Model Kicked Off Antm Over Haircut?! Photographer Reacts

Let's talk about the episode where Cassandra refuses to cut her already short hair during a photoshoot.

You'Re not ready to cut your hair. No, you know, i really don't have time for this today, so you just got ta leave my set okay. What before we get started, i want to talk to you about cassandra and her decision to not cut her hair, which was also a decision to leave this competition. Today, i'm reacting to a photo shoot from america's next top model, where mr jay kicks out one of the models for refusing to cut her hair they're, not happy about this. Let'S take a look, shall we hey? Girls? Hey so today, we've got this hollywood special effects style shoot going on what you guys are actually going to be doing is running on this moving runway, but you'll be running as if you are scared of something behind you, but we are not telling you what that Other element is and you're going to post effect everything else. In the end, someone went to the gym and fell in love with the treadmill, because they've been popping up on this show ever since we're see they just randomly like. We need to use this treadmill for this. It'S essential to the photo shoot today. You girls are all going to be styled as fashion victims. Y'All are going to have something a little wrong about you, but you're all going to look right all right. So i'm going to take you guys into hair makeup right now and jayla cassandra. I want to talk to you real quick over here by the couch okay. Today you're going to be going on a treadmill. I don't know if it's something that everyone wants to hear in the morning. I don't know if i would be okay with that. I'D be like it's a little early for physical activity. Don'T you think, maybe we'll wait till 7am. Is that, okay with you, so we're actually going to take out your extensions because they feel like they're, not working with you? Does she look much better with the shorter hair personally, everyone's calling me albira we're actually going to trim your hair a little shorter and leave it long and then scissor and comb up the back a little bit. You may not like it at first, but you have to get into it. You have to try to see the good in it initially. What tyra really wanted was like a mia faro cut like she wants this all a lot shorter see, i'm not really comfortable cutting it again. When i haven't even gotten a chance to really work it yet yeah. You think. If you turn to a client say you know, i really don't want to cut my hair they're, like you know what thanks cassandra, bye-bye yeah, i just i can't do a shoot without you having your hair, the way they want it all right so have some breakfast Think about it and i'll ask in a few minutes. Okay, i have some breakfast think about it and i'll ask you in a few minutes, she already told you what she thinks about it. She just said: she's not comfortable, cutting her hair, shorter and she's right. She hasn't even had time to work with it, yet we're not going to change our minds just because you offer us a continental breakfast. Thank you. It was delicious by the way it doesn't seem like he's asking her or giving her an option. It seems like he's telling her this is what's going to happen and because she put up a little bit of resistance, i don't think this episode is going to go well for her. Well, she can be towards the end of the day. Are they coming out, though? They'Re, just taking a long time if you want to stay i'll still, i still have respect for you for even going up and talking to them. I mean i do want to stay, and i wanted to take the pictures and really get a chance to show it off now that i finally have the confidence to back this up. You know what gives us our first instincts don't go against it there you, yes, love that see she bree knows. Bree knows she's kind of subtly she's like i'm, not trying to be too obvious, but this is what's she's, giving some good advice there. Just trying not try she's not trying to upset the judges. She'S like i didn't, give her advice, but also do what your gut tells you and what her gut was telling. Her was not to not do that. Let me see cassandra's makeover like did. She have short hair cycle five because if they hit, if she went from long hair to that cup, and then they wanted to cut it more i'd, be like this is too much: oh, my god. No, they didn't dye her. They dyed her hair blonde and they cut it short. I oh my god. She had like dark long hair. Oh, my god, they gave her a very drastic makeover, so i understand why she wouldn't want to go even shorter, like the probably that hair the length was already a lot for her and she's just now getting used to it and they're like okay, we're gon na Cut more in this shoot it's rather complicated. We have to act, scared, act, beautiful and run in five inch heels at the same time. Something'S coming back at you about to grab you just scared and pretty good. Just keep going, that's great, i would fall. I would literally fall changing it up with her face and her body, and she was very believable on film. It'S coming for you, you're scared, something's chasing you something's coming to get you lisa had amazing body language, but when you can't marry the body language with the face, you don't have a photo. I just keep listening. I thought she was doing. Amazing were the heels necessary. They were cute yes, but were they necessary again, you don't have like crocs back there. You don't have a pair of nikes come forward a little bit there. You go perfect, think pretty, but still scared almost like. You can't believe this is happening to you, because this show the little jew, hi great look back behind you and then look over in front of you really expressive. So good go go karen's! Stone! Yes, helped her with today's shoot because she didn't overact. It'S good! Thank you good job. She did so good relax. You can hold the purse in a different way if you like make it feel natural love that that's not natural girl, no pretend like you're cassandra with a new haircut you're running from the scissors. Sarah looked, why would he say that he's like we thought you should all know about this? I'M liking, mr jay's direction. Everything seems good so far and the girls are doing amazing. I'M breaking my ankle. I'M hitting my head. I'M like falling right into the c-stand everything crashes falls apart. The whole the whole place just the whole studio caves in. If this were me, if i was modeling for this, i've been like that was my bed. I hope you guys have insurance by chance. Do you do you have, because i don't personally but that's why i'm on the show you know when's lunch, sarah looked really uncomfortable. She was trying so hard to pose in front of the camera that i don't even know if we got a great shot, but that's what she's supposed to do. Look a little more over here over here. Keep doing that, though, but this way brie really surprised me today, i honestly thought bree was going to fall flat. She really pulled it together. Today, great my weave is sweating. I got ta go all right. I think what i look like just be. It make sense. No, i better rock this photo shoot, or else that is going to be the end of me. Stop analyzing just get into it someone's coming behind you, like, ah maybe a little bit more expression, just jogged on the platform and that's about it. Mr jay's, like she's. Just jogging on the platform, i'm like that's great stay here: good news, she's uh, that's a treadmill, mr j! After all, when she's sitting around with the girls and goofing and laughing she's, such a life kim never brings that to set yeah because you guys are there. Oh, i just i said what i said. I said what i said. I think, nicole, is afraid of being she's, afraid of being the model she wants, because she's casting she got down on her she's just afraid, but she is supposed to be afraid on this photo shoot so she's listening to the directions - okay, great just so we're clear On that, you did ask, you did say, scared running for your life. Okay, you got the treadmill for this, that's what we want. Well, we want this cute, it's a good haircut, my hair's short again and it's easy to deal with. Everyone loves it and i love it too. That'S great! She likes it. That'S all you can ask me it's on the back of you beautiful. These are good jayla, keep it going good right in there. She worked it. The new short haircut looks amazing on jayla excellent. Go ahead, kyle you're, holding on to your jewelry, like no don't steal, my necklace, protect your jewels again, do it again, kyle just kind of jogged and grabbed her hair and that's not believing it in the scene, i'm not gon na. I do. I do like mr jay's direction with the ideas he's giving the models he he really is helping direct them. I'M not going to screw you over. You know i have your back. Oh, yes, i'm just going to round out the front a little bit, so you can go on a little bit. It wasn't just cutting an inch and a half of hair. For me, it was the last straw and then completely trying to change who i was rob's ready, wow to cut your hair because we're gon na start here, i'm not gon na cut it today. Oh i love this so much, but the oh. This is not going to end well for her she's getting eliminated for sure there's. No, they will not tolerate this behavior. This opinion. The look on mr jay's face he's just like. Oh, you want to go against the queen. Okay. I am so proud of her standing up for herself and saying no good for useless honestly. That must not have been easy. He gave her the option of having breakfast remember: everybody he's like i'm gon na. Let you uh enjoy a meal and i'm gon na come back and when i i'm gon na ask you again, but i want you to do what we want. What is such a surprise he's like she had a bagel. She i saw her drinking milk and she's still she's still uncomfortable. For some reason, it should be her choice. Okay, i don't care if this is a show for the makeovers. Oh that's fun, but at the same time, if she gets cut, she's gon na have to live with this hairstyle for a while. The hair does not grow back quick. I told him. I wasn't going to cut my hair anymore that i didn't think i needed to in order to be successful at this, so you're not ready to cut your hair. No, you know, i really don't have time for this today, so you just got ta leave my set. Okay, what to leave this back? I want to cut an extra inch off her hair. I said to her: do you realize by not complying with this haircut? Where does that put you and she said? Well, i guess i'm going to go home. No. What do you mean you guys? What do you mean she said she's she's, going to go home, you told her to leave the set just because she doesn't want to cut her hair an inch like it's that big of a deal like it's gon na make all the difference like it's literally. Nothing. Don'T why what's the big deal they act like they literally act like she refused to do the photo, shoot or put on a piece of clothing. Her hair does not need to be shorter, for this photo shoot. Where does that put you and she said? Well, i guess i'm going to go already. She already cut her hair the first time too, so she did comply the first time. So, what's the problem you want to keep cutting her hair. I don't understand it's not an important photo shoot. Sorry, i know some models who have cut their hair or dyed their eyebrows for big campaigns or big jobs, they're being paid a lot of money, i'm sure it would not. It wouldn't be a big deal to them and if they were okay with that, like they wouldn't care, but for something like this, i totally understand where the model's coming from. I have to be myself and i want to walk out of this competition, knowing that i did what i think was right in the long run, and that includes not letting people try and change the way i am. Is he calling tyra tyra? It'S jay, no he's snitching real fast. This man, he called tyra real, quick he's like she didn't want. She didn't go for it. What happened? I'M going home, i'm gon na go back to texas and i'm gon na get some higher extensions and hopefully you'll see me as a future miss usa. I love that. I hope that you are the future. Miss usa is someone gon na look at that picture that she would have taken and been like. You know what it's the haircut it's too long. I don't. I don't understand why this was made into such a big deal. I think it was more so her disobeying. What they were they're all about you're gon na, do what we tell you guys to do and she went against that and they probably didn't like it. So i don't know if she freely left - or they just told her to leave but either way. I think she made the right decision for herself and she said she's going to be getting extensions, even when this is like the third episode. She probably just got her hair cut that short poor girl. She she did all that and then she just ended up going home before we get started. I want to talk to you about cassandra and her decision to not cut her hair, which was also a decision to leave this competition being a model means being able to adapt to a whole variety of situations. Cassandra was more interested in holding on to one inch of hair than in learning and adapting. How is that learning and adapting? Why does why? Does it matter so much to you, i don't like where this is going. So i'm saying to each and every one of you think long and think hard while you're here and either commit to wanting to be a top model or step forward right now, and you can go back to the house and pack your bags, why the hostility? What i don't understand, tyra said it herself. It was her decision to not cut her hair. What do you have to do with it? Ty was like she's trying to hold on to one inch of hair. Let me ask you the same thing: why do you care so much about one inch of hair? What does it matter that photo shoot? You think it's going to go up on a billboard? No, it's not! You literally shot it on a green screen. Happy like you're not going to use this in a book, it's not going on the comp card. It'S not going to help her get any jobs, that's not necessary. This is the stay in your place. Speech to all the girls. Look! What'S going to happen, if you guys speak out like cassandra, did she let the she let her dreams go all for an inch of hair? So you guys better, do what we want. She even says you can go back to the house and pack your bags. If you have a problem with anything that we ask of that, we're gon na ask of you. If you're gon na put up any resistance at all leave now they want models who are willing to do whatever, because for a reality, show like this to exist. The models have to be okay with everything they have to be open to, sharing things open to doing anything, otherwise they won't have a show like this. Is anyone want to go home? What kind of question is that i see you thinking over there lisa? Oh no, why does she call lisa out? Well then, we can proceed with judging why out of all the people she called out lisa lisa's over there just breathing she's, like i saw you blinking your eyes, do you want to go home? Do you ask? Did i hear something lisa was that was that a breath? Did you inhale lisa lisa? Do you want to go home tyra's not having a good day? Someone definitely parked in tyra's parking spot all right jayla. So you had a photo shoot where you were running on a treadmill. You guys didn't know what you were running away from, but you were actually running away from the fashion police witch fashion. Policemen, i'm not going to be commenting on these photos because i've already seen them and i did a reaction video to them, so that link will be in the description. If you want to watch it so we'll just we're just going to go through this one. Real quick: well, it's certainly a look. She has on the old velour track suits. You know the jlo tracks right right, everybody's saying, they're sold out. I like the close-up better than the long shot. You didn't really look like you were moving because you had on a track suit. You should have ran for real yeah all right, but also, i think they were wearing five inch heels, some of them, so that's to their defense. It would have been hard to do. A lot of the girls were actually doing amazing. I don't know how they did that, because my ankle, my ankles, both of them, would have been broken by the end of that you look completely static. Were you on the running machine? I was running so hard like. I was sweating afterwards. Take me out of here. We had a photo shoot, and here is your best shot, wow kim that doesn't get anything like you, yeah very feminine great shot straight on face, and it looks amazing already up next week, no comma, you have to learn your angles a little bit better, that face Twisted around that much gives a big swath of skin, so you have to realize where the photographer is and and and just cheat it okay, but she's on a treadmill. Okay, we have lisa. What did you say? You lost your neck. You see that lisa no yeah! It'S a turtleneck too, it doesn't matter, has nothing to do with the turtleneck if you didn't actually, because if i was, if i was wearing a top like this, you see how that changes everything her head was down like this. You would still see a little bit of neck versus if there was a turtleneck. It would be like this, so there would be a difference. Look see, neck, no neck, doesn't matter what angle it is. It was she's wearing a turtleneck, so she would have to do something kind of like this. I don't even who cares, but who cares? It doesn't matter it's a week picture personally, mr jay said that he felt that you were very bland and that the camera loves. You, but that you don't love the camera. I don't know. I think i love the camera nick. What kind of critique is you? Don'T love the camera, so she's saying that she did love the camera tyler's saying that she didn't love the camera? Who are we to believe it's a lover's quarrel here, so modern-day romeo, juliet situation, facially nick this looks fantastic. Your face looks beautiful, but i would have liked a little bit more intensity because right now, you're, like i'm pretty i'm running instead of you, know: okay yeah up next free, of course, bri you're on a on a treadmill, wow looks like you're standing still that's what I thought too, at the bus. Stop, hey girl, i'm coming you talking to me. They could have easily chosen a shot where there wasn't a lot of movement. That'S all i'm going to say for this one, you just look on top. It looks really uncomfortable. It looks like you're in pain. I think poise is the operative word here. That'S really what you need to work on so now it's time for the judges to deal with that music transition. I don't think they chose the best picture of her, but we can't see the other photos we're just gon na have to we'll just have to trust them. You guys. The girl that i do not call must immediately return to the house that you're staying in pack. Your belongings, poor girl's already crying one of you, wants this so much. I think both of them want something thousands of dollars to be a model, but she gets confused and discombobulated, and sometimes we want something so much that when we're asked to go and perform, we fall apart and the other person really wants it bad and says that They'Re confused that they're on the quest to finding out who they are and there's a need to make a disclaimer about her performance and all the disclaimer does is point to the negative things things that somebody judging you would have never liked you guys. Judging her, you guys would have just pointed it out. Anyways she's, like we wanted to point it out on our own kim. Don'T do it again, kim just make the mistakes, and hopefully we won't see all the ones that you think that we will and then you guys will point it out anyways. Don'T congratulations! She'S like she's like let us point it out for you. Please you're doing our job and we don't like that. It'S becoming america's next top model. Thanks sarah walk away queen, i love when they just go to the girls, say their goodbyes and just leave here's my opinion. I don't think it was just over a haircut. I think it's something deeper than that. This model voiced her opinion, she's kind of stood up for herself in a way and said: no, she didn't do what they wanted her to do and that could pose a problem for for them down the road they want to. Do something on the show we have models voicing their opinions, they're going to inspire other models to speak up. We don't really want that. We don't want people thinking that they have a choice in a lot of things, because then we can't do what we want to do for the show. We can't make it spicy, that's just my opinion um. So to me it wasn't just the haircut. It was something much much bigger than that. What do you guys think was it that big of a deal should she just have cut her hair, or do you think no, she should be able to say. No. Let me know in the comments what you think and i'll see you guys in the next video

Jessica Kobeissi: Do you think Cassandra being kicked out was just about a haircut, or something more?!

JB Loucks: Fun fact: After the show, Cassandra grew her hair back and is happily married to actor Stephen Amell, the guy who plays the main character in the show "Arrow". They have two children together. She also has a nice acting career going on for herself, too.

THE MODEL GENE: This episode brings up a lot of issues about some clients in the modeling industry. Prada is notorious for forcing models to cut their hair in order to do their show, often completely ruining their look and compromising their future earnings. I had to deal with this situation a few seasons ago, and there was a list of brands in Paris saying they would release their options on all models who were cutting their hair for Prada. Givenchy did the same thing this past Menswear season, requiring all models to get buzz cuts. As opposed to a campaign, there is no guarantee a model will ever work for a brand again after doing their show and Prada especially has a habit of booking models as an exclusive just for their debut season and never working with them again. To add another level of pressure, the industry has morphed into a place where a few casting directors are doing several brands. Ashley Brokaw is the casting director for Prada, Raf Simons, Louis Vuitton, Coach, etc. DM casting is doing Versace, Louis Vuitton Mens, Saint Laurent, Givenchy, DSquared, Moschino, Jacquemus, and more. There is always the risk of angering one person and losing all those clients at once.

Ellarah: I think the scariest part about this is boiling down to consent. Your hair is your hair and you should always have the right to say what is and isn't done to your body. When they kick her out of the competition for not "complying" with something against her consent, it tells the world that your body is not your own, that you are just an object. Ultimately this entire show is like that and it's really damaging.

mirlambda: Anyone looking for a little more context: Cassandra said in her application that she would do anything they wanted to change her look, including cutting her hair. Then the makeovers happen, where they decide to cut her long hair. Cassandra was BAWLING, because she needed her long hair for pageants. Tyra wanted her to have a Mia Farrow cut, but the stylists messed it up. Tyra was pissed, and insisted on cutting more off to give her the intended makeover style. When I was younger I was SO mad at Cassandra for not wanting to cut her hair! Now that I know more about how this all works, I think this was all set up. They love bringing pageant girls on the show and framing their stories like, "This girl is too self-confident, we're going to prove she cares more about pageants than becoming a model." And then they ruin her chances at succeeding in either. I think production saw the opportunity to create drama by bringing Cassandra on the show, cutting her hair short because they knew she needed it, and messed it up on purpose just so they could tell her to cut it again.

SoCalJellybean: Is it just me y’all, or does Tyra always seem like a one-note model when she pulls faces?! She’s trying to show the girls how much better SHE can do the pose, and all I’m thinking is, “girl, all the faces you make look the exact same!”

Anna Mrl: A model can't change things for every shoot she does, if one wants you to shave your head then the next person would you with natural long hair. You will never please everyone. Stop forcing people to do stuff.

M K: This was awful to Cassandra. They gave her an absolutely awful haircut and dyed her hair a terrible colour and then got mad when she was like “no to more cutting”. And then kept making fun of her and implying she was weak and dumb. What a terrible abusive thing to do to a young lady. I’m glad she stood her ground and left. And she completely found a life outside modelling that suited her better.

Linn J. Alexander: I hate that they negated the fact she already cut off like 14 inches of her hair and bleached it. Then making it seem like she was just mad about the 1 inch. No, she just doesn't want to give another inch after she already gave a mile. This show, in hindsight, was so much toxicity. Tyra was just working through trauma by bullying all these contestants, there was no real guidance.

xXValentineXx07: "She wouldn't take one inch off her hair" uh ma'am you are missing the part where she ALREADY cut like 9 inches off her hair. It's already a drastic change and now you're basically wanting to take off half of what she has left. I don't blame Cassandra for being upset and not wanting to go through with it and I HOPE she chose to leave on her own rather than being bullied out of the competition by production. Personally I'm of the opinion that Hair Grows and even a regrettable haircut decision is going to eventually be able to be fixed, but I also know that not everyone has hair that grows quickly and not everyone is of that same mindset. And for Cassandra, adding in the color change, I wouldn't be surprised if she was still trying to recognize herself in the mirror leading up to this photoshoot. It's one thing to decide on your own to cut your hair short and then be like "oh no" afterwards, it's another thing entirely for someone to just do it to you.

bre: "God gives us our first instincts, don't go against it" Powerful and I needed to hear that, especially the way she delivered that line.

Jalil 1814: They gave her that haircut to break her. I really believe that cuz I don't think that cut looked good on her AT ALL. I think because she got a good photo last week and panel didn't expect that from her and they thought she was too confident in herself (beauty pageant), they did this to break her. Now yes, as a model (top model i guess), you need to adapt and know that they want certain looks for you, and I think she had to be aware there was a chance they were gonna cut her hair when she came on the show, but that doesn't mean production don't have agendas as well. If Tyra loves short hair so much, why doesn't she ever wear it???

Ashley Hubbard: I remember this episode, back then I thought Cassandra was just being difficult because that's how they made it look. But now watching this as an adult this is just wrong. They criticized her because she didn't want to cut 1 in off of her hair after they already took like 9 inches off lol But they literally eliminated her for it. It really didn't matter. Plus you could already tell she was not comfortable with the haircut in the first place because she kept covering it up with that bandana on her head. I think they just did this on purpose for ratings. They knew she wasn't comfortable with her hair short so they probably said let's cut more off to really mess with her for the show. Just terrible.

Rock Bottom: She literally only has like 2 inches of hair left and they're acting like cutting off 1 inch isn't a big deal? Like its not just a trim at that point, it would have drastically changed her whole look

Kayla Barr: I would personally take it a step further and say it isn't just: If the models don't obey us, we can't do what we want with the show.. I personally think the models obeying them IS what they want to do with the show. These (judges, Jay and guest judges) are all people who are treated like royalty in their little pocket reality of modeling and fashion, but outside of that niche, not many people know or care who they are. I think Tyra wanted to make the show not as a way to uplift aspiring models, but with the intention of letting public access television viewers know that she is important and should be revered outside of that bubble too. Every episode seems to be the embarrassment Olympics where the winner is whoever was willing to grovel to them the most. And I want to be clear that I don't think the real modeling or fashion industry is like this, but I do think it's the driving force of the show. I was obsessed with the show as a kid and as an adult it seems really obvious that none of this is about modeling. But that's just me.

Skiwlz: I think every behavioral analyst, police detective, fbi agent, social worker, psychologist, therapist, etc. should have to watch a full season (I'm not calling them the dumb cycles) for training purposes. Even with all the editing on how and dramatic music cues, I've never seen a more perfect, more succinct method of just completely tearing people down and gaslighting them out of existence. Also, Cassandra had great bone structure. She looks great with short hair. Not sure about that Rainbow Brite Yarn Orange color...But the thing is it's growing out of her head not mine so it is her decision. There should never be discussion about what someone does and does not want to do with their body. Periodt.

Bridget Cooney: Tyra is like "being a model means you have to let yourself be used and abused by anyone with power over you, if you can't do that, you don't have what it takes to be a model."

Ellarah: It's not really a choice if it's coercion. We have to remember the difference between natural consequences and threats made by someone of authority in order to control an individual. The difference is important. If this were a choice, a natural consequence of her not cutting her hair would be that she would have a disadvantage to the other girls in the competition, leading to poor photoshoots that would ultimately lead to her not winning the competition. That would still allow her to make the choice and it would be at her discretion. However, we know that in this case, this is coercion because the result of her not cutting her hair was made by someone in power over her. "If you don't cut your hair, you have to leave. Your choice." Not really a choice because the result was decided by someone of authority with the intent for control and not to protect. That's the difference.

Gudst: When I watched this at 13 years old I thought Cassandra was such a drama queen, although at the same time I wouldn't have wanted my hair cut either xD But now I'm just glad she stood up for herself, you are absolutely right they just wanted to control her. Also I think she looked much better as a brunette with long hair, I dunno what they were smoking when they decided to cut her hair short and dye it ‍♀

Ellen Saunders: The episode before this Cassandra was bawling her eyes out because she loved her long hair. Tyra wanted her to cry more.

Jalil 1814: When you have to write a disclaimer, that means people be talking too much. It's an OPINION people. If you don't like it, don't watch the video!

ReidTheNintendoPainter: I swear, there needs to be a reboot of this series where the former contestants are the judges and Tyra, Jay and the rest of the judges are the contestants! Just so all of the judges can get a taste of their own medicine!

KitCat898: I can’t believe how much I loved this show. As a child I never saw how wrong these girls were being treated. As an adult, the whole show seems to be Tyra’s and the judges way of working through their trauma from an industry that was once unapologetically toxic — projected on to girls who’ve done nothing wrong.

K: I'm proud of how she handled this and standing up for herself. Wigs exist, extensions exist, just like makeup exists. Telling someone they have to cut an inch of hair off for each shoot, is like making them get their nose pierced instead of using fake jewelry.

林英敏: They ruined her hair and when she didn't allow them to touch her head again (because clearly they couldn't be trusted anymore) they have punished her. What a bunch of abusive clowns

S.G 234: I've worked for managers like Tyra and if I or other collegues ever stood up for ourselves and point out we were being treated unfairly they would always turn it back on us saying that we're acting unprofessionally and would say we're letting the business down bullies in management hate it when you're not just a nodding dog in their company and you're accused of being unprofessional and argumentative-like no we're standing up for ourselves

Daria Key: Fun fact: this girl Cassandra now is Stephen Amell's wife :) And she has gorgeous long hair.

J.E. Piper: The makeovers were a hot mess 9 times out of 10 on this show. Her first cut wasn’t too bad, but that blonde dye job . Tyra was pretty immature about it, too—all she had to say was “Cassandra did not want to cut her hair, so she left. We accept and respect her decision.” Not everyone is going to agree with you, Tyra. Everyone doesn’t have to go along with what you demand and they can change their mind at any time.

ShadowHeartsFlight07: It's absolutely a control thing. On every level. I dealt with this on an office level and quit over it. The judges have to make up excuses for why this photoshoot didn't go well for certain people, but they didn't tell them what they were doing either. Just to run in 5 inch heels which is dangerous. This show is an excuse for bullying as they have to keep topping themselves to make it "spicy." Don't watch and they will not have a show.

She was butthurt for no reason.

Kylee Cronin: I always go back and forth with Cassandra because it really was just one more inch and that inch would have taken her hair from the janky mess to a cute Mia Farrow cut. But I also have a theory that they messed up her Mia Farrow cut during the make over episode on purpose just to manufacture this little drama and reassert control over the girls… ☕️

Cassandra L.: THANK YOU. Its disgusting how this show and the industry itself tells ppl that if you DONT COMPLY with everything they demand, ur worthless. Where as in the "real world" any PROFESSIONAL WORKING PERSON IN ANY INDUSTRY HAS THEIR OWN PERSONAL BOUNDARIES AND STANDARDS AS A PROFESSIONAL. Saying "yes" to everything is NOT a working professional, in any field. You must have standards and boundaries for urself in order to be a good working professional. Like you always say. Tyra HAD every oppurtunity to CHANGE the disgusting practices done to models and start implementing her own standards and boundaries to the new models. But no, she just wanted to make a cheap reality tv show that in the end harmed more than helped anyone.

V G: I love how they make it seem like photographers will not work with you if you aren't okay with absolutely everything they want to do. If you aren't comfortable with cutting your hair, you don't have to like yes that will make you lose that particular job but it won't give you a bad name if you say it politely like she did

Kelsie McVeety: Rewatching ANTM, and reading Jay's book, honestly I think they're all in an abusive, toxic work environment. As someone who lived in one for two years, people often get warped and do things they normally wouldn't. I see all the judges getting progressively worse in their treatment of contestants.

Beautiful Sorcery: I think they should have had a more open discussion about why they actually wanted the hair cut. Maybe they decided they didn't like the cut they gave her and wanted to make it more flattering or achieve a different look? Just pulling a 'well you don't want to do this so get off my set' is ridiculous. Also, I'd like to know what actual difference the additional haircut would have made? I think they were just being petty because they couldn't make her do whatever. Also, her hair is part of her body so it'd be like them telling her they want her to have lip fillers and telling her to go home because she won't let them inject her

L Potter: This episode stayed in my memory since it aired, but I remembered it very differently. I thought Cassandra just decided to leave because she didn't want to cut her hair. Watching again... Wtf... The logic outcome would have been "I don't want to cut my hair", "OK, then go get your hair and makeup done, and get ready for the shoot"... Why did she have to even leave the set? And whyyyyyy that incredibly threatening speech from Tyra during panel? "If you don't agree with something, you are "free" to go now"... These are techniques used in cults, damnit.

Sean or whatever: Ugh these videos got me through my lesson planning time when I was in China, and I’m hoping they’ll do the same when I move to Vietnam tomorrow this series is my favorite, and I love getting your perspective both as an entertaining person and photographer

Le Batteur: Cutting off someone’s hair without their enthusiastic approval has been considered a punishment throughout history in many different cultures. In modern day it isn’t as significant on that level, but I still think cutting someone’s hair off against their will (or forcing them to grow it out against their will) is abusive. At the very least it qualifies as a form of cruel and unusual punishment.

Steph B: I remember watching this cycle- she was very distressed when they initially cut it. She was crying and really didn’t want them to do it. She came around eventually and let them do it. I think them trying to get a second cut was their way of seeing if she would do what they said because she put up such a fuss the first time. Really really unfair.

Simone Rognås: It's all about breaking her psyche, make her become an "empty canvas", a shapeless lump of clay for them to shape however they please. It's just breaking her down. No personality, no talk back.

iamsquishy: Jay is a sociopathic narcissist, and he did this simply to punish her for not "complying." It's petty to say the least, and he is a creep.

Jessica: What did Lisa do that she was called out like that, I’m so glad that Lisa talked about everything, these people did to the seasons she was in. This episode was really told a story, if any model who speaks out against Tyra, they were gone. Watching these episodes back, you can see all the problematic issues Tyra and her team have. It’s like those girls were suffering from Stockholm syndrome.

Jalil 1814: Hey Jessica. One of my favorite shoots on the show was the plant photoshoot and recycle shoot in cycle 9. I think those were episodes 3 and 5. Hopefully, you'll be able to do those. Thanks.

reneefk: I remember someone mentioning in comments once how they cut one of the models hair so bad, that it made her look terrible, and to check out her instagram now. She literally looked like a different person and looked a thousand times better after the show. I wish I could remember who it was, because it was crazy.

FentiFlop: Tyra: "Commit to wanting to be a top model." Also models from ANTM: *Stating how the competition made some of them hard to get into modeling agencies and exposing how they never got opportunities* You can listen to one of Winnie Harlow's interviews for proof.

Hair8Metal8Karen: I love that she stood up for herself. She did what she needed to do. Cassandra, if you see this, we love you

L Musima: ANTM bullying exposed. I was so disappointed with Jay Manuel the way he emotionally blackmailed the model with short blonde hair. Such liberty taking. They want her to accept a temporary or permanent loss of hair for a silly competition with no guarantee of winning. They’re not even paying her $1m

erinpilla: I remember watching this on TV. You gotta know the context of this whole moment from WAY WAY BACK and not just base on this one moment. I know a lot of pageant girls. Unfortunately they're like Samson. I also felt that much of Cassandra's makeover here was to spite her and not really improve her. If you saw the trajectory of Cassandra, she definitely knew they were playing her. She was right to leave.

Gabrielle Duplessis: I get if they want to have a new look for a particular shoot and not every person they may work for will be understanding. But after watching this channel, it was interesting learning that models do have agency and warning about what the shoot is. However, it makes no sense why they have to cut their hair or dye it. Extensions make sense or wigs because they can be removed later. But with a cut or dye, like Jessica says, you have to live with it. I am glad Cassandra said no because I believed they would cut it off to the point that they shave her head and that is wrong. I get there are more serious things in the world, but her body her choice. She shouldn’t have to live with a hairstyle she dis not even want. They were overreacting. Everyone here calls the crew (not the models) bullies and bullies don’t like people standing up for themselves and get defensive if someone does so I do agree that it was more about the haircut. If this show was bot filmed in a cheery, lighthearted way, it would make a great premise for a dystopia.

Maxx Nieves: This reminds me of bosses at jobs that will call you unprofessional for standing up to someone openly cursing you out calling you confrontational. Did she sign a consent form, yes, but there are limits, if you say you're cool cutting/coloring your hair with no context and then they say they're gonna cut and style you to look like you're balding with dry weave glue around the back, is that ok? That's also technically been consented to. No one goes in expecting them to cut off all the pageant girl's hair, it's unnecessary and unreasonable, they did it because they knew someone in her position would push back and they could make drama out of it. Reminds me of an old Drag Race episode that made me super uncomfortable, where they had contestants say openly, they were uncomfortable with their bodies and then they made one of the challenges a nude photo shoot and strong armed them all into it. Reality TV production is ruthless.

Michelle P: It's Cassandra's body and she has the right to decide what's done to it. How dare they try to manipulate her into thinking she doesn't have sovereign right over her own body. Who the hell do they think they are?

Kim E: First of all, I LOVE all your little comments in between everything, it's great! Now to the main point, I think Cassandra had every right to say "No". It's her body, her choice. We see they already cut off most of her hair and made it seem like the very next day said "we still don't like it so we are just gonna take it all off at this point". I honestly agree with you, that they didn't like it that a model said "No." because they want every model to just be submissive and roll over doing whatever they. I think I remember another model, during a black face shoot, telling the male models to back off and the judges didn't like that at all. Jay calling Trya at once to snitch, wow way to win people over dude. Then all the comments Trya made about hair cutting and not complying with authority (oh wait that's me reading between the lines)...

Tigre Malabarista: Cassandra had gorgeous DARK hair and Tyra did this to her. Then tried to cure enshirter, even though the previous photo shoot it turned out really nice. Cassandra even back then as very vocal post this episode about their attempt to cut it, pretty much saying she knew her chances were low winning and wanted to ensure she could quickly fix this disastrous haircut to book again. While Nicole was a worthy winner...this season you could tell Tyra clearly started having some favorites and deliberately sabotaged some girls’ chances to book post show.

Chan Win Sern: If I recall, there was a casting video where Cassandra did mention she would do anything for a transformation in Episode 2, prior before the hair makeover. For them to push her buttons for the extreme hair makeover, I'm sorry. Ain't that too much?

Andy: They did this girl SO wrong. She already had her hair shortened and it was messed up for them to expect her to shorten it even more!

Just Danny: I think this is the season where Tyra had her talk show running at the same time and would have the girls that were eliminated come on for interviews weekly. I can't remember Cassandra's but these poor girls went through alot. Tyra on her talk show was 10 times more ridiculous then she was on top model.

Charisse Linnell-Morton: Ridiculous and I think this was done for drama as this group was actually supportive of each other .Also the looks are not at all what any agency will like. I did this internship for an agency in Uni . They want models to be natural looking . Example if you have a dirty blonde dark ash color the might want to brighten in up but in general they would never ask or do ridiculous makeovers .Why ? Well ,it’s very easy to use wigs and faux hair to style. It’s a matter of enhancement of your hair. So they prefer natural and healthy. If you have perfect symmetry and amazing bone structure you probably would look great with a short cut but they don’t push that on you .Also if a client wants to do a drastic change like a shaved head or platinum and black pixie cut. An agency would decline that unless you were being selected for an entire campaign. As you are under a contract for an ongoing brand and would be in a lucrative contract for 6-12 months and you would probably be limited to what other jobs you could take during a contract. It’s just baffling as literally no agency does this . I also have to say that if you are petite or short you can work in Asia like Elise who has been the definition of a high fashion model. The only models that can get away with showing up to a runway show with multi colored hair are when the designer , or the brands creative director ask you too.

D B: I THINK what we need to be talking about is how Diana was the "fiercely real" model and they edited her to make her look just as thin as everyone else. Cassandra was given the makeover to shed the pageant queen persona she had in the beginning. The additional bit cut off was to give the specific haircut Tyra wanted. At the end of the day, it was a competition show and the girls took a lot of abuse. If you want something really shocking, look at Australia's Top Model and see how they busted out the scales constantly to weigh the girls. It was brutal.

Acisme: Complete, totalitarian "do as I say or else, I know what's best for you" type attitudes like the one exhibited in this episode also signal a lack of confidence to me. If cutting an inch off of her hair was REALLY what was going to make or break her chances on the show, they would have the confidence to let her keep her hair and then watch her fail as a result. As it is, they're insecure and feel the need to micromanage her in order to maintain their sense of power over her and the others-- they can't give a contestant the opportunity to prove Tyra wrong, they need to get her out of there and make an example out of the whole thing. Cowardly, petty BS. A lot of it probably was a move by production to keep the show running how they want it to, but the general attitude is one I've found in authoritarian parenting styles IRL, so I thought I'd call it out

Vanessa Stegall: Cassandra was right. Her hair was a part of her! I don’t blame Cassandra I love my long hair too and I cut it into a short bob worse mistake ever.

Liz Anna: I think she knew it was haircut or home. She wasn't willing to change herself completely, because let's remember they didn't like her smiley positive attitude either.

coogie: I'm old, so I watched every season of this when it was out, and was such a huge fan of this show AND Tyra. Now I watch and I am so disgusted by what we thought was OK. They exploited ppl for ratings and this is just as bad as any crime. This makes me so . I'm so happy Cassandra left. Tyra needs to be cancelled. And someone shave her head, while they're at it.

Michele Jackson: If cutting her hair had improved her look, maybe refusing to cut it more would have been silly. But the original cut did not suit her at all. Maybe it was the fact they took her dark hair and made it yellow? They screwed up originally as they tried to make her look less Beauty Queen (everyone on this show are really against beauty queen looks) and just made her look older and sallow. Glad she walked off.

Christina Our Wood Home: I have a feeling the other girl who got a haircut this episode was a subplot just to contrast with Cassandra.

magicalmissfitz: I just wanna say idk what’s different or if I’m just paying more attention now but the lighting, the clarity, the layout of the reaction feed vs the show display everything is super nice!! Like I never had a problem with how it looked before but something about this video just seems so clean can’t wait to actually watch the video now that I’ve commented on this

Sarah Koste: And then we have seen plenty of judging every Tyra tells the models they need to stick up for themselves... smdh

SoCalJellybean: Kim: “I REALLY need to bring it this shoot and do my best!” Kim during shoot:

Mia Benoit: My guess is that when she initially had her hair cut, she may have said that she'd never go shorter. They may have used that as ammo against her for future episodes.

Pamela Leanne Freeland: This is extremely toxic and dangerous- teaching young women to comply with absolutely whatever is demanded of them to “book the job”. It’s so infuriating. Did she not see the issue with this line of reasoning?!!!?!!

Anna Héjas: Ó, remember her! Poor girl, she cried so hard when they cut her beautiful hair :(( I totally understand her decision, she looked so much better with long hair.

Itsme_e: (update i have watched:and i am appalled and disgusted as some who is of african decent but aussie i know how important hair can be my hair takes so long 2 grow and is hared to maintain so when people say its just hair that infuriates me to make someone cut their hair for a shoot is unprofessional and is just plain rude like ik how it feels my auntie sat me down one aay and said come here i sat down and she copped alllll i mean allllll my hair of so to say this is dissapointing is a big understatement they wanted 2 break her:) i havent watched this yet but i wanted 2 say i already know i will love this vid i was going through some tough time and watching ur vid mad my smile laugh cringe get angry and everything in between so thankyou going 2 watch the vid now!!!

Kelsey 23: I feel like there is always at least 1 hair makeover every season that makes the model look worse. I have a hard time believing tyra and the show really thought some of these makeovers were a good idea or look good‍♀️‍♀️‍♀️ I'd be pissed if I were any of those models

Veronica Pomar: Cassandra actually cried like a baby when she lost all that hair and I understood that because I love having long hair.

Emma Sanduja: They gave half the girls that awful, shaggy pixie cut with the orange highlights. I don’t blame Cassandra for refusing the second haircut, just on the horrible styling alone. I’d look at all those other girls with their jacked-up dos and turn tail too.

Pandora Stölen: I used to get so annoyed with the girls who would cry over their makeovers. Now I feel so bad over what these young ladies had to go through and now my annoyance is something closer to anger and directed at the judges and producers of this show.

Sabine Bruhns: It is, like she said - already with cutting her hair that short and changing the colour too, that was quite an extreme make-over. I don't know, how she behaved during the make-over and spoke up against it or complained about it later. But they really are trying to break her personality. And it was all about her not accepting a decision. It had nothing to do with one inch of hair, but with obeyance.

S.G 234: Have you watched any of the Oliver Twixt interviews ? All the models have said it was about a reality TV show first and a modeling competition second. I always thought whenever Tyra smiled it never reaches her eyes and its creepy and whenever a model tries to say something back Tyra never likes it and usually shuts her down. I had loads of respect for Cycle 6 winner Danielle who refused to get the gap in her teeth fully closed even though she got ticked off from the judges for not fully closing it. Like no you have no right to permanently change someone's appearance.

Natalie: Idk I think the “what’s the big deal” with another inch argument goes both ways. Cassandra did have the right to say no and she did. The consequence of that was leaving. She had already made the choice to let them cut it in the first place (something she also could have said no to and would have had the same consequence but kept her the hair she loved so much). Not to mention the cut they gave her was bad and the shorter look would have looked better on her. What’s another inch if being in the competition is important to you? I’m not saying this show isn’t exploiting these girls because it absolutely is, I just think that not letting them give her a better haircut was the wrong choice on her end IF it was important for her to be there.

Desairee Storm Matherly: Jay: I don't have time for this Also Jay: Takes time away from the photoshoot to call Tyra

kathleenuclear: I loved seeing the drastic makeovers when I was younger watching this, but now it's all very cringe. I know they were trying to make sure these girls could handle everything, but some of the makeovers were just so extreme and unflattering. they're taking these young girls and turning their worlds upside down, they couldn't just give them highlights and a trim or a cute set of extensions...it was always such an extreme difference and they never cut the hair of the girls who wanted it. wigs are a thing for a reason!!

Zoe Vokes: Series 19, episode 10 reaction please. Tyra photographed them on a slippery, dangerous waterfall and said they made “art” together. Some models got easier places to pose than others - Laura had to pose under the waterfall, with water pouring on her face and couldn’t breathe.

Dizzy Dreams: This is so toxic. The message they are sending is: We can do whatever we want to you, or ELSE. Abusive, that's what that is.

wild view: She must not have freaked out enough about cutting her hair in the first place

Ever24: I’d loveeeee to see a reaction to season 9 when they did the recycle shoot and the quit happens. Somewhat dramatic scene

Bastion Cory: Girl, Bree was trying to get Cassandra out of the competition. She was being sneaky, haha.

Rachel Cat: Tyra phrased it as, she had to leave over an inch of hair. Versus, they asked her to leave over an inch of hair. If she's a good model, like they wanted, then wouldn't she be able to work the extra inch? I'm so curious as to what contracts they have them sign

Andrea Rochè: Its almost similar when Dani/Danielle who won Cycle 6 when it comes her to gap being “not marketable” and they told her to close it. Even though she did, they’re making it a big deal. Right now models are more versatile when it comes to their looks.

Vivien Lim: What really irks me about this situation is how, instead of equipping the models with the skills needed to deal with difficult clients (WITHOUT letting clients walk all over them), Tyra & co. are basically reinforcing the toxic culture in the industry which already considers models "lesser" than their clients' needs. Each individual instance might "just be a haircut" on its own, but imagine having to do that for every single photoshoot you book. What if one client wants you to lop off all your hair, then the next makes you put extensions in, the next asks for a buzz cut, and so on? It's just not feasible to accommodate every client's request, especially when they're permanent/semi-permanent! Tyra is basically teaching these young girls that they have to put up with any and all unreasonable BS if they want any chance at being successful. What the show really should be doing is teaching the girls, "Hey, this is what the industry is like, sometimes you'll have to make difficult choices, but losing one job is not the end of your career. Make the choice that YOU are comfortable with." But of course, that wouldn't make for good reality TV. I get that it's not so black and white in reality. I saw an insightful comment from another user about how a select few individuals have a monopoly on the high fashion scene. Sometimes there are powerful people you just can't piss off, as frustrating as it is; sometimes rookie models simply can't afford to turn down jobs. However, I do wish models were taught more often that they DO have a voice and they CAN change this industry.

Emily Messina: The sad thing about this is that being on ANTM disqualified her from future pageants.

J casey Jones: When you see something on a reality show get blown up out of all proportion and result in someone leaving, I always think that person had to leave for some personal reason and the show capitalized on it for drama.

KimaPamAndKeyshiaColeSLAWithoutRaisinsInTheSun: Mama did what she needed to do! It worked for the best she became an actress and been married to a successful actor for 10 years...Tyra had to break from the franchise altogether just to even have a life and a child... nearly 15 years later!

MJ Fuller: If Tyra wanted that Mia Farrow haircut so badly, she should have given it to herself

Al mjininna: If someone told Tyra to cut an inch off of her hair she would throw a b*tch fit and tear the place down. If anyone ever used that tone of voice to me and said "if you don't like it you can pack your bags" I would be out and gone. Nope.

Akia Sembly: What I don't understand about this situation is, Cassandra looked great with her new hair. It aged her a bit, because the blonde made her tan more noticeable than the brown did, but but she was much more distinct and fashiony, which is supposed to be the point. Tyra harping on the very functional, largely appealing, and still dramatic makeover not being good enough because it wasn't what she wanted makes it very obvious that she did not even want to pretend to have that girl's interest at heart.

Sarah Schumm: Ugh, and she's not going to just have to deal with it growing out, she's going to have serious roots! The blonde they gave her is not even nice! It's really brassy! With her natural color, they must have fried it to get it that light in one go! This poor girl is going to need a corrective color in a couple weeks just for it to look natural again! I stopped doing short hair because it was so much maintenance.

Virginia Brayton: YOUR opinion is MY opinion. If they want different colors or lengths of hair try a wig. I think they love to control and even bully the girls. It makes them feel big.

CariDMM: So...she got sent home for wanting bodily autonomy? "Do it or else?" Then they used to to threaten the other models. That's so manipulative. I have friends that model. They're allowed to keep their hair and their jobs. Ugh

Keely Quinn: I wonder what Jay would say if someone was trying to force him to change his hair

dhalia black: She looked great with short hair but if she doesn't like it and feels uncomfortable... Not one person should force another opinion on her. Just give her support and don't force anything else. Yes, hair will grow, but if you hate it, I get you. I have a wish to cut my hair short but I am scared of it and I wouldn't do it if someone forces me. Years ago I had long, long hair, told the hairdresser to cut it not more than a bit. She grabbed the scissors, took a bunch of hair and automaticaly cut it all the way to my ear. Horrible and I cried for hours.

Jakksiik: Jessss u should react to Asia’s Next Top Model too!! They had so much things that make u shake ur head lol.
