Jane Davenport

This is part two in my washi tape series of videos in the first one i showed you, the entire collection and a little secret that exists in the bright eye set and how they coordinate with some of my stencil sets that i've created over the years and In this video, i want to show you the godiva tresses set and the little secret that goes along with it. I created this video as a live stream into my jane davenport mix, media facebook group and i'm editing it together. So that's just a little bit shorter for you um, i'm using my layer cake, a paint which is fabulous for stenciling. Well, that's what i think anyway and i'm using one of my blending sponges. So i've got four different blending, sponges, they're, all different densities and different shapes, so you will have a favorite from them for your stenciling or stamping whatever it is that you want to do just pouncing that through one of my jane faces stencils these are stencils. I created a few years ago and i love using all of my art supplies that i've created from when i started um. Just because something isn't brand new anymore doesn't mean, i don't use it. I love incorporating everything that i've created. It'S all eternal right, so i'm just uh starting to work on that stencil. The beautiful thing about stencils - and this stencil in particular, is very, very open to interpretation. I haven't got details in the eyes so that i can make the eyes look wherever i want to um. It has got very little nose, detail very little lip detail, so you can make any kind of facial variety that you like i'm using a color from the lay cake paint set, which is called ghetto. It'S a beautiful soft lilac and i'm using one of the brushes that comes with the layer cake set, which has got a very lovely fine point. It'S a very small brush. I tend to work a little bit more slowly with this brush or with small brushes in general, which is quite relaxing and uh. If it depends what mood you're in as to how you want to paint what brush you should use and i'm now adding some beautiful gold giant hoop earrings uh, i just i wanted that contrast of the sparkle on top of this matte background, so i've created the Matte background and that sparkle, with the same thing, it's fairy dust pigments i've made my own sparkly gold pen with those and the backgrounds actually mixing the fairy dust pigment with um, gesso and matte medium on that page. It was part of a demonstration again in one of my live streams, and it's just when you add the sparkle to a matte acrylic. The sparkle goes, but the color stays and it's actually a lovely effect as well. So i've and that's, of course, all dry. And when i work on the earrings or work on a different part of the artwork just gives what i've already painted a minute to dry. So i like to work, i wouldn't call it a circular fashion but work on different areas of the artwork at different times. So that i'm giving things a chance to dry, also i'm giving my eyes a chance to refresh and look away from what it is that i'm working on work on something else come back to a detail and then uh. It just keeps everything more interesting for me. So i've put in just a few little details here and i thought well. I may as well use my beautiful washi tape for these eyes, so this is from the bright eyes set just drawing off the page there, a little really putting washi down the paper should be completely dry popping that down, and i love the little torn edges. You could make things super neat and cut with scissors like little stickers, but i love the torn edges, so i'm just ripping them off placing them down the beautiful thing about washi tape is it's repositionable, so i can pop this down. Move things around change things up. As i see fit and adding a little bit of lipstick a bit of color into the earrings to help them stand out a little and now, let's put on this new godiva tresses tape. And let me explain or show you why i have called it that the two tapes has two different designs both have different. Well, it can be an abstract, black and white uh, almost animal print looking for this one, but you can also use it as hair. That was my crazy idea. My intention and i actually started doing this using the washi tape for hair um in artwork that i used on my palette hotel. If you have one of those, it was a black and white tape in the background, and that's where i first started doing this and then the idea sort of took hold in my mind and well now i've created this hair tape because so many people tell me That they have trouble drawing hair and flowing lines, and i thought well, how can i be there to help you when you're doing that - and this was one of my solutions for that, so all i'm doing is placing it down and because washi tape, like i said Before so easy to tear, i can over place it, so i can put it you know more down or overlap it, and then i can just finger. Tear it off and the beautiful thing about this design is uh. When, as you place the pieces down, they can be married up they because there's such organic flowing lines, they can look like they belong together and you'll, see that, as as we continue, it might sound a bit strange for me to say that at this juncture, but Trust me, and because this is a fairly straightforward idea and i think you'll get the gist of that i'm going to let the camera speed up. As i place down the various strips of the godiva washi tape, i'm trying to sort of think about what direction the hair might be flowing in and just again just tearing it off with my fingers. If you did want to watch the real-time video it's in my facebook group and uh, you can watch it in there and all its glory and me chatting away about everything i just don't have to cover the whole piece with the washi tape. I can leave some blank areas, and now i'm going to use my ltq pen, which is just a very fast drying amazing, ink formula or license to quill, is the full name and it will even right on top of the washi tape. So i'm just connecting some of those lines. You don't have to do this. This is just what i felt like doing in the moment and if you've got any repetition of the lines in there that you want to mess up a little bit, you can do that or you can make more repetition, always with these creative decisions. Each thing has its own weight carries its own power and one of the major reasons that i love coming up with creative tools like stencils and stamps, and these new washi tapes that aren't just a thing on its own. Like it, i mean you can use them like that, but they're really a stepping stone, they're, really a tool for you to use to bring your own interpretation to and the reason i love. These is because they get that creative um creativity that creative loop started faster for you. I i feel it even within my own self, i'm very comfortable drawing hair and flowing faces of flying faces, flowing, hair and faces. I love doing that, but even for me um using my own stencils, i find very um invigorating. It helps me audition. It helps me feel more experimental and freer as i'm crankers, because i'm creating a little bit quicker um and maybe you would say i haven't put as much time into things. So it allows me to really let my experimental nature, my creativity off the chain and just go for it on the page and isn't that what an art journal is all about, and actually i can only speak for myself. That is what my art journals for me. Are all about uh they're, just a space for me to have some creative color fun so that i i just i get those creative urges. I don't want to say out of my system but uh, because that's not really this sort of um inspiring my whole system. My whole body system and when you're enjoying yourself like that in that freedom, you love it. You do more art, because it makes you happy and doing more art is what makes you not so much just better at it more comfortable with your own style. So it not only helps your style develop, but helps you fall in love with that style and realize what it is that you love about your own work and what you want to do more of so. That is why i create these tools and why i'm thinking of them all the time and why i love using them myself and because these are kind of quirky, i'm gon na totally say that and very you know davenpish.
