How To Style Fine/Thin Curly Hair (Low Density Curls) For Thicker Looking Hair

How to style fine/thin/low density/biracial/ multiethnic curls

I made this video after many requests by mothers looking for assistance in styling their biracial children's hair, but I thought it may actually be helpful to go through all my steps for anyone that may have fine/thin and low density hair as well as this can definitely apply to so many people regardless of age and ethnicity.

For the products, I tried to feature some of my holy grail products that I have used off and on for at least 5 years. These are not the only products I use, but these are definitely staples for me and they are on the affordable side as well as accessible in many regions. The main tip I would stress with hair products for texture like mine, less is more! and water based products are key. I always try to stay away from creams or soufflé products that are on the heavy side as they just weigh down my curls. I hope you find this video helpful!

So if you have fine low-density curls like I do, and your hair falls flat, naturally and kind of see-through, I'm going to show you some tips and some products that you can use to help you get the most volume out of your hair. Now I know curly hair is all very different, so I have my hair just thrown back in a bun to show you my texture a little bit when it is in a bun, so you can see just how fine it is and how much of my scalp You can actually see because my hair is quite scarce in some areas. You can really see my scalp pretty much throughout my head when my hair is damp and that's just because I do have low density hair. Now, in my opinion, I like to go for products that are really not gon na weigh down my hair, and I don't go too crazy about getting a lot of curl definition. I go more for volume because I do have low density hair to me. If I'm going for super defined curls, I'm going to have less volume and it's gon na be a lot flatter and essentially more see-through looking so this product here is a 3 minute miracle, moist kindig conditioner, it's like a holy grail for me. I always have it in my shower. I always travel with it because it's super lightweight and affordable, and I already washed my hair with this prior to filming, but I just wanted to show you that sometimes you can actually add it into a water bottle with um. Did I say water bottle? No, no! That came out right, anyways, um mix it with some water and sometimes I'll use that as a leave-in conditioner as well. If I'm traveling, I don't want to pack too many products, but right now, I'm actually just saturating. My hair in just pure water, um, just to start the styling process for this video and, of course, I use a wide tooth comb just to run through my hair to get any tangles out again having fine low density curls. I don't get a lot of volume or a lot of tangles. I don't have a lot of hair fighting with each other, since you know, I guess, there's good and bad parts. This is a leave-in conditioner that I would highly recommend for anyone with hair texture similar to mine. It is very, very lightweight, but it's also moisturizing and it smells divine. It'S most edible it's by beautiful textures, it's their tangle, taming, leave-in conditioner, and it's definitely a holy grail for me and it it's under $ 10. I would say it's around $ 6 or $ 7 and you can find it at most Beauty Supply stores. I mix up my products now and then, but I've been using this, I would say, for the past at least five years um and now I'm going in with a little bit of Mixed, Chicks, leave-in conditioner, now look how little I use. That is exactly why I only buy these sample packs and you can get those at Target and it's really affordable versus spending like twenty dollars on the full size. When you have low density, fine curls, you don't need a lot of that product because I feel like it is a little bit on the heavy side and I actually mix it with water. When I apply it to my hair now, you'll see I'm only applying it to the very tips of my hair, because I want the tips to stay hydrated. That'S where I have some color in my hair, and it needs a little bit extra care and hold to get that little bit of definition I like especially with the blonde um when it dries for me. I, like some definition surrounding my face kind of framing my face, but everything else can be wild. I really don't care um. Now, I'm going in with some paper towel just to speed up the drying time. For me, I love to air dry. My hair, I get better volume with it. I know some people look at way more volume with um a diffuser, but for me it's quite the opposite. Now, when I'm about, I would say, like 80 % by, I always like to check my tips to see if they're looking a little bit frizzy and if they are, I will go in with a little bit more of the leave-in conditioner and, as you can see, I'M just slightly touching the tips with the conditioner just to and force them to stay put and go back to being, not frizzy. Now, if you don't have time for air drying or it's just not the season for air drying, if you're in you know colder places, then I would say obviously make sure there's a diffuser nozzle on your blow dryer and if you can get a blow dryer that Has a cool setting? That'S obviously a lot better for your hair to avoid the heat damaged um. That can happen over a long period of time if you're using a lot of heat on your hair, and you don't have to spend a lot like this was 15 dollars and it's doing the job quite fine, so yeah you don't have to invest a lot in A blow dryer in my opinion, once it has the diffuser nozzle you'll, be good. Then you really want to go in with your fingertips and really shake at the roots. That'S major for me to get some of the volume going, so I just kind of go in and shake shake shake. As you can see, the diffuser didn't give me a whole bunch of volume. This part right here is where I get all of my volume happening, and this is, of course the afro pick you go in with it all over your head and you lift at the roots. So you just kind of place it in lift move it around place. It in lift place it in the lift and another thing that I highly encourage is to scrunch your curls. I forgot to mention that, but when my hair is wet and right before I leave it to dry to air dry, i scrunch it like crazy just to encourage the curls to kind of pop up, and I like to do the same after using the afro pick As well now, if you have a similar texture to mine, you know that you don't get many curls many days out of your curls, but one way that we can at least attempt to is by sleeping with the pineapple hairstyle. So it's just by doing what you see here, putting all your hair to the very front of your head and then just using a loose elastic or scrunch is actually better. But I can find it for this video and then covering your head, covering your head with a satin bonnet or just sleep on a satin pillowcase and then in the morning. You obviously pull it off, because who really wants to wear that in public and then just shake shakeshake and you may need to add a little bit of water just to kind of make. It look a little bit more refreshed and if you do of course, apply the scrunching motion, of course, and you can even add a little leaving as well. I usually get maybe two days max out of my curls three days. If I'm being lazy - and I don't mind how wild it is, so if you enjoyed this video, please give it a thumbs up and subscribe for more, and I will see you guys next time, thanks for watching bye,

It's Me Mrs. Ruby: Finally! I find someone with my curly hair type! Excited to try your tips! Thx!

Soul DeOro: Yes! Finally finding tutorials with fine curly hair. The struggle for volume is such a task. I often pin my hair down.

Taja: I am SO glad to have found this video - this is the first channel I've come across that really speaks to struggles I've had with styling my fine curly hair, and the tips you give totally did the trick! It's my first day trying out the afro pick for big curls and volume, and I have already gotten so many compliments at work! Thank you, Charmsie <3

kimeek16: Omg you are the curl guru I've been looking for! We have the same curly/ thin hair texture and I need help with my curl definition!

fhbrooklyn Henry: You have no idea how much I appreciate your videos for us "low density" curly hair folks !

Wendy Young-Swanson: Low density ! I have never heard that before. That perfectly explains my hair! Thank you so much for this tutorial

Toni Gomez: Thank you so much for this tutorial! I have fallen into some bad habits, including using my hands to build volume from my roots even though I HAVE a pick and I know what it's for. Also a great reminder to natural dry... I have been hurrying things along with a diffuser event though I have plenty of time in the morning to natural dry! YOU ROCK!

narniagirl 4ever: Hi Charmsie, first I want to say it makes me really happy (as a white girl) to see all you beautiful black girls finding ways to make your hair look absolutely drop-dead gorgeous!!! I am finding help for myself, too, which is a surprise. I've always had reddish hair with a curl/frizz to it and it was also thin and fine. I've gotten some help with the DevaCurl videos, but my scalp does show through, so I am hoping your tips can help me. Thanks for posting these, I can't imagine all the happy, curly-haired girls/women walking around now! What a gift we've been given with our curly hair!

Sam Starr: Oh my goodness I don't think I've ever subscribed to someone so fast! Finally! My hair is exactly the same length, thickness, and curl as yours. I have always struggled with my hair falling flat and I don't know why it never occurred to me to use the pick after my hair was dry but I tried it today and my hair looked bomb all day long! I also went out and bought some of the products you used and can't wait to try them out! Keep doing what your doing :)

Mariah’s Wholesome Kitchen: I have fine curly hair too. It's hard to create volume & prevent frizz. I use the OGX coconut curl cream, the Marc Anthony sulfate free curl products (in small amounts) and definitely a pick to boost my roots! Great video I love it.

Anisa Noor: Nothing beats the feeling of coming across a video that relates to you! I have the same/ very similar hair texture and i often struggled to keep my curls intact and long lasting ( it always ended up falling flat!). As silly as it sounds I often cried and stressed over my hair and couldn't understand why it was so different to everyone elses (they have thicker hair) but yes, understanding what your hair type is and how to style it makes it you appreciate it more! Thanks a bunch!!!

Jazz: This is so refreshing the first person I have come across in decade with similar hair to mine. Thank you so much for sharing much needed advice for ladies with finer hair. Keep the tutorials coming.

Tegan Carr: Amazing, thank you so much! I have never see hair that looks so much like mine and I can't tell you how much that means to me.

WinstonChaychel: I shared this with my mama She has the same hair, I hope it helps her

mariah: To think that I was the only mixed girl with curly hair that was fine!!! Such a relief to know that I'm not alone

The Not So Sweet Lolita: Love the video! Super awesome to see someone with similar hair! I used to use the 3 minute miracle too but it has a lot of silicones. Once I replaced it with a silicone free deep conditioner and I have way more volume

Jo Anne: Thank you so much! My hair is also fine, thin, and curly and I've been looking for tips just like these! I'm buying all of those products and getting myself an afro pick!

S.K.: Very helpful, and I love your style, I'm gonna try this style out today :)

Chantel Cook: WOW!! What a great video. You should definately do more tutiorials on here. It was so refreshing to see that someone else had the same bun as I do when I pull my curly hair up. It is so fine that I can see my scalp and have to spend tons of time brushing my hair back to cover my scalp. Thank you for all the tips! You are a life saver! (hair saver!)

Cait Valentin: THANK YOU SO MUCH FOR THIS VIDEO YOU BEAUTIFUL HUMAN BEING!! I now have hope for my thin, curly hair!

It’sJennaSkeete S: My curly are fine and it’s unbelievable.. I’m so grateful that I stumbled on this video So helpful❤️❤️

Mare Ferral: Thanks for your video!!! The way you showed how your hair looks wet is the same as mine. My roots are also very visible and my hair looks so thin when wet. All of your tips are so great! I also hate having see through hair, and I get that a lot if I use gel or other styling cream. My hair does tend to get frizzy if I shake and pouf it out too much. And I like a more clumpy curl. Any tips????

Loving Prada: Same hair texture and density as mine. Thank you sooo much!!

Cheyenne Perritt: I understand the fine hair struggle! Love this video!!

Melanie Perez: Your hair is so beautiful! I love how you maintain and take care of your hair, so amazing and helpful for those with similar fine hair ❤️ Thanks for the recommendations but those do have silicon :( do you recommend any leave ins that are silicon free that are great for fine hair?

Moutou1992: When you pick up your hair for volume, does your hair flat down during the day...or does it stay all day long like this ? I'm really struggling to get volume around my roots...

Mary Strong: Can you pleeeease do a video on your makeup routine in this video? it looks so dewy and natural, I love it! And these are some great tips, I think we have pretty similar hair and I'm always looking to get as much volume as humanly possible. : D Time to bust out the pick!

Cynthia G: You are so beautiful! I've been Working on my curls for a few weeks now & I just love finding videos of curly hair like this. QBMJ0304: Whenever I shake my hair to get more volume like you do, it only stays for about 5 minutes and then falls down and looks flat again.. So i shake my hair every 2 minutes and everyone thinks i'm crazy :D Does anyone have a tip on how to keep that volume?

Leticia Clausen: i am experiencing tension allopecia due to all the tight hair extensions i wore for almost 15 years. now, i am done with extensions. i have fine curly hair, my hairline is the one most affected. i loved your tutorial, it really helped me withwhat products to use and how to use them. my question is: what do i tell the hairstylist to how to cut my hair? i need layers!!! lots of layers for volume!!! is that all i need to say? i am so afraid to go to a hair salon!!!

Francoise Hovivian: So glad I found your channel! My hair is the same "type" as yours, very similar, very low density and thin, a little bit longer, and I color it in blonde. Only recently have I started to work with it. Before that I would just put it in a ponytail, which made the curls become stretched and disappear. But now I want to show off my curls and pump up volume as much as it is even possible with my hair. I watched your video(s) and i'm getting there. Still not fluffy enough, but I'll learn the "technique". I'll continue following you!

Gloria: THANK YOU so much for your video! I have been looking for tips for fine, thin curly hair. I have 3a curls so trying to make my hair look full has always been a problem. I went out and bought a pick and it really made a difference. Only thing is that cuz I have 3a curls after a while it will lose that voluminous look so I do have to use a little bit of hairspray to give my hair some texture to hold the volume. Thanks again for the tips!

Aida Prado: Great video! Thank you for posting. I have similar hair type to yours and appreciate the tips! I will be looking at other videos you have here to learn more.

Clorox Bleach: this helps so much! finally someone with my hair type

Amanda J: Excellent tutorial! <3

Emerald Eyes: Love your lip color in this video! The pineapple style works for volume (for me) but I’ve heard that always putting it up at night can be bad for tension on the hair, at the crown.

Methuli Nanayakkara: Finally a YouTuber who has THIN curly hair that can show me a routine thank you so much God bless your tips are so helpful

Karma De Santos: Thank so much for this!! I have super fine hair also and struggle with shape and volume
