How To Gibson Girl Hair Edwardian/ Victorian Vintage Retro Hairstyle Tutorial - Fitfully Vintage

inspired by : https://twitter.com/oakoscar100/status...

This was a requested style that I thougth would be really tricky, but, actually it really isn't. You have to get to gripos with rolling your hair but, once you've got that then your flying!

This is a super-cute romantic look that looks awesome with off-the shoulder dresses. It would work really well with a Grecian style outfit too I think.

Let me know if you try it! I love to hear from you all. ALSO I have just set up a twitter and facebook account so, if you are into all of that then add me.

Dare I say, at a push this could be a bridal style, imagine with delicate little flowers placed around the central bun - beautiful!

Music by Kevin Macleod

In this tutorial, I will show you how to create this Edwardian or victorian-esque style, reminiscent of the pin ups of the time, Gibson girls, the stars really soft and romantic great for summertime. This star really works best when your hair has texture. My hair's been left to go naturally wavy. If you have straight hair, then you may find a little back. Combing and teasing will help you achieve the look along with some hairspray section, your hair, from ear to ear across the top of your head and pin that whole front section out of the way and then on your crown create a circle of hair. This will be the center of the style and twist that hair into a bun just to keep it out of the way for now you're going to want to leave around two inches of hair along the circumference of your hairline. To make the the rolls the bouffant section of the style, I'm starting with the front section of my hair, just taking my shortest layers at the front and rolling them back on themselves. Just walking my fingers back and rolling as I go to make a tube and then I'm going to pin the bottom section of this tube against my head with bobby pins. I'M keeping my index finger in the tube at all times to keep its shape and to help me guide the bobby pins in the correct into the correct place. You do not want to pin the top of this tube. This style needs as much height as you can give it so only pin the hair that's next to your head, and what you're going to want to do is continue around your hairline. With this hair, that's been left out you going to roll it back onto your head and pin in place. You can direct the tubes so that they look like they're merging into one another. You want it to look as if you have one continuous roll going around your head, just be careful when you're inserting the bobby pins, not to squash the tubes down. You want to just pin the tubes along the head: don't squash them, so I'm just now rolling the very last section at the back of my head. It is a little bit tricky in a persevere. Keep trying! If I can do it, you can just keep rolling back and checking in the mirror. This was pretty tricky for me. Cuz, I didn't actually have a mirror. I was just going by feel and you might want to pay a little bit of attention to your role once you finish the last section, you want it to look like a continuous roll of hair, rather than lots of different sections, so you may need to some More bobby pins - and this look is really soft and there's lots of hair falling around the face. But I feel for my face shape that I need to get rid of my fringe and so I'm just lightly pinning that over the top of my first roll. Just very lightly pushing it over, so it's not squashing the style at all and then just bringing down some hair in front of my ears and without damaging the actual rolls. You have to be careful now we're going to deal with this top bit, that we've twisted away and take our hairband. That'S the same color of your hair as your hair and put it in a ponytail and then split the ponytail in two. It'S up to you. Two or three sections and you're going to create some really large dry flat, pin curls and place them on the top of the head, trying to cover the ponytail holder and then just bobby, pin them in place. This is where, if your hair is wavy or curly, it works so well because it's going to look a little messy, it's not perfect and it doesn't matter it just adds adds to the romantic feel. So I decided to do two swirls two pin curls. You can just choose it's up to you. Whatever looks best on your head and after you've pinned these down the Styles finished, you need to loosen pretty bits of hair. Wherever you see a nice bit of hair to loosen down, I've got a loop at the bottom right hand corner there, I'm just going to pull down and make it into a loose curl, adding to the romantic feel. So you can do the same or you can keep it all up up to you. Whatever suits you, you

sydney .phoebo: Excellent tutorial- clear, to the point, no vacuous or repetitive chatter, good camera angles, and a brilliant hairstyle.

Heather Foster: My mom suggested this style for my wedding day next year, and I have to admit I'm totally impressed. :-) :-) I do plan on having this style and you make it look so easy :-) ... I just hope a hair stylist has the ability to make it happen. Thank you for making this old-timey hairstyle new again.

Whisperwoman: I would like to add that Victorian ladies and those that came before them saved all the loose hair that shed into their brushes. They would take a bunch when they had saved enough, bunch and ball it up a bit, rat it a bit so it will loosely stay together and then use it in their rolls to add more volume. I suppose in today's market you could also do the same with some loose weave you may have lying about. Great way to stay true to your natural color and fill in the rolls. The store bought rolls never match well.

CM Addams: thank you so much for this tutorial. I actually have a Victorian themed photoshoot tomorrow and this would be perfect for the outfit I have planned out, & I like that it wasn't too complicated. :)

xxx xxx: Natalie, I still can't decide if you  are more beautiful or more skilled! The hair styles you present underline your natural beauty so well... You should wear it every day!  That's one thing. Secondly - finally somebody got to the original recipes and showed, how they did it over a century ago. This "historical authenticity" is a really strong side of your presentations for me. I couldn't do it myself  due to my luck of imagination in this field;) I'm an amateur passionate of 19th and first half of 20th century fashion and have been looking for this type of tutorial forever. So thank you, Natalie and keep doing it!:)

Seeker Finder: I did this hair for a fellow cast mate and I wish I could show you the awesome results!!! It is sooo easy and it turned out fabulous! !!

Heather Foster: It has now been a week since I got married and everyone in attendance loved my hair! It stayed in place the whole night through (with lots of bobby pins and hair spray of course) but the only thing is, I am unable to load a pic through here. Is there a Facebook page I can send you one or two?

Denise Kaufmann: Thank you for this great tutorial! Just perfect for a Victorian theme party:)

mssarahgordon1: Thank you for this - I have never been any good at styling my hair, so when I needed a late-Victorian look for our short film, 'The Child's Note' (see the link) I was thrilled to find your tutorial because it was so easy to follow. Your reassurances all along that it would look (and was supposed to look) a bit messy kept me going - it wasn't until the very last roll was up that it all came together - the style I have in the film was in fact my very first attempt! Many thanks again. https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=OLIf9nBiAnI

Kath F: Thank you! This is exactly what I've been looking for and you made it so very clear and simple x

Fitfully Vintage: Thank you. Tights are such a good idea. Yes, in this era they used all sorts of stuff to give their hair the shape they needed, from natural hair rats to crazy looking frames, I think it's easy to look back and think ' WOW how did they manage that? They managed it with help - just like us!. Thank you for the tip xx

SoulRythm: Thank you, thank you, THANK YOU!! I've always wanted to dress my hair up in victorian style but finding the right instructions have been horrible. I have been in love with this hairstyle worn by Felicity Jones in the Jane Austen film Northanger Abbey from Masterpiece (2008). It is the style she wears to her first ball in town when she meets Henry for the first time. I absolutely love it and I think a lot of people who enjoy the older types of styles would as well! Perfect Fae: I shaved my head in April of 2017 for pediatric cancer. It's now August of 2018 & my hair is shoulder length & very layered. It's been 1 year & 4 months of growing out my hair! I have been taking excellent care of my hair, by the way. It's not damaged at all. I never style it with heat or use heat to dry it. I never bleach it. I never dye it with permanent dye. I dyed it black last week with henna hair dye which is semi permanent...It really suits my Victorian, goth style/Victorian, funeral parlor outfits.

Fitfully Vintage: Brilliant. Thanks for letting me know. I hope all goes well x

Ace Kalex: I am curious...I've never seen the 'finger roll' technique before...my grandmother (born 1886), wore her hair this way a lot as a  young woman.  I remember asking her how she did it, and she said she used "rats" (i.e. puffy rolls) and wound her hair around them to give the fullness and volume of the Gibson style.  And she had thick hair to begin with!  This version is also lovely, but perhaps not so easy for beginners
