How-To: Curly Cut For Fine Hair

Curly hair presents it’s own challenges. One example is that when hair is layered ‘traditionally,’ the layers tend to round themselves out once dry. This week Ruth shares a quick tutorial, creating layers in a different way on curly fine hair.

Welcome to out there this week, I want to share a step-by-step with you, a haircut that is on fine curly hair and, as you know, curly hair presents its own challenges, especially when it's fine. So with this look, I started with a horseshoe section on the top and began working underneath with vertical sections. Take a look, the reason that it's called stair stepping is because we're literally like walking down the steps as we go. So we cut one step here then we're going an inch and a half cut another step here, inch and a half another step here here here, because curly hair when it when it goes back to its natural state. You don't see the layers in the hair. It always rounds itself out so going in and each time I'm picking up a new section, I'm not working with a technical guide, it's more of a visual guide, knowing that I'm starting at about an inch and a half and then working my way out once we Get to right behind the ear where we have less density, you want to make sure that you're working your way out quickly, as opposed to digging into the section too much before you work out to the link, because we want to make sure we keep that density. There on the bottom, so that we don't create too much of a space, and I'm just going to leave this piece right here around her face, because it's pretty fine and we don't need to cut into it to fill the shape in closer at the nave. We went inside and cut a dotted line, so I'm going in at about an inch and a half and what I'm going to do is take a piece I'm going to cut it and then I'm going to move straight down a vertical line and cut another piece Boom and then another piece, and what this is going to do is again leave these pieces out but collapse the shape in closer to the head. So we're using our our mind's eye here and just remembering that length that we cut before and going down and down and down. Next we worked into the horseshoe section so going inside that's going to be our shortest point, so I'm going to go in here! I'M going to take a small piece and that's going to be basically our guide for the rest of the top. I'M going to cut it short, so we're about three and a half inches there ready and then what we're going to do now is take pie-shaped sections. All the way through the horseshoe and we're going to do stair stepping again from short to long next, we applied style, + care, infusions from pure ology in the curl complete system, all the way through wet hair, twisted it into little pieces and diffused it dry. So here's the finished look. You can see how the shape is a little narrow. Here we've got more volume on the top and it's just a really nice look for curly hair. That is not too short. It'S got movement to it, but it has a nice shape. I hope you enjoyed that step-by-step. Look until next time. That'S all for now!

Karen DeMars: Thank you so much, Ruth! I had to cut my elderly mom’s hair because she’s currently homebound, and , as a complete novice, I was able to follow your guide really effectively ... I so appreciate the time you took to put together an excellent how-to! ♥️

Judith: Thank you so much for this technique. First I was sceptical but then tried in on myself as best as I could... I'm absolutely speechless. Thank you ❤️ that bouncy waves... wow.

Ana Niederhauser: I did this technique yesterday, love it!

Littlebird Jill: It looks lovely...well done!!

Honey Beary: It would have been very educational to see how you achieved the finished look

Justme77: My hair is very fine around the crown and front but kind of thick in the back, all the hair from the ear line back. It's tricky.

Dee Palmer: Wouldn’t this make your thin hair look even thinner? They did this to my hair, by my ears, and so now it looks as if I don’t have any hair in the front, just like her. And I don’t like it looking like an 80s mullet.

Kathy Cadile: What type of cut would you call this when going to a stylist?

maria cardona: This looks awful to me. My hair is thin and if I cut it blunt at the shoulder, it looks its best. I could cry just watching this.

Ramona Dinwiddie: Nice work!! My hair is past my shoulders can I do this?

Cynthia Jennings: I have shoulder length fine wave (NOT CURLY) hair and would like to accentuate the waves. Will this cut work for mildly wavy hair?

Ann Englehart: This king of cut makes my fine curly hair freak out. I was cringing as I watched.

E.A: Can I do this technique with long hair?

H S: What makes you think this a good idea for fine curly hair?

Mighty Lore: I have this haircut and I absolutely hate it. I feel like I have a square mullet. I haven't been able to find a hairdresser who is able to fix it either. Yuck.

Perry Foskey: How can I find a hairstylist in my area that can cut my hair like that? Location College Station, TX

L B: I have curly hair. Don’t like this cut. It would be v hard to maintain at home.

Darlene Gattus: Nice

Sandra Almeida: Awful look the lady is pretty but now you messed up her hair

Goose Knee: Hmmm idk it kinda looks like a 80s mullet

Misty Kelischek: Hmmmm

Angelus Sierra: Horrific yikes
