In African American neighborhoods in Washington, DC there are African American owned and operated beauty salons on nearly every corner. In these neighborhoods, Koreans own and operate ethnic hair care and beauty supply stores. Why are African Americans disenfranchised when it comes to the hair care market? This story may give you some insight on the issue.
In 1905, madam CJ Walker invented hair care products for african-american women. She sold her products door-to-door and became a self-made millionaire today. Koreans dominate the ethnic hair care and beauty supply business in Washington DC. Where african-americans are the largest consumers of haircare products. There are few Beauty Supply businesses owned by people of color, the Korean and Asian ancestors that have passed down and started with dry cleaners and certain services that were in the african-american community that turned into wig making and they had access to to hair from South Korea. So within the Washington DC region, those particular they kept the ownership and it transferred into the beauty, supply industry. They pooled their money and all the stores shipping, where we don't have that kind of capital to purchase that that volume that they do. The deadly Beauty College. In Washington DC has its own line of haircare products, that is in partnership with the cosmetologist and anything that affects the cosmetologist affects daily products. We do not sell our product to Beauty Supply places that we sell the front of directed to the cosmetologist action. Beauty Supply an african-american owned and operated business has serviced, beauty, salons and consumers in the DC area for 30 years. I think it's very important for black people to invest and own their own businesses, for the simple fact that we are the main connoisseurs when it comes to hair care and hair products while Koreans dominate the ethnic beauty supply business. Edward Taub: There are many challenges to owning a business. But if you're willing to risk your own money, work long hours, have no guarantee of success, provide extra-special service to customers, and find honest employees who won't steal from you, you can do it. Good luck to all!
X: Nice video. However, at 0:24 do not state terminologies such as 'people of colour' when referring to Blacks -- just state 'Black'. Koreans also count as a people of colour.
CHARLES LYLES: Two reasons why: 1. Not enough black entrepreneurship or customers that will support. 2. Korean companies have an iron grip on manufacturing and distribution and will only sell to other koreans companies thus making it hard for blacks to snag supply.
