cosmetology student and this was an awesome tutorial! Genius❣️

Sparrow Cheeeeps!: Love your uploads! This damn lockdown is no fun- but hey! Look at all the stuff we're learning! Thankyou loads! Xx

beezkanal: I did this at home to my hair and it worked!!

Amy Trumbull: That was fabulous demonstration and soon I’m going to do a reverse balayage on myself to blend my roots into my blonde and I feel much more confident now. Thanks!

Irm A: Thanks a lot! I followed the instructions It worked beautifully on my hair

C. C. C.: I think your technique is excellent thank you for sharing and teaching us and I don't think this video was too long whatsoever, You certainly can't leave out any steps so you did an excellent job on covering everything. No complaints about the time whatsoever.

BlueCrossBeauty: So helpful! Thank you! It turned out amazing!

Suzanne Lyle: I find this a little stressful to do. Worrying about touching dark to the light ends. I think I’ll practice more. Thank you!

Moshographer: This might be easy enough for me to do on myself! Thank you for sharing.

Aoife Gallagher: I have been looking for something to explain this for 2 weeks thanks so much I can now reverse the all over blonde I thought I wanted

Lady M: this was so beautiful. I did the ombre technique myself and looks awesome but I have a lot of orange and yellow. You mentioned for ends the first time around 8GB with 9v and the second time around you said 8NB. Can you pretty please clarify the formula for the ends again

Carol: This is the best fix for my overly white bleached hair. It really worked. It made it look salon perfect. I was really surprised at how good it looked. Thanks

Selena Kurmaly: Enjoy your videos the most !!! Best and clear explanations !! Am a hairstylist, and have picked up lots of tips !

Cheryl Ardis: Wow. This was a perfect video. I JUST did my daughters hair this morning and used your technique. The outcome was the best its ever looked. She is 15 years old and I refuse to let her permanently change her hair color, the compromise is I use demi color when she wants to change her root color to blend with her natural light blonde hair. I am not a hairdresser, but I do a lot of hair for friends, color and blends always came naturally to me. Never have I cut, thats someone's job

Izabela Litwin: You are amazing !! Thank you so much for sharing your knowledge in such an easy way . Effects of your work are stunning !! ✨

Christie Som: Omg. Thank you. Thank you! Your technique really works! I remembered using a comb to try and blend but I did not tilt the comb back like you did and it did not work. They way you did and explained everything so well. So I already had highlights but slightly messed up some areas at the root section and tried your technique using a medium brown hair dye (combed 2x since I’m doing it on myself) for my roots and it worked!!! I did not need to use a light toner at all for the bottom part. So we’ll blended in and I love it! I feel like a pro now. You saved my hair just when I needed it.

landa howell: Loved this video, thank you for sharing. You by far are the best at explaining what you do, which is very helpful.

Georgia Burgess: Hi, If your client is happy with the blonde on the ends already would you just use a clear on the ends to smudge into the darker root colour or just not put anything on the ends?x

Evan Carlinsmith: Such a beautiful result. I want to ask can you do this same technique along side using a lightener? And how would you price this as a service for a client if you just did the root stretching and tonal blending? Thanks for making this video I’ve learned so much.

Laurencia O'Brien: LIFE SAVER! Thank you so much for this helpful info ❤️❤️❤️

purple9721: Can anyone help? I'm going to try this on a wig, only thing is the wig in the video already had a slightly darker root but I'm going to be using all over light ash blonde hair, should I still be able to pull it off alright? Also, am I better to do one side first? Or start at the back? I'm just concerned about the dye being left to develop on one side for longer than the other and it looking dodgy...? (I know he only did one side for the purpose of the video) Alsooo, Im gona try make the wig from scratch (sew wefts onto the cap and ventilate a silk top closure - God help me haha!) I was thinking I'd be better to make a slight dark root, just as a starting point BEFORE sewing all the hair on and then do the root drag and balayage as normal once the whole unit is sewn onto the cap - so that I can avoid getting dye near the cap and dont end up dying the lace/silk top or something. Sound like a good idea? Yay, nay? Never done this before, shitting it, any help much appreciated!

Alexandria Valdez: Thank you so much! I was clueless as to why I kept getting lines in my blending! I thought it was the tint brush handle that was making them. Frustrating! Learned something today!

Lieve Van Dyk: Watching and hearing your video's bring me the same relaxational feeling as watching BOB Ross (the painter). I love it!

Christine Cox: In the mid 1980s I overbleached my hair, I lived in London luckily and the salon I went to put colour on my roots and combed it through and the effect was a fine highlighted effect, I was impressed, I thought he'd just made the technique up for me!!

Jill Jacobs: This could not have at a better time, I have a lady coming in Friday who wants color (6n) new growth covered and dimension without going lighter!!! Thank you ever so much, you did it again!!! Take care cheers

Kenya Zuniga: I did exactly this when I was 16/17? And honestly my hair looked GREAT! Im now 24 and I'm soooo scared to do this to my hair

Shivam Anand: Hello james i am big fan of the way you teach and all your videos are an inspiration . I have been confused with one issue which is (Should the hairs be toned whilr they are towel dried ( slightly wet) or fully dried) Because lots of time if the toning/depositing is done on 100% dry hairs ,it creates a lot of depth in the hairs. Looking forward for your expertise over this issue

Violetta: Fantastic video. Thank you for showing us how to do this.

Miss Coleus: I really like watching your channel. You are very detailed in all your work..,a good educator indeed. I've learnt a lot from you. Yes, I love watching every minute of it.

Izah Gallagher: This helped me with one of my clients so much!! Thank you!

Layna Penhallegon: Hey love this video! Just curious, how long will this color last from shades eq? And also, how much would this service cost in a salon?

Freepalestine One: Wow absolutely fantastic , thank you so much , I finally feel confident to give this a go .

The Updo System Tutorials: Just what I needed! My updos on my blonde head look flat and this will help them photograph with much more natural looking dimension! Keep me in mind if you choose to add an updo component to your channel!

Jessicca Angelov: Gorgeous. How about when it grows out? How do you keep up with it and how to make sure you're not overlapping lightener when you want to rebleach closer to the roots?

Heather Shrake: This was so great!! I wish I saw it it last night before I did my hair, now I'm going to use what i learned and attempt to fix it!! Thank you

Stephanie: I prefer doing it on damp hair, and I take wonky "w" sections on the back area of the quadrants. Its best to dampen the blonde zones . I lay it on foil. If the client needs to move or use the toilet...youll risk having a disaster

Lucia Lapina: The best explanation on youtube so far, thank you! What do I have to do to keep the color? I have to wash my hair every day and it gets kind of brassy and weird after a while...

Yohana SirenaYLS: Beautiful job like always

Jean Gotting: Amazing explanation and techniques...thanks so much!

pleasurerace: Hi James - so before you drag down with comb you’ve painted the full head of roots? Or do you drag after painting each section? Thanks for this video

Angeline Biswas: Please do more mannequin colors! Since the UK is in lockdown I’m sure you have a bit of time. I love watching these

Ziv Benigoyev [zivgames]: awsome technique :) i love your way of thinking, i also use this exact technique. sometimes i take sections and draw upside down triangles with zigzag base from the top of the head to turn blonde into balayage. or just paint weaved sections of hair with diffrent base color to add dimensions to any color. i use regular base color, nothing special even for toning the whole hair , i don't get why people buy redken shades to tone the hair when they can just tone with regular base color combed from the roots down +shampoo in the washing bowl and mix it with all the hair leave it for 1-2 mins. once i even had crazy idea and toned blond hair with a dot of black base color and alot of shampoo, it became ashy grey blond as i wanted. but be careful it may turn green if you don't use it on wet hair with alot of shampoo, and you must comb the hair with the product very fast evenly through all the head it works fast. i must suggest that you check youtube for " ZIGZAG BALAYAGE", you may love this technique. and i woul'd love to see you perform this technique on video, you are the best teacher on youtube, very fun to watch.

Heather G: Works perfectly! I do this as well...but your instruction gave me a few "aha"s. Thank you James
