Hi everyone welcome back to my channel and in today's video we are going to go over three, pretty major kind of a hair issues and colors, and i'm going to go over the formulations and basically, what would need to be done to fix those hair, color problems. So i actually filmed these formulations earlier as a part of another video and then in the edit. I realized that it was just way too much information, so i figured it made more sense to make this video just about these formulations. So if you have these three major hair color issues, i'm going to go over what it is that you need to do to overcome these colors also, the mask me is real and i feel like this is the worst it's been yet so, thankfully, for you guys, It'S just going to be an intro and outro, so so yeah, let's just get into the video, so the first one is say: you're a brunette and you want to go lighter. You want to be blonde. So, let's take an example of a level 5 here who wants to be a level 9 or 10 blonde so clearly, here the first step is to extract color, meaning to lift your natural base color. So we're going to our bleach our lightener and lift her to that level. Now, if your hair is super healthy and your hair is natural, meaning, zero, artificial color, this is most likely possible, maybe in one sitting now, if you have any color any toner any previously lightened, hair and you're starting at a level five most likely. This will take more than one session just for the lightening process, just to lighten the hair to that level, nine or ten once you're at a level nine or ten. What you're going to go back in with is a toner, so basically just adding tone back in so basically just depositing extra tones over that lightened hair, so that you achieve the perfect tone that you are, after whether that's something more buttery and golden or something more Ash alright scenario: number two is you have gray hair and you have previously colored your hair. You were just looking to match your roots to that color and refresh that existing color that you have now. If you're going with boxed color you're most likely going to mix that one potion and apply it from root to ends to refresh from root to ends, and the reason why that is wrong is because that hair, that is not your root, has previously already been colored. So it's already a completely different scenario than that root color, so we have to treat each area as its own hair. So the first thing that you treat is the root which needs the most coloring. So because there is gray present, you know you need a permanent hair color to effectively cover that gray. I would recommend mixing that with a 20 volume developer, because that's going to open up the hair enough so that that gray, hair, which is typically resistant, is going to receive those pigments, and i always recommend and neutral shade to cover gray, regardless of the tone you're. After so say, you're going for an ashy brown and you have gray if you plan on using, say a level six ash on your base. Just imagine the hair is already gray and then you're adding a gray ashy tone. On top of it now does gray, cancel out gray, absolutely not so you're just going to have maybe a slightly darker gray, so the best and most effective way to actually cover gray is to go in with a neutral. This is only coloring and treating that rude area so far now, in order to refresh your ends or anywhere from your midsection down, if say, you want to add a little more vibrancy to your color. You want to refresh that color. Instead of going in with permanent color, because it's not necessary that hair is already covered, what you want to go in with is a toner, because the toner is actually acidic. There'S no need to reopen the hair and add tones in you're. Looking to do is stain the hair once again, with that same level and tone that is being used on the roots, it's far less damaging. In the long run, it will add a ton more shine to the hair, because that's what the hair is craving and you'll have beautiful, seamless results. So the third and last scenario is having somewhat of a warm brown base and wanting it to go ash now, if you're starting off with a reddish brown, and you want to end up with ashy brown tones, unfortunately putting a brown ash permanent color. On top of that is not going to get you there, and so, if you have golden tones, you're, probably naturally a level four or five or six, and if you're wanting to stay in the same level but more ashy. The only effective way to do that is to actually lift the hair to about an eight or a nine and then add ash tones on top of that. The reason for that is, while you're in between that level four and that level eight, where all those red tones are present, adding an ash on top of really strong red pigments is not going to show up as ash when you have a blonde, and you add An ash toner that ash really shows because the base, because the canvas is light and bright so imagine taking a very light, light yellow piece of paper. If you were to take a purple highlighter and draw through it, you would clearly see that they're violet purpley pigments. If you were to take that same highlighter marker and go over a piece of paper, that's reddish brown. It would just look darker in no way would you be able to tell if there are any violet or purpley pigments added and so the same thing with toner. The only way to actually showcase ashy gray violety tones is for the base or the background to be brighter, so whether this was in the salon or now in my virtual consoles. I get this question at least a couple times a week where i just want to be ash brown, but i don't want to use any bleach and i just want a toner. Unfortunately, if you use a toner the only way you can add ash, pigments or tone down that warmth is to go darker. So if you don't want to go darker, you say you're a level six and you want to stay at a level six, but you want to be ash. You need to lift at least two levels so that you can add the ash tones and then finish back at a level six. But this way you are left with cool ash pigments all right. So i feel like with those three scenarios we're hitting the three major hair issues. So hopefully, if you have been coloring your hair, whether at a salon or at home - and you can't seem to achieve the hair color that you are after - hopefully, these three scenarios have kind of hit close to home in one way or another. And hopefully you are better able to understand why you haven't gotten there and now what you actually need to get there all right guys. That is it. Hopefully that was helpful if there are other hair color situations that you would like me to dive a little deeper and kind of a dissect for you. Please leave them down below and in next week's video. I'M choosing my subscribers questions that you guys leave me in the comments and i'm dedicating that video to answering those questions and after that i'm going to be bringing you a hair transformation. I feel like it's time. It'S been a while, since i've done that i'm going to be taking off my extensions coloring, my hair and sharing the whole process with you, so definitely stick around for that all right guys. Thank you! So much for tuning in i love you guys and i'll see you in the next one bye guys

Sweep Sings: Love your videos! This was super helpful. I have an issue that I never see much info on. I have hair that is super grey/white at the from but dark at the back (about a level 6) . My hair is currently bleached to level 9/10 (toned with a champagne/pearl toner). My hair feels super damaged these days so how do I transition to something less damaging. What kind of colour should I go if I’m kind of a zebra? white at front/ dark at the back. Would love to see a video about us greying folks xxx Thanks for sharing your wisdom and beauty. Stay safe and healthy

megan lash: I always learn something from your videos, thank you. I seem to be in two of your situations mentioned, covering gray and wanting to be a 6/7 ashy color. I am naturally a level 6/7 and am about 50% gray. Every color I have used (home or salon) always looks orangey. After watching this, I am thinking that I should bleach my roots and then tone down. What should I use as a toner?

Kate Ostreicher: this is so helpful! love how you explained everything, brings me back to my color theory class in design school <3

Deborah-AWoman'sTouchDIYs: Wow your explanation on how colour works using the paper and hi-lighter example just made Everything click! Lol That makes SO much sense!!! You’re the best Sylvia! Thank you for keeping on with your channel especially since we’re all trying to educate ourselves on how to do our own and our kids and hubbies hair lately lol Not only that, but I jumped on the covid crazy hair wagon and feeling full of regrets sometimes lol Thx for helping me figure out how to work with what I got!! Ps. I’d love to see a video from you on temp colours and how to manage and upkeep, changing colours or removing then how to put a normal hair colour back on too! ;) hehe

Heather: I watched this, hoping that you would cover the issue that I have, right now. My hair has always been predominantly blonde highlights on a natural mousy base. As I started getting grey roots 5 years ago and did not want to embrace the grey, I started having a dark permanent colour (Wella Illumina 7) on my roots and pulled through in some areas to break up the blonde and give more of a balayage look. This last colour I had, 4 weeks ago, was awful. My hairdresser was off sick and without checking with me, they had me booked in with a more junior colour technician. She was really nice but unfortunately got it very wrong. She mixed 7 and 8 which has given a too dark, but warm glow. She also did not do more blonde highlights even though I had booked in for those too. So I left with really dark hair (thumbnail photo shows) and I hate it. I have so far been washing with head and shoulders which has rinsed some of it out but that's all I can do there. I now realise that I need to lift it in some way. I would not go back to that salon as I now live 200 miles away and frankly I can't afford yet to spend more money, or risk a new salon. I need to get my regrowth to a lighter and more neutral shade. If I use something like a 7/69 with 30 developer, will this lift the base and knock out the warm/dark base a bit? Grateful for any tips/help. x

xteen6teen: Wow! That was extremely helpful! Thank you for this video! It explains so much about what I’m doing wrong and how to fix it.

Jadorelamode Paris: You are a true gift to the hair universe. Thank you, thank you, thank you.

Melissa Redmond: This is a fantastic explanation! You always explain things in ways that truly make sense. You are so awesome! Thank you for all your time and sharing your wisdom!

Joan Gentile: Great video, Sylvia!! Thank you for sharing with us!!

alwayzjello: I feel so completely robbed by my hair colorist. I went in to bleach my hair so that I could dye it a fun color on top. I expected that it would take at least two sessions. I got recommendations for this salon, so I went there. She doubled bleached my dyed black hair to get it light enough. I blindly trusted her. I came out of there with new bangs that I didn't want because there was breakage from the bleach. I still continuously see little hairs, which means that it's still breaking 6 weeks later. Instead of doing my research properly, I paid someone hundreds of dollars to be the expert so that I didn't have to do too much research. I figured she knew what she was doing. I thought that I would have to come in more than once, but I was like, she's the expert... I'm beyond disappointed because I've been wanting a fun color in my hair for YEARS. And I'm out almost $500 plus damage to my hair, plus breakage and new baby bangs. I wish I had seen this video ahead of time and insisted on multiple visits. Or gone do a different colorist completely.

Tracey Lynn: Another great video! Always so informative. The next two videos sound awesome too! I can’t wait Have you tried the new acidic bonding concentrate line from Redken yet? I got all three and love it! I would like to hear what you think about it, and if it really heals the hair over time. Oh, I’m also wondering .. are you doing anyone’s hair now a days, or just the virtual consultations?

Lone Traveller: Hi Silvia, love your channel! It's really informing. Can you do some more videos on men's colour please. I'm aging and my hair is healthy but I just want to cover the greys. I'm a base level 6 so I bought Wella 6NN and 6NA to mix with 20 Vol developer. Followed the instructions and it came out a dark brown with warm orange tones. Can anyone help a poor Scots man soul and suggest how to get rid of these tones. I just wait plain boring light/medium brown hair Do I need to buy a Toner and what colour? It's all so confusing. HELP ANYONE!! Still glad I didn't buy buy Men's boxed dye.

lisap3.2: Wow- I've learned so much watching your videos over and over- I'm *almost* ready to take on my previously professionally highlighted/lowlighted hair (last done in July) which now has my box dyed (now brass/orange-ish) long roots and gray/level 6 fresh 3/4" roots. A lot going on! but I I want to try to balayage with natural 6 root blend/gray cover and shadow. I've watched so many of your videos and will try using esalon root permanent color and their lightening kit. If doing my own, which brand permanent color and toner should I use that's available to at-home quarantined armature styliststs?

Angeline Biswas: I would love to see you actually doing hair on clients! I love watching other stylists doing those videos. I feel like those kinds are literally the best education. This video was great tho btw

thesabrinagarcia: This was great! Thanks for clarifying level 6 hair to go ashier!

Karen Marie Arruda: Love all your suggestions and guidance! Thank you!

Shaundra Andress: Hey Elle, would you do a video series sometime...specifically on highlighted/bleached curly hair? toning...best cuts/styles...products for styling/protecting/washing/reviving...recommended combs/brushes/styling tools?

Aldijana: Understanding basic theory of how toners work: Look at a color wheel. You will notice these colors across from each other: Purple across from Yellow (blonde undertone)..... Green across from Red (brunette undertone).... Blue across from Orange (self-explanatory)..... Those colors cancel each other out.

Whittney Jensen: I've been doing hair for awhile, never can stop learning, love your videos I am lisenced, so color is not my specialty but im starting to rock it like everything else. I do have a question about being ash. so not wanting to go lighter, would I need to go two levels darker or just one?

April Marie Tucker: I always learn so much everytime I watch your videos,Silvia! I wish I would of seen your links here before I bought all my products because I just bleached my burgundy red ombre hair... I only bleached it once but I used colour off first. I used Schwarzkopf BlondMe (I recommend anyone reading this purchase Schwarzkopf BlondMe it's the best & there's a link in the description of this video for everything pretty much I used) after that & then because I still had a little red left I used Schwarzkopf highlift 12-11 & I did a root melt with dark ash blonde. It turned out really good I didn't even need to tone it & my hair looked healthier than before I started surprisingly. I did add Olaplex to both the colour off & the blondeme bleach & I used 20 volume and when I mixed the volume because my hair was already so light from the colour off instead of adding 2 parts of volume I added 2 and a half with the olaplex. But my hair was already an 8 and even a 10 in some spots cause I had an ombre with light ends. I was focusing on the stubborn red at the top which I was kind of worried might not come out cause my hair is so porous. I left everything in a long time to process & used a hair dryer bonnet that I got on Amazon. I used to always go to the salon but I suffered a spinal cord injury on my neck & I have alot of spine issues along with Lupus. So it's really hard for me to sit in a chair for hours let alone have a mask on the whole time. I'd rather do it myself & take my time at home it's so much easier plus I feel like my hair gets less damaged cause I can really baby my hair when I'm doing it. BTW Silvia great video as usual and thank you for sharing Bondiboost on Instagram. I ordered the blonde baby trio & Repair Repair set. Great products! ❤️

Heather Boyd: Question, how long do you let the toner process before applying to your hair?

Gaby Irene: This is hands-down your most helpful video!!!! Thank you so so much !

Savannah Ortiz: Love your contentplease keep it up! And yes the maskne is REAL for me too

Minaxi: You explain things so well. Thank you!

leon mar: Hello ,Thank you so much for your videos because I learned many things and I recovered a little of the health of my hair. I have an important question, I have California highlights in my hair (the root with my natural color and begins with tone 7-8 and at the end a 9 I always look for an ashy tone) but I don't know how to do with the toner shampoo, because I have a toner shampoo and mask for brunettes (pravana) and a redken mask for blonde hair, but i dont us it bcause i dont no what to do ,please un beso from spain

Terra Spickerman: What level peroxide do you recommend for lifting a warm light drown to allow the ash tones to absorb? Is 20 right?

Hailey Cooper: My hairdresser dyes my roots level 5 with 20 vol 3 times a year. She had done the full head level 5/0 a year ago but i prefered it as it faded and looked lighter than my roots. I said this too her but i said i think it needs a refresh as its looking a bit red. She had used perm 5/0 on my roots for 20mins the perm 5/0 on my mid length ends for another 20 mins. Now my ends look black. Next year when i need it re doing what should i ask for?

Natalie Sip: I cured my mask acne but ceasing the use of foundation. I only use a tiny bit in my nose, concealing my eye area and then I add blush, eye makeup and so on. Best of luck if you decide to try this.

Trin Murray: What kind of toners do you recommend that are less damaging?

Lindsey Serpe: You ma’am are amazing! Live that you share so much functional hair knowledge!

Gina H: Very helpful! Thank you!☺️

claudia davies: I'm rapt to find you, thanks for your explanation! Is hair colour stripping any sort of option? I'm trying to get rid of dark brown hair colouring to get closer to my now fairly grey hair and my hair is quite fragile and bleach may not be an option. Thanks so much for your videos!

Aloha Aloha: Can I use high lift product to achieve the same on my bleached level 7 orange hair to ashy tone ? such as igora royal 9-1 ash. I’m hoping using one step to lift and tone simultaneously. Thank you- Awesome video as always!

Desiree Williams: I just want to say thank you. Your videos have been SOOOOO helpful. I was just wondering how you lighten from a 6 to an 8.

Sheri Soltes: Beautifully explained.

Denise lubken: Hey Silvia! Was wondering your opinion about using the new Redken acid shampoo and treatments while having extensions in? Will it be safe for them?

Mary Nemec: I love your hair! I wish I could get by hair done by you! Amazing! Love

s mmg: Such an informative video! Thank you!!

Janet's Planet: Acne or no acne you are radiant!!!

Amber Watts: Hoping you see this and respond. I have my license, but I got out of the industry and its been a couple years. My BFs mom has heavy grey roots. She has been box dying. I have been using 6NBR from Redken. Her roots take weird and then a few washes later it matches the rest of her hair color. Her minds to ends need a refresh and I can use the shades EQ, but I am afraid of how it will turn out. Should I use another 6NBR in shades? I have to look at the line to see what they have. Can I not use the cover fusion of redken for the mids to ends? Roots first and then come back for mids to ends?

Amanda Serrato: Thank you for posting this! Very helpful!

Jackie Camilleri: Hi Elle thank you for all your tips... this is a tip thats helped me with maskne try spraying your mask with rubbing alchohol let dry and voila hope it helps I carry spray bottle with me to work

JOJO JO: Great and informative !! How can I safely brighten/lighten the level of my previously lightened blonde mids and ends ( I have a sombre ) Thanks Beautiful lady <3

Rose Cowan: My daughter tried to lighten my hair. First she used blue bleach from Sally’s beauty supply. Turned my hair like a redhead orange! So then we used the color charm 9A light Ash. My hair turned more orange. I found your YouTube channel and you suggested going one color darker. So I purchased 8A/740.5 light ash blond. Using 20 volume. Well the top of my hair still has orange a lighter orange color. The lower part is darker but has a light orange. What would you suggest?

snow40741: Thank you for this video..to touch up my roots with a box color..it has 2 ozs of color and 2 ozs of developer how much of the 20 developer do I add? Thank you for pointing out about getting the neutral shade...I hope my roots look better and blends with the rest of my hair.

MrsBlue Sky: Thank you. Well explained. Good woman!

Nayelie Cabanas: I bleached my hair two months ago and I have yellow orange hair and my roots are dark. Can I use a permanent color like a Golden extra light with 30 volume developer to cancel the orange parts? Would it work ?

Leslie Morales: Thank you for touching in on the gray

Debbie Spencer: I am a natural brown and my hairdresser has gotten me to a silver ash with black roots. However we keep getting a rusty color between the silver and the black. How can we get rid of the rusty line of color between the two colors? My hairdresser says there is nothing we can do about the rusty part between the two.

Cinderfire: I use 4nn and 5nn on roots. Then I use a 5n toner after that. Awesome shine

Angela: I have level 5 and 6 hair that hasn't ever been dyed. To much maintenance.. now I'm in my 40s and beginning to see some grey stands. I've been pulling them out, and honestly my naturally hair has streaks that make it not too noticable, but I would like to keep my hair basically the same color and have a wash in shampoo/dye that just covers the grey. Maybe I can wash it in in the shower every two weeks or so. Is there anything like that? I thought I saw a video of wash in color that you put out a while back, but can't find it. Thanks!

Abby S: Can you recommend a good toner for level 7 hair color? I need to add shine and cancel brassy tones

Sandra Paola: Thank you so much that helped a lot. It was really a good explanation

S G: Do you have any videos on dark brown hair issues, like gray, dry ends+ oily roots, lifeless hair?

Denise Lamy-Grosteffon: Love your content, Thank you

Popy Barua: I wish I could share this post with moron clients those don't wanna understand WHY we need to Lift and tone

Alicja M: My question would be this: if you have a few inches regrowth of brown hair level 4-5 neutral to ashy and have lightened the rest to a level 8 copper and are looking to go back natural what 2 formulas will be needed? I understand that i will need permanent formula for the roots for the grey hair i have (10% at this point maybe) and a semi for the rest. My concern in the past has been the severe line of demarcation at the root because the semi colour fades out and you can see the line after some washes

Suzette Flores: Is it possible to cover grays with a demi or semi-permanent color so they look like highlights?

positive life: What would be the color to cover grey hair when you have level 2 hair or level 3 hair ??

Bay area Babe: Very informative thank you

Angie Castillo: Can you do toner with a #10 developer (for less damage)

Lori Risley: What about this scenario?... I am HALF asian/HALF caucasion. My natural color is basically a soft medium'ish to dark slightly ash brown (not BLACK). i'd say maybe a shade or 2 lighter than black. I am 44 and starting to get greys. So been trying to get that taken care of. But ughhhh,,, Everytime I get my hair colored to try and stay as close to my natural color,,, it ends up JET BLACK. So frustrating. Wether i've gotten it done at the salon or done it myself... ALWAYS ENDS UP BEING VIBRANT JET BLACK. This last time i went to the salon to get my style changed (had an old grown out balayage, and grown out too long. I was way over due.) they did a cute cut, color corrected all of the remaining light pieces and then went over it with a 5 or 6 BP i think it was (i preferred the NA used prior though). Still turned out JET BLack. Im sad.... LOL Although after time and washing it does end up pretty close to my natural. but the first few months its like wheeeeewwww chilllleeeee.

clara kim: hello! I have a question, if anyone can help me that'd be great! i got a balayage last week and although i love the results, the lady left a dark patchy spot in the front ends of my hair (which i found later at home). i texted her to see what it was and how i can remove it, she said it's toner so just wash a few times with purple shampoo and it'll come off. i've washed it twice with purple shampoo now but it still looks the same. what can i do to speed up the process?

All Lies BStrong: Hi what pattern should I place my highlights as a touch up in between appts if when I pull my hair back since when I pull my hair back more often now it’s dark and when it’s down it’s light but, needs a touch up til I get an appt. Thanks

Sophie xo: What colour do you use to lowlight your own hair it’s lovely

Krista Drummond: What about if you have bleached your hair very bright but the ends are not quite as bright as the midsection. I want to brighten my ends without doing much damage. Also any tips for touching up roots with bleach!

Lynda Bales: thanks love your videos very helpful

xTriinuux: I'm seeing my hairdresser in two months but I have completely no idea what I want this time Maybe some inspirations for hairstyles in 2021? Please do that ❤️

Rose Gold: Can anyone recommend a good styling mousse with HOLD for blondes ? I have one but it seems to make my blonde look darker

Sara Silveira: So basically, could it also be that the reason why my purple shampoo doesn't seem work is because I'm a "warm" level 6 at bas?e.. So the way for me to get to an ashy tone is to bleach more first?

Blanca Vargas: Can you recommend developers that don’t smell bad. I know most do but one that smells the least. With having to dye my hair at home I don’t want a lingering smell around too much because of my little one

leaxy: My virgin natural hair (level 6) and fresh cut is no where near the light blond I want after 2 Session. I DON'T UNDERSTAND WHY!

Norma Martin: So how do you lift your hair to 2 lift to get an ash color to blend with gray hair. Thanks

V M: Love this!!!!

Sugar Cookies: I’m excited for your transformation!!

שיפרה אשכנזי: I love your video. I will lovet to get your opinion Let say I'm an 5 redish and want to get 6 ash what color should i use?

Joyce Jardim: I understand it perfectly but I hate professionals that don't do what you want. They say yes, go at the back and mix what want. I hate that.

Diana Corado: How do I tone my hair ends at home?

zina ghadir: Hi how do you avoid green tones when you apply ash onto stripped yellow orange hair please

Maria Genovese: Great video. Good information. So excited to you your new hair! You're so pretty.,

jade: I wish she said which developer she would have recommended for that level 5

Jhonier Batista: I just wandering what kind of purple shampoo I can use for my hair I did ash blonde on my base colour

Muriel Gibson: Thanks a lot

Alicia Garcia: Love your videos!!!!! Ohmygosh I can't wait to see you!!!!

Tanya Donovan: I wished so much you could be the one to color/fix my hair . There isn’t a hairdresser around me that knows how to help me with my hair . Ugh ‍♀️ so frustrating ! I feel it would be rude to show them this video right ?!? Lol Please come to Vermont ! You can stay at the hotel I work . I’m the executive housekeeper there

Bay area Babe: You should layer your extensions better so they blend with your real hair up top. You can tell they are extensions bc it’s not blended. Beautiful color though.

Lindsey Peterson: Love your nails!!! Would love to know what your do or get

EM F: The beauty store said: "purple shampoo made for (blonde hair)", said it works just as good on (brownish/auburn hair) that will (remove yellowish goldish white hair). Is that true or false? For use on Natural non color auburn/ brownish hair.?????And will it brighten up the white hair???

Kavita Naik: I working in dubai we mostly use other brands not Redken color so when toners uses like p,G I found difficult

k B: you look lovely, this makeup is very flattering on you :)

Charlene Mcaleer: Hi can i ask if you use extentions your hair is to die for xx

Maire Farley: Letting hair go grey. Previously dyed blonde. Was wondering is there any non bleach product to tone demarcation line please

channel زهرة المغرب: شكرا كثير على نصائح

kittee grande: so i used to have curly hair but i had bleached my hair for like a year and a half and my curls were gone i stopped bleaching it and it’s all been cut out now but there’s not curls anymore :( can you permanently mess it up? please someone respond

vaandrea104: What do you mean by applying a toner to the rest, what kind of toner is it

Glory: I am 90% grey and did a touch with 1 1/2 oz. of 5n and 1 oz of 6n and my roots look orangey and I used 20 peroxide .... what should I do

Bé Em: Do you have a video how to self cut curtain bangs?

Lynn Rose: Your hair is so pretty. :)
