Caring for Curly and Wavy Wigs

Who doesn’t want perfect waves or ringlet curls in all types of weather?! Humid and hot? Cold and dry? Your waves and curls are nearly weatherproof! Synthetic wavy and curly wigs have a baked-in curl pattern to give you that effortless look every time. But, keep in mind that if you wear a curly or wavy wig and want to keep those curls beautiful as long as possible, you must care for them properly. With a few care products and a little love, you will have the flawless hair you’ve always wanted. Watch the video at the end for visual help!

Brushing Curly Wigs

First and foremost, you need to put away your standard paddle brushes. A brush causes frizz and can make it hard to restore your curls. We recommend using only a wide-tooth comb on these types of wigs. If you find the curls on your synthetic wig don’t look like they used to, you can try restoring your curls. This process can be time-intensive, so make sure to set aside the time.

Wig Comb

Detangling Curly Wigs

Using a wide-tooth comb to section off the hair. Mist each section lightly with a conditioning spray before you detangle. Make sure to use products formulated for synthetic wigs for easy detangling such as the Leave-in Conditioner by BeautiMark. The hydration will reawaken your locks and give the fibers moisture without the weight. Once the hair is slightly damp with the leave-in conditioner, gently detangle each section using the comb.

Bonus Tip: Smooth Detangler

During the detangling process, you may notice that some parts are harder to detangle using a gentle method. For tough tangles, use the Smooth Detangler by BeautiMark. Less is more with this detangler, so shake well and start with a small amount initially. You’ll see that this product works wonders on synthetic and heat-friendly synthetic hair, and it won’t leave behind an oily residue.

Restoring Curls

Once your wig is tangle-free, it’s time to restore your curls. Using your fingers, twist each curl or wave and let it bounce back into shape. If your wig has small ringlets, you’ll have to work with smaller sections. If you are looking for a new look, go for bigger sections of hair.

Reshaping Curly and Wavy Wigs

If, after a finger twist, the wave or curl does not bounce back to its original shape, you may be a little turned around! The curl might actually twist in a different direction. Still using your fingers, twist the curl in the opposite direction and see if that gets the correct curl. You will need to continue this routine throughout the entire wig to return to its original curl or wave pattern.

Bonus Tip: Velvet Spray Gel

We recommend using the Velvet Spray Gel by BeautiMark before using hairspray to set the style for extra hold. This spray gel can be used on wet or dry hair, depending on how much hold you’d like. When the fibers are still damp from the Leave-in Conditioner after detangling, spritz a small amount of product and massage it into your hands. Apply throughout the curls and waves to add more staying power. When the Velvet Spray Gel is used when the hair is dry, the product will softly define the waves or curls. It will also tame flyaways and can be used to sweep the curls off the face.

Maintaining Curly Wigs

After all that work, you will want to maintain the style you achieved. Spray the Flex-Hold Hairspray by BeautiMark over the entire wig. This spray is perfect for polishing waves without leaving behind a sticky or crunchy residue. Next, add a hairnet over the style. Hopefully, you saved the net that originally came with your wig. If not, a replacement hairnet will do. Carefully slip the hairnet over the wig so that the net will maintain and hold the curls you just restored in place. The net should stay on until you are ready to wear the wig again. You won’t have to repeat this process often, but it can help to lengthen the lifespan of your wavy or curly wig’s lifetime.

Bonus Tip: Shaping Creme

After restoring your barely-there wave or fully ringlet curls, you may want to add some finishing touches. We recommend the Shaping Creme by BeautiMark to softly sculpt the texture and shape. Once your wig is on, use a small amount of the cream to define and set the hair part and effortlessly tame flyaways. Watch the video below for visual help!
