How to cut your own layers at home, and this is going to be focused on women's hair. I will do one specifically for men's haircuts, but if you are one of those people who has to cut your own hair at home, then this is going to be a very in-depth, step-by-step tutorial for you. I, as a hair, stylist, always suggest going to another licensed professional, but i get so many emails and messages from women all across the world. Asking me if i can do a video to teach them how to cut their own hair or layers at home. Here'S the biggest challenge right - and this is going to be a whole thorough me talking non-stop video, so make sure you're comfortable you're ready to actually do a haircut or you know you want to just watch this over once and then and then watch it. But this is very, very important. It'S very hard for me to teach what's taken me 25 years to learn not even perfect, but i'd say, learn well enough to do these types of really nice haircuts 25 years and for me to be able to teach someone. I mean yes, i'm, i feel very confident in my teaching abilities. I have a passion for teaching and i probably can teach you how to cut your hair. That'S the whole point of this video, but just keep in mind that if you're not a licensed professional - and you don't understand certain types of you know, verbiage or terminology, then you may have some challenges. But i'm going to make this as simple as i possibly can for you. You know i'm not giving all sorts of trade secrets away, but this is really designed for people that you know if you have to cut your hair yourself if you've had challenges in the past with other people that can't cut your hair straight or whatever, then this Is going to help you all right? So, first things: first, what are you going to need? Firstly, you're going to need hair right if you have a full head of hair that comes in handy. Unlike me, anyway, get used to the bad jokes people get used to the bad jokes you're going to need a few things. One is a hair cutting comb like so i do sell these on my website shop.thesalonga.com, i have them in white and red and they sell like actually people buy them. This is what i use when i cut hair. So i'm not selling you something that i don't use. I actually use this and you're gon na need a variety of clips or you know. Whatever types of clips, you have all right, um, whether they're butterfly clips alligator clips uh in the description in this video, is a link to my amazon shop page, where i have the tools that i use as a stylist, which you can you know buy. But you need something to section the hair uh, so you can have a good road map when you're cutting you're going to also need a pair of shears. Now, here's here's the thing is, you know i have professional shears right as a as a hair stylist, which tend to be very sharp. Can you execute this with a pair of crappy? You know scissors that a four-year-old is going to use in pre-k, probably not so. I'M going to suggest that you just invest in some sort of sheer now. Does it have to be? You know a 500 pair of scissors? No, can you go on amazon and look for hair cutting shears? I guess you can, but just make sure you have something that is very similar to a professional shear, but also be very careful because they're sharp and you can maybe even will cut yourself, and you have to be careful all right. You'Re going to need the blow drying cream from my line, which i suggest and also 25 spray. What i'm going to do is i'm going to wet this mannequin down, and i suggest doing this on wet hair just because it's going to make life a whole lot easier and then i'll show you how to go about using the 25 spray chances. Are your hair? May get a little bit naughty 25 spray. The reason it's called 25 is because it has 25 benefits. This is my second best selling product. I use this when i cut someone's hair and the reason you should use it is mostly it helps with detangling. So if you've got really really naughty hair, really long hair - and you have a hard time combing through it, this instantly, as you could see, helps remove the knots and the next reason why you want to use this is because it keeps the hair moisturized and a Bit more damp while you're cutting, so it's not going to dry as quickly right. It'S going to help keep the hair moist, which is what you want. When you're cutting this. You want to make sure that you know you're starting off with the hair wet and then it's okay, if it dries over time when you're just about finished, that's how i cut hair anyway cut wet into dry now. The next thing you want to do is make sure that you part your hair wherever it is that it naturally parts so for this demonstration, i'm going to part the hair as close to the middle as possible. It doesn't have to be exact because you'll see when i'm sectioning the hair and showing you how to cut it, you're going to realize that as long as it's right in this panel in this area, that's important. The next thing is, you have to break the hair down and separate it into sections. So what i recommend doing is, i always say, find the high point of the head or the top of the head, where it's the flattest and if you put the comb you'll, see right, there is where it's the flattest and you want to create. This is why this little spacing is here, because it allows you to actually see where you're using the comb to create your sectioning. What is this doing? This is separating and it's keep it very simple. It'S separating the front here from the back. You want to make sure you're doing that, because, with hair cutting, and especially doing this yourself, it's going to make life a whole lot easier right as you're cutting this, then what i suggest doing - and this is why i said it's important - to have a number of Clips handy is section this off, just get it out of the way, and also what that's going to do is that's going to help you to see that okay, this is the front, and then this is the back all right. This is probably one of the most important things when it comes to any sort of haircut, so with hair cutting right. What i usually do is i start off for on the length right. The length is how long the actual hair is going to be throughout the bottom. Here, it's if you're doing this yourself, the only way you can really cut length. Is it it's tough. This is why i don't really recommend people cutting their hair themselves, but you split the hair right down the middle in the back like so, and what you need to do is you need to take, and this is what i suggest doing if you're doing at home Is take all of your hair right in possibly one or two sections, if your hair's a bit on the finer side, you can take it in one section if it's thick, maybe take two sections where you slide the comb this way and here's your first section. So you wanna try to capture all of this in one shot. What you need to do is thoroughly thoroughly comb the hair and again it may be hard to see this, but what you're looking to do is trim up the ends here so you're going to bring this forward and you're going to cut the hair to the length. That'S desired and it's going to look like this. Okay. Now the only thing about this when you bring something forward, remember this has to travel back, so there is a chance that it's going to be shorter into longer, so you may have some sort of v right. It'S not going to be anything crazy, but you know you will have a slight v in the back, which is okay, because this whole haircut again goes shorter to longer all right, so comb, this all forward. You want to you, want to lock in your fingers. You can even grab the whole section like this and then use your fingers like this right to guide it down and you're gon na hold it and you're going to cut okay you're going to cut now you're, not using any guide. So you have to make sure that you're going to be even - and i can't believe, even steven - i i nailed it - i'm even steven right now. It'S even on both sides, which is great. So what you need to do is make sure that you have this. Even on both sides, and then you can comb the hair straight down and if you want you can bring everything over all the way over to this one side and look you're gon na see that longer piece right in the middle and then you can also comb Everything over take all this hair. This is all in one section, comb all this over again here this way, look for the that longer piece and there it is, and this should help eliminate the really big difference of it going into a super super long v. But again you still may have one right here, because you're traveling, the hair, is traveling from this point out this way, all right now. Obviously, if you can get someone to help you and cut the back of your hair, that would be great, but what you're really trying to do is you know we're going to focus on the layering, but this all plays an important part. So now we're ready to work into the side panel here and then working up into the front. What i suggest doing is now you can comb all this down. You can take that clip out. You really need to think about where you want the shortest piece to be in the front. So if it's, you know a face frame, you got to realize. If you want your hair to be right here, your first angle, you got to make sure you can. You can cut this to blend it all the way in which may be easy or may not be easy for you. It all depends on the type of look that you want for this demonstration. What i'm going to do is i'm going to show you how to cut it somewhere around this area, right kind of a medium type face frame. So what you can do again is since we're on the sides here and we're still working on the length you're going to bring this forward and now you're going to start to angle, your scissors now with scissors. It'S all about hand, positioning flipping the comb, the scissors around cutting this way, cutting this way. You know doing it yourself, maybe a little bit difficult right, but that's where you got to look in the mirror that it can the mirror can help. You also making sure your fingers are really locked in so once your fingers are locked in you see the section. The longer hair you're then going to cut it. To that previous section, you cut, you don't want to cut into that, because that's what you just cut so now we're working our way up here we are in the very very front, i'm going to rotate my fingers up this way. I can see the longer hair here, here's the piece from where i previously cut and you're going to cut right down to that piece all right. If we have to go shorter into here, there's the longer hair and you're cutting downwards. What you can then do is bring all this hair forward like this and by looking in the mirror, you can see and judge if it's, even if it's accurate right all the hair comes forward like that. This should be the shortest point in through here, and it's working down into the longer points which are down here. You can then incorporate all of this into that section by bringing all this hair forward. I'M just going to turn the mannequin this way by bringing all this forward like this and again, making sure that this is always the shortest piece and it works down into the longest piece right. The easiest thing to do which i've seen people do themselves is to just bring the hair forward. You can again continue to work away at it until you get your desired length, same exact thing on the other side, and just remember you know this is this is why i don't suggest trying to do this at home, but just remember this is only the base. This is only like the foundation of the haircut. You know when we do the internal layering, i mean that's a whole other a whole other thing, which you know i'll show you, but it's not the easiest to achieve. You know, you know what i mean it's. It'S might look easy or sound easy, but it may not be the easiest all right. So now, we've done the face framing on this side and what you're trying to do is you can bring the entire head forward your hair forward like this. So, let's see what that looks like here right, you bring the entire head forward. Here'S what we cut before here's a little bit of what we cut, and now we have to work that in to the other side, so there's the shortest piece. What can you do? Is you cut the angle right to that shortest piece right there? So now, what you're doing is you're matching the hair up and you're matching the face frame up and then, what's going to happen, is you're going to see the hair that's longer. That needs to come off and you'll be able to blend it all in so you want to go shorter out to longer that way. Now it's time to work on the internal shape right when i say internal shape, i mean the layers throughout the top and the sides and the back now. What i do to create very, very consistent layering is: i will go back and separate the hair again to separate the front from the back and then what i'm going to do is i'm going to take a section of hair literally right on the top back of The head like this and what you want to do is you want to comb the entire section straight up like this. So what it's going to look like in the front of your head, it's going to you're, going to look like this you're going to be holding your hair straight up. This is where you're going to be cutting the length for the layers. Now you don't want to go too short here and have it really long here you want to make sure that you go back and check to see where the length is on the layers, and you can say: okay, here's the here's the front length right here and Here'S all the hair that is in the back. I have to somehow go and connect it from this into this. So what i, what i suggest doing is kind of analyzing where that length is and go up. Maybe you know inch and a half to two inches and you're, going to cut straight across so you're cutting a straight across section that literally covers the middle and the corners of the hair. So this is perfectly straight. This is your first layer of where you're going to be cutting everything to now. It'S almost like smooth sailing you're going to take two sections three, depending on how thick your hair is you're, going to take a section right under that piece on the right or left side you're going to comb it straight up and you're going to look to see What we call as a guideline and you're going to cut that those longer hairs off, because that is the hair. It needs to come off. So now what you see what i've done is i've evened everything out. Let'S try one more section and the reason i don't suggest going all the way down to the bottom is because sometimes that has a tendency to thin the hair on the bottom too much, depending on how long you or how short you cut it. But for this purpose it's your best bet simply because you only have that one option to comb everything straight up. So in the very very bottom, if you can or if you want, you can go from the very very back of your head right, the neck. All the way down to the neck - and you can comb this again straight up all the way straight up. If you have a lot of hair, this may be a bit of a challenge, but comb. This all the way straight up, and you may not see much of anything, but you can cut it straight like that. To show you what this looks like on this side, this is this is basically what it looks like is. This entire section is combed upwards from the very very bottom, the very, very neck line, and that's how you're going to get an even shape. So then, what you're going to do is the exact same thing on the other side, and, what's going to be very helpful, is that you already have a guide from the previous sections that you cut so there we go comb it straight up. There'S the guide and straight across, you always want to try to hold on to this section, and i know it's going to be tough, but you want to hold on to that section somehow. So you know exactly where you are and where you're cutting comb the hair straight up and you're going to cut straight across. Like this, i don't suggest the point cutting thing at all: don't do it! It'S just gon na leave out some ends that need to be trimmed, and you know, unless you want a very jagged type of looking haircut, i don't suggest doing the point cutting because a lot of times you're not cutting the entire section of hair. So here we are once again in the very very back we're going to comb this upwards to where and it's going to feel like a lot of hair same thing, comb, it all the way up, look for any longer pieces. There may be one or two and then you can trim it off see even i'm having a hard time with all that hair. So, but that's honestly doing it yourself, that's going to be the the most challenging part of this whole thing. So now it's time to work towards the front and the front is very, very important, because you have to make sure that you're blending everything in and that the layers are connected. So the best way that i suggest doing this is to take the section right in front of where you just cut you're, going to bring us straight up and you're going to be working right in through what i call like a mohawk section just down the middle. First, so comb the hair all the way straight up. There is the guide that we just cut from the previous section, and that is going to be our reference point. So next take another section right down the middle and just in the middle. Let the sides kind of fall out of that section straight up, there's the longer hair and you're cutting straight across again straight across the very very front. Now you can bring the entire front section, the entire front kind of mohawk section straight up and then you're able to connect the dots here and there is what needs to be cut. You see how this looks. Everything is brought to this one point and we have a perfectly even balanced, layered haircut, we're not finished. However, we have to worry about the sides and the corners now, so the corners are where the hair, the head shape, rounds out. So what we're going to do? And what you're going to do is you're going to probably comb on top of the hair like so, and you can see all that longer, hair right there and what you're going to do is you're, going to cut that off hold on to that section. You'Re going to go all the way down to the bottom here, you're going to comb it straight out from your head and you're going to look to see where the longer pieces are. There may not be many, but that's it you're not looking to cut the very very bottom, because that is your length and if you do this wrong, you're going to end up cutting your length here. But there we go hold it straight out from the head. As you can, this is really what you should follow to make sure it looks like this here we go on the sides very, very important watch what we do comb this straight out from your head, keep in mind. This is the length right here. So what you're? Looking to do is just cut on top of that, so you preserve the length here. We go on this side right in through the very, very front, same thing and we're just going to lightly trim that up now you have to duplicate this on the other side, which may not be the easiest, but if you can do it then go for it Hold on to that piece we're going to bring us all the way down again, it's got to look like very similar to what i'm doing comb the straight out, any of those longer hairs on top or what need to be cut same thing. Go back now we're in the corner again, there's the longer hair and you want to make sure you're going from all those longer hairs to it. Looking very very even it's, it has to connect if you are cutting your own hair and it doesn't connect or things look very very off. You don't want to take too much because then you're really going to be in trouble. If you take too much hair off, especially when it comes to layering, it's just going to be very, very choppy, and it's going to be a disaster right. It'S going to be a disaster, so there's the corner right there. You can see there's a lot of hair that needed to come off right there, i'm going to hold on to that piece, and i'm going to bring this straight out this way and just extend your fingers all the way to the very very end. This way you have a good connection there and then you're done on on with that. What i suggest doing, if you possibly can, is take a section again, but this time it's going to be an actual mohawk, looking type section right down the middle. So it's going to look like this and you want to bring this all forward like that and look for any longer hairs. What that's going to do is it's really going to make sure that both sides are balanced, because if you pull all this hair up and things are way off, this is the best way to find out, because this is what we call cross, checking or literally we're Just going back in to check the haircut so there we go, as you can see into here, right you're, bringing everything forward. This way you can even go into the sides and just check to make sure that everything is blended together and in sync. So all of your sections and all the pieces of hair that you are cutting and trying to blend in all are going to look the same. If you see maybe right there any longer pieces just make sure that if you're going to cut the hair you're cutting it with a purpose to blend it in don't just cut hair to cut hair, because you really can have a disaster now when it comes to Blow drying it you can see, the hair is still fairly damp, it's not like dripping wet or it's not bone dry, but it's just enough to be able to work with. I, like my crafted blow dry cream. It smells phenomenal. It smells like black orchid from tom ford, which is a great fragrance. It was inspired by that the fragrance that we did - and this is just going to give your hair a little bit of hold and a little bit of control when you blow dry your hair. What you want to make sure you're doing is blow drying it kind of forward in the way that you cut it. You know, however, you blow dry your hair. I think, if you're watching this, you really understand how to blow dry hair. I have videos on blow drying, but what i want to do is i want to just blow dry part of this, so you can see what it looks like. So this was a fairly quick blow-dry job here. What i did and, as you can see, even though the hairs on the face, this is kind of what you want, so you can see all the angles and the layers coming forward right blow dry, the hair forward. This way now you can just bring the hair back with your hands like so right rake it back into kind of that center parting close to where we cut it and, ladies and gentlemen, look at that nice beautiful shape. We have right, if you can do this yourself, but the important part is to realize what you just created. Is you created a beautiful? You know balance shape with some volume, some texture. You know we kept the length a little bit and i think the layers look phenomenal. You know um, it's really the type of thing where the haircut does all the work. Obviously, the blow-dry is going to help, but when cutting hair like this, you know it's really essential that you take your time and you understand that not everything is going to be perfect. You know, especially if you're cutting it yourself and you're, not professional. Ladies, let me know in the comments below if this video was helpful, if you enjoyed my bad jokes and you want me to keep telling jokes: okay stay safe and healthy. Thank you so much for watching, don't forget to like comment and subscribe and i'll see you next time for more videos with a slander.

nicole dll: i like that hes being super helpful but is also super upset we’re gonna try to do it at home lol

coasterkat: I have only had 2 professional stylists who could actually cut layers properly. Having a license doesn’t necessarily mean they can cut hair so thank you for sharing this information. I get so tired of spending a LOT of money on crappy haircuts & ending up having to fix it at home.

Dusty Colquitt: Thank you for this. My teen daughter has extreme social anxiety and can’t go to the salon. I appreciate your tutorials. They are easy to follow and I feel confident I can give her a haircut like this!!

Brenda Garcia: My hair was trashed after trimming it myself for so long. Started watching videos on YouTube and ran across this. I watch this 45 minutes before I had to leave for work. You explained everything and it was so easy. I have very fine hair and then. I did a fast five minute job on it and it turned out great! I am going to watch the video again and do a little bit more thorough job. Wish I could find a hairstylist half as good as you!

Lindsey Warren: I work very long hours with almost no time off. My late husband used to cut my hair for me and I miss it so much. I've struggled with it recently. This tutorial is fabulous and I thank you for taking the time to show us (however reluctantly, lol) how to cut our own hair at home. You're awesome! Bless

Fradhz: I can’t believe it I just cut layers into my own, elbow short hair following your video and it looks awesome! I was a little intimidated by all the steps, most of them made no sense to me at first but you’ve explained them in a way that I understood perfectly and it made my technique much better as a result! I’m so happy to have followed this video, you gave me confidence throughout the whole thing. Thank you so, so much !

Mary Esther Gilbert: Great demonstration, thank you! I've been cutting my own hair for many, many years exactly the way you just demonstrated. It took many tries to get the layered look just right for my curly hair. I found that many professionals don't understand how curly hair doesn't look the same as long hair for the same haircut.

Joyce Swart: Thank you so much for teaching so that amateurs can understand and confidently follow. I have always cut my own hair from teenage and have learned by trial and error. After your tutorials I know there'll be less "error". Love your talking one through all the way, and love your sincere presentation with bits of humour coming through. Please continue!

NoPainLorraine1: Been trimming and styling my own hair for 2 years now. It can be done. My hair is very long, and what @TheSalonGuy is instructing is Spot On !

C D: Thanks for your videos Stephen. I attended cosmetology college many years ago but dropped out to pursue my real calling. I began cutting my hair 20 yrs ago when I got tired of paying for a cut and then having to 'fix' it when I got home. Your videos pick up where my early training left off! When co-workers find out I cut my own hair they are surprised.

Brittany Keith: Using this tutorial for the second time and honestly the best tutorial I've watched. I've honestly watched hours and hours and none have made it so simple! Loved the result far more than any paid cut I've ever had, kinda ticked I wasn't given this all the times I asked for it and didn't receive it lol. THANK YOU SO MUCH! Love your down-to-earth approach that doesn't make us feel like cutting our hair at home is utterly ridiculous and that we will never manage a satisfactory result! I added your sweep bang tutorial to this one and just simply love it...I won't be changing anything for quite some time!

Jana Mae Carreri: I worked as an esthetician in a spa for 8 years. I use to cut my own layers for years. I would have the cosmetologists check it after I would cut it and they were blown away at how good I was at doing myself. I have all one length blunt cut now and haven’t had layers in years. This is a great video.

Monica 0003: The mannequin's face is my mood when I cut my own hair without having any idea of what I am doing

Drishti: Love this tutorial. I have very dense, coarse, long and wavy hair. I just did this at home to take some weight off of my hair and it looks great. I went for shorter layer and my curls look healthier now. Thanks a ton!

Today I Paint: What can I say, this helps me cut my own hair, without having any prior experience. Layering the back is a bit hard, my hair is rather wavy, but the end result is better than many haircuts I have had in the past. Thank you for sharing!!

Little Jazz Bird: I have been cutting my own hair since I was in high school. I think I have the knack since I always get lots of compliments. This is a great tutorial. My hair is long and all one length for the first time ever and I want to try something new. Thank you!

Stacey: Thank you! My daughter is a licensed stylist and hates when I cut my own hair. She lives 4 hours away and I get a little impatient in between visits and this time with your directions I believe she won't be quite as upset. My hair looks good and I personally enjoy your jokes. I am going to refer her to your site as a professional there are always this vs we can learn from our peers. Again, thank you.

Christal Mackey: Red flags , the client looks terrified, and the hair expert HAS NO HAIR!!!!

Yvonne Tiller: Thank you for posting this in such detail! I have thin, coarse hair (to my waist in back) and may let my daughter attempt a long multi-layered cut from long bang legnth in front to longer back. I wondered about the vertical scissor cutting and appreciate a seasoned professional's opinion/tip. I will share this with her. (She's been cutting and coloring her own hair better than any nearby rural salon for at least 5 years!)❤

hailee: did this on my friend and it looks amazing !! The front layer frame her face so well :)

Cora Pirvu: I wish I could post a picture to show you guys how good it came out! I never looked so good after any salon visits, this is the best video, very easy to follow.

Susanai Aulds: Dang. This tutorial is so awesome. I’ve tried some seemingly easier, gimmicky layer cuts, but this is the way it’s done. And I think I can do it! After a year of COVID and bad DIY cuts, my hair is in pretty bad shape and this is just what I need to get it back into shape. Thank you!

Hartleyb83: I just cut layers in my hair following this tutorial. Thank you so much for saving me a trip to the salon. The best part is that it made my curls more bouncy! I love it! I’ve been on a no heat, hair restoration journey ever since my hair decided that it wanted to be curly after I had to have a hysterectomy so this helped my hair look sooo much better! THANK YOU!!!

Ronda Banin: I just finished following along. I love it. Turned out great! You're a life saver. I was sporting covid hair. All freshened up now. Thank you so much xox

Michelle C Bonner: I have been using your salon videos to cut my hair for years. Before each cut I would re-watch your layers video. As a compliment to you I want to say when the hairdresser asked when I had my last professional cut and I told him I was in his chair for my first professional cut, He made a couple quick snips and said, you could really just keep cutting your own hair and gave me big discounts on the whole process. I will say your salon videos are better than your DIY videos. Thanks for your expertise, you instruction has allowed me to maintain a cut I love.

hanahime1027: Your instruction is very easy to follow and my layers turned out really good. Thank you!!

Leah J: This was extremely helpful. I have cut my own hair for many years. It’s done in layers also I followed your video and did a pretty good job. I was a professional hairstylist many years ago. But had to leave due to medical issue. I appreciate all your tutorials. Thanks

tabbbb15: I’ll try this tutorial for my hair cut. Insert SpongeBob scene. “One eternity later. “ It is beautiful!! I’m a perfectionist and it look me like three hours to do this 1st time cutting my own hair and I’m pretty sure I nailed it ‍♀️ thank you for this video!

Jod3lay: Thank you for this clear and complete tutorial. This is exactly what I need during lockdown!! Feeling very inspired now...

Diane Bennett Legare: Thanks Salon Guy! This actually helped me go from a disaster to compliments. From a gal who pulls no punches. I am no whiz but carefully following along “oh what a relief it is!”. Recommend.

One Minute of My Day: Thank you for fixing my head. I had followed a tutorial by someone else and my hair looked horrible. You gave such clear guidance that I was able to figure out how to repair it without shaving it all off.

Tina Martinez: The client looks very concerned the whole video

Jules Servant of Jesus: You are an excellent teacher! I haven't been a professional stylist in over 30 years. I am now having to use my old skills to cut my hair at home as I am high risk. I've been wanting to cut some shorter layers so I am really thankful for your video! I think your jokes are funny! My husband is bald & Beautiful! God bless you! Stay safe! ✝️‍♀️

52hello25: Just tried this and it came out really nice! I had tried other people's tutorials, but they were too complicated and I messed up my hair. This tutorial was easy to follow and helped me fixed what I had botched before. Thanks!

eowyn2424: Thank you sooooo much for this tutorial! I cut my hair straight after watching this video! I kept referring to this video step by step as I was cutting my hair, hoping for the best. The result? I love it! I recently invested in an inexpensive hair dressing set. It has a pair of cutting shears, thinning shears, 2 hairclips & a hair dressing comb. Thanks again!

Dot Sturgeon: Hi. Just finished cutting my own hair using your method and I love it! Thank you for your tutorial. It was. Very easy to follow.

Christie Yuanita: It's very helpful. I love layered hair style, especially long layered since I usually have my hair long. Back at college I used to cut my own hair too. And...due to the pandemic I just haven't got the guts to go the hair salon. So, thanks for the tutorials!

Serenity Peace: Thank you! I’ve been doing this for 15 years, and this is confirmation I’ve been doing it right. The only thing different is that I just grab it and cut, I don’t section it off and take my time. Lots of practice behind me, though. Your video was the best I’ve seen!

WE THE PEOPLE SOCIETY: Thank you for this tutorial. I did just as you said and gave myself a beautiful haircut that my husband loved. Thank you as I am a visual learner and your instruction was fabulous. Thank you

Joan Allen: Talk about disasters...I've had so many at the hairdressers. I'd love to know what your philosophy is on thinning thick hair. So many hairdressers have been too scissor-happy and ended up chopping into my hair so much with thinning scissors, leaving unsightly gaps and unintentional shorter sections. Traumatising..

Maryann Martin: I’ve watched your video a couple of times and decided to follow it to cut my hair this morning. I watched a segment, then stopped the video and cut. Then, I watched another segment and did the same thing until I was finished. It took me two hours. I washed my hair and the cut looks pretty good. I have curly hair so that makes it somewhat forgiving, but I felt like you really presented this well and it helped me a lot. Thank you.

Lyn Wesemael: Well after a year of not having my hair cut or coloured in UK lockdown, this 56 yr old has to thank you for making her feel human again! I just followed this video and still need hairdresser but it has bought me time until salons open. Thank you so much!

momma1208: I've been cutting my children's and husband's hair for years and though it looked good, I couldn't get it quite how I wanted it... you explained it so well and my daughter can't wait for me to cut her hair!

calistiae: this haircut tutorial created a long layered haircut better than the stylist that cut it in person pre-pandemic! nice! thank you!

Susan C: Thank you! This was awesome. I used this and another tutorial (one that had some shortcuts) and successfully cut my own hair. Now that I have more confidence I can do this, I’m going to use your video step by step next time. I appreciate it!

Eliza Teal: So refreshing to see a hairdresser who isn’t full of himself, great job!

Cherry undercover: Okay i've been cutting my own hair for 7 years( simple cuts) and I decided to get a bit more 'sophisticated' lol and tried this tutorial. I just did and it looks amazing. Go for it guys if u have any second thoughts, u know your hair will always grow back even if u went wrong.

For Peace: I have always wondered about the detail of the layering. Thank you very much, I understand the process a little better. Sometimes to save money or when there is an unexpected lock down, which never in my life thought would happen. We must do things ourselves. I am a do it yourselfer anyway. I look back and my mom cut our hair. Or, we just let it grow. You are a kind person to share your years of experience. Thank you so much!

Lillidid: I’ve been cutting my own hair into layers for 4yrs, feeling like I missed a step cuz it doesn’t end up looking quite the way I wanted but idk why?? lol NOW it all makes sense the way you said each section should match up, etc... Thanks so much! So excited to go cut my hair now lol Thoughts and prayers, y’all...

mrs32509: You made it look easy enough to do at home ourselves, our 13yr old has been cutting her Dad's hair for months now. I think its time she goes at her Mama's hair too! Thank you for this!

Lisa Clark: My hair is short now, it takes along time to grow out which is what I plan to do, I loved watching you cut the hair, and layer it. I Plan to get my hair cut and shaped next week! Now I know the correct way it should be done. Thanks so Much!

Melisah Bordes: Loved this video! I moved to Phoenix 2 years ago and prior, had one amazing woman who cut my hair back in Chicago for 12 years. Your technique looks exactly like hers and she was literally the best, flawless haircuts every time. I have long, fine hair and cutting your own hair IS difficult, but it CAN be done with patience and understanding the sections of the hair and so forth. Like many, tired of going to salons with stylists that can't seem to do a basic angling/layering, so I think it'll be up to my own attempts to try to recreate what my longtime stylist used to do for me (unless I can convince her to move to Phoenix lol)... Thank you for this. Going to invest in a pair of shears and proceed slowly :)

Erin Brown: LOVE LOVE LOVE THIS!!! Thank you!!! I have not been able to get out into a salon for a long time so I really appreciate this educational video!!! Can’t wait to put some layers in!!!!

Miss A: Great tutorial. This tutorial made my hair look really nice. The front is blended nicely. Easy face frame helps to blend the hair around the ear with the front and back hair. I learned three new things. How to even the front face frame. how blow drying to the front compliments this cut. And the face frame cut helps to blend the front hair with the back. I used your technique in 10 sections. My right and left side had a top front, bottom front, back top, bottom top, and then the whole section above the ears. My hair was already straight expect for my bangs so i started with the layers then the face frame.

Kathy G: I’ve been cutting my own hair since I was 14, I’m 61 now, I also cut my husband’s hair, I’ve been cutting many other people’s hair for years, I just couldn’t afford to go to school for it! I just like watching your videos and others to get tips and new ways to do cuts or new hairstyles. Thank you for the videos and tips!

Jacqui Fitz: This is brilliant, thanks so much for sharing. Just used it for the 3rd time and find that it gets easier each cut.

Wendi P: Great tutorial - exactly what I was looking for! Thank you!!!

Alexa Thomas: I watched your video and followed your method step by step and I just want to say Thank you! My hair looks and feels amazing! I can’t wait to jokingly tell my friends I learned how to give myself an awesome haircut from a bald stylist on YouTube! Seriously though..very helpful. You’re awesome.

Cindy Dexter: Thank you for posting this video. I've always been someone who has gone between cutting my own hair at home and going to a professional. There's more to going to a salon than just a haircut. Having a great customer relationship with a stylist is fun too.

Manuel: Thanks for this tutorial! My mother doesn’t want to go to the hair dresser and she struggles to cut her own hair, so I am going to cut her hair for the first time in my life, and this is excellent tutorial, hope I don’t mess things up! D:

Sew-what: Stephen, I can’t tell you how much I appreciate this video. I’ve watched hours of your videos, and this one came by at the perfect time. Brilliant ❤️

Onyxpony: Thank You! I especially appreciated how you separated the hair into sections and explained why it needed to be done that way. Sometimes people tell us 'what' to do but without the "why". Knowing that helps me want to take the time to do it as explained so it actually comes out correctly. Realizing the angle of the scissors makes such a difference was also VERY helpful. Now, I need to watch your videos about blow drying hair. Nicely done!

Caia 88: Great video! I have checked several different videos of other people who teaches who to do the layer, but your one was the best! I am going to cut my daughter's hair today with your instructions. Thanks so much xxx

Annie Poyaoan: Thank you Mr Salon Guy ! my hair felt lighter and looks a lot better by snipping off a few here and there following your simple instructions !!

Janyhollo: Completely understand we should go to a professional but with Covid and some sickness . I SO appreciate you doing this fir in between!!!!! Thank you thank you!!!!!! You’re a good person!!

Jayne O'Connor: Excellent! You helped me fix something I started and knew would not be right. Many, many thanks for your great teaching technique and knowledge

Claudia Castillo: This was exactly how I wanted my hair to be cut. I have long unlayered hair and I was looking for a shorter haircut with volume. Thank you for your knowledge.

jennifer killgren: Super helpful! Thank you for sharing. I needed to lighten things up after doing my initial cut and this video was just what I needed. Keep telling the jokes! The world could use some humor :)

Sonerila: So helpful. You used the word "disaster" three times which gave me pause, but I'm going to try this. Thank you for taking the time. You're very detailed & that's exactly what we need.

Suzanne Pitner: Okay, I just discovered your channel, followed your video as I did my cut, and Wow! My hair looks better than it has in two years! My stylist moved out of state and I haven't found another stylist I like and trust. You did a great job teaching some good strategies! Thanks!

diane strutz: Thank you! Excellent tutorial for those of us who would very willingly pay big bucks for a flattering style but find it harder and harder to find a stylist with your expertise.

Lila💜: Absolutely amazing, thanks to you now I cut my hair at home and end up with a very nice result. Thank you!!!!

jackandlill: Yes, thank you - very helpful! I'm gearing up to trim my angled bob - so I've been watching your vids for those - but this was helpful just to understand layering in general!

Lynpops: Love your tutorials. Have always hated going to the salon as they never seem to cut my hair how I want them to. Now my hair looks exactly how I want thanks to you!....

Nick Barker: Great stuff. Thank you so much Salon Guy . Watched your video several times and then my wife let me tackle her hair for the first time since February 2020. She was a little nervous at first, but after following your video and cutting off around 2 inches, shaping it, etc., she was really pleased with the results

Robin Q: That was really a big help on how to set the line on top for the rest. I knew I was doing it wrong but did not know why. I get this!

NYC Marketing: I did, and it looks phenomenal! Thank you so much!

Lilian O: Thank you so much! I'm 62 and have long white/gray hair that has become too long (pandemic) and is scraggly looking. I'm going to bring my length up maybe 3 inches and add some layering. This was a great video. Thanks!

Tracie Sammut: This was EXTREMELY HELPFUL thank you for showing me how to do layers at home. The more tutorials I take would make me a better hairdresser. I am a visual person and enjoy watching you and your training. I am a trained salon assistant completing my pre apprenticeship course and itching to start my Certificate 3 Hairdressing at TAFE NSW

Teresa Welch: Thank you for this video. Not only that I was able to cut my own hair, it came out good too.

Ani K: Thank you so much. Followed your video step by step and my hair has never looked this good. You’re a great teacher. Saved video for future!

victoria pereira: Love your no fuss videos, they are very helpful and easy to follow. thank you !

Rexxy: Been cutting my own hair for six years but never managed layers. This helped a lot, thanks <3

Leslie Baier Muscolo: Extremely helpful! This is the look I've wanted to achieve, and until I find a new stylist, this is perfect.

Bobbi Sparrow: You're a very good teacher! And I'm never going to cut my own hair ever again (except my bangs). All the angles are just too difficult as well holding scissors while looking in the mirror. Will check out your other videos; this is the very 1st I've seen. Again, you communicate easily and well. And keep the jokes coming because laughter really is the best medicine. Dr. Bobbi

Caren Adams: Thank You!!! I feel confident to try this cut, because you gave clear and precise instructions.

Iram Khan: I just did the same and my hair looks absolutely amazing

Elizabeth Downey: Did your latest tutorial on the front, did this till 27:35 stopped and did the unicorn cut. Perfection!! ❤️❤️❤️

Patricia Via: I've been cutting my own hair & coloring since I was 12. This was very informative and the perfect cut for my 58 yr.old self. THANKS

Czarina Pasia: Thank you for this tutorial! I had to fix a bad haircut I had myself and you helped greatly.

Andrea Pannucci: This was TREMENDOUSLY helpful. I actually used this to add layers to a ball jointed doll wig I made and will save for the others. This was easy to follow and really appreciate the frank talk. Thank you!!!

Elisa Andres: Perfect tutorial, thanks for sharing your amazing talent on hair cutting technuque, love it!

Pebbles523: Most important thing to any hair cut is always at the end checking for any points. If you don't do that at the end of the cut you won't have a perfect shape. You check from the nape of the neck and work your way into the crown. I have 33 yrs in the business and was taught by a man named Edward who did the hair to the stars. He learned a lot from Jozea Ebaèr. He's the absolute best in the business. JMO!

Katarina S.: Thank you, I appreciate that you share your knowledge and talents with us. All of your tutorials are very helpful but this one is particularly thorough. I have a question I'm hoping you can answer because I've had different stylists do this different ways. I wondered if you always part down the middle when sectioning and cutting hair? My daughters and I all side part (always) and I find that when stylists part down the middle when cutting, then our hair is overly layered on the heavier side of the part and not layered enough on the side with less hair, which leaves the hair looking unbalanced, flat on the side with less hair and quite full on the heavier side. I hope that makes sense. So I wondered how you handle that? I've asked stylists to cut our hair with the side part instead of down the middle in order to avoid the issue and make the hair look more even, but I wondered if it's considered "wrong" and if it should be cut with a middle part and then later somehow fixed to make it more balanced, and if so how would it be corrected for a side part later?
