The Best Wig Styles For Your Face Shape

Face shape is one - if not the most - important factor when choosing a wig style. I recently spent much too long in a wig shop trying on wig after wig just to find that the ones I liked on the mannequin didn't look quite so great on me. The error here lay in my lack of knowledge regarding my face shape. It’s important for anyone in search for the perfect wig to consider the most common face shapes and what flatters them.

I’ll be assigning the perfect style to each unique face so you know what to look for when shopping for your next piece, and you don’t end up having the same horrible experience as me!

Round Face Shape

Much like with clothing, each person’s shape is more flattered by different things. What looks good on my round face shape may not be the best fit for someone else’s square or oval shaped face. Because of my roundness, I have to find styles that will help slim the overall look of my face. The key is to keep closeness in the sides. This can be accomplished with sideswept bangs or lengthy layers that start at the jawline. Avoid any cuts that come above the neckline and stay clear of volume around the cheek area.

Long layers with the movement offered in a blow-out style is a great choice. My current favorites are Amber Ht (Hand-Tied) by Wig Pro and Knockout by Raquel Welch. These pieces are gorgeous and guaranteed to slim your features.

Heart Face Shape

With a heart shaped face, you’ll want to look at wigs that fall to the chin and below and keep an eye out for descriptive words like cascading while you browse. Barrel curls are a flattering choice, but you can also go with a tighter curl, so long as the crown area doesn’t have too much volume (sorry 80s fans). A heart shaped face has similarities to an inverted triangle, coming to a point at the chin. The idea is to add in our volume where the face will compliment it. In the case of the heart face shape, we should add our volume at and below the jawline. My wig suggestion is Cascade by Ellen Wille. It is a beautiful length with waves that add dimension.

Oval Face Shape

Oval face shapes are balanced and proportionate (lucky you!). Our oval shaped friends may be reading this thinking, “What? I’ve never had a problem finding a wig that is flattering.” This is because we aren’t having to minimize or maximize and specific features. This opens up many wig choices, so many that it can be overwhelming! A good starting place for style that I have always loved is anything with soft curls such as the Curl Appeal Wig by Gabor. It frames the face beautifully while still allowing for texture and movement, and how fun is that?

Square Face Shape

With a square face shape, we need to find you a style that softens the angles of your face, while allowing your strong jawline to be the star of the show. Styles that are most flattering are usually medium to short in length with some kind of texture - loose curls, wavy tendrils, wispy bangs, etc. It’s a good idea to avoid pin straight styles, as these will enhance the sharpness of your features, rather than celebrate them. I suggest the Switch 4 by Ellen Wille. It’ super cute and feminine, and you’re sure to be envied by all - maybe even your oval shaped friends.

Diamond Face Shape

With a diamond face shape, it can sometimes be difficult to find a style that’s safe from causing an overly angled, or contrarily, bit rounded appearance. You’re going to want to find styles that don’t add any excess volume but still keep some texture in the mix. For you, I would suggest the APP by Ellen Wille. I like that this piece keeps things light and wispy, and is styled to frame the temple area in a subtle and trendy way.

Triangle or Pear Face Shape

The triangle face shape is the most narrow at the forehead and gets broader at the jawline. For this shape, you'll want to add width around the temples and closeness at the chin. Utilize some pretty side swept bangs and long layers!

Zara is the perfect choice for a triangle shape and comes in gorgeous, rich darks and shimmering lights and various colors in between, giving you all the variety you need in order to make the best choice! 

Oblong Face Shape

The oblong face has more length than width. Unlike the round face, the oblong face won't have as much fullness in the cheeks and you will see more length in the chin and maybe the forehead. For this shape, you will want to add fullness to the sides of the face and avoid adding extra height to the crown. Try Alexis by Jon Renau to get the look.
