The question I am asked the most these days is how I do my messy bun, so at these classes that I've been teaching these live hair classes, almost every class except the updo class ends with. Can you show me how to do the messy bun that you do so? This is something that you may have seen on Instagram, because I wear my hair in a messy bun a lot. It'S basically been raining here in Raleigh for the past two months. It feels like kind of the best two years it's been raining so much uh and I'm hanging with the boys and doing stuff. So my hair goes up in a bun. So if it's not in a bun its down or it's in a braid, so I've got like three styles that I repeat so to me. It feels a little funny to do tutorial about it because there's I mean there's thought behind it, but it's it's kind of a mess, but I guess I guess, there's like a strategy. There'S thought behind it. So I'm not pleased with my hair. Today. I'Ve done a couple different things to it and it's just not happening so um. I did curl it because I was, I had other intentions for it, but this is a bad hair day for me, so I'm throwing this mess up. It was curled with the one and a quarter barrel, curling iron, by fabulous and what's on it is a quash uplifting foam at the roots. I used a serum to smooth through my ends because those were getting frizzy in the humidity and very overdue for a haircut um other than that I haven't put anything in it. So I'm going to put a little bit of the living proof perfect hair day dry. Shampoo, all throughout I did wash it last night, blew it dry and slept on it. So this is going to give a little bit of texture is not a texture spray, but it's going to add a little bit um sort of some day to texture. For me, I really love this as a dry shampoo as well. It helps sort of revive and refresh my roots for this purpose, I'm just using it to sort of add a little bit of product to my hair. The goal when putting your hair up in a messy bun is to make sure you have a lot of support for this style. So if that's texture spray, like bumble, bumble dry, sponge finish or a Mekas on on texture spray, which is my favorite texture spray. I feel like I use that in every hair tutorial or if you don't have a texture spray, I'm showing you now how to use some dry shampoo, just to add a little bit of grip through the rest of your hair. So just a little and then I'm going to go through and tease it. If you want your bun to be a messy bun, you must create a mess, that's how it works guys. So I'm pulling a section up in the back. I have cheesed it a little bit, but I've done so many different things with it kind of doesn't know what to do using a fine toothed end of my comb and teasing. So that is going to be where I want my fun to sort of settle. So I'm going to leave the teasing in at the roots there. If your hair shows teasing you might want to smooth it out a little bit. My underneath sections really don't show very much so I can kind of leave it to you now, I'm taking the wide tooth and just doing a really rough to use to sort of just add width instead of height at the roots and not smoothing it out. That'S the key, I think, sometimes in the past I've seen women have this really beautiful, sleek straight hair and they go to pull it up into a messy bun and I'm like no, no, no, no, you got to start with the mess. So now I am using hairspray, because my hair tends to go really limp and lifeless. I need hairspray to sort of keep some structure in my hair. If your hair is the same or you're messy bun tends to flop a little bit put a little hairspray and make sure it dries because you don't want to have any like sticky matted parts, but you want the hairspray sort of middle through ends here. Okay, my hair's gotten so long, it's out of the frame, but I'm spraying more here. I don't necessarily need a lot of hairspray here since I'm going to loosen and soften my roots up a little bit as I'm explaining this I'm realizing. There are so many steps to this, so this is a good tutorial. I am using the blacks, clear, elastics, so wrapped up in my clip, so these are nice and wide they're, not those really really skinny ones that you see at the drugstore and you can use them more than once. So these are clear: blacks is spelled BL a X and you can find black Brown clear, maybe blonde, but I'm not totally sure on that. So don't quote me so now: I'm going to pull the hair into the bun, so I have my clear elastic available for me to grab the key when pulling it up is to hold everything really loosely. So I think a lot of times: women, overthink. Okay, I'm doing my hair. I want it to be right. I'M gon na hold it really firm, but then you get a really tight bun and that's not what we want want something loose: soft romantic, pretty flattering all of the above, so I'm going to keep my hands open like this. For the majority of the time, the hair length I'm working with is about here, hair much longer might get a little bit more challenging, but follow all of these steps. I'M taking you through and see if you can just kind of tweak it to sort of do another Bend and I like to have the clear elastic in my hand. So it's ready to go. I'M holding everything very loosely with my hands open, going back to sort of the top center and then folding the hair over pulling the elastic around twice and then stretching it up and down so you've got the button kind of looks severe right, hold your hands open Again, go right above your ears, soften the hair above your ears. If you want to pull some hairs out, you can do that. All of this is supposed to look really casual and then the key to making sure the bun looks. Nice and soft is to loosen up the nape, so that adds a lot of softness to the whole. Look more lived-in soft bun, less cheerleader. If you know what I mean so once you have everything kind of stretched, you want to make sure you can't really see under the button. So if you need to grab bobby, pin and sort of stretch, the bun up and down and then put a couple strategic pins in to hold everything in place, do that, if you don't need to do that great we're going to check this side, see how that's Looking you need to put a pin in here, so it doesn't look too like clamshell. You can do that and then finish with a good bit of hairspray, not too much, because you wanted to sort of soften and look casual but enough to where your hair's not going to fall out. So I hope this tutorial was helpful and if you do this, I would love to see it on Instagram make sure you tag me in the picture and use hashtag small things: hair

Cheyenne Campbell: Yes!! Thank you so much! I have similar hair to yours and I’ve always envied women who can do these effortless looking buns (usually out and about when they’ve got no mirror or products and it ends up looking like runway hair :-P) but following your video for the first time I’ve got a bun I feel happy leaving the house with Thanks, you rock!!

Taking Back Angie: I didn't have time to wash my hair this morning and I was in a rush. I thought I had your instructions committed to memory but I could quote it the bun to look the way I wanted to. Thank go for the ability to review your videos again and again! Total hair saver!!

Charley Nicholls: Literally the first messy bun tutorial I've been able to follow-and it actually looks good at the end!! Thank you☺️

Dawn Harmon-O'Connor: This is THE best messy bun tutorial I've found - and I've watched many! It's detailed, slow, doable. While my hair is a bit longer than yours, the basics get me where I need to go and outline details I hadn't noticed - thanks so much! PS apparently I need to update my profile pic.

Shannon Harrison: This was the first tutorial that was actually helpful in creating this messy bun look! Thank you so much! Lol literally life changing!!

Nicole Lawson: Hands down, the best messy bun out there! I love your bun! :)

Toni Orwig: I do my messy bun almost the same and everyone always says it looks nice!! Love it ❤❤

Heidi Moles: I have tried video after video of messy bun tutorials and I've never been able to follow one so easy and it actually turn out cute!!! Love this video!

Mindy Wyse: I'm a stylist also but sometimes get in a rut with my own everyday styling. Watching you has brought some fun back into my life

Patty R: First I want to say I love your messy bun!! Secondly for those of you who don’t want to hear all the talking about other things use your finger and fast forward until you see where she starts and watch from there and stop being so nasty. I watch a lot of videos about hair and makeup and most of the women talk (some more than others) and sometimes I don’t have time to listen to them but I’m thankful that they took the time to do the video to show me what I wanted to know. Sadly it seems the more people use these videos, social media so forth and so on the ruder we seem to be. Try to remember 2 things: 1st it’s a FREE tutorial for you (some of these people don’t make any money for sharing) and 2nd...if you can’t say something nice don’t say anything!! I’m fairly certain she has feelings too!! I’m sorry for going on and on but we need to stop being so negative about the simple things. Thanks again for your help with my hair!!

BAsh90: Your "bad hair day" would be my "dream come true hair day" :) Been following your blog/tutorials for a couple years now and they never disappoint!

Carla Smyers: I have super thin and fine hair and this is the ONLY messy bun that works for me. Love your tutorials!

H T: I finally did a messy bun that actually looks good with my face shape thanks to your tutorial!

Karen Sue Pohlmeier: Wow, that's amazing!!! I have tried on many occasions to do this but I failed. Thank you for going into details about this!

Sares72737: This is hands down the best messy bun I've seen!! I think you need to show someone with long hair how to do your messy bun and get them to post a tutorial because I have really long hair and none of the tutorials I've seen for long hair are anywhere near as good as yours ☹️

αndrσmєdα: her messy dirty hair is 10000000000 times better than my clean "styled" hair! :)

Wendy D: Hi Kate! Thank you for explaining the type of products you used. That's what I struggle with, not knowing which I need to use. How do you take out the elastic, with this style, without damaging the hair?

Amna Trabelsi: this one is easier 1- make a regular bun 2-sleep 3- here it is a messy bun

Twist 926: ugh finally i was looking for tutorials for thin hair the options were so limited and i couldn’t do it but finally i found this video and first try i did it and loved it there was a long strip i forgot in the back and i found it was a low for me so i did it a second time and its perfect thank you so much 10/10 recommended

Mel Smith: I think the video is great! You explained everything well in great detail. Very helpful! Tired of my everyday jaw clip bun.

sbrichcreek: This is the most helpful and easy messy bun tutorial. Thanks!

Sexy After 50: The folding and the "softening" are the key, I think. I'm going to try this method! Thanks for the video. --Kay

samiamisme: what serum do you use to smooth frizzy from sleeping? love your videos. I'm terrible at girly things no matter how hard I try. the details really help me. thx!....I tried this "do" last night and it worked perfectly! The most volume I've had in a bun. Loved it, got compliments and loved the fact that I didn't have to worry if a hair was out of place! Thank you!

Meredith: You are the hairstyling queen! I feel like I have so many problems with my hair and just can't figure out what's gone wrong. In winter the problems are more severe but my hair seems generally consistent in sucking. Maybe it's the Utah weather or not great products (Herbal Essence, Pravana for color protect and Aussie for moisture)but my hair is dry which leads to static and crazy baby hairs around my part that want to stick straight up. My roots never seem clean...I scrub my scalp aggressively with nails and still come out of the shower weighed down with product build up. I end up slathering Paul Mitchell Foaming Pommade all over as a last effort to keep the frizz and split ends manageable. Also, how much hair is normal to lose in a day? Do certain tools help with breakage and hair loss? Help Kate! ~Meredith

Tiffany Smith: casual bun- bobby pins, dry shampoo, a degree in hair dressing, a prayer

Abbey yyy: I didn’t know there was so much work put into a bun love it!

Jessica H: Kate I think your hair looks so good to start with even though you think it's a flop :) Can you tell us how to get the loose wave look like this or do a tutorial please?

Katarzyna Stępniak: This is the first video which learns me HOW TO DO MESSY BUN. And my messy bun is perfect Thank you so much

Elizabeth T.: This is exactly how I do my messy bun!!! I have curly hair so I can skip the prep for the most part. I've had people ask me, too haha

Lisa Gates: I can't believe how many people are bothered enough by this talk-through style of video. There are plenty of videos that will rush through and simply show the steps, if that's what you like, go watch that. I for one LOVE Kate's personality and life, and I watch her videos because I enjoy that style. If you don't like something, that's fine. But keep the rude comments to yourself please.

Willette B: Love these hair tutorials. I've worn short hair most of my adult life because it was easy to get ready for work as an RN, plus I'm a wife & mom. Strange, but I've always been complimented for my hair & choice of styles. I'm thankful for great stylist who took the time to make sure I loved the hair cut. Now I'm retired & wearing my hair one length & longer. I appreciate your willingness to show how to wear a longer length. Longer hair means fewer hair cuts, great for my frugality.

Sarah: This is the best tutorial I have found! So easy to do and looks great, thank you PS You're very pretty

Saaraa Adam: this looks wonderful! definitely going to try this out.

Brittany Parmer: My hair is super long now (I grow it out to donate and it's almost at my perfect "donation length") almost to my butt & I can never seem to get my messy bun to work with me at this length but it never occurred to me "to get a messy bun you need a mess". I just tried a messy bun after teasing and applying dry shampoo and it's perfect. Thanks!!

Julia Bontempi: Only messy bun that works for layered hair (Or in my case, short choppy layers). Took a few tries but that comes with every hairstyle because nobody has the same hair but I got it to work. Thank you so so much! <3

Lindsay Augustine: I’m a stylist in Pennsylvania working in a summit salon under lots of professional training with Redken!! and absolutely loved this video!! Description was on point!!! So useful!!

sophiee pendlebury: this is the only bun that has ever worked for me!! i’ve watched about 100 videos no joke ahahahha love you and thank you xx

Julie Carson: this has to be the easiest bun i have seen by far. it definately looks like one even i can do, thanks for this tutorial

Hanuse85: I thought you just thew it up in a bun. I had no clue you guys had to actually work to make it look messy.

Angie Smith: Your bad hair day is all of our's dream hair day! Great tutorial. I always do an underside dutch braid into a bun and it is getting a little old...I need to change up my go to bun! Thanks for the tutorial.

Candace Hicks: I love your tutorials! ❤

Jillian Knight: I'd really love to get my hair cut like yours! Can you do a tutorial at your next cut appt? I can see you have some layers for texturing? Anyways, my hair is about the same length, and would love an update to my all one length, flat, heavy hair-do that I'm currently (not) rocking. I have a lot of hair but it is very fine, so I think layers and structure would do some good. Any advice would be greatly appreciated! Love your videos! Thanks!

Crissy Young: I've been trying to do a messy bun all my life. I have naturally curly thick hair. This worked first try!!! I'm so excited!!

Linda: Kate as always thanks so much - you have taught me SO much about doing my hair!!

Jordan Jank: This is by far the easiest way to get a messy bun... Now it doesn't have to be so complicated

G Tyson: Thanks for the tutorial. I have the worst trouble styling my hair....I think I never really learned the proper techniques and products, but your videos are really helping me step up my hair game. As a side note I find your voice super soothing. lol

HELENation 🐼💕: MAN.... everything you do looks soooooooooooooo pretty!!!! Your hair already looks amazing on you even before you finish all the steps <3

Serena Gleason: Thank you I have been wanting to get a messy bun without having to let it get messy throughout the day instead have it start that way!!

Chillivata: I don't mind the talking, she seems lovely and I think this is the absolute best messy bun tutorial I've seen. Props!

Lotte: I always fail in my messy buns, but never thought about putting hairspray/texture spray/dry shampoo in. My hair is naturally pretty smooth so my bun just never looks messy

Verena Miller: Thanks for the great explanation. Really appreciate the video and the trick with the dry shampoo and air spray before doing the bun.

Gemma Simmons: Love this messy bun. Thank you

Esther Ethereal: Thank you for your time on youtube! I always learn so much from you :) And as random side note you also look really good when you wear anything with stripes

Beck Cetera: Can I just say how PERFECT your hair looks before the tutorial even starts - dreams!!

ladyflimflam: The problem with this method is that if you don't cut out the elastic taking it down tends to trash the ends. My hair is waist length so I treasure and protect my ends, maybe more than people who wear their hair short like you do. I find that a looped ponytail is kinder. Stretch the loop and pin it "randomly". Either wrap the ends mostly around the base before pinning or just twist and pin wherever if there is good bend in the hair.

Jaymk87: I've been trying FOREVER to attempt the messy bun. Thank you for breaking it down for an idiot like me.

Michelle Stewart: very cute! I always wondered how to do the messy bun, now I know how

Laura Ann: So cute! What do you mean you're having a bad hair day!? I would kill for my hair to look like this❤️

Virginia Owensby: Great tutorial. I hope I can do it. My hair is longer, fine and about half the volume it use to be.

Emigh's number: You're soo cute! Thanks for sharing this with us! I'm gonna have a go at it! Happy holidays 2017

jackie4194191: I have been trying to do a messy bun and despite my attempts never seem to get it ....... Until NOW!! Thank you it will be my staple hair up do from now on Xx

Denise Douglas: Thank you!!!!! U have this messy bun to perfection!!!!

Seniora_ Jendy: It's funny how many compliments we get with messy buns. they look great.

Laurie Champion: Love the tip: gotta start with a mess.never knew why my bun never looked messy. Mine never looks neat either!

M R: actual bun tutorial starts at 5:48

Kim Jackson: Love this. I've just subscribed to your channel. Going to try this xx

Elizabeth Manke: This is the first video of yours I’ve seen and it certainly won’t be the last!! Amazing!! Thanks so much for sharing this. Also, what hair spray are you using here?

Dawn Kelly Gets Real: Wow you made that so simple! Thanks!!

Ewa Wer: Jak zawsze pięknie!

Belle Fille: I wish my hair was like that on a bad hair day! Your hair is beautiful Kate!

Lu Kubin: I have thick, straight blonde hair that just won't let me style it what so ever. But this, THIS is the first messy bun tutorial that ever worked!!!!! I think the reason why it worked for me is that you told us to tilt the head backwards. Most of the tutorials i watched put the hair up with out tilting the head back. I already got compliments for this haird do! Thanks for being a great teacher

jennaxoxox: I have struggled with doing this without a million pins, I can actually now do it in a minute instead of pinning it for like a year everytime thanks ❤

Erin-Clare Boulet: every messy bun tutorial i watch is like impossible for me like wtf is wrong with me i cant do it

Taking Back Angie: Omg for whatever reason the messy bun has been sort of a lost cause for me. Thank you so much for explaining something that should have been a no brainier for me!

ssbkd: This is the most perfect step-by-step hair tutorial I have ever seen.

Paige Grant: This is really the only messy bun tutorial that has ever worked for me.

Goose: tysm I finally found a simple easy one!! my new go to!!

Karen Patterson: I love wearing messy buns.I get tons of compliments on them

Jennifer Ellis: Best messy bun tutorial I've seen, and trust me I've seen them all!!! lol

Going Banaynays: Looks so easy......I think I over think the finished product. And the Amika texture spray is great, but I favor the Tweak-d 2XL Fiber Lift Dry Volumizing Spray. With my longer, fine hair I find it works better, lasts longer, and it takes soooo little to achieve amazing volume.

Terri Gehrke: Thank you for this tutorial it actually worked for me more then all those other ones but I had to tweak it a bit because I have hair to middle of back any suggestions

Peyton McQuilkin: omg my hair is down to my waist and I've been looking for a way to do my messy bun without half of my hair hanging out and I did this (with a few of my own tweaks for it to fit my length of hair) and it's the first one that has worked in a loong time

Trin Murray: Thanks this is a really cute bun. My hair is probably too short for this right now but I will have to save this video.

Elvia May: I've got it. I was trying this about a week. It's not that hard. Thnk you❤

Brenna Lofthouse: Cute but I love how the lazy/messy bun really isn't lazy haha

Veronique Ramirez: AWESOME! Going to try this for class Monday!

Captain J Doodle: Well... I've just realised I'm a super lazy girl then! I was looking for a lazy girl hair style and this is too much effort for me today haha! Damn it.

Row6Seat8: Honey, if that’s a bad hair day for you, the rest of us should just shave our heads and call it a day you’re a beautiful lady and your videos are great.

jenna leskie: Actual bun making starts at 5:45

Chloe K: I like how messy buns r supposed to be messy and casual but it takes alot to get an actual good looking one

A Country Life: Wow, I can't believe how many steps there are to making a mess. I definitely need to use more product on my stick straight hair.

CorgiLvr: I'm cracking up. I thought your hair looked cute BEFORE you put it in the bun!! Haha!! Thanks for the tutorial.

Sally Asif: It's almost a year that I m watching messy hair bun tutorials but never tried it
