Curly Hair Updo Tutorial - Choose Your Own Adventure

Here's a simple updo for curly hair that's exactly how I wear my hair on a regular day. It's a bit of a choose-your-own-adventure style as I'm never sure how it will end up looking, and you can create your own version to suit your waves and curls.

Christina xx

Either I'm Christina from Harriman's comm and I really actually don't know what sort of tutorial I'm gon na do. Today. I had just filmed another one and I thought, while I'm still wearing on my makeup and I'm I like to set up. I should film another and it's messy, hair and just show you another quick way that I would put my hair up. So I think I'm gon na do two braids, but what's the tutorial and you'll get to see what style it is at the end, let's get started so often so many my tutorials start up this way. I really sort of think about how I want my hair to fit before I do a style and I think, that's kind of a different way than I approach styling hair, especially if you've got curly hair. It'S never exactly simple. You can't always just follow a tutorial. Every time because your curls are different every time and it's the same with mine, a real mix of waves and curls and fries. So today, I'm gon na kind of work with that and in do maybe like a little messy braid updo, which is something that I would wear normally just to catch up with friends just to do stuff at home. Whatever I'm doing just when I want my hair all up and out of my face, my other favorite is my quick up to which top knot, which I will link as well, but if I want something a looks slightly fancier, this is what I would do. I think let's get going so. The first thing I do is just decide where I want my hair to sit at the front where's looking good. So do I look better parted this way, am I getting more volume this side just check yourself and decide which way? Your curls looking best like I've, got a really flat frizzy section here. I probably want to cover that up. So maybe somewhere likes not quite sin, not quite deep part yeah. I have a play. You'Ll work out exactly where your hair is gon na sit, I'm gon na put it a little bit side and a trick for side part. Is I like to go back a little bit diagonally? I think that helps to give more volume and curly hair, because otherwise you end up with quite a flat section if you take a side part traditionally down here. So I take my side part back across diagonally across my head, which helps to give me more volume evenly on either side of my head really thing. You notice, especially with curly, hair, it's harder to get volume at the roots. So where your part, your hair, makes all the difference. The second thing I decide when I'm doing an updo is, if I want any, lays out around my face. The answer is usually yes, I like having a few pieces around my face, so I just would lift up my hair a little bit just grab these loose layers out now, so that I don't accidentally incorporate them into the braid, which makes them a little bit harder To pull out later just makes the final styling a bit easier. So for this one I'm going to try and do two braids, I'm going to do an actual Dutch braid on one side, but just a regular plat, 3 strand braid on the other. So I've divided my hair into about two thirds, so I've got 1/3 left out for this regular plat and this part for the braid, which I'm just I don't know how I'm just gon na rest it on my shoulder. While I do the regular braid first - and this part is really simple - just splitting it into three and just doing a regular braid, of course, I'm always going to try and stretch it out so right at the bottom here. Holding the end, I'm just going to pull it the sides when you see this in straight hair, a really smooth hair. It'S really easy to stretch it out, so curls can be a little bit harder. So sometimes you know I find you need to massage the braid. A little bit and actually just pull it specific sections and just adjust your grip on the bottom of the braid. That will help. Will you stretch it out a little bit easier and I'm sitting use a bobby pin to hold the end of the braid, because my curls are messy and they're going to hold themselves in place anyway, if you, if your hair starts to unravel just grab a little Bit elastic to hold that in place all right, yeah, the rest is I'm going to start a Dutch braid up around the top here. The trick when you're braiding messy hair is that you want to make sure that you're not pulling or tugging too hard. This can also just cause a little bit damage to your hair, as you try and separate sections that really want to be together, so just be a little bit gentle and if you find that you're pulling in you can't get it apart, just grab in more hair. So across under and then under and on the next cross under I'm going to pick in some hair up at the front here and add that into the braid and then on the back. I'M just going to add a little section in there as well, and really what I'm trying to do is just add in kind of larger sections, mainly because it makes it a little bit quicker to do the style. And I also know, then, that I'm not going to get too many tangles having to try and separate my hair out. That'S right, leaving these layers out now makes it a little bit easier because once they're all into the braid kind of pulling up, the right section can be tricky and that's it. I think I've got all that hair added into the braid and I'm just going to keep braiding down to the end. That'S getting too far, Rach bring it back over. Your shoulder makes it easier to do and just stretching out any sections, especially at the top. Here. I like them to be a little bit more stretched out so that the top of the braid is a little bit more standout. Now, let's put these two together to make just a quick, simple updo, I'm going to take the braid first fold the ends under and pin it across here now. If your head is a lot longer than mine, you might want to roll it around into a bun or if your hair's shorter, just fold it a little bit closer behind your ear, and you can finish it there, just workout with what your hair looks like and How long it is as to what's going to work best and now we're going to take this braid across as well and connect them here at the top. With a bobby pin and fold this under here, they're trying to tuck all those little loose ends underneath so that they're all hidden away. Now I still can see your few pieces, so I'm trying to grab a bobby pin, and normally I don't open my bobby pins. You know I just like to weave them through a style, but for something like this, I open the pin a little bit, connect it to that hair, that's sticking out, and then that makes it really easy to push that in and hold those loose layers in place. Just like that now I'm just going to connect these a little bit better on this side, because I can see I've got a little bit of loose hair here and at the top, so just grab a couple of extra pins and I'm going to secure that one Down that way, and I'm going to come in underneath just to hold this section in place, and so this is my quick little braided updo now I know I am quicker braiding, but the more you practice you'll be just as quick. I promise and once you get to know your curls and know your hair, you get to work out exactly how you like it to sit, and so you can just create a couple of little twists, a couple of quick braids and you can put it up easily And if you can't French, braid and you're still struggling with this style, just do a regular braid start. I would in fact, do maybe just section your hair here and do a braid there and connect it through, but just by doing three strand braids, you get such a good look. So if you're still struggling with the Dutch braid styles or the French braid styles, just start with plats and do a little updo and people will love it and you'll love it as well, because it's really quick and it stays up comfortably all day long if you're Still here with me and you're gon na try this style. I would love to see it tag me at Harrow, Matt's, on Instagram and over on Harrow Montcalm. I got lots of more tutorials and tips. Whatever your hair type is also if you haven't subscribed yet. Amanda Riviera: This is very similar to how I used to do my hair in summer. My hair was waist length though, so I would wrap it around into a low bun, but I loved how it kept the hair off my neck and away from my ears, and wouldn't move around. Now... Ah... Well, I did the World's Greatest Shave this year so I'm learning how to deal with very little hair, lol. I love having the sides and back short, but I'm growing out the top and the curls have started coming back in. So that's a new adventure.

Melissa Jeffrey: Learning to love and learn more about my curls. Thank you for your videos!

Susan Johnson: Very pretty Christina, will try this one. I always struggle with stretching out braids with mycurly hair.

Lisa Zanatta: I love this and I am going to try as well too try and do my layers as well with hairspray included for summer too and I will plaits too very elegant up do as well :) :)

Dalia Camarillo: I love it!!
