Dr. Quinn'S Report: The Dangers Of Hair Weave

When improperly installed, hair extensions can cause problems.

A lot of women spend lots of time and hundreds of dollars on their hair and even then there's a chance that something could go wrong tonight. In a 16 wAPT special report, we reveal the hidden dangers of hair weave it's dyed, tied or laid to the side, but is it natural? Some celebrities are coming clean and mitting. They bought it women from Hollywood. All the way to Jackson, Mississippi are adding weaves or extensions. A glam is the extra never had a woman. The beauty is total enhancement changed. My life is a lawyer and Latricia. A brown works in health care, both wear, weaves or extensions, but they haven't had the same results. It'S a chance to play a little bit. My own hair is a different color than my extensions, and so every six or eight months, if I feel like playing around, I can change color and then the damnit there, it's not damaging my own hair Brown says she had to cut most of her hair after One treatment my size was seeing it and my see was my hair. I had no, I had good hair like it was full and thick it was standing out. Some points was sure: it's my part was long and she's, not the only one in her family who's had weave woes. These are pictures of damage to her sister's hair from years of wearing extensions. Her hair is damaged like be romantic eyes. She to the point where she's embarrassed right now she can't a little bit so we're weaving her hair cuz. It'S so damaged really bad. Dr. Timothy Queen sent us these pictures of his patients, who have traction alopecia due to the stylist installing the hair extensions to tightly stylus. We talked to say the danger comes in with how the extensions are installed, the treatment of the hair and how they were moved. Some situations we have to send to a physician yeah, they have to seek medical attention. Sante Luis is a weaveologist and she owns celebrity hair designs. They specialize in bonding sew ins and infusions. It can take several hours to put in and cost you up to $ 500. The weaving techniques that we use are protective styles. We have products that will protect the hair from any invasive product. That'S just a mcpherson and he's part owner of the William Wallace salon. He specializes in bonded extensions that will run you from 400 to $ 1000 that'll. Have you in his chair for more than 4 hours, there's been a few cases where you see someone who's adumbrated in too tightly or they've had the extension put too closely to the scale, and that will cause like scalp irritation, and you know, hair loss determines traction. Alopecia and as I said earlier, it's a condition caused by the hair being pulled to tightly during the installation technique where this actual follicles are damaged and that person can't have long-term hair loss. The old saying you know you get what you pay for rain screw with extensions too. You know there are tons of stylists in town that will put them in for almost nothing, and you know you always run the risk of not knowing what what products they're using experts say. There'S nothing to worry about. If your stylist puts in and removes the extensions properly okay, so doctors say the hair loss may or may not be treatable contact your dermatologists for help yeah yeah, I told you I would love to have long extra hair like that, but I think I learned from Watching this is this is something that you should not take lightly right and it's like Justin, the stylist said you definitely get what you pay for, what exactly? What sentence that brings us to our non-scientific instapoll. We asked: has your hair been damaged by weaves or extensions and so far wow that switched up from six o'clock yeah. Most of you say yes, at 53 %. Well, join the conversation at six. Oh one: nine eight zero four four one, six hit one for yes and two for no, and you can also vote on our wAPT news. App

Ilse Lynn Blaauw: people seem to forget that when you wear wigs and weaves you have to take care of your natural hair FIRST smh

ComiCat: I remember walking into an Asian hair store with my mom and sister once and there was a wig there that I loved so much. My hair at the time didn't even reach my shoulders and it was way too damaged(on the ends) to straighten. So instead of saving enough money to buy the wig, I decided to try growing my hair long and healthy. The other kids and some of my relatives always liked to talk about my hair at the time because protecting it wasn't so pretty, plus I'm naturally curly. Now it's been a few years and my hair is very full, very healthy, and even longer than the wig I wanted so bad!! The wig would've stopped at my collar bones but now my real hair stops at about mid-back when straightened and below my shoulders when freshly washed and conditioned. It was the best thing I could ever do to my hair and now I'm hair goals to the relatives and others who used to talk about me!!

Annabel Uwaemenyi: A weaveologist?! I never realized such a profession existed.

diva70smusic: It just saddens me that we are raising generations of black women who values how their hair looks than what's going on inside their heads. No more mother daughter bonding moments while getting a good head scratching. No more learning how to do our own hair and being proud of it. Putting perms and weaves in little girls heads when they are way too young. Our mothers took pride in doing our hair. I remember it was a rite of passage to get a perm. We had until we were in high school to get one. I waited until well after college because of the cost. We are spending inordinate amount of money getting hair and nails done. It took me a long time to understand the correlation between emphasis on looks and the low self esteem in my students when I taught school. Now after 35 years, I just get sadder and sadder. We criticize and hate on each because of our hair choices. We allow others who don't care about us to dictate our hair choices. We spend waayyy too much money on getting our hair done-one day short and blonde, next day long and black. Next day curly and red. It not just the hair but nails, fashion, and tattoos. Can we at least save some money for houses, careers, education, travel and retirement? We can still be fabulous but within our means and limits. Good God black women are more beautiful than we know of ourselves.

kamille seven: You would not believe the money you save walking away from it all. Between going to the beauty shops ( perms) or going to get my hair braided ( when I first went natural). I have saved sooooooooo much money. It forced me to learn how to take care of my hair. My hair is so much healthier. My guy and my Dad love it. My Mom encouraged me. My sisters we are so beautiful on our own. It's hard to walk away at first. Now I don't even think about it.

chasing starlight: It's not a protective style if you're losing hair.

Step T: Damage comes from not taking care of your hair while wearing weaves.

Notice me Michelle Senpai: I've just been saying this earlier. Just go natural, and fuck society! If they won't hire you because you don't have your hair straightened, then maybe you don't want to work for that company? If a guy won't date you because he says that straight hair is more beautiful, or makes you feel unpretty, then do you really want to be with someone so shallow and emotionally abusive? (my ex made me cry, picking fun at my hair until I finally snapped at him) Curly hair is so beautiful, we've been socially conditioned to be insecure about it, or socially conditioned to hide it to appease to very intolerant people who make a big deal out of the way hair grows out of someone's scalp. Also! If you want straight hair, you can always flat iron it. If you're afraid of heat damage, and the risk of ruining your curls with an iron, then you can just throw on a wig, without ever damaging your curls with heat.

Hello Hart: Hundreds? Try thousands.... I wore weaves since HS then one day I realized how much it's damaging my hair. Weaves consist of friction, glue, tightness and all sorts of shit. "Protective styles" aren't really protective unless you consistently take care of your hair underneath.... I have done tons of research on how to care for my afro hair since we really aren't educated. It took me awhile to learn my hair personally but I finally got it right. This is the healthiest my 4c hair has been and its so beautiful!! The problem is, we are uneducated about out hair. That's why people assume black people can't have "good hair." Any type of hair can be good when it's well taken care of. I advise all women of color to learn their hair- the texture, the porosity, if it needs protein or moisturizer- all kinds of research.. BE PATIENT it took me 7 months to get it right... I always thought my hair was nappy and ugly until I took care of it and all of the sudden I have gorgeous tight coily curls! EDIT- AVOID SALONS.

0121: feeling blessed to have natural hair .

Tonni Cee: my stylist convinced me to try a weave. I had to take it out 3 weeks later. I listened to my body. By that I mean I had migraines and I couldn't get to my scalp properly. I was afraid of what may be happening. Thankfully no damage but my own hair smelled so bad. It took about 4 days of cleaning and deep conditioning to get rid of the smell. Never again and I told my stylist this too.

Nana Yaa: $500 dollars? Damn, I better see my future husband the moment I step out of the saloon. xD

Cindy Do: I've only worn a weave twice in my life and I'm 38 years old. I've been sporting my natural 4b hair after ditching relaxers. I'd rather put that money into retirement than to waste it on weaves or treatment for baldness.

***BLESSEDTOBEJUDAH***: I'm a black woman and I hate weaves. I'm natural and loving. Don't worry about no perms or weaves or raining on my hair no more. Bye weaves and perms ain't going to miss you.

MzNoemi: I stopped getting my hair dyed four years ago, and let my hair go gray. I started noticing my hair turn gray, with a thick streak of white in the front since I was about 16. Now that I am almost 49, it is not as thick. It is long. If I come to that point, and it is necessary, I will cut it. There are many women who feel confident and sexy getting a weave, but there are just as many women who feel like that are going natural, just going practically bald or completely bald.

Hunny Doo: Nothing wrong with wearing weave, but for the love of God, take a break every now and then! This is ridiculous

Janice Haywood: My hair start growing after I got rid of my weave. I wear locs and at a age where most women are losing their hair, my hair is growing at an alarming rate.

cataderian: I can't imagine going weeks or months without shampooing my hair right down to the scalp. It must get really nasty, itchy and smelly under there. Build up of dandruff, bacterial and fungus infections? Disgusting!

L Williams: These people are so infatuated with fake hair. If it is doing so much damage, then STOP the MADNESS!!!

KaiEliLove: It really does depends on who and how you do your hair. I do my own and my hair grows from wearing weaves. Different strokes for different folks.

Kiiree Reece: its called gross neglect and stupidity. when I had a perm I grew my hair past my shoulders. never had my edges come out either. these women u see just get any kind of weave and then leave it in for months neglecting their natural hair!

Emaan Afridi: I think that women need to embrace their natural hair, beauty and race!

Jamericanwifey: As soon as you feel the "stylist" braiding the hair too tight, RUN!!!!!..... I see many black women in the next 5 years going to Trichologists for treatment but it will be too late .

Dancing Delilah: Never worn weave, glue ins, extentions. Have worn wigs but only because I lost my hair to chemo. It grew back tho. But women who have been wearing sew in weaves will often have an obvious receeding hairline. Often you'll see a lady with beautiful hair down to the middle of her back but her forehead is HUGE because her natural hairline is gone... damaged from constant weaves being installed. Sometimes it's permanent & will never grow back. I'd think wigs, lace front wigs are a far better choice than weaves. At least wigs won't tear out your natural edges.

Kennedi. Diy: I wore a sew-in once, I’ve never lost so much hair in my life

D SW: All weaves are not created equal. Be good to your weave, and your weave will be good to you. Hair enhancement styles should not be a substitute for taking care of the natural hair and scalp. Anything woven too tightly is going to pull on the follicles causing issues, and the repeated use of glues, chemicals, and heat application is a sure way to guaranteed damage.

Natesha Laree: "Weaveologist" I've officially heard it all!

Leelee: the weaves I been wearing for years barely damaged my hair like that , actually makes it grow

Lily Jordan: Best advice: learn how to do it yourself. You won't braid you own hair too tight.

Goddess Love: Team natural, and loving all of me!!!

Rose: I hate when people call it “hair weave” What other type of weave is there? It’s like people calling shoes “feet shoes.” And this is honestly an easy fix. Stop sitting around saying nothing when the stylists is braiding your hair too tight, tell them to lighten up. If they’re still braiding it too tight after you say something, leave. I’m not about to wake up with bald patches in my head because I didn’t want to upset anyone, or didn’t want people to think I’m tender headed.

Blkeclipse L: I'm so tired of people using the term "Protective style" . It makes absolutely no sense. What exactly are you protecting ? Your scalp from oxygen and the sun ? I fail to see how gluing, sewing and/or tethering on chemically treated hair or synthetic hair is beneficial in any way shape or form. I have 4c grade hair - why is it longer than every weave woman I've come across when I've only been growing it out for 3 years ? I've never needed a "protective style". There are literally hundreds of women online who have attested to the dangers of weave. The woman in this video has acknowledged that she's going bald and has a bald relative - yet she is STILL weaving it up in this video. You guys are worse than drug addicts who try to justify substance abuse - at least they don't claim its beneficial

Betty Thomas: not everybody can do hair weave. you have to be careful who you let touch your hair. for one, the braids could be braided to right around the edges....which can definitely pull your hair out. It could be a number of things. I had sew ins and it never took my hair out. people just have to be careful of who they let do they're hair. even when it comes down to their natural hair.

JasmineLange: Clip ins are the safest and most natural looking. You keep your hair and the extensions clean and styled and take the extensions out every single night. I wish more black women would start using those instead of sewn in weave. Those braids are too tight. I'm a hairstylist just my opinion. But you do have to have some length for it to work and that starts with taking care of your natural hair and not trying to cover it up and neglect it like these horror stories

Sora: I always do my weave once a year so I don't risk any damage plus I trust my hairdresser (she tightens a bit but not too much) plus I've never lost a lot of my hair like only a ball of 1cm that's all.

Arainea CuteBrownNurse: Years ago I wore weave for years. My hair was long yet thin and lifeless. It looks beautiful but I don’t miss it at all. Love my pixie.

steven reid: It's madness ... Why would u forsake and damage your own hair like that!

Roxelle: the question is why do black women feel the need to wear weave? like, is ur real hair not enough? and i say black women because they are the ones who wear the most weave and ALL the damages happens to them. then what happens nxt? white women and Latinas all make fun of you. like come on people, this fake hair shit needs to stop and quit saying that braids and these other unnatural stuff are a part of our "culture". And stop calling them "most natural looking" and "protective styles" cause our hairs are kinky, curly and coily NOT wavy or straight! and it does MORE harm than good. i'm not trying to be mean or anything but i'm Tired of my black women being labeled as ratchet, ghetto and other stereotyped names just because they can't embrace their real hair. most of you need to emancipate yourselves from mental slavery and BUILD your self-esteems. cause seeing these kind of damages and people still choose to wear them shows that it goes way beyond trendy.

FallnAngel07: Her sister has so many more choices than wearing weaves...like seeing a dermatologist who can help her and going natural.

To Us: WeaveOlogist!!? She made that up. $400-$1000 and sit for 3+ hours?!?! Crazy!! You can get a good Lasting WIG for under $200.00 that will last and give your hair, head AND edges a break whenever you need one!

jacqueline ndongo: I hate any artificial stuff on my hair. Thank God my hair is natural and no foreign body on my hair

Stacy Williams: My stylists I go to know the caution of what damages can happen. They know not to pull too tight on the scalp because that can cause breakage or can damage hair follicles. The only time I’m aware of this is when I go to the Africans to get my box braids done. Seeing this news footage is definitely a point on why I’m cautious on who I make as my hair stylist.

MRS. W.O.: We spend more on weaves than we do on educating ourselves on how to care for and manage our natural hair. Black women, we are getting pay day loans for weaves, that's a problem.

Dawn RoseWood: They are NOT putting in weave in right. Plus, if it was already getting bad... why didn't they stop. Anyway, if you want to put in weave, do not use sew ins ,in my opinion, use crochet braids. Also, make sure that the stylist doesn't braid it too tight, don't be afraid to tell them.

Octavia Eddings: If done properly and taking care of your real hair while having the install and taken out properly you would still have hair. In fact, for hair can grow. Obviously these women needed to wear wigs or need to do their research before wearing weaves.

Deborah Leow: I have found in past years that many black hair dressers seem to pull hair too tightly...I always thought something was wrong with doing that...I stopped going to hair dressers years ago, and when I did...it was infrequent. I take care of my own hair and it works well for me, I save myself from all those hair woes. I'm not sure why most black women believe they can't take care of their own hair?... because, it is quite do-able.

Claudia Castrillon: Girls!!! just go natural!!!! let your hair breath!

Mommie 1: Hair extensions can either help your hair or damage it. it’s very important to take good care of your hair and install the extensions properly and most importantly be careful who you trust with your hair.

icilmaa: I can think of better ways to spend my money thank you. These days I'm seeing school children with damaged edges, it's not good. I've never worn a weave and never will.

Cynthia Chanel: You can do whatever you want with your hair .but let nothing be too tight. That is all

Vanessa Thomas: Someone needs to send a copy of this video to YouTuber, Tommy Sotomayer, who claims ONLY Black women wear weaves and that we (Black women) have "self-hate" because we just want the European version of beautiful hair. HAIR is beautiful in ALL cultures.

ReerBaadia: anything that includes glue is dangerous however way u cut it.

adoRebelstyle: People with natural hair also do not take care of their hair. My hairstylist who trims my natural hair has told me horror stories from both ends of the spectrum.

TweetyMillz Chill: this is why i do my own damn hair. weather it a weave, wigs, braids. i do it all myself. yall not getting my money to mess up my hair and it never comes out the way you picture it because the person is picturing something different

Tee H: Lynn, I agree. I have been wearing weave for more than 10 years. I go for a re-install every 2 months and I care for my natural hair. My natural hair goes down to the middle of my back - but it is not thick enough for the styles I want. I have my stylist keep my top and edges out so they will not break off. I have never had a problem. It's all in how you maintain your hair - and going to a good stylist on a regular basis - that's the key.

JAchica11: I install my weaves myself. Plus I have never used human hair, so my styles always look good and are affordable.

FoxyBSugar: Installed back to back for 3 years my hair was thinning thought i didnt have edges so i stopped for years because i had horrible pain in my scalp could take it anymore so i stopped then found out i have edges lol i still do my extensions but rarely now i do the installation myself because i treat my hair with respect and care

First and Last name: I believe in taking vitamins to get your hair to grow. And if you going to wear weaves make sure you can still touch your own hair. I have long naturally curly hair. The only extensions I've ever worn was beaded extensions/fusions. Used mostly by white women. If you don't keep them in long they don't hurt the hair.

Imelda Mayer-Taylor: No desire for weaves etc . In cases of medical treatments, understandable. No judgement of others . My natural hair is part of me.

Maybelin's World: I have natural long hair, but I take care of my hair. You can grow your own hair might take longer, but it's not impossible to do so. Damage hair will take longer to fix then just dealing with your own hair. Let's not be lazy. You want that long hair start with caring about your natural hair it's not that hard.

A c: If her sister had all this damage from wearing weave so many years, I don't know why she would get one. It's almost like a forewarning of what's to happen to her. Siblings usually have similar hair texture and can handle the same. Mean or my sister can handle braids

diplovely72: My hair started growing after I started doing it myself again. I’m in Miami and a lot of the stylists are young and unskilled or old bald and jealous under their ugly church lady wig

Rewired Mind Mental Health: The side effects of hair weave are very minimal compared to those of chemically processed hair.

COME WATCH ME: Most, damage from wearing hair weave comes from people who are so desperate to get them, for "nothing" or "cheap." Professional installation is honestly what one should get when considering hair weave, in order NOT to have their hair fall out or develop traction alopecia. Going, bald for a woman CAN NEVER feel good...even men feel this way too. #GoToAProfessional #KeepYourNaturalHair #ItShouldBeGrowingUnderWeave

Esha Renee: I cut my hair back in 2013, let it grow back, went natural for 2 years, put a perm the beginning of last summer, bern wearing weave ponytails and just wore a wig. I just washed my hair and it's inches past my shoulders. Nobody touches my hair but me, now every blue moon I may get my hair done but opt out because I have really good hair and nobody knows how to do it right.

The girl 53: Wtf is a "weave-ologist"?

Amanda Jackson: People damage their own hair and scalp. Weave is innocent and has no action! Most people that wear hair weave are psychologically believing that the weave is their own and don't maintenance and care for their own natural hair and scalp. If you constantly wearing weave and can't go without it then you are mentally addicted to it and need serious rehab. I met a woman at a beauty salon back in the 90s and she stated that her husband of many years had never seen her natural hair/head and while confessing to this she had a beautiful style she was wearing and and when it was time for the beautician to do her hair this woman head/scalp was seriously damaged. She stated that she would always allow the beautician to do different styles so her husband really didn't think twice. She explained that he just thought....... of it as my wife loved to get her hair done.

Loretta Ojo: hair weave is not dangerous if anything goes wrong it is the fault of the hairdresser

michmt: I wouldn't have the patience to sit in a hairdressers chair for that length of time. Some womens weaves do look good though I don't agree with putting them in children's hair which I have seen some people doing now.

Mu'min Ibn Luqman Asadullah: Sister said a few yrs ago "I "HAD" good hair"

Mareshah anne: I said bye to wings and weaves and smartened up....Thank the most high I still have all my own hair and edges..... I've been loc'd and loving it for almost a year and I have a 8yrs old daughter who is also loc and loving her natural hair

SUZIE POOZIE: Lol @ it all. I'm glad my husband appreciates my natural hair. I remember videos on YouTube from a few years ago teaching how to install weaves. Now there are videos on YouTube teaching us how to shade in edges. Bwahaha. Love yourself... That is all.

Roxy Johnson: This is why I hate weave and rather wash my hair, comp my hair or braid my hair that it .

Emeleo: A weaveologist? What the fuck? looooool

Jannette Phillips: THEY DON'T CARE WEAVE WILL STILL BE IN WOMEN'S HEAD❤✌

Robin D. Phillips: I just say NO to wigs and weaves!

Temka Williams: She says it's beauty because she wears a weave.... Honey, beauty is being who YOU are inside and NOT the outside of a person....

tsugirl281: This can happen to anybody because if you tender headed you never really know the braids are too tight until they hurting your head and in already. I personally going to continue to wear braids and weave because I like how it looks and hair health has really nothing to do with it.

Dyamanti Zaal: Nothing bad about wearing weaves or extensions..as long as you are taking care of your own hair at the same time. And as long as you acknowledge your own hair.

fonjadidi: CASTER OIL will nourish you hair like nothing else out there!!

sha lee'o: weave does not damage your hair it's the heat that they put on their left out hair as well as glue left on your edges. you need to wash your hair often, oil it and put it up while it's moist.

shocked not shook: People seem to think the weave is the problem.. well it's not. It's how you take care of your natural hair and how it is applied that does the damage.

GodspeedForever: Make-up, BBLs, weave, the "I dont need no man" mindset.. everything the enemy brought us destroys us, everything!

Browning hall: I feel that when the natural hair is plate its too tight. I went to a salon and told the lady its to tight and she didnt give two hoots and continued and when i took it out i lost a little paych of hair. So learnt to do it myself and after 10yrs i still have a full head of hair and now my daughters have learnt it and do my hair as i trust no one as the salons ive gone to plate to tight and dont care.

Pattyzulemalosangeles Anastasia: I’ve had a lot of weaves n my hair looks healthier every time

BOYABEANNN: Do your research on hairstylist & TAKE CARE OF YOUR NATURAL HAIR

Chinese China: You just have to take care of your hair that's the trick to it ..know your own hair too..what it can and cant take...a lot of people are getting into the hair business and don't really have knowledge on how to take care of hair.. and it depends on your hair I don't recommend leaving a sew-in in your hair for 3 to 4 months I leave my weave in for one or maybe one and a half close to two months when I do my hair I leave a lot of things out like I braid my natural hair I don't add weave to my braids and I do not wear the weave caps I just braids and sew...that breaths better and if wet you can blow dry it dry...that glue took my hair out out...

♎️Renee♐️: Im natural for 4 years now i do my own hair. And still have a head full of hair...i do braids... sew ins....quick weaves etc....

Alecia Lloyed: I am the hair weave queen. I spend $500. On my hair alone. I have never had this problem.

Kim Oliviaez: Wear hair clip ins ! Very easy to remove! Daily

Tanya keys: Thank God I have a beautiful hair and I’m not afraid to let my hair out. Confidently & beautifully created by my creator Christ Jesus.

Gregory Chandler: Stop confusing hair weave (terrible) with hair extensions (often okay).  They are two different products.

Rolinda Lewis: Even though there is hidden danger when wearing weaves so many women still continue to wear them anyway which I find very sad and the expensive that comes with weaves.

jam doughnuts: Never bond your hair to your scalp NEVER

Twyla Moses: Heat, Bonding Glue, relaxers, and tight ass braids are the black womans enemy.

Empty Nester: I wish I would give a hair stylist $500 to do my hair. What has this world come to? To capitalistic for me.

boomerang905: I have a beauty culture background. My generation only whispered about weaves because no one really knew much about them in the general population. Seriously though l was still on the business when they became popular and l would never, ever have applied them to anyone. I've never worn wigs or weaves but a wig is harmless as long as no glue is involved. If l had to wear a wig fine. It feels so good though to stay in your own skin.

Eva Wambani: If you take good care of your natural hair and don't leave the weave on too long I believe there shouldn't be any damages. And give your hair a break ladies... Look after your scalp and your hair will be fine.

Ro Ro: Black women need to know how to take care of their hair underneath a weave. They also need to stop braiding their hair way too tight. I have have my hair in for a month with "lose" braids. Then tight braids that pull on my edges.

Tracy Vic Wilson: Stop letting your friends do hair and get with someone professional!!!
