This week I styled my Edwardian wig into 16th Century Venetian

What happens when you just go for it and try to style a wig in Venetian hair horns style? Armed with a steamer, some rollers, and a synthetic wig, I took a chance and was pleasantly surprised with results. This will look wonderful for my Venetian gown project. Venetian hair horns were a very popular renaissance hairstyle in the late part of the 16th century. So let's see if we can achieve this strange look through pure experimentation. And a ton

of hope and bravery. Pointy fashion for the win.

Venetian hair horns, yep part of accepting the challenge of creating this fashion style was taking on the task of making that hairstyle. The only question is how first, let's just look at some pictures of what we're dealing with. I knew that the only way I was going to figure this out was just by trying. I had some idea because of the portraits we see from the side and also just guessing plus a historical source that describes twisting the curls to achieve the cone effect. Take that for what you will I'm dubious first, I'm using t-pins to stabilize the wig I'm using on the wig form or very painful acupuncture. You decide next, I'm using a wide tooth comb to gently detangle, the curls, without destroying their texture and another deep breath. As I prepare to try something that may not work at all, I think I'm gon na I'm gon na have to cut more to everything behind the ear seriously. I can't see I need to get some more lighting. I think that's better and from what I can tell from the artwork they kind of did this thing where they took the front section only and then curled that and then the rest gets pulled back into their braids. So that's kind of what I'm aiming for here. Very big, loose squeaky cut bangs at the front, but I think we're really gon na need much more further back in order for this to even vaguely be convincing, we're just gon na tie all of this back and now I'm gon na start. I'M gon na cut this foreign before. Please don't hate me. I don't know why, but this just feels so wrong. Pull out the stuff. That'S got pulled back. Excuse me, while I stand up in my pj bottoms, maybe we will pull it to the same length here. Don'T forget to point cut your fake hair, it's okay! It was a 30 week. Foreign who else thinks historical costume can be a very anxious endeavor there we go we're done now pile of hair. I only have like this many bobby pins, so I guess I'm just gon na start. Okay, I'm gon na need so many more bobby pins, so we're gon na start pin curling or do I want to use my curlers yeah. I'M gon na have to do that. Foreign, if I don't make a face, how do you people do this with your own hair like every night? Some of you do this all. If you do this every day you set a vintage hairstyle every day, y'all they're nuts. I think they probably would have used a curling iron, like you know, a really hot element, but seeing as this is plastic, we're going to end up with like a giant glob of more plastic, that's not going to work for this situation, I'm probably going to even Run out of my little tiny, curlers too, I'm gon na have to do half and half. I think which is good, because you know I kind of want to know if this is actually going to go anywhere before steaming the curls, I braided the back portion of the wig into two braids and secured them with bobby pins. Historically, this would have been done with hair taping and I will likely do this off camera at another point when I'm ready to wear it with my outfit just waiting for this thing to heat up and start boiling and steaming doing the spring. It'S hot I've never done this before not effectively, so this could be all be a mood point and then I might just have to pin curl my own hair. Oh look at this. I think it might be working it worked. This is just one half, but look at all those curls, oh my God, and they have some bodies, so I think I'm really gon na be able to like stack them at least that's my hoe. We all need to really start taking like historical stuff seriously, because this blows my mind. Okay here is the height that I achieved. I literally just Twisted it like I twist a little bit on the bottom and a little bit on the top and all of these just interlocked with each other and now they're they're standing up there's no product. This is just heat and hair and it's plastic hair. But like oh like this is insane we have a horn y'all like I cannot all right, I'm gon na do the rest and then we're gon na try this on. Do whatever, like through Modern standards. You like look at something that you can restorical and you're like. There'S no way there's no way and you don't believe it and then it happens and you're like, I think, we're good yeah foreign. I still like. I cannot believe I'm really hopeful. This is gon na look good like I'm actually excited. I might need to change the front bangs, but let's try it on and see. Okay, the horns are so high that I'm gon na have to bend down. I I don't know how the back looks. The back needs to be worked on, but I'm still in awe. Um gosh, how do I get you to see the curl there we go now. You can see the curl yay okay, so the only thing that really needs to be worked is like the back area which, from the picture is like points out a bit more because they had more braids, but that's not hard to do just add more braids right. This is cool. I can't wait to put all of this together. I guess now I need to finish the skirt and the actual garment, so I have something to wear. Take care.

Renee Starling: OMG! Now I remember what this style reminds me of! The original Grizabella wig in the 1981 London production of CATS! I need to get one of those little steamers, though. There are so many historical hair styles that my hair just isn't suited for and using steam to style wigs looks soooo much easier.

Matilda K: I recently got a really short hairstyle and I'm loving it like 29 days a month but every now and then it would be cool to be able to step into a heckin' big hairstyle. Might have to get a wig. Hair can do so many things.

Steve Zytveld: That wig is so beautiful, well done. You stepped out of a painting. Adam Savage just did a video with two Cos Players about creating really out-there fantasy wig styles. It's fascinating stuff. I'm getting ready to cut off my locs after 7 years - it's time. And, as much as I will miss having them, I am kinda looking forward to the chance to play with wigs. - Cathy (&, accidently, Steve), Ottawa/Bytown/Pimisi

M. MacLellan: This was fun ! I think I could get my hair to do this, holds a curl well. Maybe for Halloween ?! Think the Hocus Pocus hair dos were similar !?

The Serial Hobbyist Girl: It looks great!

Shannon Lambert: it's surprisingly cute, too!!!
