How To Cut Hair! Surviving Your First Haircut In Quarantine!

HOW TO CUT HAIR! Surviving your first haircut in QUARANTINE!

Many of you out there are cutting hair for your first time. Here are some useful tips to help get you through your first haircut in quarantine and maybe keep on doing it to save money.

Hey everyone: it's hair, 101, with April back from a very long time of retirement and we'll call it hibernation - and today I'm here with my 14 year old boy Zaid and we're gon na. Do a haircut and look he's so sad that he's missing school you guys covet 19, has taken the entire planet by storm and we're all just trying to survive, and so most people are stuck at home and not able to go out and get haircuts. Most salons are closed honestly, and I noticed that there was a trend in our my videos started to like pick up and get a little bit more attraction, and I thought maybe I should do a specific video to help you mom is out there or you wipes Or maybe you even the boys out there that are like man, I need to cut my hair. Well, I wouldn't suggest cutting your own hair and here's why you can't reach the back, so you need a buddy if you can, if you are all by yourself, and you really can't find anyone and you want to trim it up, you could probably do a pretty Good job just kidding around the ears in the front, maybe but trust me this is done best when it's with someone else doing it. So maybe you guys can learn as a team and cut each other's hair, but the biggest thing I'm gon na say right now is: if you don't have the right equipment, it's gon na be a lot harder. These are just like fabric scissors, and I'm gon na show you well I'm only gon na cut off some bit. It doesn't matter. You can do a haircut with these if you're desperate, it's just this is the problem. Your hands gon na get really tired, and as long as they're super super sharp, you still can make it work. But it's not gon na be as precise. If you have the ability to order a pair of hair, cutting shears on Amazon or or even pick one up at Walmart or whatever, if there are some in your area, that's the best option. You might already have some at home. The other great thing to have would be a pair of hair clippers. I use the end they're so dirty I have their dusty guys mastered and the smash master clipper and you can use it with guards or you can do it without guards. There'S a lot of different ways to cut it all right, so I'm just gon na clip his longer hair out of the way. So I can show you this. So if you don't have access to guards, you can use a comb as the guard and you can kind of just like lift up the hair, and then you you cut it in sections like that, and the secret here is to try to get it a little Bit shorter, like as short as you want it down in here, and then you slowly get longer as you go up, because it's a taper and you want it to taper from the shorter length and slowly graduate to a longer length at the top so that it Blends and here's a little secret, you guys you don't have to do an entire haircut right now, if you're just trying to make do until you get back to your stylist. Even if you just clean up the edges and the perimeter, it makes a huge difference and maybe you'll just look like you're growing your hair out a little bit but you'll look clean and put together and you'll feel a lot better. So I'm gon na go ahead and just do that. I'M gon na show you how to do it with just these tools. If you had a guard, then you would just kind of do but the shorter guard in this area and then the longer one up here and then you'd cut scissors on top. But I'm gon na just show you this way. So you can actually close the blade on the Clippers. This is open, this is closed and you can go around the perimeter and just kind of clean up any long hairs and here's a little secret. I push down the ear and then pull the comb. The hair down with the comb and that just gets it in and you want to be careful not to go in like this right here because you can cut skin if you get it in these teeth. So if you have it pointing like this, it's safe, so you see how I'm just kind of like cleaning up that hairline and then back here around the ear you can take it and just slowly go up following the natural growth of the hair and then fold The ear about oh you're trying to look in the mirror, you need to just look straight there. We go he's trying to learn too, but now that I got that perimeter done around the ear now I can go in and lift the hair up. So that's what you would do with the Clippers. You would just kind of blend it and then slowly pull away from the head up here until it's a little bit longer and that's better than it was like. Even if that's all, I did that's presentable. If you had thinning shoes, you could go in and like soften, that line a little bit, but look at the difference between this side of his hair. I'M gon na do a straight on smile, okay, so this looks a lot more clean and then this side is like I've been in quarantine for a month. So I'm telling you guys it will make you feel so much better, because I know that some of you are going crazy and even if you can just get that that side around the ears on these boys haircuts cleaned up, it's gon na help a lot. I'M gon na go ahead and finish this haircut and show you guys a few more techniques and I'm gon na give him a whole haircut, but I'm just gon na show you a couple more options. If you are desperate and all you have, are these fabric scissors? You can use a comb and the fabric scissors too you just you see how it's a little bit harder, because you have to like turn your wrist out like this, your halfs gon na get kind of sore but desperate times call for desperate measures. So you really can get in there and just kind of lift up the hair with a comb, and it's gon na take a lot longer because you're having to like make these little cuts. Okay, look down! I'M going to show you on the back of my hair. Oh yeah look down she's scared because I'm using real scissors - and I told him not to do that - but my point is: is that it's possible? It'S definitely not ideal. It'S gon na! Take you a lot longer, okay, but you can see it's looking better. Even in this area, so Clippers are gon na be. If you have Clippers, that's your best option if you're, not if this is all you have try that, but I'm gon na use my actual shark fin shears, my favourite ones here, so I'm gon na show you the difference between cutting with these. You see how I can keep my wrist straight and get in here and like cut, and I'm all my having to do here is move my thumb a little bit versus open and close open and close, and then, when I try to get it here, look how Bad my wrist is to try to get it parallel to the head, it's very painful, so to do a whole haircut with these. You work your hand will hurt afterwards but, like I said, if you're desperate I've even used, though I've even used the little baby fingernail scissors to cut around the ear, sometimes cuz they're, already kind of curved just to get in there. But yeah, like I said, even if you can just get the perimeter done, it's going to make a huge difference and I'm gon na go ahead and just finish this haircut. How I would normally do it for those of you that maybe do have the tools. Then you can see, but I hope this video helps you guys that are kind of in a pinch, and maybe you can learn a little bit more as I go. So if I was just going to start this haircut from scratch, I would use the Clippers first and I would open it. So it's a little bit longer and I would flip it up at the wrist. As I come on to the the lower part of his head - and I would do that all the way around the perimeter now - this takes a little bit more skill. So if you're new getting this tight into the head and then blending, it is a little bit more difficult because you do have a little bit heavier of Alliance. You need to work on it a little bit more. That'S why I was suggesting maybe using the shears and I've been brushing the top part of his hair because he does like to kind of have it longer. On top, I'm brushing all that over and I'm gon na clip it, and that's just gon na keep the longer pieces out of the way so cuz. There is like a disconnect. If I pull these pieces down here and then just cut, it then they'd be too short for what he wants to do with this style, so anything beyond the role of the head, where, if you pull a comb, if you put a comb straight against the head, This is where the hair needs to be the shortest and, as the comb pulls away from the head, because the head Brown actually the head's rounding away from the comb, that's where the hair gets longer, and so anything above this line right here, I'm going to be Careful not to cut too short and everything past this line where the head starts to roll and be like more of a flat in between these two spots, I'm going to pin over here, so I don't get it too short. Okay and I pull the ear out of the way a lot you'll see me doing that, and it's just because it's kind of in the way it's too bad. We can't pop those suckers off for haircuts and then pop them back on, but you get used to working around them. So then, I'm just pulling the hair away and up just to blend it in, and a lot of this is just eyeballing it and keep trying until blends and looks a little bit better. Another thing I would suggest if you are trying to get into doing their hair permanently - maybe maybe finances are tough, because there's a lot of people losing their jobs right now with Cova, which is super sad, maybe you're gon na be cutting here for a little while Until things normalize a little bit more for you, I would strongly suggest investing in a pair of bees. These are thinning shears and they can really take a haircut from a mature looking to professional, because you'll see this heaviness right in here. If I lift this and just feather it out with these finishers on the ends a little bit, look how much better it blends. Isn'T that amazing, really it's cool and these are fun they're they're, a great tool to have - and you could even I've, used these on a lot of fringes and bangs just to kind of soften that heavy line. But you can use I've. You can use these on long hair, so it's a very fun tool to have and there's some that aren't super expensive. So it just depends on how often you're using them, if you're using them a ton, you'd probably want nicer ones, but if you're not using it very much. If it's just for your own family, then you can probably get away with not a very expensive pair. So, okay, look at the before and after on his size. This is before this is grown out, and this is what it looks like now: much cleaner, okay! Let'S do it to the other side too, and then I'll do the back. So on the back, you can go up a little bit further to kind of match that line to coming across. So I like to have this line just kind of like curved down a little bit and come back around, so it's not super super straight but and then I come back in and I just blend it the same as I did on the sides. So then, I just take T edgers and I just kind of square out the the hairline a little bit here and go around the perimeter, look down and clean up the neck. Even if you think there isn't any hair there, there's teeny little blond hairs. So you can go ahead and clean it up nice, okay! So now that the sides are done even like you can see, even if I left the top of his hair and did nothing to it, it would just look like he has like a longer top pompadour. Whatever it's totally fine to do that, this is gon na, be the thing that makes it look like they got a haircut. I really could do nothing else to his hair and he'd be fine. Do you want me to leave it long theater? Do you want me to trim a little bit and I think a lot of people don't realize like how to get into like transition a cut from shorter haircut to a longer haircut? Maybe someone comes in and their hairs a little shorter than this, and then they show you a picture, that's more like what he has going on right now. You know like a longer and then a shorter on the sides. It'S okay to just cut their sights and be like alright, see you next time you don't have to be like. Oh, I have to cut the top like they're, not gon na get a discount because you don't cut the top of their hair. You can go through and use the thinning, shears or a razor or something to kind of like texturize the ends to make it look a little bit more finished. But if they're trying to change their style a lot of the times, you need to let things live and lie and just grow in order to transform into the new style and a lot of you might even try, leaving it longer. On top and just shortening the side and end up liking, it be like. Oh, this was my my quarantine hairstyle, but now I actually really like it. I tell what I'm doing here I'll pull up a section for you. This is the middle that I cut first, so the first section I do all my boys, hair cuts is almost always the middle, and I because the head rolls down right here. I pull it up straight and then I find where the head is higher and I draw a straight line in my mind from there, because if I were to cut the hair four inch or two inches everywhere, the front would look a lot shorter than the back. Because of the role of the head, and in order to fight that you need to leave, the actual hair here is going to be more like three inches and the hair up here is only going to be like two inches and that's how you do it? You pull it up in a straight line like a mohawk and then you let this straight line to the floor instead of following the role of the head, and so that's what I did. I went back like this and I just cut all that hair and so now, when I pull up these cross sections, you can see the shorter hair in that middle section that I pulled up right here so that hair shorter than this hair on the sides. So that's what I'm point cutting out and I'm just kind of knocking it down to the same level, and you could also envision a straight line. This way kind of like a flattop all right, so we decided this is the length we're going to go with. It is quite a bit shorter than he originally had, but I'm just gon na go through and use the thinning shears on the top to kind of soften any lines that are in there and then I'm gon na wash it out and style it and show you Guys what it looks like this is called strumming get all the hair out of there all right, you guys it's all clean styled. I hope this helped you guys good luck. We are praying for the entire world. We hope that this gets community immunity and it's over soon and that we can have some miraculous discoveries on how to treat this scary disease, because it is not fun and I hope you guys are staying healthy and happy. And let me know in the comments below if this was helpful. If you've had to do hair at home, and hopefully it doesn't look like those memes going around with the bowl cuts and all the really funny haircuts. It says, like that's kind of what made me think of doing this is like seeing well, I guess the mom haircuts are coming back. Hopefully not you guys. We have the internet now things don't have to be like that. So we'll see you guys later until next time, I'm not sure when that's gon na be, but thank you so much for watching and love. You guys miss you all bye!

Gracie to the Max: Any hairstylist who isn’t working, these kind of videos are great! We all may know how to “cut hair” but it’s good to use this time to see how other people work their craft! Let’s spread positivity! You can always come away with something new, and if you don’t agree with something you can just not do it! Cheers and love to my fellow professionals! ❤️

Gracie to the Max: Great video! Will be showing this to my clients! My advice to anyone (speaking from experience) cutting their own hair or someone Else’s: 1) LESS is always more. You can always cut more but you can NOT glue it back on 2) texturizing shears/thinning shears can be helpful in blending lines away 3) for longer hair like a bob or longer, when cutting the back always cut with chin down, there a reason we always ask for you to put your head down. It’s to make sure we get the hair below the occipital bone that pops in when your head is up 4) watch as many videos (like these) as you need to feel comfortable cutting (or coloring) 5)remember the difference between a good hair cut and a bad one is 2 weeks! Lol jokes aside, we (stylists) will be there for you when this calms down and will make you feel Ike a rockstar again! ❤️

Sherry Lynn: Your videos helped me learn how to cut my husband's hair years ago. I've been cutting his hair ever since. I've upgraded my scissors, clippers, etc. over the years. Good equipment definitely makes a difference in the quality of the haircut! Thank you for sharing your talent with us!

Kristi Mears Long: Having a new video from Hair 101 with April was one of the highlights of my work week, and it has been so missed! Thank you so much!!

Whadda Good Dog: April!! thank you so much - you are AMAZING. Thank you for giving me the confidence to do this...here goes my first attempt! My husband has a new job and it is online video at this point so he must look presentable. I will let you know. I have two girls too, would love to see a long hair trim, too!

Kitty Kerry: Hi April, I just wanted to say a huge thank you for your videos - I have never cut a style into long hair before, and 3 weeks into isolation my daughter was desperate for a hair cut - I haven't trained or watched anything before, literally searched YouTube for a long to short cut and found your video from 4 years ago where you did your sister's hair - drastic cut! I watched the cutting step by step and watched it whilst cutting my daughter's hair (she's 15 btw). Then I read the comments from the video!!! You got a lot of negative comments and I was really disappointed for you. I went on to watch the colour and style result, and your sister looked amazing and happy! I am so grateful to you, and my daughter and I are both very happy. I'm going to order some thinning shears and a razor to put some layers in, as I don't have a clue how to do this with scissors, but your video has given me the confidence to try myself!

Christina Marvin: Love your videos! I was just looking for one of your old videos and saw this. You're so great at explaining haircuts for a novice like me! Off to cut my son's hair for the first time. I told him it's a good time for me to practice if he wants me to do it from now on!

blue: My husband is going to cut my hair tomorrow. Pray for me. Update: He did such a good Job! And it was nice to do something together that we otherwise never would have done.

Reanna Garnica: This was soooo helpful!!! I’m a want to be self taught hairdresser (just for my kids) and have watched tons of these types of videos, and this was the most helpful one on a boy’s haircut I’ve ever seen! Thanks for posting!

AlliNicole: I just cut my husband's hair at home for the first time yesterday going off of one of your older videos and it turned out great! Thanks April!

Nancy Whipple: So great to watch you on 101 with April. Being a hairstylist myself, I loved watching your videos and your many highlights and haircuts. With women not being able to go to the salon, You should do a video on color touch up.

Becca Dolce: I did my bf's the other week- barely a week into the salon's being closed but he was desperate. He has curly hair which took me a little longer because it's so thick, but I think curly hair hides a lot of sins thankfully! We were both pretty happy with how it came out.

Veronica Ewings: Happy to see you back on this channel! Prayers for you and your family

Valerie Dan: This was a helpful boy’s hair cut I’d like to attempt on my 13 year old son. Thanks for the video! Stay safe and we are praying for the world also.

AncestralBliss: This is a great idea, April. Thanks for sharing this. I'm sure this was off the radar for a lot of people amidst the initial panic, and now they're thinking about it. Really appreciate the inclusion of using every day scissors. I don't colour my hair, but I've noticed some ladies I work with are having a lot of their roots showing ... maybe you could come up with an idea for helping ladies (and men) with that issue. Blessings.

C Jarvis: Thank you soooo much for this video!! I've been saying this is what we need. Hairdressers aren't shut yet in Australia but we're in iso and can't get out so at some point I'll have to tackle my sons hair. I'd love for a video on cutting fringes/bangs as well

coralowery921: I absolutely love your haircutting tutorials! I cut my daughter's hair using your box layers video, and it is such a beautiful look on her :-)

James N Brenda: Thank you for sharing this. I’m sharing with my family. Also, praying for y’all and EB. Praying God’s strength and protection during this pandemic. God bless and keep you all safe and sound.

Georgiana Lupu: Hi April! Thankfully my husband has a really short haircut so it's super simple but i do cut my mom's hair for a few years now thanks to you❤❤ so thank you! Stay safe!

Amberly Xochimitl: I started watching you ages ago. Over the years I have checked in and received so much useful advice and tips. Thank you for keeping this up. You’re lovey and we have been doing this as my husband is a healthcare worker in New York. It always is a joy to see you.

Heather Phillips: I have two boys, one college age and one in HS, both stuck at home with their parents. They like to wear their hair longish and I can usually convince them to get a haircut before a holiday. Easter is coming so I ordered a set of cutting and thinning shears from Walmart. After an hour on Youtube I finally found your video. It is EXACTLY what I needed. Besides my knowing that they wont be returning to school for another month, your video gave me the confidence I needed to try it myself. Thank you! Prayers and blessings to your family.

fanniemammie: I love your video’s as a mom to do this at home! Thanks April

Atlanta Falcons Fan: Hi April I love your long hair! I’m glad you decided to grow it out!! Can you please do a hair straightening tutorial for your next video? I bet your hair looks amazing when it’s silky straight!! Are you going to leave it long or chop it off?

kristina Quinones: Thank you so much for taking the time to show us a boys haircut. It is obvious you have a ton of experience and talent. I have twin boys with pretty curly hair and I'm going to give it a shot. Thanks again!

Valerie Harrison: OMG!! Hes grown up !! I just watched the video when he was small and u cut his hair ❤️I LOVE your videos.. you seem to be the only one that gives such great detail as to why and when to cut specific areas.... Ive cut my whole families hair during this quarantine and they really came out great.... please keep videos coming!!! Cant wait to get thinning shears!!!

Jess Mac: Please bring these back! I’m still studying and Covid has stopped our study until further notice! Your videos made me want to do hairdressing.. when I started 5 years ago (I know long story why I’m still going.. babies put a pause and other things.. I binge watch the free salon Education Chanel with Matt and omg he’s amazing.. however you explain things so well!

Lizzie Beth: April you're back! ❤❤ Great video as always and great cut. Zade looks like you! Had to chop some of my own hair recently. Felt like a weight was lifted!

Mick Jay: Thank you very much for your videos. I found one of your videos from about 7 yrs ago and I was able to cut my boys and hubby’s hair. Your a life saver and amazing at explaining.

ropehitch: Just cut my wife's hair for the first time using your "basic girls cut" video. She is happy with the results so thanks ! Good instruction.

Afif Ramli: Wow, welcome back! I used to watch your videos to learn how to cut hair. I've been cutting my mom's hair ever since :) now that I'm married and have a son, I cut both my wife and son's hair. I'm not very good still since I don't cut hairs every day, but I do want to perfect the art of hair cutting. Just bought a pair of shears and hair clipper. Hope to see more videos from you.

Emily Herx: You are amazing! I’m an esthetician in a salon/spa, so it’s hard to be away from my clients. You are amazing and love watching your older videos!

S8 Computers: Thank you very much for this. I have done both my teenage boys now and surprisingly they look okay . Much appreciated and greetings from Sheffield in UK

E Y: Hi April, Your videos are great! I’m going to attempt to cut my dads hair. I have a short layered bob that NO ONE else can cut besides my hair dresser and I’m sad I can’t get to her as I need a trim. I have photos of all angles when it was freshly cut. Any chance I can send them to you and you can do a video teaching how to do a trim?

Debra Pritts: Great tips and teachingLove watching your family vlog too. Very sweet family and children

brigraceable: My husband is going to do your 90 degree haircut on my curly hair once we get our shears delivered. Very helpful!

Missy Oomen: Thank you that was so helpful. I tried to cut my son's hair before but didn't know how to do it. Now I know what I did wrong and can try again.

Victor Newman: If you all want to make this much easier and faster, just use a clipper with a #8 on the top and use a #3 - 4 clipper for the sides and back . You can then blend it in with a #6 between the #8 and # 3 . No scissors required. If you want it shorter, just go down in clipper number. Its what I do and it always comes out good. Have been doing it for years now.

Shirlee Kane: Can you please make more of these videos I have six boys ages 7,11,14,15,15,16 so you can understand my dilemma at the moment. Im great with the clippers. Shaved lots of heads, now I think I might pick up a new hobby while in quarantine.

Gracie to the Max: Also, just came back from your cutting Zades hair 6 years ago when you’re talking about taking barbering in school and having to learn men’s cute WITHOUT guards. I totally agree and learned the same way. Do you have a video with using the guards though to show people to cut with them because they didn’t learn to do proper clipper/scissor over comb?

Emily Taylor: When would you go straight to middle section to cut and not the sides first? Watching all your videos and confused what to start with. Thanks for your help x

buckfiftyfilms: Thank you so much April! Very helpful!

Tina S: Love your Videos ! Love your Long Hair ! To trim the length..Brush Hair Forward. Tie at middle of forhead. Brush hair down. CUT STRAIGHT ACROSS. This leaves Length & perfectly even !

Bruce Wayne: That clipper over comb technique is tricky. Especially seeing your guides. I have thinning shears, never thought to use them. Thanks for the suggestion.

Lynda Adams: I have been cutting mine for 7 years. Backwards and in a mirror. Good tutorial!

Jazzy Tree Boutique: Perfect look and great variety of tricks and tips. Thanks!!

Jeannie Benfaida: Thank you! Very helpful ❤️

K Anderson: I watched one of your videos on cutting little girls hair and it turned out perfect on my daughter.! THANK YOU SO MUCH! Now I am on to cutting my son and husbands hair.. Fingers crossed it turns out well too!

Marte Gulbrandsen: Thank you so much This was really helpful for my! My husband need this! And my son. I cut my own hair, and often my girls, and the dog offcourse, but my son and husband I'm more unsecure where to start! I think I will try to use my dogs machine on them, cos I have a good one, with different options on it, and the scissors Hopefully it will help their looks, and they will be happy, or perhaps they will start to bark, I'm not sure But your guidelines will help me a lot I'm sure❤ Thank you Stay safe❤Love from Marte in Norway

Megan Williams: Hahahahaha oh my gosh I wish I could see some pictures of the results when people who aren’t licensed try this at home. I’ve been a hairstylist for 12 years...6 of those years I did men’s cuts only and let me say when you started with no guard I was like ahhhhhhhh I can only imagine lines when someone who hasn’t ever done this..I trained new stylists for a few years too so you can imagine what I’ve seen. I pray every night this quarantine ends for so many reasons but man I hope people will just wait for their stylist if they can.

Cindy: I’ve watched your videos for YEARS and I have to say that you don’t seem to ha e aged a day! I think you might even be prettier now. ツ Hope that’s not too weird. And thank you so much for generously making your videos to educate all of us regular people.
