The disconnected undercut was popularized by shows like Boardwalk Empire or Peaky Blinders. It's a very classic style, but it can be modern at the same time.

How do you achieve this cut?

1. Basically, you want a distinct line between the long hair on top and the short sides.

2. Once you're done with the sides, you want to cut the top of your hair to an even length.

The advantage of this haircut is that it can be styled in many ways; you can create a vintage look, or a 90's look, or a rocker look, and it really all depends on what products you use.

WAYS TO STYLE:

1. Use Pomade.

2. You also need a high-quality comb.

3. You need a hair dryer.

Remember to always start with freshly washed hair, otherwise, you may not achieve the desired result.

Welcome back to the Gentleman's Gazette In this video we talk about the disconnected undercut hairstyle and how you get from this to this.. The disconnected undercut is one of the most popular hairstyles today, and it was popularized by shows like Boardwalk Empire or lately Peaky Blinders., The best part about it is that you can style it in many different ways.. Apart from that, it always makes a statement.. It'S a very classic style, but it can be modern at the same time.. So what exactly is a disconnected undercut? Basically, it's defined as closely shaven sides with long hair on top and no or minimal fade.. In this case, I have enough for a side part, and I have it in a very classic style. That'S more gentleman oriented from the 1920's and 30's.. So before you can style it. You need to have the right cut.. This is my hair when it's unstyled., Not quite what you expected, isn't it. So how do you explain this haircut to your barber? The best way to do it is to bring a picture of what you want, ideally, and if he cannot recreate that it's time to change your barber. In case a family member or a friend is cutting your hair. Here is what you should do. First, you need a clipper and you should choose the number one attachment which is the closest to getting a shave.. I had my last haircut about two weeks ago, so my hair's a little longer, but usually with clipper number 1. I get exactly the right length, so it grows out nicely.. Basically, you want a distinct line between the long hair on top and the short sides.. So, as you can see here, it has to be straight. In order to get that result. I need to have my long hair up, so I can get the proper line. To do that. You can either use a clip or a hair band to just keep them up, so you can make sure everything is straight. Once you're done with the sides. You want to cut the top of your hair to an even length., In my case, right now. It'S about 9cm or 3 1/2 inches.. I would suggest not to go shorter than 7cm or 2.75 inches, because otherwise the distinction between the short sides and your top just is not as pronounced anymore, and it's not a disconnected undercut. Personally with my thick coarse hair, that's as long as I can go. Otherwise. I have trouble styling it.. If you have finer, hair or thinner hair, you can definitely go a lot longer and still get a nice undercut style.. The advantage of this haircut is that it can be styled in many ways. You can create a vintage look or a 90's look or a rocker look, and it really all depends on what products you use.. The style was popular with close cut sides in the 1910's, 20's 30's and the 40's. In the late 40's and 50's. They had a style, the so-called quiff top.. Today'S disconnected undercut is a combination of these styles and there's also a lot of different influences in there, and basically you can do whatever you want. To learn more about the history. Please check out our in-depth guide here.. So how do you style this kind of hair 1.? Well, the most classic way is to use pomade.. Pomade is basically a wax based on paraffin or glycerin, and it's very thick and I used to do it when I started out with this hairstyle.. The problem is some people get what is called'' pomade acne'', so I ended up with lots of zits all over my forehead and it was a mess. On top of that. It greased up our pillow sheets and my wife complained constantly. That aside, if the strongest pomade wasn't strong enough for my hair and it was wavy. So overall pomade was not the solution. To learn more about pomade. Please check out our in-depth guide on our website here.. If you have thinner hair, you may get away with a styling cream that provides a little bit of hold and you can shape it in any way, shape or form.. For me, it just doesn't work because I have coarse thick hair.. I'Ve tested many hair products over the years and eventually I found this one which really worked for me, which is the got 2 b from Schwarzkopf.. Now I've been using that for the last 3 years and haven't tested anything else really. So if you know of a very strong glue, let me know in the comments. 2., You also need a comb.. Most people buy rather inexpensive combs for a dollar or less that are made out of injection molded plastic and the problem is they have little ridges and actually can hurt your hair.. It'S also much more difficult to get the comb through your hair.. That'S why I'm using a quality hard rubber comb, which is also acetate. It glides through your hair, like butter, and it doesn't damage your hair, so invest a few more bucks in a quality. Comb. 3.. You need a hair dryer. In this case, I'm just using a regular store-brand. Nothing fancy just has to get hot. If you want to dry your hair quickly and you need a certain amount of power, not too much so it actually dries.. I always start with freshly washed hair, because just making it wet is not enough, at least in my case., It's too thick and it's much more difficult to style it right.. At the same time, you don't want your hair to be too wet, otherwise it takes too long and you may get waves in your hair.. Once I wash my hair, I make sure to dry it thoroughly.. You can also use a second towel if it's not dry. Enough. Now it's time for some gel., Like I said you want stuff that is white. I'll. Take about this much for the amount of hair. I have. Don't skimp on it. If you don't use enough, you'll lack the hold, especially if you have thick coarse hair.. I rub it in both hands and apply it to my hair.. Usually I start with one first just get it in there all the way down, not just on top.. You definitely want to get all of your long hair. You really need to absorb it. Alright. Now it's time to wash your hands, otherwise everything will be sticky and it'll be a mess.. Now it's time to choose your part. Personally, I like it either here or here.. Usually I don't go all the way to the sides.. It'S always something you may want to do. If you have a receding hairline., I avoid center parts because it makes you look like from the Adams family. An easy way to get. Your part right is to comb it back on the side. You want the part to be and simply go in straight and go up.. Now you simply comb it to one side and then the other. So you get a nice part. At this stage. Your part is not perfect and you simply do it from the other way.. Sometimes it's great the first time, but usually when you start out it's not. Now I go slightly to the side, not in the exact line. Otherwise it will never be straight, but just a tiny amount to the left or right and it'll be a much smoother straighter. Line. Once at the end I hold my hair like this, so I know what side it's on then I comb the other part over. So I get exactly what I want. Once I'm done with the part you have this result. Next up. I comb my hair down and to the side and the back exactly where I want it to be. At this stage, it's time for the hair dryer. Normally I choose the warm setting, which is not too hot, but also not cool, because that way it dries faster and I use the medium setting, because otherwise it will just blow my hair all over the place and it's harder to style it.. First, I start with the shorter side because it's easier., Basically I dry my hair and follow with a comb. So I get nice straight hair lines and I get it to settle in the place I wanted to.. Now the short side is much easier than the wider side, because you have a lot more hair.. There are 2 ways to do this. You can comb and use your fan into one strand all the way at a time or you go along the part first and slightly move over until they're all done.. You can choose whatever works for you.. For me, with my thick and coarse hair, it's better to do it slowly from the part away.. At this stage I also use the hot setting simply to get it to dry faster.. Once you have your hair in a shape, you roughly want it to be. It'S time to use your hands and leave the comb behind.. I do this because otherwise I'll get hair sticking out, especially in the back, and I want to avoid that. With my hands. I can hold my hair down while using a hair, dryer and smooth it all. Out., If you get hair standing up, simply use some water make it wet put it back on maybe use a little gel and use your hair dryer again., Once you're happy with the look and your hair is flat, you're, basically done. Voila The disconnected undercut Gentleman's Gazette Style., They also have a black version of it. That is clear, and it doesn't work at all so stay clear of that. Only use that one., A regular gel, doesn't work because it flakes, and I really need something. That'S super strong.. Before you decide to go with this haircut, you should think about what exactly do you want? How long you want it on top? Do you really want to shorten the side? Do you want a slight fade or not, And how are you going to wear it? What are you going to wear it with Now that you know what my unstyled hair and my hairstyle look like, and how I do it stay tuned for the next video and sign up for our newsletter, so you get the next video right to your inbox.. Thank you.

Pixelface Killah: I also have sensitive skin. I've been using Suavecito Pomade. It is water soluble and not overly greasy. The "firme hold" version is also great for thick hair. No acne, no complaints, so far. Highly recommended. (Also the Felix the Cat versions are extra cool points).

Miroslav Jankovic: I just tried it out this product and it's amazing! My hair is also thick and coarse but now I know how to deal with it. Thanks a lot.

Stephen Holtom: For the effect you are going for, I think relaxing your hair would be the right option. I have similar hair to yours, and when I relax it I immediately get the superstraight flat look without needing to do anything else. However in my case I prefer higher on top.

The Mechanical Necromancer: As someone else with thick, coarse hair, I've been going back and forth between Cremo, American Crew, and Suavecito, depending what's available (I travel a lot). I've found that any of those three, when paired with a little bit of Brylcreem after you've worked in the pomade works wonders. Then again, I have my long portion cut right around the 2.75in (maybe even a little under) mark so there's significantly less to work with.

Matthew Tatola: Great tutorial! Love your content, been looking for advice for my thick, wavy hair.

Daniel Wood: Respect for showing your unstyled hair. I'd be uncomfortable doing the same.

Frank Horrigan: The undercut is the best looking hairstyle for me and I've been rocking it for a good few years now. I cut it myself and some people tell me it makes me look like a 1940s GI, especially paired with the clothes I wear. Definitely gonna keep it

Adam Purcell: for those wanting to side part be aware you may not be able to part on one side but can the other. Some can go both ways, others either left or right. My natural part is right to left for example. If i try left to right the hair will not part and sticks up

Evan Bailey: Personally Watrivol pomade works great for me, I have nearly the exact haircut you have but I have much thinner hair. Also Watrivol comes out pretty easy with water so if you take a quick shower at night ( or just rinse your hair ) then you also don’t have greasy pillows. Then again because it doesn’t work with water I usually carry the container ( as it doesn’t take up much room ) with me in my briefcase just in case.

Mr Nobody: Ha! It's only a few weeks ago when I gave myself a peaky blinders style undercut, before that I've had a typical side parting for years. Gotta say the main benefit of this undercut is just how easy you can do it yourself at home, a hairclipper and a pair of scissors is all you need. Shave the sides and back, then trim the top to the length desired.

gabrian taylor: Thank you for the informative video. I'm glad I finally found someone who uses as much product as I do. I have an undercut style and I found that Kevin Murphy products work really well. Gritty Business and Knightrider are two that I like, plus I find that I don't need nearly as much product to achieve the desired look. Cheers.

Sondre Rudlang: two questions: first, do you make sure that you put the product, in your case get2be, through the hair so it also go to the roots of your hair? i have heard many stylists and other style youtubers often repeat this and I usualy do this myself aswell, because i feel it makes my hair stay like i want it to for a longer amount of time. just wondering since i didnt see you do it in the video and you didnt mention it. Question number 2, you seem to dont want any volume in your hair, is that because of the troubel of styling it when you have thick hair, or do you simply prefer less volumemized hair? other than those little nitpicks, great informative video! really liked that you mentioned the many different types of style you can go for with an undercut. thumbs up!

Paul HANS: Well done!!! I had no idea your hair would look that way naturally.

Howard Goldstein: Raphael, being a retired hairdresser, & second generation hairdresser at that, combing the hair forward, not backward, when making a part is the way to go...you can use the wider teeth to get better separation of the hair & see exactly you want to position the part so much more easily before combing the hair away from the part on each side...also, a bit of a wave on the longer side is much more flattering than totally flat to the head.....

James Ken: I have the exact same hair as you and I agree freshly washed hair results on a much much better finished look. I use Johnny b mode and it works great!

GuysLifeHacks: Love this channel. I've always had really fine hair and I'm wondering what you would recommend as far as styles/products for someone with fine hair. Whatever I try to use usually gets messed up in the wind

Andrei xrt: I would recommend adding some volume to your hair, even if it's slicked back it will make you look a lot younger that way.

Dean Aden Moodley: I would highly suggest Reuzel Water based pomade. It comes in a red tin(medium hold). Smells great and works well for slickbacks. Hope that helps!!

Aestheticspace8: I don’t know why everyone is dissing the hairstyle, I personally believe it looks very classy and just fantastic overall

randy fernando: You're videos are all informative! And this hair tutorial, Man! It's helpful and fun. Kudos to you !

Scott Mc: Sven, I enjoy your videos and value your advice. I'm a portly man and would appreciate a video counseling me on the most-flattering way to dress. Which is the optimal style for a business suit? Do I wear a belt below the belly (as gravity suggests) or another way. I would appreciate guidance on how to dress professionally, without looking foolish. Many thanks.

Roger Gelwicks: I've used got2b for years now. Same as Rafael, my hair is too thick for many other products to work well. Besides, got2b is pretty affordable compared to "higher end" stuff I've tried, and it's got better hold than those brands that boast "extreme hold."

tnetroP: I started this video being jealous of people with hair. But I ended it realising I really don't miss all the time and effort styling hair. I'm quite happy shaving it off every few days.

Bigwave2003: For thin to medium hair I like Jason Hi-Shine Styling Gel. Despite the name, there's not a lot of shine. It looks and feels like you're not wearing gel -- the hair just stays in place.

crawf668: Thank you for posting this!! I did finally after some long searching found someone who understood this style....

yosteve: This is nice. have you tried a flat iron before? it'll make all the texture straight so you don't have to use your scalp as the "straightener". then when you add product you can style the hair off the scalp, more like the pictures in the video

Jon Komatsu: Whoa, you have a nice, thick head of hair! Classic look, and a.lot more versatile than I imagined. Thanks!

Andrew Clark: I liked this classic hairstyle video. you did a great job!

Vishal Srivastav: Greetings from India, Mr. Schneider! All your videos are simply amazing and you so easily make man out of human. Great job, Sir. Keep it up! Best Wishes.

Mathieu Dostie: The British brand Brylcreem is very great too. It’s made of beeswax, and the company was found in the 20’s.

joiski: I have exactly the same hairtype as you and it's a pain to wake up to a tangled mess morning after having showered. But one good thing about my hair is that I can style it however I'd like and it will remain like that (if it dried in that position), without using any products. I don't really like the "wet hair"-look so I consider myself very lucky (when I have a good cut). Cheers, and thanks for showing~~

Josh Mills: Styling your hair like this defeats the purpose of a disconnected undercut and honestly makes the back look terrible.

Evan Koller: I'm a fan so this is coming from a positive place: you looked much better before you made the part. The extra volume from your hair slicked back looked much better for your face. I really appreciate your videos but your hair always through me off because it comes off a little nerdy. Maybe you should try something slicked back with no part and more volume.

kuko6: when you did just that smaller side.. it looks better than the final hairstyle

John Jennings: The black hair glue is slightly water resistant, great for styling when I'm going to be sweating a lot (I dance in Texas)

Yuze Chen: Hi Sven, is the back side of your hair shaved to the same length as other sides? And where to put the distinct line between the short and long hair at the back side? Thanks

Em W: I think you should use an eyebrow brush with pigment. It looks very natural!

MexicanMaiden62: Hey Suavecito is an amazing product its a huge seller at my salon. There is no right or wrong way to style someone's hair it all depends on the person and their type of hair. And face shape

Edo: Hi Raphael, good video! In my opinion, you have a round face shape, have you ever tried a more angular hairstyle? I think that it will work very well on you face shape

qarhsi: in my opinion, the hairstyle that you go for does not require you to have an undercut hairstyle... with the haircut that you have, you have so many more options than just a classic side-part with no volume, interesting things etc.

Schnerm001: Thank you so much, Sven! Worked for me perfectly. Greetings from your homeland Germany Servus!

AJIT JOSHI: Sir I'm from India I'm great fan of ur style tips for suits and hair products. Lots of respect and love sir.

AJIT JOSHI: I love your advice sir great style advice s

Jasko: You should rock a quiff, side parted pompadour perhaps, something that will stand taller on your head and create illusion it's longer. I can see you rocking it.

Mr. Climate Change: Why on Earth do you get a disconnected undercut just to style it this way?!?! It's pointless and this style would look a million times better if it was just a regular tapered haircut.

Max Taylor: I have very thick hair too and I use Brylcreem very successfully

mimir's Well: Sven, try a nice water based pomade like o’douds, or even like a Baxter of California clay, it would look much better.

Jonathan Smith: Never use a hair dryer, unless you absolutely have to. Terrible for your hair. Get a precision haircut, and shampoo, in most cases every third day. But, use conditioner every day. Towel dry your hair, and style it when damp. It won't take long for it to dry in that style naturally. Avoid gels or pomades. Rather, use a leave-in, quality spray conditioner(Pro Touch), and it will complete your hair style, give it shine, with even a slight wet look. Perfect.

Anson Clark: You could get the same results with a regular tapered haircut, probably better. I am a barber and I don't understand why you get your hair cut this way and then slick it down to make it look like a regular tapered haircut? What's the point?

The tokens are good: Dont listen to the comments, your hair looks really good.

Fred Fokkelman: Thanks for the tip(s)!

Kevin Wong: I easily get acne and I use pomade. I use a water based pomade from Imperial Barber. It smells good and its not greasy at all.

The typical dude: why not just slick it back? I think it would better

James Sutton: I also use the got2b glue, it has a hold that lasts all day

xjr1618x: I'm watching this and my hair disconnected from the top of my head a long time ago. So for me the disconnected undercut is like shaving my head, haha, sad

bxicj: Don’t use gel. It doesn’t look good whatsoever. Use a clay or pomade. Personnally your hairstyle is better when you don’t do anything to it. Your hair doesn’t look all that good when it is flat.

ihopetowin: Decades ago, this was called a "fighter's cut." You can see pictures of Jack Dempsey sporting this style with a three day growth; very intimidating. Pictures of the models in this video are those of metrosexuals that kind of wish they were the tough fighter type. Truly, they look quite ridiculous.

Andy Garcia: I have the same hair type and get by with Johnny B Mode gel. I use to use got 2b glued, but didn't like how it felt on my hair. I use a 16T Kent comb.

Marcus Johnson: If you want to look like a gentleman, part your hair on the left. Parting it on the right makes one look effeminate and caddish.

Noah Wou: I don't know which pomade you used to use, but home brewers are doing amazing things these days. I used to use Got2be Glued products, but they harden your hair, flake, and have an artificial smell. I switched to Crystal Lake pomade, by Shear Revival. It's the best water based pomade in the industry, provides a medium to heavy hold, and isn't greasy by any means. It's made of all natural products which are healthy for your hair. Shear Revival also offer a traditional oil based pomade called Music or Misery, which uses hydrogenated castor oil, and eliminates that greasy element you described. The company is tiny and is located in New Jersey, but their products are some of the best in the world (past Pete and Pedro, and I'm a loyal Alpha M viewer). This is surprisingly not an ad, but just a tip coming from a very satisfied Shear Revival customer. Hope this helps!

Tim Buckley: You should cut it tighter on the back and sides it’ll still look gentlemanly but you’ll look younger and cleaner

Jonathan Begaye: I style my hair as a comb over as well, and the best hair gel I use is Style Sexy Hair hard up Holding Gel

Bob Taylon: My hair is not quite like yours, but is thick and strong. I usually use American Crew pomade, tried your product and it is faster, holds better, and is not greasy. Great recommendation

Unions Protect Us From Greed: I have trouble being able to style my hair this way as it is *very* curly. May anyone assist me please?

bonna shikder: I like his unstyled cut more

varun koganti: Well won't your hair get damaged of you use so many products and hit it with hot air ?

Martin Moore: Thanks for the hair workshop. Much appreciated. Happy New Year to you and yours. M

Aitor Navarro: Your hair is exactly like mine and I style it similar only perhaps with a bit more length. Great video. Where in Germany are you from?

Possessed by the drop: If it had more volume i think it would look better

Kevin Martos P: hahaha hätte niemals gedacht dass das ein undercut ist. Hab selbst auch einen, trage meinen allerdings gänzlich ohne produkte. Zu deinem Style passt das viele Gel ja sehr gut.

Ed: If you're looking for something with an extreme hold try Gorilla Snot hair gel or as it's name says in spanish "Moco de Gorila" That stuff will turn your hair into plastic lol

shaker LT1350: Utilize your Volume! You can still be a "Dapper Dan" tho! But for me, being a shorter size gentleman, I tend to use my hairstyle as a optical height extention.....lol. Nevertheless good video as always!

brama: Have you thought of chemically relaxing your hair?

People Love... #Shorts: I'm bold but I still finished watching this vid. Thanks GG.

Alan Waldron: A tapered hair cut would be better for that style, but in general I don’t think it’s a great style to go for. Too shinny and stuff looking, like a bowling ball. It’s good to look like your hair has some life

jacob singer: This was informative

cbernier3: That glue is way too strong. I could put it in on Friday night, and still have a hard time shampooing it all out on Sunday afternoon, nevermind if I were to try to wash it out every day like he must be doing.

Andy Rattan: Your hair is nice.. But i think you should've given it some volume to pop it.. Its kinda too flat... I have thin hair and i have the undercut... However is there any product youu can recommend so tht my hair can grow thick nd silky...

Der Alte: "3 on the sides, mr. Afonso, and let the top to the final so i can see and judge the size." is all i need in my montlhy visit to barber

M0kkn0: "I use my comb because otherwise I'll get a hair sticking out in the back," he said, using his comb as a hair stuck out on the back of his head.

Adam Rolný: Try this: Layrite Super Hold, Layrite Cement. These are watter-soluble pomades, holds like hell, you can re-comb your hair whenever you choose to do so. I never had a problems like acne, greasy pillows...etc with this product. Very easy to wash it out of your hair. Only "problem" is that vanilla smell - it is really nice, but it starts to be annoying over the time :)

Max Taylor: How did you style the slicked back undercut from the blazer video?

David K: I agree that he looks best before slicking his hair down. A little volume in his hair makes him look younger however who are we to tell someone how to style their own hair! The other comments on here re what styling products to use and how got2be is rubbish...….I have the same thick coarse hair as Sven and I can tell you 99% of products do nothing on our hair type so when you find one that works it is a miracle.

Nithin Paul: I think you would look even more *D A P P E R* if you styled it in a different way!

LilyoftheValeyrising: I cut my husband’s hair, and mine, and this guide is very helpful. For his hair of course! My favorite quality comb is Ace brand.

CHRISTIANNWO: I don't dig the style (or rather the lack of style). It simply doesn't look right, from the front. It needs volume. The way it is now, it looks like you were running late, and you had to improvise.

Naila Khan: Don't use gels, use first class oil.

Benjamin Staern: Actually I like your unstyled hair too, reminds me of the bass player in Tears for Fears. ;)

MrC0MPUT3R: Ugh I wish I had different genetics. My hair is thinning at an alarming rate :(

Bunjier: How to get disconnected undercut Step 1: Don't

LucianLacroix: Hair cuts should only be two things: high and tight.

Bella The crazy girl🥴: if you look close the background is moving lol

john murdoch: I have hair like you. My issue is i wear hats..so i use murrays and reusel but would switch to the cheaper got2b you mentioned..but how does that hold up under a hat?

Mircea Tabalae: I think I know just the right product for you and your hair, it's called Elmer's Glue and should do really well for you.

Miguel Páscoa: so elegant and well dressed, but the hair...hmmm

Karan Vito: I wish i had hair like that.. mine are on the verge of extinction.

Chilly Milly: Ohne Produkt im Haar und Anzug siehst Du so extrem viel jünger aus

sam it: I THOUGHT DISCONNECTED UNDER CUTS LOOKED DIFFERENT

why RU knechtel: I would have neveeeeeer thought that Raphael has such an haircut haha

Asd Fgh: You should try water based pomades
