Hey guys and welcome back to our Channel today we're going to be talking about winter hair care. How do you take care of your hair during the winter? If you don't have a winter hair care regimen, I would highly suggest getting one, because caring for our hair during the winter months is very different than caring for our hair. During the summer months, everything comes into play during the winter. The temperature, the climate where you are in the US or in the world, the humidity outside all of this, determines how much moisture you use. If you should use more protein, how much heat you should or should not put on your hair. All of this comes into play when dealing with winter hair care, so the first step to maintaining your hair and keeping it healthy eat during the winter is washing less and co. Washing more so. I know this sounds really weird, but when you wash your hair with shampoo, you are cleansing the hair stripping it up all the oil than the build-up that have accumulated over the week or two or however long you go without washing your hair. So I like to call wash my hair, because it kind of leaves more moisture and more nutrients in it and with the weather being so cold outside my hair tends to get drier a lot quicker, so Co washing my hair more often than washing. It really helps my hair stay moisturize and really keeps it from getting dry, especially when I'm like going out running errands or going to class, and things like that, if co-wash simply just means washing your hair with a conditioner instead of a shampoo, there are also co-wash Products that you can actually buy instead of just washing your hair with my favorite co-wash, is eating Bodyworks coconut shea co-wash. I really love eating body works. They have really good natural products with no sulfates and no pair of pins. They work really good for my hair and I can actually feel it semi lathering and I feel like it's still cleaning my hair at the same time. So you can co wash it with the actual co wash or you can use your favorite condition. Go another important thing just for hair care in general, but especially during the winter time deep conditioned every single week. I cannot stress how important that is. You should be deep conditioning every week anyway, but especially during the winter months, because, with it being so cold outside definitely depending on which climate that you're in or what part of the state or the world you are, but especially dry, cold weather can definitely dry. Your hair out and you want to be putting as much moisture into your hair as possible. I like to stay away from protein deep conditioners during the winter time, just because I feel like I don't need them. Um, like I've said in previous videos. Your hair will talk to you. Your hair will tell you what it needs what it wants if it's dry, it's gon na screen, moisture, okay and if it has too much moisture, it's gon na be soft and limp and really easy to break, and then you'll know that you need a protein. But I find that during the winter months my hair is a lot drier than usual. So I like to do condition every single week and I use more moisturizing deep conditioners than protein deep conditioners in the wintertime, so the third important step to maintaining healthy hair during the cold winter months, its moisturizing and sealing your ends. So I like to moisturize and seal my ends pretty often, but definitely in the winter time. Just because, like I said my hairs, a lot driving the winter times, and it is any other time during the year I like to use a little bit heavier oils in the winter than I do in the summer. One thing that I would definitely suggest: I love coconut oil. I love it. It'S my favorite oil in the entire world. I use it all the time and I use it for everything, but in the wintertime I do find out that it dries my hair out. A little bit more than other oils because coconut oil in warm temperatures, it's a liquid. You know almost at room temperature, it's a liquid, but in cold temperatures it's a solid and you can definitely see and feel the difference in your hair. So if I use coconut oil in the summertime, it's fine like my hair, is like it's fluffy. You know it absorbs into the hair it's great, but in the winter time when I use it, I tend to notice that it makes my ends a little dry and a little brittle. Just because that's the kisses nnessee of the oil, the oil tends to get hard in cold temperatures, so I like to use other oils or you can use a coconut oil when you do a hot oil treatment. I like to use other oils like olive oil. As my next favorite and jojoba, oil is really nice um in the winter time I do use Jamaican black, castor oil, but just a little bit because Jamaican black, castor oil is so heavy, and I really don't like heavy oils in right here. So another thing that you can do when you moisturize and seal is to use heavier oils or creams cream moisturizers are really good for the winter because they do absorb into your hair. My favorite are just leaving conditioners the cream, leaving conditioners. I like Eden. Body Works, coconut shea, leave-in, conditioner and also Mason Jessie's. I think it's just called Miss Jessie's leaving condition, but like it's really good, those are my favorites and I use those daily like I'm using those daily in my hair and I'm stealing them pretty often. I normally feel very often in the winter, especially when I wear my hair like this, so I just got my hair like this using flexi rods and not that much heat. So at night time I moisturize and seal my ends and then I'll roll it in with the flexi rods and it'll absorb into the hair overnight. My hair's not oily as my greasy and it's not lay down and that's what works for me. So I get a lot of questions about oiling your scalp. You know a lot of people. We were raised to grease our scalp. You know mom and grandma told us all the time they got a crease on scalp. Our scalp is. I definitely need to do me personally. I do not put oil on my scalp because I don't like oily hair, but I do have very dry stout, so how I combat my dry scalp, especially during that winter time, is by using hot oil treatments how oil treatments are really good because it gives your Hair a chance to absorb a lot of the moisture and oils, and then you can wash your hair so that your hair isn't super super oily, so I haven't done a tutorial on a hot oil treatment. If you guys want me to do one, I can, but basically what you do is you get your favorite oil on or combination of your favorite oils and you distribute it all throughout your hair, from your scalp to the ends of your hair and you wrap your Hair either in a plastic cap or in some saran wrap, and you sit under the dryer for about 15 to 20 minutes after you've done sitting under the dryer. That'S when you wash your hair. I was just washing, not co, washing when you do higher oil treatments because I like to get you know most of the oil off of my hair. But when you stem to the dryer it allows the oil to absorb into your hair. So it's fine to wash it afterward. So after you get out of the dryer, you wash your hair and you continue to wash and deep conditioning like how you normally would, but you can definitely see a difference in the texture and life and body of your hair. After a hot oil treatment - and normally I don't have many problems with try scalp for at least a week or two after that now when my scalp does get dry, I just know it's time to wash my hair in the my scalp gets dry, pretty often, which Is why I wash my hair every week, but definitely in the winter time I find out how all those treatments work really well for me, and the reason that my regimen is a little bit different in the winter than the summer is because I actually do do Different things, depending on what time of the year it is when it's really hot and moist outside. I definitely don't put that much oil in my hair because I know I'm like sweating and it's humid and you know oils run down your face and give us your skin. So I tend to stay away from a lot of oils during the summer. The hot summer months, but when it starts getting a little bit cooler, I noticed that loyals really helped maintain the moisture and elasticity of my hair. So that's what works for me. Another important thing for winter haircare is wearing protective styles, so I really love wearing my hair down. I like wearing it straight, I like wearing it with curls, but in the wintertime. It'S really important to keep as much heat off of your hair as possible and to not let our hair rub up against our clothes and break off, because that's how we get split ends and, like I said during the winter time, our hair is very dry or Just tends to get a lot drier, so it's much more susceptible to breakage and it does rub up against our clothes or because our jackets, our scarves, we wear wool, hats or fleece hats. All of that is just drying out our hair and making it a little bit more prone to breakage. So protective styles are very important during the winter time. One of the most important parts of maintaining healthy hair in the winter time is using less heat. We just finished a no heat November challenge check out some of my videos that I have links above on what I did for mine heat November. I did a braid out. I did a silk wet Roller set. I did a lot of things to a lot of styles to keep heat off of my hair for the entire month of November, but during the wintertime you do want to keep as much heat off of your hair as possible throughout the year in general. But definitely during the wintertime, the good thing about the wintertime is that once you put heat on your hair one time, you really don't have to put that much heat on it. Often because it's cold outside and your hair is you're, not sweating your hair out and it's not getting poofy and fuzzy and frizzy, so you don't have to keep putting heat on it. So that's a good thing. We want to just make sure that we're using protective styles and that we're moisturizing our hair and co-washing it and putting all of that moisture back into our hair that we're losing throughout the day while we're out in the cold winter time. So another really important thing about hair care in general. No matter what time of the year it is is eating healthy people, don't really realize how much your diet and your lifestyle affect the health of your hair. You definitely want to be drinking as much water as possible. You want to eat vegetables and you want to eat a lot of foods that have fiber and vitamins in them so that you can one be healthy, but when you're healthy, your entire body is healthy. They'Ll notice, the change in your skin and in the thickness and texture of your hair. So another thing that's super important about taking care of your hair is how you sleep with your hair. If you do not wear a satin scarf or a satin bonnet, what are you doing with your life? Okay, you do not need to be lengths going to bed without putting anything on your head. I'M sorry like I just can't imagine. I can't go to sleep anywhere without putting something in my head. If I do I'm having a bad day the next day, um, if you don't have a silk scarf or a silk bonnet, you can definitely use a silk or satin pillowcase. But you do want to make sure that you are taking care of your hair at nighttime. Whether that's rolling it up, whether that's wrapping it or, if you're, just putting it in a high bun and putting a scarf on and just a bonnet over it. You just want to make sure that you want to make sure you're not losing any oils, while you're sleeping because we lose enough oils during the day with everything else that we have going on. So that's all that I have for you guys today. If you have any extra tips or things that you do during the winter time, that you think would be helpful for me to add to my regimen. Definitely let me know leave it down in the comment section. I love talking with you guys and learning new things. That'S all that I have for you guys today. Thank you so much for watching have a happy holiday and other videos from us.

Corine W: you literally just saved my hair. I just moved to Ohio from Georgia and was sealing with coconut oil but I noticed how dry and crispy my hair still felt . after this video I started sealing with olive oil and giiiirrrll I tell you it has made a world of difference! thank you so much for the tip. love this channel to pieces

K_da_Travaler: All these tips are great! Living in the Midwest (2 degree weather) I find myself heavy on the conditioning and moisture and seal method!

sweetfm2008: Your hair looks so pretty!!! Great tips and I would love to see a video on your go to winter protective styles!!!

PrttyBrwnEyez13: Great tips, Aleah. I need to do better with moisturizing and sealing my ends. I try to not do it too often or use a lot of product because I have fine hair. I also need to incorporate hot oil treatments and protective styles, and learn how to do heatless styles, or just styles that don't require lots of direct heat.

ammmmmmmmm1: This video is a blessing. Thank you soo much. I recently just started having dry scalp and i did not know why or how to fix it. I will definitely be trying a hot oil treatment this weekend.

Sephoraaa: Yes please! I would love to see a video about hot oil treatments and also show how to make them

S. Ariane: My favorite YouTube channel ever. You guys are my motivation on my relaxed hair journey. So grateful!

Aja Moyé: This was such a helpful video! THANK YOU! Do you have any recommendations for your fav moisturizing conditioners for weekly deep conditioning? I'm currently using the Olive Oil ORS DC but I know it has some protein in it...thanks in advance :)

SDot2385: I know this video is old but these tips are still great. I’d like to add: Wear a hat! I moved from Georgia to Massachusetts and my hair took a beating the 1st winter despite doing a lot of the things you suggest. Wearing a satin lined hat makes a huge difference if you live someplace where it gets below freezing on a regular.

Deidre: Hey Aleah I've been watching your videos for awhile !! I just subscribed ! Your hair is bomb girl ! It's very nice and thick and I can't imagine going to bed without my bonnet on lol thanks for the tips love

Sapphire Hair Care: I really LOVE YOUR channel! ,.....great tips! Thank you, your hair is so Beautiful ❤ God Bless you

BurgundyandBlue1111: This is nice advice. When I travel I put the silk scarf and bonnet in my purse! Even if I have to pull over to take a nap on the road or sleep on a flight, trust and believe, a scarf or bonnet is going on my head!!! The only thing that didn't fully jibe with me about your advice is not applying any oil to the scalp. I feel like my hair is its nicest when I do have a more solid scalp regimen in the mix.....even if the oil/cream is light, going through and placing a little oil/cream on the scalp (not just a hot oil treatment and wash out) after the wash/condition regimen makes my hair grow lusher and stay silkier, while still being touchable and somewhat moveable. Also, it has lengthened the time between relaxer touch-ups (I used to have it done every 6-8 weeks, now it's every 9-10 weeks - so it is saving me some $). I don't oil the scalp every day, just post wash/condition. My hair has grown about 6 inches in the last year and half (which is great because for several years prior to this regimen the break off rate was about the same as the growth rate). You are so spot on about the weather too. My hair grows much more easily when I live down south vs living up north. I believe the cold frigid air up north in the winter is part the challenge of keeping nice hair while living there. I think the water may be a little harder up north too. Thanks for sharing your tips. :) <3

Francesca Agyeman: This is why I use hair braids during the winter as its easier to maintain. Although our hair types might be a bit similar it is difficult to judge what won't work for your hair because every black girl has a different regiment to their hair. isn't it better talking to a professional? I like idea about using hot oil treatments for your scalp, but isn't better to use a leave in conditioner as a daily moisture for your scalp?

Ms. Aaron: Beautiful!!!!! ur hair, ur skin, ur personality is beautiful. love the videos be blessed hun

Desmarray Newby: Please do a hot oil treatment tutorial
