Tips for Managing Lockdown Hair

Caring for your hair during lockdown brings many questions. How much effort should I be putting into my hair? Does my lockdown hairstyle matter? The simple answer is, it's totally up to you!

Some people choose to embrace the nonchalance look of their lockdown hairstyle, and some may have attempted to be an at-home barber or hairdresser. On the other hand, others miss their beauty salon trips and are doing their best to replicate these gorgeous looks at ho,e. However you wish to approach your lockdown hair routine, there's no right or wrong method. Here are our top tips for caring and styling your hair to ensure you look and feel fabulous this lockdown.

5 Tips for Managing Lockdown Hair

1. Break down your routine

During lockdown your hair will thank you for taking things back to basics. Although you may not be leaving the house as frequently, it's important to keep up with your usual hair care routine to help prolong the life of your beautiful wig. A great way to maintain your gorgeous locks is to simplify your routine. For example, you could consider the following:

Think about how often you gently brush your hair or wig each day to prevent any tangles or pesky knots. It’s recommended to brush your hair twice a day; once in the mornings and just before you go to sleep.

Consider the methods you use to dry your hair, and if you have a human hair or heat resistant wig, make sure to use a heat protection spray before applying any heat.

And most importantly, are you using the right shampoo and conditioner on your wig? Using a shampoo and conditioner specifically formulated to delicately clean and replenish your wig will ensure your lockdown hairstyle stays looking beautiful!

2. Focus on the frizz

One way to ensure your lockdown hairstyle is cared for is to focus on the frizz. Natural hair tends to go frizzy when the hair is dry or is struggling to receive moisture from your scalp. Like your natural hair, human hair wigs tend to frizz in reaction to the weather and in climates of high humidity. On the other hand, synthetic wigs will frizz over time due to the nature of the hair fibres. We understand that it can be difficult to achieve sleek looking hair, however, our guide to defrizzing your wig offers the best tips to ensure your hair stays looking as fabulous as possible. The Ellen Wille anti static spray is a brilliant product that can be used on both human and synthetic hair during lockdown to make sure your wig stays looking soft and shiny.

Top tip: Did you know that tumble dryer sheets are a great way to defrizz your synthetic wig? Delicately bring the tumble dryer sheet down from your parting to the ends of your hair. Be sure to repeat this process all over for a defrizzed wig!

3. Don't be afraid to try new products

Before the current pandemic, you may have been comfortable repeatedly using the same hair care products. Everyone's hair is different, and a product that may do wonders for one person, may not be as effective for another. But, what better time to try out new styling products than in lockdown?

This is the perfect time to experiment with new styling methods and products. For instance, if your wig is looking a little dull, the human hair mask by Gisela Mayer is a great product to use when washing a synthetic or human hair wig. And with the potential for a holiday or a weekend away when lockdown restrictions ease, the Dimples wig care travel pack will be a great addition to your suitcase.

4. Embrace the DIY cut

By now, you may have taken the plunge and embraced the DIY lockdown hairstyle. If the DIY hair cut doesn't go to plan, you can blame lockdown for it; everyone will understand what you mean! If you aren't sure where to start, follow our step by step guide on how to cut your own hair.

We always recommend having a qualified stylist cut your wig, and hopefully when salons re-open you can leave your wigs in expert hands. However, if you're desperate to try out a new lockdown hairstyle, there's no harm in practising your skills on a wig that's old or past it's best. You can find out more about our best tips for cutting your wig over on our dedicated post. Remember that unlike natural hair, your wig won't grow back.

5.Focus on heatless methods

The benefit of the national restrictions and working from home means that you can spend more time on heatless lockdown hairstyles! Your natural hair, as well as your wig, will thank you for not applying heat as frequently to it. Although heat can help achieve quick results, it could also damage wig fibres if applied too often. Treat this lockdown as an opportunity to experiment with new heatless styles. Some people prefer to wear their wig whilst styling it, whereas others prefer to use a wig stand to view their hair from all angles. Simply cut the eyebrow out and peel off the transferable backing. Gorgeous lockdown eyebrows in no time at all. You can see for yourself how easy it is to apply these gorgeous and natural-looking false eyebrows in our YouTube video tutorials!

Our collection of transferable false eyebrows are available in a range of shapes, sizes and colours. You receive between 8-10 eyebrows in each order, and they're a very affordable option. If you don't know where to start, the Claudia eyebrow is a popular choice, and we also have a full guide to buying false eyebrows.

If you're looking to pluck your eyebrows in lockdown, you'll find the following tips useful:
1. Only pluck a few hairs at a time

Although we may find the determination to tweeze our eyebrows into a new style, more often than not, there comes an ‘oops' moment. It's best to pluck a few hairs at a time and only pluck from the bottom of your eyebrows. Be sure to take a step back to examine your work and continue looking after your eyebrows the following day.

2. Use a magnified mirror

If you can, use a double-sided magnified mirror to ensure that you are tweezing the correct eyebrow hair. For the best results, make sure that you flit between the regular and magnified sides to ensure both of your eyebrows are equal.

3. Consider your shape

If you're unsure of which hairs to pluck or how to define your shape, a great hack is to use a white eyeliner pencil to trace out your preferred look before picking up the tweezers. If any hairs fall on or below the outline, you know that they are the hairs to pluck.

We hope with these lockdown hair and wig care tips you can look and feel fabulous each day. If you're missing your usual pamper at the salon, you may find our ultimate guide to false eyelashes an interesting read.
