Night Hair Routines That Will Grow Your Hair | Type 4 Hair

Showing examples of nighttime hair routines that promote growth (length retention) in type 4 hair. Also, tips on how to protect and nurture your edges (hairline) at night so they grow and don’t thin.

This year I had an epiphany. I put a lot of value in the healthy hair routine of my whole head...except my hairline. Question. Why is it that in the natural hair community we speak so heavily of sealing our edges with oil over and over again, but promote water for moisture on the rest of our heads? Sure, oils are fantastic. Depending on the oil your hair can receive a ton of nourishment and healing benefits. Oil keeps the hair malleable so that the hair doesn’t break...but sometimes our edges are a little thirsty.

Alright, I’m going to share some different ways to protect your hair and edges in this video so I can help you out!

Well, hello, ladies and gentlemen, all right, one of the biggest mistakes that i made in my hair care routine was well. I have three mistakes actually, so let me go down the little list all right. The first mistake is not putting enough stock value and investment. In my nighttime care routine, i think especially on blogs and youtube. We talk so much about what to do to like moisturize our hair throughout the day, how to style our hair, how to get long, hair, etc, etc. But a lot of times we failed to talk about the equal balance or the equal importance in a nighttime routine. So i did not have enough value. I did not place enough value in my nighttime routine. The second mistake i did was treating my edges not as well as i treat the rest of my hair. What do i mean by this? I always talk about moisture right. We know that type 4 hair needs a lot of moisture. We need water. I always talk about how, when you're moisturizing your hair, the first step is to add water. Why don't we talk about that for our edges? Now i know i am not the only one in the world who's gon na mention this, but i feel like in the natural hair community we put so much stock in serums and pills and sealing with oils, castor oil, jamaican castor. You know jamaican black, castor, oil and and and jojoba oils and argon oils and olive oils, and all these different kinds of oils that we're constantly talking about putting them on our edges - and you know oreos are great okay, they for me, they maintain a sense of Malleability of the hair, so it does cause less breakage, however, way to water, and my third mistake is not paying attention to the physical trauma that i'm putting on my edges. All right is there something that i'm doing to my hair? Is there any kind of physical trauma to my hairline that is preventing the length retention, and then i had a look at my body. My bonnet was way too tight. You guys i needed to keep it on my head, but during the night it would slide up and then eventually over time it would cause breakage all right now i started losing my edges right after i delivered my sun right, there's nothing! I can do about that. My edges just started falling out. It is pretty natural with women who experience pregnancy and delivery. It just you know, there's nothing i can do about that, but then, with the stress and the not sleeping and the sort of getting used to my routine as a mother and a wife, i pretty much lost control of my edges and i lost the ability to Think about what i was doing to my hair in a critical sense from an outsider's point of view, and so i realized those three things i don't have enough water. I didn't put enough value or equal value on my nighttime routine and my bonnet was too tight. I was having way too much physical trauma on my edges, so in this video i definitely want to talk about all of the different nighttime routines that i have the most consistent ones that i have and why it's important and the reason why it's important is because Your body, when you're sleeping through the pituitary gland, it releases a growth hormone that aids in growth, but also restoration of your body. So while you're sleeping your body is repairing itself, so essentially whatever you do during the day and at night, will either aid in that process or take away from that process. So let's talk about tools, get yourself a water bottle. You guys a water bottle is the easiest way that i found to maintain the moisture levels of my hair. So at night time i will spray water on my edges. I will put a serum on and then seal with an oil if i find that it's necessary. So a water bottle is going to be your best friend, because that means that you can add that water anywhere now, if you don't, have a water bottle. Obviously, you can use your sink water and sort of put it on your edges and then carry out with the rest of your routine. I mentioned that my bonnet was giving me some trouble, so my solve for not wearing a bonnet anymore. Yes, i stopped wearing bonnets. Is to get a satin pillowcase. This is something that i have known about for years and just never invested in one. You can use silk, you can use satin and satin, i believe, is really nice, because it helps your hair sort of glide off of the fabric. It'S not, it doesn't soak up as much oil and whatnot as like a cotton pillowcase would. But silk is actually the best to be honest: silk pillowcases, they're natural fibers. They do not dry out the hair they're, also a little bit more on the pricey side. I have also adopted going back to my scarf. This is a scarf that i have it's really simple. It'S more of a satin scarf um. It doesn't pull on my edges. I make sure when i wrap my hair, i actually put the scarf a little bit lower here and then i'll go ahead and go to bed. So what that allows my hair to do since it is low porosity, and it takes a very long time to dry - is i will um, get a lot more airflow having just a scarf on it's gentler on my edges and then my satin pillowcase will help me With the rest of the lengths of my hair, now, what i do for my nighttime routine really has to do with the results that i want for the next day and where my moisture routine is now. I have a whole video on how to moisturize type 4 hair. I will link it here. I will try to link it in the description box as well, but essentially i moisturize re-moisturize, my hair after styling at least twice a week now. What that means is that i will take water moisturize. I will put my style on and i will top it with an oil and then you know today, like today i had braids. I had my hair braided up before i went to bed. I put some perm rods on the end and i sort of went to bed that way and that had allowed me to have the hairstyle that i wanted today. So it's in combination right. If i know i need to sort of re-moisturize my hair and i want a specific style, then i will do that twice a week all right now, some weeks, that's just way too much manipulation. I would rather not style my hair twice a week uh. So what i will do is do something like the pineapple method right, it's which you kind of take all of your hair. You put it up, you can put like a band or a scarf like very, very gently around the hair, so that all of your hair is kind of at the top of your head, put a scarf on to protect your edges and then go to bed. Of course, the top of your hair is going to be exposed, but that is what the satin pillow case is. So i really like the pineapple method, mainly for um wash and gos or hairstyles, in which i want my hair to remain loose, and i don't want to do too much like i might pineapple tonight, because i kind of want this afro look to continue throughout the Week, but i still probably like put a little bit of moisturizer and oil like in the morning and the last night time routine that i typically do is banding. I only use this when i really want to stretch out my hair. I have done sort of like a version of banding with wire and my hair, and that created this really elongated sort of crimpy um hairstyle that i really really liked, but also i'll use banding with wash and goes right. I want my hair to have this wash and go look, but i really want to stretch out the strands, so i will put scrunchies on the lengths of my hair cover with a scarf and then go to bed. So i wanted to keep this. You know pretty chill pretty simple, because i just want you guys to know you don't have to do the most with your hair and a lot of times. You know, unless i'm going for a very specific style by the end of the week and i'm not willing to use heat, then i will use a lot of these methods in order to elongate my styles and cause less manipulation throughout the week. It also needs to be simple, because you need this to fit into your lifestyle. Honestly, there used to be a website called keep a simple sista, and i agree with that: tracy had it right, you know, keep it as simple as you possibly can, and if you're wearing a protective style moisturize the edges spray, a little water you know get in The shower, let that steam penetrate your hair so that you're still getting that moisture and then wrap it with your scarf or your bonnet, whatever you're comfortable with, like i make these videos so that you guys can get more and more ideas on what to do with Your hair and what works for you? Okay, i'm done i'm gon na post, my hair regimen right here now i have the hair regimen playlist so that you guys can sort of fill in the gaps right. I'M making these videos to fill in the gaps of my routine so check that out there and down here, you can check out my wash and go playlist because that's always really fun all right. I love you all and i'll talk to you later.

miniminott48: I can't believe the four braids with perm rods at the ends produced this gorgeous style. You can do so much with long, thick hair.

Sable 711: Happy Thanksgiving Latoya and everyone and thanks for reminding me to take care of my edges. Though I use oil, didn't think about putting water on the edges also! :-)

Neosoul_prima: Definitely using a water based moisturizing spray, rose water, aloe juice, or water lol then sealing with and oil on your scalp, edges, and nape is the goat! I do this every 2-3 days to keep the scalp lubricated, and it’s definitely changed so many things! Our scalp needs way more moisture than we realize.

Chelsea Erem: I made the same realization about my bonnet after my edges starting thinning. Now I sleep with a satin scarf and a satin pillowcase, and I only use bonnets that are lined with satin all around the cap AND the band.

Black Feline: I love your videos. I have 4C hair but for the longest time I've been afraid to sport my hair. I'm not used to the shrinkage look but I love when my hair is stretched (blow dryer). My hair has grown alot this year so I'm hoping to have super thick shoulder length hair like yours

SHE McG: ✨ Super suggestions about moisturizing the edges with ‘da water’! So simple... should be obvious ordinarily, but definitely a stroke of genius on your part for articulating it!! ‍ Thank you sooo much and may you and your family be well.

Raquel Bryant: I love my silk pillowcases! They sleep cooler than satin and they don't dry out as much moisture from the hair as satin.

Sandra Barrett: Laying edges too often will destroy it.

Tiana Nadirah: Hey Latoya!! I love your videos & personality Just FYI do some research into the ingredients of the biotin hair serum, it has Diazolidinyl urea in it, which is a carcinogenic( cancer causing ingredient releaser).

Jazmynn Montanez: I was LITERALLY look for night time routines last night. My hair is telling me that what I am doing is WRONG lol. I needed this.

Drew Baker: I really like this video (ok, no surprise). I'm recently focusing on nighttime routines, especially for 1. Twist Outs, and 2. Wash and Go's (haven't tried yet but getting ready. Just got remainder of relaxer cut from my hair last weekend, so....!) Perhaps you can do a few updated nighttime routine videos for us?

Jermaine Au Natural: The night routine is very important so great share! Listen sometimes I will actually my bonnet down over my eyes so the sun won’t wake me up in the mornin but my hair is fully covered I alter between scarf or bonnet depending on the style of my hair and what I want it to do as the week goes. I was rollin at Where da wader

K: I love your videos they are always so informative. Thanks for always keeping it real.

Isa Virtual: Preach! I only noticed that I was destroying my edges when they were almost gone I was laying down my edges a lot, wearing tight hairstyles too often and my bonnet was way too tight now they are coming back but a sis is struggling.

Curated Coils & Culture, By Dr.SheCole: Awesome, thanks for the tips. Hair goals. I had to cut sooo many split ends. Ugh.

hureine point-dujour: This hairstyle is beautiful! We need to see a step by step

Mimi J501: Videos of simple techniques are appreciated. You are correct. Most videos never demonstrate the nighttime routine for maintenance during the week.

Rhonda Fore: Great nighttime routine tips. I definitely been paying more attention to my nighttime routine. As for that pineapple method , I use my whole bonnet for that and all nighttime hair regimens. Does keep it simple Sista still exists?

BrokeGirl Magic: Thanks for the video. My edges were sore and thin despite the fact I don't wear weaves, braids or wigs. It was the bonnet, back to a scarf, thanks for the help

shamrocks: Stunning. Hair looks healthy! Great advice. I’ve been using a homemade castor oil mix on my edges too, it’s been softening them. I have really course strands. Side note: what happened to Tracey? You just made me realise she’s not been on. Or is it the algorithm? x

LaShumbra Bates: Thanks for this. It was seriously needed. Would've watched on Thanksgiving, but it was a mad house over here.

DeChanel Grant: Here channel is getting so large im happy for her im 12 and i got some of inspiration from her to go natural

Drew Baker: Lord, Thank You for Latoya. Amen.‍♀️

olivia kouadio: Hey Latoya, since you talk about simplicity, I think you would really enjoy the insight of @iamblackgirlcurls. They are 2 professional hairstylists who recommend focusing on ones lifestyle and style preference when taking care of ones hair. They give great practical advice and focus on simplicity because our hair doesn't have to be (isn't) difficult or complicated. I hope you check them out.

ReigningGlory: Instead of a bonnet or a tie scarf try a gator! Yeah I know that many use it to battle the pandemic HOWEVER I like to multitask! Slip it on, it doesn't smother your head and you don't have to tie that thang down.I love your regimen for pineapple , banding, and switching up 2 times of week. Heck other parts of the body would be made envious because of time consumed by messing with this garden of tresses on this head.LOL

Lillian Williams: Thanks for your video and love them all. Will be ordering a pillow case today.

Allimarie Wallace: Love you Toya & your enthusiasm on camera!

Apara: I LOVE your lipstick!!!! Such a great color.

brittany2192: omg you are so beautiful I am so glad I found your channel! I have so much to learn!

Mare Meets World: LaToya, you and your hair are beautiful per usual . What oil are you using in this video?! Would love to try it. Thanks!

Bj: I have enjoyed watching your videos today, learning something new and being reminded of some things I know, I shouldn't be doing

MsJayLSmith: Exactly 10 minutes!?! Nice... Happy Thanksgiving to your family!!

Sarab McCaskil: I'm here waiting for my turkey and your posting something that I've been searching for weeks! (It's like you knew what I needed!!!!!) Happy Thanksgiving!!

Keisha j: I think oil makes our hair water proof. It's like a barrier to moisturizer.

lady tell: I love "Where's Da Water?" You crack me up. Love this video!! You got me straight. Thanks sista!!

Gayle Brown: Thank you you know I enjoy you so much, my hair is short now but I still have to work at it also.

Nesha Christian-Hendrickson: You gave me so much information in this! I think my bonnet was too tight!

M. R.E.Banks: Please can you show how you did the stretched style with the scrunchies please . Thanks Love your vids

Frankie Wynder: Great information thanks

BandaQueen Love: The shirt and your hair looks so beautiful

eebony tv: Always looking gorgeous sis

Daf: I've followed you for a while and never seen you in weaves, wigs or artificial braids.... Does that mean that your main protective styling method consists of natural hairstyles? I love my hair... And wish that I could get away with artificial protective styling... But my hair by day 5,gets so unmanageable and I rarely have the energy to refresh my hair

Tima: I also almost went bald after delivery!!!

DebraFlower Floral Design: Great suggestions

Israeliana NG: That banding with wire was so cute

Sade Bailey: HOW LONG HAVE YOU BEEN NATURAL !!

Michelle Frazier: Gorg!! Great video!

Daniel Mullens2: Hey love the video

Yvonne Murphy: you look beautiful.. periodt.

KK.THE.KPOP.ADDICT: I you so much you're my idol ❤️ hope you reply.

Mercy Ndujilo: Geneticaly we have different hair growth...yours is fast dear

indria drayton: Love the top!!

Fateema Johnson: Love your video hope you are so goofy

Jauharah sassy: I put water on my edges ....now they not edges...it's hair...

Shen Dowe: damn I'm early again

soraya .e: Why do people complain about having 4c so much when you can literally just put 4 braids in your hair and walk out the house I’m convinced everyone wants to type 3. Little do they know I do the same routine on my child’s type 3 hair because children love to play and having it out is sometimes not worth it.
