5 Steps For Washing A Fibre Wig

1.

Gently remove any tangles from your fibre wig using a wide-toothed comb or wig brush. If you prefer, you could just use your fingers to smooth away any tangles. The best way to detangle the hair is to begin at the tips, combing downwards and then carefully work your way up to the roots, always using that same downwards motion.

TOP TIP: Use a comb or brush with rounded ends as this will cause less stress on the fibre hair.

2.

Fill your bowl or sink with warm water (but not too warm). Always read the instructions on your wig shampoo bottle, but you would normally use a cap full or a good splash of shampoo to swirl into the water until you have delightful shampoo/water mix. Then immerse the wig in the water, gently swirl, then let the wig soak for up to 5 minutes.

3.

Rinse the wig in tepid water until all of the shampoo is removed and the water runs clear. Take care to ensure the water flows in the same direction as the hair, from root to tip. Ensure you have removed all of the shampoo thoroughly, as a build-up of leftover shampoo can create a matted, greasy look (and no one wants that).

TOP TIP: Do not vigorously rub your wig during any stage of the washing process.

4.

After rinsing, it’s time to condition and make your wig silky and soft. In a sink or bowl, mix tepid water with a capful of balsam or wig conditioner and immerse the wig. Gently swirl and let the wig soak for up to 5-10 minutes. Follow the same rinsing process as shampooing if using a wig conditioner. If you’re using a balsam, do not rinse it out of the wig.

5.

Remove your wig from the water and place it in a towel. Gently pat out any excess water with a towel. Do not twist, rub or heavily brush the wig whilst wet. Gently comb into shape from crown to tips. Allow to air dry on a poly head or wig stand.

CONGRATULATIONS! You have successfully washed and conditioned your wig

Common Questions About Washing A Fibre Wig

Can I use a fabric conditioner on my wig?

Some people come to Simply Wigs and tell us that they have been told it is okay to wash their wigs with fairy liquid, baby shampoo, or even fabric conditioner. However, using these products will not give your wig the TLC it most definitely deserves, so we would advise you to put the fabric conditioner down.

Which product should I buy?

There are so many kinds of wig products available that it can be overwhelming when choosing the right one for you. Our best advice is to make sure you use wig care products that are specially designed for synthetic wigs to keep your wig looking its best. All of the wig shampoos, wig conditioners and wig balsams that we sell on our website have been tried and tested and, most importantly, given the ultimate sniff test! Our noses have been close to all our products’ lids to ensure that your wig will smell fresh and delectable and feel silky smooth after use. What do you do now? Simply take your pick!

Should I use a balsam or a conditioner?

You can decide if you want to use wig balsam or wig conditioner, or both. A rule of thumb we always go by at the Simply Wigs HQ is that you pour wig balsam into the water, and you spray wig conditioner as the last part of your cleaning process. The majority of the conditioners that we supply are not in liquid form but a spray, so looking after your wig or hairpiece usually just requires a simple spritz.

Always read the bottle instructions as some brands instruct that you spray onto damp wigs or hairpieces, whilst some brands instruct that you spray after the wig or hairpiece has naturally dried. Don’t restrict your conditioner just to after washing. You can also use it intermittently when you think that your look requires an extra beautifully soft boost. The Dimples Fibre Oil Conditioner is very popular, giving you a much-needed salon-style spruce up if you fancy a bit of pampering!

How do you wash a synthetic hair piece?

You’ll be glad to know that the process of how to wash synthetic hairpieces is much the same as washing your regular wig.

1. Gently brush your hairpiece to detangle strands.

2. Then, wet your hairpiece under a tap, ensuring that the water flows the same way as your hair and work your wig shampoo into the piece.

3. Repeat this process with a conditioner.

4. Finally, dry your synthetic hairpiece by dabbing it gently with a towel, and hang to dry overnight.

How often should I wash my fibre wig or hairpiece?

Now you know how to wash synthetic hairpieces, what about when to wash them? You do not need to wash your wig or hairpiece as often as you would your own hair. As an approximate guideline, we suggest washing after 10-12 wears. We usually say use your own judgement because no one knows your wig better than you.
