1940S Faux Bangs

My second ever vintage hair tutorial, this time it's 40s style faux / bumper bangs! Not quite as big as Dita von Teese's (or her icon Carmen Miranda) but better for those not quite as brave! It could also work for a 50s, Bettie Page style look and it's a perfect pinup girl style. Look out for the comedy fumble at the beginning!

If you have any questions, please just ask. I'll be posting this on my blog, do check it out for more 40s fashion and style tips:

Hi gorgeous blog readers and YouTube viewers. Welcome to my second video, my name is Fleur in case you missed the first one, and what I'm going to show you today is how to do a 40's foe, bang. I was going to do the combination of faux bangs and victory rolls but hey, I thought, I'd ease you in gently and B. I recently had my hair cut, so I need to kind of experiment a little bit with it. So without further ado and the essentials that you need for this tutorial are hair brush, which I didn't explain last time. I added it into the comments, but in case you're wondering the brand is Mason Pearson and it's a nylon and boar bristle hair brush you'll also need a tail comb with the tail for creating nice. Partings you'll need a handful off kirby grips, also known as bobby pins. If you're an American, you will need a head scarf of some kind, mine's a chiffon. It'S a square-shape chiffon head scarf that I fold it into a triangle: hairspray. Of course, Tresemme freeze hold and last but not least, my secret weapon, which is a hair rat. Now this hair rat, I'm not gon na hold it up any closer. Is it a little bit it's disgusting really, but this hair actually started off life as one of those bun rings, which you must have seen in the shops you can buy them from. You know loads of different places. What I did was cut it in half and then got out my needle and thread and stitched stitched around the top a little bit and the bottom, obviously because otherwise it will unravel, and this one is unraveling a little bit's, it's quite old now and really. But what I did, instead of creating a whole hair, wrap from my own hair, which is you can find guides to doing that, keeping the hair from your hairbrush and sticking it in a hairnet, which I find to be a little bit disgusting. I just put the hair from my hairbrush on the ends, which is quite disgusting enough frankly, but also the advantage of using one of these is you've got a nice uniform size. So let's get started um. What I do get my tail comb and they usually start from the parting, because it's obviously easier it's there and I go in a semicircle around the top going reasonably far back getting enough hair in there and down the other side in the same sort of place. No, actually, what I'm actually gon na do is get a little bit more hair out because I'm not using the rest of the hair for anything. So it helps the more hair you have the easier it is to cover the rat, so you've sectioned off a section of hair. You can see a semicircle brush it out nicely. Obviously I like to use a little bit of hair spray, all the same serum that I used in my other tutorial, which not too much because you you don't want the hair to be all stuck together. So just a little coating to make it sort of smooth there so then take my rat and place the hair right in the center tightly tightly start rolling, making sure everything is in there and just roll it up. Now, as I keep saying roll it up tightly, you don't want it to be too loose. So I'd like to stop when it's kind of in the middle of my forehead, because I don't personally like it when all you can see its forehead and it's just perched right on the top, so stopping there in the middle. Now what I do is I bend the sides up one by one, so the ends are just on the inside of the parting Kirby grip in the end. Like so and then another Kirby grip, we tend to use about two in each side, because then I use extra ones to tidy it up a little bit anchor the hair and look a bit better around the side. So one side. So that's in nice and secure dipping down in the middle like the sort of the classical u-shaped fringe, not not too straight. So what I do now is spread it out gently now you want to do it. You want to kind of budge the hair over evenly. So that there are no gaps and so that what come coming from the middle stays in the middle and then the side bits stay at the sides. If you catch my drift, what you don't want is any really obvious gaps in the middle either. Not too many. You know, obviously, you need a wrap that matches your hair color as well as possible, although they only seem to come in three blonde black and mid brown, so that's about even then you get these bits here and I just tuck them inside now. What I might do, actually, let's take another Kirby grip and just anchor those bits down a little bit like that. You may find that the ones you stuck in the ends pop out a bit, so you might need to push them in a bit and what I'm now finding is that the curve is slightly being lost, so I'll form it back into place a bit spray. It down you have to forgive my very strange face that I pull when I do hairspray, which one only realizes when one looks at oneself on video. So because my hair is a bit wispy and fly away, I tend to get bits of pay special attention to the edges and make sure that flyaway bits are sprayed under. So that, in a nutshell, is that what I do for a daily look, which is simple I'll, throw the back up in some way. You can do it much more neatly than I'm doing it now, just using a couple of kirby grips to secure a very quick and dirty French pleat, and then I get my chiffon head scarf, I'm gon na roll it and wrap it in on itself twice. So this, what's the triangle then roll it up twice. So it's in a strip and then I'll tie it around my head, not too tight leaks. Then it slips off. I like to have it covering my ears lightly, but that's just again a personal preference. So I fluffed the bows out I'll secure it at the top just by the fringe, so it's slightly concealed. It helps that it's black and the sleeper clips are black and that's it. That'S. That is my very quick hairdo, which is not quite easy to do to work. Windproof, it's 40s goes with the whole factory girl out. You know I'm wearing my factory girl overalls today. So hopefully that's been helped. You um, I will, when I've had a play around, to show you how I do to victory rolls on either side to make make it all kind of merge into one which is a much more elegant evening. Look but basically that's my faux bangs in a nutshell. So I hope you've enjoyed watching and let me know what you think as usual and don't forget to subscribe. If you enjoyed this video because I'll be doing more over the coming weeks, so talk to you all again soon.

MrsYobiePants: Fleur, I just wanted to thank you ever so much for this tutorial. I decided not to commit to cutting a fringe but still really loved the vintage fringe look. This is simply a brilliant alternative. I went and bought a hair sausage this morning and the results are wonderful. Thank you so much from Australia.

colorsmadeoftears: I have to thank you because I tought I'd never have this type of look, because I can't grow a proper fringe !! I'm so happy now. Thank you for making it all so simple... I'd love to see it with te victory rolls as well !

LeiLion: That was the best hair tutorial I have ever seen, when you spread out the hair! genius! Thanks so much , I have been wondering about this look for ages!!! I do pinup and performer burlesque photography but have an interest in the look for myself! thanks

kris10cali: Well done, I love it! Can't wait to learn new techniques from you! I already have a "Betty" bang/fringe, so this one I can't use, but still fun to watch.

Prim N Pearls: This video really informed me well! For the "hair rat", I ended up finding some faux hair that they market for theater hair (actually wool) which I just held together with some of those tiny clear rubber bands. It works very well for me! :)

Casey Koester: Wow Fleur - this is total genius! I have one of those crazy bun forms but could never figure out how to use it. I'm cutting it apart tonight! Thank you so much for this marvelous video. I'm all inspired now. :D

brianbry93: This is brilliant :) I'm slowly growing my layers out, it might help complete your tutorials :)

killerteeth: Seriously, this is the best tutorial on bumper/faux bangs. I never thought about cutting those bun ring things! Genius!

Daniela Gutierrez: You addressed those parts that stick out on the sides! I'm so happy, I could cry. Others normally don't do that, but that was my biggest problem so thank you! I can now wear this with confidence.

Angela Ryan: great tutorial! thanks so much for sharing! i will definitely pass this along. looking forward to more! xo

cyberminky64: wow, this is such a cute look :) i loved this tutorial and i've subscribed :D enjoy the rest of the day xx

warclassics: awesome! :D i can't wait for more. you make it so much easier to do.

Avaaricious: the fact that we have similar hair styles and seemingly similar hair textures makes this incredibly easy for me to watch and take in. What a great result, i cannot wait to try it this way for myself!

utoobr10: wow! you made this so easy and simple! So much easier than other videos I've seen. I really like your "rat" tip.

CharminglyRetro: This is too cute! Love it!

19gloria56: omg i recently let my bettie bangs grow out and sometimes i miss them. but this great! btw i love your blog<3

Oysterbluestoday: Yay! I cant wait to see the one with the victory rolls I've always wanted to see how to make it all connect.

Kasandra's Weight Loss Journey: I loved this vid! I can't wait to see more hair tutorials from you :) ...maybe a makeup vid as well?

tutieq: I love your two videos I'm glad you're going to do more :)

PZPcreations: Great video! The most detailed and well made one for bumper bangs I have seen! I just have one question, how many inches long is the hair rat?

odedaj: Adorable! So nice of you to post this video. Thank you!

diaryofavintagegirl: Ah, thank you! But I've had bettie bangs in the past and they do seem to suit, but when you have them, you're stuck with them! This is why I devised my faux bangs - best of both worlds!

Carolyn: Loved your videos! I am involved in WWII reenacting and am always looking for hair creations. I enjoyed yours the best on Youtube and look forward to your victory roll video. Carolyn, Florida USA

marloes: This was very helpfull, finally a usefull faux bangs tutorial! Thank you. I think I will try this next week - first get me that funny hairthing.

Chantelle Tuau: I tried so hard to find a rat in NZ before my vintage chic wedding reception but no luck. I'm still keen to wear this style as it looks so chic and you make it look so easy :) thanks :)

lifeisgood06: please make another video. i love the 40's looks!

sarrawh: THANK YOU! This helped soo much! :)

deamondoll: By far still the best bumper bang tutorial on you youtube!

Ivory & Gold: Best faux bang tutorial I've found so far. I know it's an old video but still. Your hair seems to be a similar length and texture to mine. All I need some kind of scarf or hair wrap.

Lady Popkins: this suits you so well! i have a straight fringe so i sometimes tend to just use my straightners to curl in and get a similar effect

LisaFreemontStreet: Fabulous! So glad you're posting again. :) I have always shied away from Rats because my hair is fine and I have difficulty keeping them covered...considering trying again.

FeistyPenguin: Love it!! :)

Deanna Crownover: If you make a rat from your own hair, you'll never have to hide it. It blends right in! I have rolled rats (just save your own hair from your brush, if you've not got long hair, it could take a couple months) and I have triangular rats. . A lot of upstyles require teasing, which is the worst thing done to hair, besides heat applications. Use the rats for height as well! (you can get the Flo look by pinning a rat to your crown, brush hair over the top smoothly and pin in back! Takes 5 seconds!

Rachael Cox: Really good, always wanted to know how it was created. Well made video, thanks ;)

Scott Daniel D'Arcy-Masters: Fleur you are fantastic! Love ya! x

diaryofavintagegirl: Thanks so much! Just measured mine - it's 6.5 inches/16.5cm. Hope that helps!

jazzmania1000: Thanks for sharing a really nice clear video to follow.

Glamouracecollies: Great tutorial, I see I do have the same hairrat as you do, so I must not be a problem doing this. (altough I have short bangs now)

thatweirdvintagegirl: I like how you fluff out the scarf, it makes it look like you're wearing a super-epic 40s-50s hat.

BrotmitMarmelade: very beautiful!

Succubus3e: Best video for faux bangs! Bravo :)

johanne martinez: This tutorial helped me alot!!! question...how does the hair look when being looked at from the back? can you see holes?

Nata Di Paula: I really want to see this look with the victorian rolls :(

DaniCali: very clever i used to do a forward roll bang but flatten the edge out and make it lower like u do(which was VERY tedious) but this was very clever i think u should cut ur bangs like that u look really good with a betty style bang :)

GinPrincess3931: Ha, brilliant. I wish I'd seen this before I cut my fringe in ;)

Kensie Almarinez: we're doing retro modeling this weekend 29 of January 2012. And i'm so bless i found your video! that looks stunning! Grnat Job! im just wondring where could i get that hair rat? since i haven't seen it. so good luck to me. thank you. more power!

LisaFreemontStreet: I was thinking the same thing, kris...I almost wish I had no bangs just so I could try this. I did buy the rat and stitched the ends though, for a Gibson Roll...so maybe someone will let me 'faux bang' them soon. LOL

utoobr10: Looking forward to your tutorial on victory rolls

Eternal Starlight: HAIR RAT!!!! BRILLIANT!!

Caralain13: SO I can get the roll, but can't figure out how to hide the ends of the rat! If I push the hair off the rat at the sides to hide it, they fall of the edges and sag. Any suggestions?

diaryofavintagegirl: Naw, you'd be amazed at the amount of compliments you get!

DaniCali: you should look at lisafreemont's page b/c i was scared of cutting them again like that but she has a few videos and a book recomendation that will give u ideas to do cute hair styles with the bangs if u leave em a bit longer then what u would expect :)

diaryofavintagegirl: thank you!

KILLAFEET: GiRRRRL.. this is awesome!... ;)

diaryofavintagegirl: Oh! I thought this was the 21st century... thanks for letting me know ;)

Hug 23: nice job girl

diaryofavintagegirl: I just measured mine for the other commenter -6.5ins or 16.5cm - hope that helps!

Bélinda Mouriez: ouaou ! very cool ! Where I can to buy the roll up on the Web ?

Penelope Clarke-Cawthorne: How do you fix your own hair to the end of the rat?

byebyebelly: This is cute, but I'd be too scared to wear it in public

KILLAFEET: the Two thumbs of my killer feet are up for this one! YEAHH!
