In this video I share why your hair sticks up. Hair sticks up mainly for 2 reasons. Your hair type and hair length. If you hair is very thick and dense, most likely it will stick up on the sides, if you have a cowlick or swirl that may also cause it to stick up. In this video I share some of my hair tips on how to prevent your hair from sticking up.

Hey YouTube stevedore Salonga here, and why does your hair stick up? Well, that's gon na be the topic of today's video and as a stylist for over 20-something years. I'M going to share with you my insight to why this happens and let's get started so there's a mostly one or two main reasons why your hair will stick up from the sides or threat the back here. First of all, it's the hair texture a lot of times. I'Ve noticed with like Asians or really thick hair. The hair has a tendency to stick out no matter what like this, it pokes out, and it's just a disaster. You can't do anything to cut it down. It'S just because one, the hair is so dense, it's so thick and because of the way it grows out from the head. Traditionally, the sides of the hair most of the times while either grows straight down this way or in certain areas in through here where it tends to stick up a lot. The hair is growing out from the head straight out from the head like this okay. So what happens is because it's so dense, the hair is actually just going to want to stick straight out, no matter what. So if you don't, if it's too long, the problem is that that's what it's gon na do it's going to kind of stick out like this, and you can't really do anything about it unless you plaster it down with you know, hair gel or something like that, And you know the second thing mostly, is because of calyx, alright, a cowlick or a swirl, and that basically means that you know the hair grows into a circular pattern right and throughout the top back of the head, you can get them on the sides. You can even get them in the front into here, but it's basically a growth pattern where the hair is growing almost around in a circle that what happens is say this hair goes around this way. If you go against it see what it does, it wants to spring right back up and that's basically because you're going against the way the hair grows. When you go against anything guess what he wants to do, the opposite thing. So what you need to do is need to actually comb it in the way it grows, and that will help prevent that cowlick from sticking up, as you can see, look at it instantly kind of see what I did there it instantly now is laying flatter, because I comb the hair in a direction that it goes and you do that by looking in the mirror and experimenting take a mirror. Look at the back of your head in the other mirror and you can see just play around and comb it and you'll be able to maneuver the hair. Now here is some other tips when it comes to the hair sticking out on the sides of your head. So if the hair sticking out on the sides of your head, what you need to do same thing if the hair is growing forward, what you need to do is need to actually comb the hair forward like this. So what lays flatter to the head? If the hair grows forward and you try to comb it back, watch what's gon na happen, it wants to spring back forward and guess what it's gon na want to stick out, because the hairs like uh-huh don't call me that way. It'S it's gon na want to like create a reaction which is the opposite way of how it's growing. So if you want to get that hair to lay flatter in certain areas, you know you tell your style. Oh, so you tell your barber look. My hair grows down this way. It sticks up. If you try to go against it, can you please cut it that it lays down flatter and through here same thing on this side, and I have loads and loads of clients that have that problem, and once you show them this little trick here then they're, like Oh, my gosh, why don't you told me this like 15 years ago? This is like a life saver, so always comb the hair in the direction it goes and you'll be able to get the hair to lay flatter to the head same thing with women's hair. Okay, women's hair, what you need to do is you need to really create a lot of volume and texture, especially when it comes to shorter hair. So there's a lot of times. You could actually use the hair sticking up to your advantage, especially if you're looking for more of a cropped, layered cut we're safe, for example. You know the client has a kalak right in through here, or you have a caliper right in through here. If you're, just a client watching this, you know cut it short enough that you can embrace the cowlick, you can embrace the texture that it sticks up, that it becomes part of the style alright. So, instead of this part, sticking up in one area like this, you know kind of cut the hair a bit shorter and go for more of a crop type, look and incorporate that into the style so that everything looks kind of like PC and everything looks like It'S standing up, so it looks a bit more uniformed and and it's part of the actual style another way to get rid of the hair from sticking out is I hate to say it but cut it short, okay, cut it really really short, so so much so That when you cut the hair, it actually prevents it from sticking out from the head, because it's so short, that's like an old trick. It'S really the best thing you can do, especially on Asian hair, just really really take it in short and try to come up with a haircut that is going to complement the look being really really tight in through here and that you can have it blended too. They have some length on the top. You know, that's where maybe an undercut or a slight disconnection may come in handy where you have this taper down nice and close in through here, especially if it's in the size. I knows a lot of people. The hair really sticks out on this side and on this side on specific types of ethnicities and hair textures. It really really wants to poke out here. So that's where you have to be careful but cut it short enough that you know what it's not gon na. Stick out and by the time it does that's when it's you're, due for a haircut and one more where sometimes people complain that the hair just keeps falling down. This way keeps falling flat. Honestly, it comes down to if your hair is not long enough, guess what it's not gon na go back, see how long this is. You run your fingers to it and guess what look it stays back? It'S that simple! It'S really no secret to it! The hair needs to be long enough, and people gon na ask me how long I have no idea grow it for as long as it takes for it to stay back. That'S all I could say you know if it keeps falling forward. It'S gon na. It'S not long enough, so keep growing it and growing it until you can have your hair go back and also it's the same thing. If your hair tends to stick up in certain areas or if your hair tends to have weird waves in it one, it could be the way it's cut. I'Ve seen people you know stylish for barbers cut. Hair are the top where they just friggin hack, the top, and it's got all sorts of weird waves in it and stuff. And it's just because it's so hacked up on the top of their head, that it's not allowing for the hair to actually lay in its normal state. You know if you've got a lot of inconsistencies in the haircut. Well, guess what the whole hairstyle is gon na be inconsistent. It'S not gon na look right, so you need to have your hair very balanced, okay, and you need to make sure it's long enough that it will help the hair and what we call or say weigh it down that longer, hair will weigh down the hair so That it can lay flatter and that it won't stick up so make sure that if you're looking for a longer hairstyle or you've got some hair with out the sides here, it's got to be long enough and you need the right products to help tame it. Dora Smith: I have a different problem. I have just started cutting my hair very short because of covid. I am using a hair clipper and they can't do longer than 2 inches. 2 inches was much longer so I'm doing 1 1/2 inches on top and upper sides, and half an inch on back and lower sides. My problem, ALL of the hair on top of my head sticks straight up - while hair on the upper sides the same length lies flat. Mousse causes it to stick straight up and look spiky. Jonathan Rogers: I used to have that blonde California hair look when I was younger my hair would actually go down but it was thick ASF for many years I cut my hair short especially since I started to see thinning spots etc. But now that I'm trying to let it grow out it's pretty much like a white guy's afro it just completely sticks out everywhere. duy nguyen: i have a typical asian hair texture which means i always have to have my sides cut as short as possible. but my barber usually left some kind of length between the middle part and the sides which annoyingly stick out, can i have them cut off? will that somehow affect badly on the general apperance?

Ben Sharpe: good video with great instructions as like all the tuturials you give. can you please make or show some mens ponytail cuts, both short and long or maybe even a modern mullet with ponytail. also maybe a fringe cut on top, with a fading on sides and at the back, but with a medium to longer ponytail similiar to the top kots. simply a clean look with a medium cut on top and sides, for wearing caps.
