This video documents my first attempt at roller setting my naturally curly hair. For more information, visit http://glorycrown.blogspot.com/2009/07...

Hey everyone: it's your girl, Nomi 2004, also known as D princes 28, I'm coming at you today because I'm going to attempt to do a roller set. This is my hair and it's naturally I'll say frizzy state, because it's not really. My curls aren't really shaped and I'm due to have it washed. So what I'm going to do is I'm gon na give the shower I'm gon na wash. I am gon na deep condition, my hair with my oars replenishing pack and then I'm gon na come back. This will be the first time and I'm actually attempting to do a roller set on natural hair. I used to roller set my hair quite often when I was relaxed. In fact, if you guys watched my my hair journey video, that's on my blog. I talked about how there were two times in my life that I damaged my hair and the first time was when I was in junior high and I was using a curling iron everyday to spiral. Curl, my bangs or my hair and my hair broke off and fell out, and so the way I've nursed it back to health and got my length back was, I would go to the shop and get wraps, and then I would roller set it at home in Between shop visits and when I rolled up my hair, I didn't have to do anything to it for about a week, so I know that roller sets are great for the hair I'm gon na. Like I said, this would be the first time that I'm attempting to do it on my natural hair, so I'm going to go ahead and wash and condition it and then I'll be back. Okay, everyone, I'm back so my hair has just been washed in deep conditioned and what I'm going to be using is a product that I picked up at Sally's today. It'S called design foam by elastic kewpie reason why I chose this over other form. Wrap setting. Lotions is because it says that it contains olive oil, coconut oil and avocado oil and it's alcohol, free and some of the other ones. I had looked at said that it would provide a light hold, so I thought it might give it more of a the hairspray effect, and I want something that will get my hair, smooth and silky, and this is what this claims to do so I'll be giving It a shot I'm going to be using my roller set, my 75 piece roller set that I purchased at Walgreens. I debut this on my blog a while ago, some of you said that you also saw this at available at Walmart and basically as rollers of various sizes, so I'm only going to be using. These are the rollers that I used to roller set my hair at night if you've watched that video, but I wanted something larger because I feel like it would take. You know the smell and the roller the longer it'll take because in your hair is thicker on the roller. So I want to get something that will stretch my hair out. So I want to try this so what I'm gon na go ahead and do is I'm going to part my hair in two sections, and so I can work section by section. Okay, so I went ahead and divided my hair into four sections. I still haven't put any product in it, yet this basically says to dispense foam it's a palm of hands on damp hair distribute evenly by coming through. Like I said, this is the first time I'm performing a roller set in years and it's the first time I'll. Be performing one on natural hair, so this will be the experiment for both of us, so I'm gon na go ahead and get some of that whew I'll. Leave that in there just so, you can see that oh go ahead and pick some of this phone and start putting it in my hair. Then I will take my why tooth comb and start combing through it from roots to from ends to the roots. I did detangle my hair in the shower, go ahead and put a little bit more of this near my roots. To make sure I can get that smoothed out. You can concentrate a little bit more on my ends. My hair is actually still really wet, so I'm just gon na take my towel and just blot it a little bit and then go ahead and put just a little bit more foam in okay. I think I got an apple amount of this product in this section. Someone go ahead, a cool thing about this set, the 75 P said. Is it came with a rat tail comb? You could use this to do your parts. It also comes with these clips, so instead of having the magnetic casing on top, I guess I'm supposed to be clipping my hair into place. So we'll see how that goes. Then I'll take one of the clips that was provided in the set and go ahead and clip my hair, which that does not seem like that's gon na stay okay there. So I got to clip it towards the roots. Actually, I will do this one more time. So I wan na make sure I get a good amount of tension to stretch my hair out, and I already see that I may have an issue of getting my hair straight at the roots that does not feel secure. Cass said this was gon na, be an adventure for both of us bear with me please. This does not stay in place and it's gon na defeat the whole purpose. Oh the cool thing about this - I don't know if you noticed that this has holes in it and the holes are supposed to allow the air to flow through better, and you know penetrate through to your hair, okay. So I'm gon na leave that at that go ahead and get another section by this section into two sections. Like I said, I don't want to build up too much hair on one roller, because it'll just be that much harder for the air to penetrate decided to alternate between the sizes. So I guess this one will be considered super jumbo. Then I have the Jumbo. Then I guess this would be considered large, medium and small. So that's what this kit contains actually there's a one's even smaller than this, so this would be even smaller. So so I don't use all the purp only have one two, three, four, five, six, seven. Eight purple ones I'm gon na alternate to make sure I'll have enough to use on this side too. Okay, as you can see, I have half my head done. All the hair in the back. I'Ve noticed that, with these clips, in order to get a good amount of tension, you need to place these clips as close to the scalp as possible. I don't even know if this is gon na, be a good enough amount of tension to give my hair, as straight as I want it to be, but um I alternated the size of the rollers, because I saw that like, for instance, I'm not gon na have Enough jumbo to just put like all the jumbo in the back, so whatever I did on this side, I just try to mimic on the other side, so whatever I come out with it'll look uniform even if it's like uniformly crazy. I don't know okay, so you like this one, this one feels loose or is loose so go ahead and tighten that okay. Now I'm gon na get started on the front section, so go ahead and take some of the rap lotion and saturate it oh and places when I got to when I started parting through each section. If I saw any place that works dry like, for instance, some areas, my hair seemed drier at the roots that I just applied a little bit more of the wrap setting lotion to that neck area said I'm gon na go ahead and squeeze some of this out Apply just a little bit more, the Jumbo one. This isn't the superjumbos one right under the jumbo. With that. Okay, houston, we have a problem because I just ran out of these silver clips that came with the rollers, so I'm gon na see if my silver clips that I used to part my hair with, will work and if not, then I'm going to have to proceed To roll the rest of my hair with my magnetic rollers fences, here's one of my typical clips: okay, that worked hopefully I'll, have enough. Okay, everyone, I'm back! As you can see, I got all my hair rolled up. Luckily, I didn't need to use any of my magnetic rollers, my when I ran out of the clips. I just went ahead and use my silver hair clips and I still have a few left. So actually, what I'm gon na do is, I said many times before the reason. One of the reasons why I don't do roller sets because it takes so long. It just took me 30 minutes just to roll my hair up and just the way it's looking. I have no idea how this is gon na turn out, because I don't feel like I have enough tension. In fact, I'm gon na do this one over but um. What I wanted to explain to you was long REE curling. This one is that I don't like the fact that I can sit on the dryer for so long. So what I'm gon na do is I'm actually going to someone out tonight. I'M going to give myself a manicure pedicure first, because I figure, if I got ta, send out of the dryer for a good hour, so my nails can also be drying during that time. So I'm going to like say, give myself a manicure pedicure. First then I'll sit on the dryer, so I will tell you how long this process takes me and I'll account for air drying time, which will be, while I'm doing my nails in sitting under the dryer. And then I will come back and let you know what we're working with

Sierra Lewis: I have been rollersetting my hair, although I have relaxed hair, I try to keep a spray bottle filled with water on the side for when my hair starts to dry out, it helps so I dont have to reapply the foam wrap lotion, and also helps to alleve that crunchy feeling when dry. Hope this helps! Love your videos and you hair came out beautiful!

potterylady1: I love this style. I use to do it all the time when I was transitioning. It was so cute!!!! I need to pick it back up again.

EmileeArsenic: one way to get it tighter/straighter at the root is to clip it at the scalp with the clip resting between your scalp and the roller. I have curly hair as well and roller sets are always a challenge :) happy hair travels

godschyle: Hey gurl I loves ur vids. This one here I FEEL ya pain; I could never acheive the same secure hold w/ the clips as having somenone else do it, as they work from a better angle than doing it myself. So I just bypass the effort & use the rollers w/ the magnetic cover/clips. Roots still come out a bit frizzy 90% of the time but a few strokes from the blow dryer cures that. My salonist friend hip me 2using a small flat iron on the roots instead of a blowdryr 2avoid frying the cuticles open. ;)

Czathero: My mother used to do this a lot when I was young. I never got why. I thought it made her hair curly, but I never saw her take it out. I would try to do this if I could find her rollers, if she didn't throw them out.

DPrincess28: Thanks for the feedback. Remember, this was my FIRST time doing it on natural hair & using these types of rollers.

Jazmyn Marie: Have you ever thought of using that setting lotion to define your curls. it seemed like it would work for you. I just recently tried it and it made my 3b curls tighten to a 4a. It's not permanent though.

Levina: @DPrincess28 Your natural hair is beautiful. Do you ever just wear it like it is after you wash it? If so, what products do you use to control the frizz and maintain the curl. My mom has hair like yours, but unfortunatley it wasn't passed down to me. I'd love to see her sport her natural curls.

adzemk: I think you did a great job for a first timer!

suzieqshair: cute vid!! Can't wait to see Part 2.

JassyPooh01: just as a sidenote. this may help you in the future. the lower/closer to the nape your hair is ... that is where your hair is generally shorter at. so next time you should use a smaller roller towards the nape & that would give you better tension to straighten out the roots!

prettyfaceashe: Roll the opposite way & clip the rollers w. two clips (one on each side). It makes for more tension and holds way better.

geetmyster: I think you did a great job rollin it in just 30 mins. I hate using those clips I haven't mastered them, not enough tension. I haven't roller set my hair since it was relaxed.

Shy: You video just made my day. I always love to roller set my hair and i thought I could not do that if transtition to natura!!! I'm happy now

Imania Powers: For future reference, you should roll your hair up. That'll make the roots less frizzy when you take them out.

2dopetiff: i can tell why your roller set didnt come out smooth at the roots. When you roller set natural hair you gotta roll it on top of the hair not under.. u get a lot more tension than rolling under. Try that next time and i think you'll be much happier. But it turned out pretty good!

SonicGurl367: Would you say that the clips you used towards the end of your video. (The longer ones, I believe they are called duckbill clips?) Are easier to use then the shorter ones that came in the pack? The short ones looked like they were a bit of a hassle. Also, I know a lot of people use the "Roll, roll, pull" method to gain tension in the roots. I too am still learning myself. (x_x) This junk takes a lot of practice.

LoveMyUnusual: @DPrincess28 Your wet hair is gorgeous as is, but thanks for the tutorial nonetheless! I hope I get some great results :)

Denise J.: my experience you have to pin it to the scalp and instead of pins in front try pin in the back so you wont burn your forehead

SimplyShakeila: i tired this on my hair but as i was rolling the front of my hair the back poofed up while it was on the rollers. i have the same texture hair as yours so any suggestions?????????

parisdiamond2000: Thank You for posting these videos.

OhSahZay: about the roller sets...do the foam ones work too or should you just get the hard ones?? Anyone who knows please respond.... Thank you, Osaze' :)

Steffmd25: You have to put the clips along the scalp, you kinda placed it along the side of the roller close to the scalp, but not along the scalp.

lisalilsmartass: oooh I've never ever done a rollerset ...I'll try it ?? ....do you use heat when you rollerset or no heat? because I know some people do use heat ? Thanks :)

DeeShaLatoya: Why is it that every time you have decent hair or a lighter complexion people always assume that you're mixed. It's kinds of disrespectful actually. I have the same problem because I like mustard...LOL... :( Love your vids and your hair always great info!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!

beautifulc87: what type of foam are you using?

DPrincess28: Thanks hun!

MakeupFanatic: i love your hair!!

miamore77: also try anchoring the rollers together with the clip i rember my stylist doing that with my hair when i got rollersets back in da day.

jeco: use the rollers with the clamps

DPrincess28: Thank you!

AlisaKay: can u get a wrap on natural hair?

𝓣𝓲𝓹𝓼𝓑𝔂𝓑𝓻𝓲: Are you mixed with anything or are you just black? I LOVE your natural hair.

DPrincess28: Yes hun, I know :-)

Reels me: i went to school for hair. and we had to clip the rollers together.

LovelyMe3: ur supposed to clip @ the bottom of the roller{under the roller} not on top of hair

So Life Gets Real: your hair is beautiful

broncofangj: Oh dear I have tried using these rollers and I cannot seem to get them to say in my hair.

madiaj: Buildablebeauty have a awesome video on rollersetting.

Valkyrie Grey: @DeeShaLatoya Agreed.

lisalilsmartass: ooops my bad...question answered ! :)

Cybil017: I SUCK @ rollersetting...:0(

MUZIQUALBEAUTIQUEEN: You Clip at the bottom baby

dmdaily: Eee
