For this historic hairstyle, you will need:

- Vodka

- Gum arabic

- Rose oil

- Hairpins

- A hair comb

HOW TO BE A VICTORIAN by Ruth Goodman is a radical new approach to history; a journey back in time more intimate, personal and physical than anything before.

We know what life was like for Victoria and Albert. But what was it like for a commoner like you or me? How did it feel to cook with coal and wash with tea leaves? Drink beer for breakfast and clean your teeth with cuttlefish? Dress in whalebone and feed opium to the baby? Surviving everyday life came down to the gritty details, the small necessities and tricks of living.

Hello, I'm Ruth Goodman, and I have indeed written said book. I'Ve also brought here my willing victim. You are willing on you, yeah, she's, feeling rather good tonight, a moment because I'm going to do a hair now. The first thing to say, of course, is that the marvelous lily has the perfect Victorian hair. This is not just nice hair. This is what every Victorian girl dreamt of you are so lucky look for start. It'S the right color, it's a nice pale blonde, but not white blonde. That would not be so cool. It'S definitely not ginger, which is good thing. See this not really attractive this very attractive. Then it's straight. This is a good thing, most Victorian hairstyles, at least for the first three quarters of the reign really needed straight hair and then the next thing is there's loads of it. It'S not only long, but it's thick, you lucky lucky lucky girl. So how about? If we go for the really beginning of victoria's, reins all right here, yeah, so 1839 1839, in which case you need a double parting, because for a very short period it was fashionable not to have a single center parting, but have a V shaped party. So banda lien is well it's what hairspray. Basically it's not going to be sprayed on it's going to be put on the comb and put on, but other than that it's a very similar product to hairspray. So I'm going to start with this stuff, which is gum arabic, you're, probably very familiar with it. You'Ve been using it and probably eating it, all your life, it's in many foods, including lots of sweets, it's the same stuff that used for doing watercolor paints, and now it's got so many uses. I can hardly remember them all now. That should be plenty and then the next thing I'm going to do is to add some rose oil. You really don't need much of that. That'S enough tiny amount, tying your tiny little bit strong stuff and then our other ingredient, vodka, any white spirit to do Gina. Do just as well and that thins the whole thing as well as acting as a preservative and that believe it or not as your hairspray, so it's normally applied either with the finger just too hot. You know, you've got a wispy. You would just pop it on your own finger just a little bit and then just brush it in over to a little bit that you want to hold in place or you can comb it in sort of earlier on in the procedures, and it will behave just Like just like her, a hairspray holding you, presumably against whatever the weather, can throw at you, so there you go all you need now is a bonnet, I'm so sad you didn't bring. It definitely should have brought a bonnet I've written this book. All about being an ordinary victorino, your kings and queens, and your politicians who honestly for me a little but the rest of us, you and me it's about the nitty gritty in the details of being a human being in Victorian London in Victorian Liverpool in Victorian countryside Anywhere in Britain you

Tara P: I want to spend a day with this woman! She's just so ... FUN! Lively, entertaining, intelligent all at once!

Louisa Jane: Ruth has reawakened my love of history! Her enthusiasm and joy for reviving the past is heartwarming. Keep the fantastic media coverage coming! Thank you.

So she says: Ruth has an amazing positive energy.

Marige OBrien: I LOVE Ruth Goodman! She has done the one thing I always wished would be done about history-- the daily lives of normal people. Historians have always only focused on the easy stuff, i.e., the big battles, the aristocrats. Those are easy because both had the luxury of record keepers and writers at the time. How hard is it to read an old book? Okay, assuming one understands the language. But, like Ruth, what has always fascinated me is how the average person lived. So little is known about them. Only a select few writers (Charles Dickens comes to mind) bothered with the common people. Now they are the greatest mystery. I've loved Ms. Goodman's series of how people lived and only wish she could do more of them, taking on even earlier ages if possible. Is there any hope for that?

hellotelephone1: Someone give this woman a history show to narrate!! she is so enthusiastic and entrancing to learn from!

HearthMaiden: Oh I love Ruth :3 She's like the most bubbly and intelligent woman ever. I love her.

S1NB4D: Just been watching Tudor Farm with Ruth Alex and Peter which i thoroughly enjoyed also.

KL: I have this book :) Ruth Goodman is awesome. I just watched her in "Victorian Pharmacy" here on YouTube. She also has a book "How to act like a Tudor"

Megadriver: I love Ruth Goodman, she's so full of energy and so knowledgeable on history. I'd love to spend the day with her and just soak in all the history and quirky facts she knows about people's lives. Her enthusiasm is enough to relight the love of history in anybody's heart. It's really interesting to learn how most people lived throughout history. Forget your kings and queens, how did the people live... That's what's interesting, without a thousand servants and without imported goods from other countries. And no matter how gritty of a job, Ruth dives right into it. Instead of just taking a glance at what record keepers wrote, ramble for a bit and then taking a big, fat, tv paycheck. Ruth Goodman is a legend. I hope she inspires many future historians that follow in her footsteps and keep uncovering the lives of the people of yesteryear. PS: I really hope her daughter has the same love for history and goes on to make more historical films. She could definitely pull it off, given how she's been in a bunch of the farm series episodes and even the castle building ones.

zincink: Wow love the hair spray tips. My grams said they used to pour Witch Hazel on a brush and brush it through to get rid of the dirty hair. I want this book for my birthday..it would be a hoot to read.

Crystal - Queen of the Delta Blues: I just love Ruth. Shes so down to earth and is exceptionally good explaining things. Thanks for this book Ruth, I look forward to more from you

grace brockway: i do so agree with her view of history - that learning about the way everyday life was lived by ordinary people are much, much more interesting than learning about than the wars, and the royals. i always thought history was boring until i worked at a living history museum where the focus was on day to day life for the average people.

Yajie Liu: her daughter showed up in a few episodes of her historical farm series (check it out - you are welcome) and she's really grown up! beautiful and lovely

SkyMuse: Ruth, NEVER change! Your positivity is infectious

Kristofer Kristensen: Reading her book now. Can't put it down. It's so well written and well put together.

Elfy: Really hope to meet Ruth one day- she's definitely my favourite historian. I love the side of history that is more concerned with the day-to-day aspects of life for 'ordinary' people. It's more fascinating.

Abc xyz: This woman has incredible energy. I wish there was more content with her out there.

Robbin Lynn Spencer-Buchtel: Mrs Goodman, Thank you so much for posting this. You have been such a wonderful inspiration to both my daughter & myself & now I have one more thing to add to our growing list of products for reenactment. We first found you on Victorian Pharmacy (which worked wonderfully for our History Lessons) & look forward to learning so much more from you & your cast mates. From the USA aka Across the pond.

(regular people like me, not wealthy ones) My dad is over 90, and me,over 60 by a few years ! ...I just found you today, and love every day history of all kinds...where do I get the book, I know Amazon right?!!... L.O.L!... Thanks again, Big Fun watching you! Saw the one with your daughter a few minutes ago,as well.... really sweet....I Lost my mom to illness, awhile ago....which is why I cherish my time with my Dad.

cabbitt511: IT'S RUTH! I know the book is about Victoriana, but, I'd be indebted if you'd do a tutorial on how to do a Gibson/Edwardian hairstyle. Especially on using false hair. We saw a bit in Edwardian Farm, but the clip with too short for me to get the idea really. Your hair is always so impressive!

Georgie Walker: I love Ruth Goodman. She is so interesting. She is bright and intellectual and so much fun. I would love to meet her

Robyn: She's so happy and passionate. A real joy to watch.

VictorianDream: The model reminds me of Maureen McCormick. Although I think dark golden blond and light brown are really pretty hair colors, I read somewhere that dark hair was (also) considered Victorian, and I think red hair is beautiful

Debra Rosman: First of all I adore Ruth and her work second, I could make my own hair spray cool ❤

mastersadvocate: I've watched Ruth Goodman be a Medieval woman, a Victorian woman, and a 1940s woman. She's so amazing! I'd love to meet her! ~ Janet in Canada

I can tell she has great enthusiasm for her work, but laughing after nearly every sentence is bothersome.
