Aveda How-To | Create Your Own French Braid

http://www.aveda.com/dryshampoo The French braid is a classic style dating back over 6,000 years. It’s one of the basic braid styles and is simple to create on your own. Aveda Institute Minneapolis student Emily demonstrates how to French braid your hair in this step-by-step tutorial.

To start, puff a small amount of Shampure Dry Shampoo into your hair and comb it out using an Aveda paddle brush to remove any excess oil. Then, part your hair from ear to ear. To accomplish this, it’s easiest to tilt your head to one side and brush as much hair in that direction as possible. You should have one large section of hair swiped from ear to ear and another draped down your neck. Take the back section and brush it out. Twirl it up and clip it with duckbill clips for now.

Going back to the main section of hair, take a strand and start braiding. After a few braids, add a bit of hair each step. The braid should look like it’s pulled tight to your head. Secure it with an elastic binder once you’re done braiding. Loosen the crown of the braid lightly for added volume and then pin it with bobby pins.

Release the clips holding your back section and brush it out. Separate it into two equal sections and braid both. Now it’s time to get creative. Curl up one of the back braids into any shape you’d like. Here, we create an S shape. Repeat with the second back section. Make sure you use as many pins as needed so nothing comes loose.

Finally, bring your French braid around to the back and pin it in place. Set the look with Aveda Control Force Hairspray.

With a little bit of practice, creating an elegant French braid look can be done in about ten minutes. Click the link above to learn more and pick up Aveda Control Force Hairspray.

[, MUSIC PLAYING ] Hi, I'm Emily and I'm a student at the Aveda Institute of Minneapolis.. Today, I am going to show you how to do a French braid on yourself., So to begin we're going to use some dry shampoo. Just going to use this and puff it in towards the scalp area.. This just gives you a really refreshed. Look takes away any extra oil -- just puffing that in there. Now I'm going to brush my hair out with my Aveda paddle brush and evenly distribute that dry shampoo.. Now that I have my hair all brushed out, I'm going to create a part from ear to ear, and that's where I'm going to create my French braid.. So I'm going to start pushing my hair over to one side and drag my comb from ear to ear. Just like that., So I have all of this hair going this way and I'm going to take the rest of my hair and brush it out. Or comb. It either way it works. And then I'm going to clip the back section away.. So I'm going to twirl it up and use to duckbill clips to clip my hair away. And that way I can just focus on the French braid for now and I'll come back to that later.. So now I have my hair going in the direction I want. It., I'm going to take a small section right at the beginning of that parting and start to braid.. So I'm going to start with one two: three sections. Cross, the first section over the middle and the second section over the middle., And now that I have the beginning of the braid. What I'm going to do cross that section over and add a little bit of hair to it like so., And then I'm going to cross this section over the middle and add more hair to that.. Now, I'm back to this side crossing it over taking a small portion of hair and adding it in. Crossing the other side over and adding more hair.. Now you can see the the French braid is starting to form., Bringing that portion over and adding a little bit more hair., Bringing this section over adding any extra hair that I have left. And the French braid look is so that it looks tight to your head. And I'm going to bring this section over. Now I have all my hair in the braid and I'm just going to begin braiding regularly. So bringing this side over and back. I'm going to take an elastic and fasten that braid.. So now that I have that done, I'm just going to loosen this lightly and pin it.. So I'm going to push it up like that, so and pin it just like that with bobby pins., Pinning it up and into place.. It just gives a little more volume. And I'm going to pin the other side up a little bit as well again with the bobby, pin and trying to hide it in the braid.. So, as you can see, you get nice volume. And just play with it. A little bit, if you need to pull it a little further apart to get a little looser., It depends on how loose you want it.. So now that that's up I'm going to drop my next section and brush this hair out. And now I'm going to separate this section of hair into two equal parts and I'm just going to braid those two sections. So separating it into three. One two, three crossing One over the middle crossing, the opposite side over the middle. And I'll continue to do that. All the way down the strand., And now I'm going to do that same exact thing on the other side leaving out the French braid portion.. So I have one two and three crossing one side over the middle section crossing the other side over the middle section.. I'M going to continue to do that all the way. Down.. Now, once I finished braiding these I'm going to pin them up., And this is the part that you get to be creative. I'll, pin it in a certain way, but it doesn't have to look exactly like mine.. It'S going to create an up-do look.. So now that I have these braids finished I'll start pinning.. So I'm going to take this braid and I'm going to bring it into the back and create an S motion in the back of my head., Just kind of coiling that braid on my low neck area and pinning it into place.. I'M just kind of placing my hand to keep it held where I want it to until I pin it. Use as many pins as you need to to make sure that the hair is securely fastened. That should be good.. Now I'm going to take my other side and do the exact same thing right on top of the piece that I just did. So making that S motion and pinning. We'll probably do one more just to be safe.. The last thing you want to happen is you work so hard on her beautiful hair and then you don't pin it enough and it all falls out.. So I'm going to take my last piece right here. My French braid.. Maybe push it up just a little bit more just to create a little bit more volume, because I, like mine, really big, but you can do it. However, you want. Just like that and I'm going to bring that right to the back and finish that look out.. Now, once I have that pinned right on top of my other two braids I'll, be all finished., You want to make sure that you're getting all the little ends. I like to just tuck them right under the braid with bobby pins.. Do one more again just to be safe., I try to do under the braid on top of the braid and both sides.. So now that I have it all pinned exactly where I want it, I'm going to finish it off with Control Force. Hairspray., Don't use this until you are all finished with your look because once you've sprayed it, it's really hard to move the hair, around. So I'll spray, each of the braids spraying any little flyways down., And now I have a completed look.. I hope this tutorial was helpful for you and that you get to try this out on yourself. Hope to see you next time.
