Hi, my name is Jack Davis and I work at the john frieda salons in london and I'm here today to recreate the 1940's retro girls, a really great look that we see time and time again on the red carpet. This is Emma. Have you ever done? A 1940's look before Emma no okay, my first product I'm going to use is some frizzies. Curl Reviver mousse counts down any flyaways, but also it's quite elastic. Do you do all the way to the edge you do it all the way to the end? Okay, the next product we're going to use is the luxurious volume thickening blow-dry lotion. What we want to do is we want to achieve certain parts of lift on the head, I'm just quite casual just going to separate the hair and I'm just going to apply the product yeah. That'S it and lift it up yeah and holding a little bit away. Just apply the minute, you kind of overdrive, the hair, it loses its elasticity and it won't Bend, and it won't do things where, if you have a tiny bit of moisture, whether you use a tongs or a brush or whatever it's going to do, what you wanted To do already, you can see just by lifting those roots we're getting this nice bit of body. Okay, Emma! Now it's your turn as we kind of take the hair up. I want you to go up and then literally pull back on itself. Okay, so you're, creating that little bit of root volumes and about here yeah, that's it yeah, brilliant seems quite easy seems quite nice in the body is great. So at this stage, would I just throw my hair forward and dry-cell exactly most important thing of the look? Is the sectioning of the parting, its from the arch? Yes, we're gon na. Do the arch yeah thanks about that very good using the tail end of your comb, just make it a little bit cleaner pop your head board and take that back section you just twist that up, I'm just gon na grab one of those pins off you have You tongs before I haven't. You haven't okay, brilliant place the barrel on the hair like that and I'm going to twist the hair around once and basically leave it there for a moment. Pin up your curls and basically they'll cool down and you'll get a maximize back, because what we want to do. We want the barrel of that tongs to actually sit on the section. We don't want to drag it down and we don't want to drag it up. So, just using two fingers like the hot barrel of your tongs, just place it where the tongs was okay and very loose tension, as well. Very gentle just going to wrap your hair around your fingers take segments out of the hair. So you starting halfway down the hair instead of at the top. What we want is maximum volume to the top. We want this to be quite compact, just with movement through the front. Basically, that should take 30 minutes max getting you all. Prepped go off, get ready. Now we've come to the final part of this look and, as we can see, emma is looking absolutely amazing for just quite gently. You can start taking a few at that side. We'Re just brushing the whole thing through its gon na. Take it all over to one side: we've had all that body in there, but because we've put it in, don't be afraid to really pull it out again. Okay, to give us and much more kind of up-to-date kind of feel just going to finish with one more fantastic product, just the sheer blondes fun gold BAM, I'm literally just going to work this through the hair, we're just going to finish there with some crystal hold. Sheer blond hairspray, which is a basically hairspray that keeps the color true to itself what an amazing look on Emma's hair we've created

Meg Nevermore: I super appreciate that he's teaching HER how to do it instead of doing it himself. It's one thing to have a stylist handling it all for you. It's another to do it yourself and have to correct the way you're holding a curling iron in the mirror.

Julie Eide: For the ones unsatisfied with the brushing out: I understand your rage, but if he didn't brush it out, it would just be curls. Period. The modern-retro, 1940's look IS this wavy, brushed out thing. A bit Veronica Lake (unless you do the tighter, over-night curls ofc.) I do agree that the balm makes it too greasy near the roots. But other than that, this looks like a REALLY easy 1940's look, instead of the hours and hours of pincurling. + The bumping cheat-trick near the roots: New trick there!

LAMSCHICK0104: I like how they show a client doing the techniques and him correcting her. It helps you learn how to teach a client.

Pronita Barua: Oh my she looked like an art piece. Beautiful. Makeup subtle and so was the dress and the hairstyle.

Jody Hakala: Love the vintage the wave, classy look but my favorite part is the when she’s actually doing it then she’ll want to try to do it again for her hair in the future 1920s 30s was fantastic

Blanca Camargo: Que amable, me encantó el tutorial!

Milena: Sooooo gorgeous, I loved it!!

Banger07: Such a classic look. Thank you for uploading this tutorial. Why do so many people always have to make snide comments like they're the best hairstylist? You wouldn't be watching this tutorial if you knew how to do this, now would you?

T M: Totally agreed! Without the brushing there would be no point in calling it retro. Also, these tricks will save loads of time when I can't sleep in pin-curls <3 this tutorial.

Barbara Wilson: Gorgeous!  I love this.

Debora Montemurro: She's adorable and I really like the fact the he gives her the chance to try on her own the hairstyle! Lovely! :)

Tricia MsSenseNSensibility: I like how he lets her try each step as well. Very pretty style and technique.

Paula Elisa: Muchas Gracias !!! Aunque es en inglés , respondiste a muchas preguntas que tenia con solo ver el vídeo !!! Hermoso !!!

AnnathePiana: I miss the Spun Gold hair pomade so much! It was really unique as it had a shimmer which complemented blonde hair.

wittysophisticate: Love this method!

Karma Train: I find it hilarious that all these products were "needed" to achieve a style from over 75 years ago.

kaylashalaylaaaaa: this was a GREAT tutorial until he flattened out those waves and took away half the AMAZING volume! i mean i have high hopes now, as a fellow natural blonde with fine fair, i couldn't believe how much volume he achieved, her hair was very fine and flat before.

Corey Anderson: I will say though, John Frieda products are very good. I loved their Sheer Blonde. They used to have this deep conditioner in the Sheer Blonde line that they must not have anymore that was AWESOME. I wish they still had that stuff.

Fatina Attieh: The way he explains is super amazing

Mel Stevens: Just lovely! I NEED to try out this tutorial with my karmin clipless curling iron. I hope to get it right

Pam Hanson: Beautiful look on a lovely, charming model.

Luissy Ortiz: loved it!! thanks!!

Dalix: i screamed when he brushed it. he could've ran his fingers through it or used a wide comb.

natsmillie: Beautiful hair and Jake seems lovely!

Cici: C'est magnifique :)

belinda z: I like how they had the model herself do it as well!

Delson Galasinao: I love the retro 40.s curls .

Carol Rivas Angulo: Fantástico.súper para dar volumen a chicas con poco CABELLO

75vasso: why does it seem so easy when you watch, and when you do it yourself, it 's nothing like that at all?

chrissy morales: Beautiful!!!

Dahlias & Salvias: I don't know why everyone is freaking out about the hair brushing. The final look he had was the look he was aiming for which is more delicate waves, if he wanted big crazy curls he would have done it otherwise.

cestrc: Amazing video! Was wondering would it affect the result if I used hair conditioner as I wash my hair?

MizztressOfSpices: I really like Emma's lovely manner as well...poor her when he starts brushing in a crazy way not even being considerate to her! Didn't like that part...hair is delicate! The hair looked way nicer when just being released...did not like the violent brushing technique!

bonekinhadlixo: I love it!!!

Jessica Bresler: Hey how would a girl do Penelope Garcia’s hair style from Criminal Minds season 5 episode 6? It’s this cute retro office updo that I love ❤️

Freddie Mercury: “To give it a much more ‘up to date’ kind of feel”, I thought that these were RETRO curls!!!

Hereslooknatyoukid: I never realized one was supposed to begin side part at the arch of the eyebrow…. I’ve been doing this wrong for 15 years

Ann N: This is my favourite of all the hollywood curls tutorials I've seen!

Liliane Fazan: perfeitooo

ddd zzz: I loved it. Thanks

Maddie Covert: So pretty love it :) :o

Erika Valido: este hombre es un groso

CHARLES CLOPTON: I had a difficult time keeping my attention on the hair styling. It looked great when finished but Emma had one of the prettiest faces I've ever seen. I am 100% gay but beauty is beauty.

helloitsmeitsme16: i have sooo much volume in my hair. its insane. but i love it! id hate to have to tease my hair

Priya Sharma: Really nice & easy

300mirrors: Oh my gosh I agree with everyone, it looked beyond flawless at 4:00, after the balm and the brush out it looks terrible.

Lisa Russell: I like this but it's not 'retro' enough for the 40s. Love to see a model that actually participates!

BriBear0611: omg dont rip her head off!!! hes so heavy handed

Josie Tiller: Love it

Melanie Rose: This is awesome!

Mel Reh: Omg this is one of the nicest one I've seen so far

Vegan Candy: I am blond and used to use John Frieda sheer blond products, but stopped when I learned they are not cruelty free.

blightedangel: In the 40s, ladies curled their hair with setting lotion, water, and then finished with a swipe of pomade. That's it!

Hadeel Al-Digs: Amazing <3

fatima zahra: Top

Shane O'Neill: love love love it will have to give it a go

Shery Salama: Should use less product to avoid greasy look & could use a wide comb instead of the brush to achieve volume without messing all the work.

FranceVintageAmour: my gosh I love that model's face she is absolutely stunning! her face is so vintagey ;] <3 <3 <3

kaguilar9989: That is 100% true! While watching it I was thinking that it looked better before he brushed out all the curls

Aliona With Love: omg these techniques are amazing, check out how I dressed mine out in the latest beauty vid xo

gavloft: wow i feel a million dollars with this new hair style

KatkaBomba: whenever i try to do the thing with the blowdrying lotion and the blowdrier to lift my roots and volume them up i get a harsh line when i dry it , because of the brush that i pull back

J Riley: this is a perfect example of overdoing a style: when you get it perfect (it was beautiful and vintage until he brushed it all out.. why!) and then you ruin it, keep messing with it and putting way more product in it than you need. gorgeous, polished look ruined once again by overstyling. tsk.

Naomi Steemans: It looked very good without brushing it so harshly... and in the end it just looked greasy. So many products, bleh. Shame, she has very nice hair.

Rylie Pearson: I would just do the uprooting thing and the parting because I think it looks good that way

Black Kittens: It looked gorgeous at 3:58 and then a whole lot of nothing much after that.

s c: Gorgeous

Carla G Portilla: He is a great teacher! I just think he brushed out most of the curls. She has very thin, scarce hair so you go lighter in that last step! But I liked it

Vicky Castillo: I like this very much :D

GHD: BEAUTIFUL
