Hello welcome to another video from AvenueX. Today, it's a very special video., I'm going to show you how I did this hair from scratch at the same time, show you a very interesting traditional, hair, styling remedy from china that has been used for women for Thousands of years. And even today, for the people Who are in Beijing opera business when the women have those curled pieces on their forehead? It'S done by this magical, styling product that comes from the barks of a particular type of tree, which is called Bao, Hua, literally meaning wood wool. The bark of the tree. That'S been sliced super thin. And the species of choice for the trees is elm tree. The type of slippery elm I'll show you what it looks: like., It's really pretty crispy and it's literally a thin slice of the bark of elm tree.. What you do with this is you cut it in small pieces and soak it with water.. You can use cold water, but if you want it to be faster, you can use warm or slightly hot water and it will immediately start to become slimy.. You can also soak a good amount and keep it in fridge for a week and use it every day., This bowl of stickiness comes from only 1 piece of the tree. Bark And i've been soaking for 24 hours.. So now I am going to show you the process of getting that hair at the beginning of this video. And i'm going to use quite a bit of the traditional chinese hair gel hair product that comes purely from nature after a day's soaking. It kind of has this texture. And what it feels like is just slimy, but it's not sticky at all. And it smells a little bit like wood because it comes from a tree, bark, obviously, but no weird offensive smell at all.. This is my first time filming a video like this.. It may just fail epically. Now, i'm just gon na wet my hand in it and then just put a little bit on my hair to stop the static, because the static is really bad right. Now.. I have an old tango teaser that really helps., Usually for chinese traditional hairstyle. You do this thing at the top of your head. You kind of part it. And the front hair is one section.. The back hair is like one major section, find the top of your head. And just go this. do like this, I'm wearing glasses, because otherwise I can't see anything and I don't wear contacts So obviously, traditionally in china. Nobody has glasses.. So on the side, it will just look like this.. It doesn't have to be perfect. Really. Tie this up.. You know this is human attempt against the second law of thermodynamics.. The system is just always oriented towards getting more chaotic. and we're trying to fight that with hair style.. Now you have the front hair on both sides.. You need to do the back. I'll, do a very simple version. I'll, just comb my hair and make it into a high ponytail.. Now we're gon na do the back. And then do the front and then adding a little bit fake hair to make it more volume.. I happen to have a good volume of hair, but very soft.. Each strand is super soft, resulting in.. It just collapses.. If I just use my own hair, it will just flatten down give it a bit room, pull it up, find the middle of it kind of and dig a hole as clean as possible. Push the ponytail through now. It'S trough Just naturally let it fall into two parts.. These are the two parts we're gon na work. With. Now you have 1 set of hair use a little bit., You're slimy natural thing to make it tame. and I'll try to do this. The hard work of your arms starts. Tie this up.. The reason that you make the hair like this is just to make it easier later to pin it.. I remember when I was really little. I had really really hard hair like the hair that will stand up when you try to like cut it really short.. It would just go crazy. After adolescence. I think my hair just turned really soft.. Some weird things happen to you Cause I heard like some people literally have their hair turned from straight to curly overnight during their adolescence.. Now i'm just gon na make my hair into a bun on the top hope it stays there with a shit load of pins.. So this is just normal, bobbing, pin. And then i'll use. Also, U shape pins because, u shape pins, tend to work really well with this type of hair, literally like that., My hair is very, very actually stubborn., It's very hard to pin it in any place.. It will just come off. Inevitably. Later., Because it's so ... my hair is very smooth, very silky, So it glides off. Sometimes when your hair is really really straight. And silky. It'S actually not good for styling cause. It refuses to stay in any place that you want. It to. It's kind of there not perfect, but it's staying there. The back of it.. Let me see, is it too bad? I have no idea., It may look terrible.. Now I am going to do the side and then i'm going to add a little bit on top., So i'm gon na add some random stuff. This stuff, I don't know where you can get them, can't even remember.. This is just a piece of sponge that has this sticky thing and see where it should be sticking. I'll. Just do this using our elm tree. Elm, wood., Wool, soaked up natural hair, gel Bao, Hua use this., I mean it doesn't work as good like as nicely as really as hair wax that you buy. Like professional product for sure., I'm tired., It's looking, okay, but not Ideal., This is not the best again type of making your hair volume up thing.. There are better ones.. I want to get them, but I need to have them shipped from china., See how many pins i'm using just because my hair is very, very slippery. At the end of it., Just getting a little bit more. gel to hold the end on the other side, gon na feel for it an equivalent in the same kind of position.. It will be so much easier if i'm doing it on other people then say doing it on myself.. If you find those little poking out here, which happens to my hair, a lot because it's super straight, it doesn't want to curl back on the end., See like these little things coming up just add more pins. Now I have my hair like this.. If you look at the back of it, let me see how bad I look. It's not too bad., It's not terrible, but it's not ideal.. If you wan na do this type of hair and go out, you need a friend to do it with you, so they can make sure the back is perfect.. Is it just something you can get like on internet from china, but i'm not sure here where you get it. And then fake piece of hair, that's actually of a different color of my own hair., It's a little bit too brown., It's real hair.! So, thanks to that person. You can just add again the lubrication thing. on This hair. And because it's a natural product, you don't need to wash it off afterwards.. When it dries down, it doesn't get sticky., It doesn't get clumpy at all.. It'S almost like you have done nothing to your hair. It has two clips.. I have them open. Now.. I'M gon na find a place to clip this on.. Now I look like absolutely horrible ghost story. Person., Let's see if it works. I'm gon na curl. This thing. Up and up. It goes to to the top of it.. Now, what do we need shit load of pins to make sure it stays in its position? So for this type of hair, really hair wax and then pins are your best friends.. Today, i'm not using any wax and using 100 % natural thing that ancient chinese women use., But its styling power is very weak.. It wouldn't be able to give you crazy shape., But it will make it more tamed. than say if you're not using anything. The other good thing about this is it's ideal for making like the hand, pushed wavy thing., That's very popular early last century in the world, not just in the west, but also in china as well.. Those very wavy thing that you do with your hair. Like using this bao hua. To do that is ideal.. It makes it so pretty and shiny and thin non sticky, but stay in shape.. Let me put the net over it, then, just so that everything stays down. Okay And then just adding another pin to it to make sure the net sticks in. The hair is done., It's not perfect., Probably could do a better in terms of the. Yeah. It just seems this side is not as well done as it could be. And probably should leave a little bit hair here just to have a natural curl.. I don't know what .. like the back looks like, so it doesn't look too bad, but i'd say if you find there's stuff sticking out on the back and then there are empty parts. You can just add random flower. Add any big thing to hide it. And then it's good., Not too bad. It's an earring. I think it will look good and just hook it onto the air.. Isn'T that lazy Perfect.? Now I look like i'm ready for period drama apart from the glasses. Obviously, This is how I got the hair at the beginning of this video.. I am by no means an expert at making a period drama hair, And this hair is just one of the random things I come up with after watching a lot of different people's videos and kind of figure out, which one would work for my hair. And supposedly, If you use it all the time for your hair, Your hair will get really good, not splitting looking shining., Since I haven't used it for a long time extensive period. I can't tell. if that actually works, but it definitely doesn't add any burden for your hair.. I'M gon na take off everything on my hair. and let you see the process and what the hair The texture looks, like.. It'S way too much work for your hair.. This is what it looks. Like. After i've taken everything, down. See., There's no stickiness.. It'S like each strand by strand. Is each strand And obviously it's a little bit excited.. So it's like more volume.. If you look at the texture of the hair, it's extremely loose.. It'S not clumped., It's not stuck together., It doesn't ... like zero smell, but it doesn't have very strong hold of it., But then it's better than not using anything. And, like I said, if you do the beijing opera pieces of curly hair, that's literally done by one Layer of hair spread out brush with shit ton of this and then bend back and left there to dry down.. It will maintain that shape and very glossy and shiny., And I forgot to say somehow I don't know where you can buy this. In different countries.. I bought this in china., But it's very common super cheap, like dirt cheap., You buy a huge bulk that you can use for months and years.. This thing is already like 7 or 8 years old and it still works. It's dry and it doesn't go anywhere as long as you keep it and it's not mouldy. You can still use it. So depending on where you are wherever what country you are. If you have slippery elm as a tree, you may be able to find something like this.. I know I have an international audience, so I can't quite tell you where you can get it., But if you're in china you can definitely get it. Just use those two characters. bao hua You'll, get it on internet.. So that is a kind of my first weird hair video on youtube, but it's actually talking about something related to chinese drama. Period dramas, how people do hair in ancient times.. So it's still relevant to my channel.. Thank you for watching AvenueX i'll, see you in my next video.. Meanwhile live long and happy drama watching or happy hair styling

Terrijo A: In the US you can get Slippery Elm Bark (Ulmas Rubra) from here: https://pronounceskincare.com/product/certified-organic-slippery-elm-bark/. Plus this site has a little recipe for making it: https://scratchmommy.com/diy-herbal-hair-detangler-recipe/

Katarina V: "It's real hair...thanks to that person" bit was golden

Marie Maurer: "JUST ADD MORE PINS" giving me flashbacks to my ballet days

M dS: You know whats amazing? Slippery elm is the main ingredient/remedy component in a special tea used by voice performers as it is super good for the vocal chords. What a useful, multi purpose tree lol PS: girl, I feel your pain, that must have been quite an arm workout! Lucky for actresses that stylists take care of their hair/wigs during shoots, otherwise they'd all be walking around with super sore arms

Jane: Seriously, how many hair extensions would actors need for those really big hairstyles in period dramas?

humbledaisy: This is why having a maid who was good with hair was important!

Miss Sunny: Lol I find it funny that a hair styling video brings out more swearing than a bad drama rant video

Rosie S.: AvenueX, you are back with your cultural mojo. I love it when you inform, educate and fascinate us with a topic like this. Love the cultural in-depth videos. More please...xo

Sandra Santa Angel: I love it when you dress up in period costume but more than that your historically accurate glasses lol Thanks for the tutorial

Erica C: One trick that may work for you: sewing your hair! I also have long, slippery and straight hair. One time on set, the hair guy gave me an updo and pulled out a plastic needle and thread. He "sewed" around the updo and didn't have to use any pins! (HMU once used over 32 pins to hold up a ballerina bun so I feel your pain.)

Cuet7 E: It would be nice if you could do a video on the ornaments, i.e. belts, jewelry, hair accessories, etc. used in the period dramas.

Omni: Thank you for showing this. After watching The Untamed, I've really been fascinated by their hair. I'm African-American and I love the care that other cultures put into their hair. This was so very well done. I especially enjoyed the honesty of showing how those ethereal looks are achieved. Very beautiful, like you. :-)

Margie Gold: I have wondered a lot about how those neat hairstyles that I see in the dramas that you have introduced me to. I would love to see more videos showing how those hairstyles are created. Get some friends to help! I really appreciated the chinese language videos 3 years back.

Ashley: I always wondered how the women in the harem dramas had those slicked down side burns

Eli G: I love this! And as a person who also has super soft, slippery, straight hair I totally appreciate seeing just how many pins you use. I clearly need to stop holding back and just keep adding them and maybe one day my hair will stay up.

Populus euphratica: That straight hair to curly hair thing happened to me during adolescence ... Not only that, they also became slight brown from jet black...

Time Traveler: We need natural skincare tips next time

Yusnita Saptasari: I usually made my own hair gel with aloe Vera and a tea strainer. It doesn't too sticky, just like elm tree. It only last for a week if I put it in the fridge.

Shawn Yang: I attempted to do those period drama hairdos when I was a child without any hair gel but a thousand hair pins...

simstarz: You looked lovely in that hairstyle, and you did great! Haha at “Shit load of pins.” I always loved those period drama hairstyles, so it’s nice to see how one being done here. It seems like those period drama hairstylists have their works cut out for them. Bravo to them

6uiliny: Slippery elm is used as a remedy for gastritis so there's a capsule (powder) form available on iherb. If you take the powder and add water it actually turns into a slippery gel. Not sure if it's the same/as effective though.. Loved this video! Hoping to see more videos like this!

thao nguyen: I love this! Can you do a tutorial for male buns? I can never get mine to look like the ones in the costume dramas.

Ari Yu: Ah yes the wonders of Asian hair.... One time in middle school my aunt took me for a straight perm bc my hair was super wavy and poofy but the ‘straightness’ disappeared pretty much overnight

Girish Bp: This is something I have not expected, it's really good to see using natural products to maintain our hair styles. I think it's takes lots of efforts to make hair styles on your own thank you for your hard work.

chipskjaa: imagine how many pins do they use when shooting a costume drama!!!! ps. loving this content! <3

Wolf King: That was rlly pretty ~ pls do more videos explaining the different clothing and headpieces worn by women during different dynasties , as your explaining and tutorials make everything better !! Thx once again avenue x ! I rlly enjoyed that video

Sollenbum S: What a fabulous video! I have the same type of hair and have had to do a lot of experimentation to do a ballet bun that will stay in place. And yes, hair pins are the only solution to keep my hair in place.

bubbly929292: loved this video! as a person with afro hair, our hair defies gravity but styling it is not for the weak

K Flowers: @AvenueX In the black community, the wavey style that was popular in the early 20th century that you mentioned, was called "Ocean Waves." It came back into popularity in the late 90s, as well. A similar, but softer version is popular now.

Windy Nguyen: Appreciate the hard work you put in for each time cosplaying

Ruu Yin: Good hairstyles require hard work and a shitload of pins I once thought ancient people in dramas must’ve a lot of hair for those voluminous hairstyles and I never thought of wigs. I’ve been looking at and trying out hairstyles lately heck even anime hairstyles lol but I found a preference for buns using hair sticks. This style would’ve to wait ‘til I get those wig buns :).

Tenshi Grace: such a fun video wow i need that bao hua ! putting unnatural chemicals for my hair sucks also im definitely gonna use that earrings hack to decorate my hairstyles ✌

lzyshortiegal: Thanks for showing the process and tutorial! I'm glad we don't have to do our hairs like that modern days. I would never want to leave the house (not that I leave the house much anyways xD)

Xenobio: "This is human attempt against the second law of thermodynamics..." I feel you!

Deb Jordan: Great video!! Totally enjoy your videos. Husband and I watch a lot of Chinese costume dramas. It's about all we watch. Your hair is beautiful!

Celeste: I was born with black hair. Then I had thin blond hair. It became thick dark brown and curly hair and now I am going grey. Hair definitely changes. I am going to try this gel :) Thanks for the video!

Precious: More videos like this please i've always been curious about how ancient chinese lived.. but there are very little info on this in english.. love this video.. ❤

Ayu: Imagining that you have to go through all these hard work everytime you make video with ancient costume on, left me at awe. Keep up the good work!!!

GeGe Ai Ni: your hair looks so dark and shiny and healthy! I can only wish. the last time I had a good hair day was ages ago

J L: Love it! Next up a period drama Get Ready With Me for fashion too?

Carolina Dunn: You’re so interesting and funny, of course intelligent. I’m starting Make a wish after reading your review/recommendation. This segment about Chinese hair styling, well it needs thousands of patience. Good on you, I know you are serious on this but I can’t help myself giggle, no way I will try but interesting

DAYS LIFE WhateverIEncounter.: Actually #TheSwordandTheBrocade of Tan Songyun and Wallace Chung make me download an app to watch ….her outfit and accessories are really pretty….she so elegantly beautiful in traditional custom ❤️❤️❤️❤️

Keisha Bilberry: Really interesting seeing how this type of hair is done. It looked lovely when you finished!

Melinda Mucsi: This was fantastic! Thank you for making this video!

lemonadeporkchop: I like this casual form of video! Please do more of it

V44 ba: Best tips for styling hair is to make sure its "dirty" which means not washed that day and lots of product

Doctor Donna: I have had so long hair as well. I thing you could easily make the back bun much easier just with a Stick. Have you ever took a look into the longhair forum? There are lots of really good tutorials.

Nicole Green: Thanks for doing these videos. So much fun. Oh the wigs in period dramas gives some actors great eye lift - Yibo!! and they are great for reducing wrinkles!!!

Lilly Thai: The content I didn't know I needed

Ima: Oh wow thanks for the tips. I used to love doing my hair like any fave period drama.

Kathy xi: If I need to style my hair for something important, I usually don't wash my hair like three days before because my hair is too thin. I'm not really sure why but it really helps because your hair will become stiffer and there won't be as much baby hair.

Heike Stoll: Thank you, this was really cool. I’ve often wondered how they do the wigs for costume dramas. I’ve heard it can be bad for the actor’s hairline. Can you make a video about that? I can’t find any info.

Enitan H: Yes finally As someone who does her own hair every 2 weeks it's is an arm workout

Christopher Williams: Bao looks like a person with styled hair Hua looks like two friends and a comb! - I like your lessons I resubscribed cause I'm a sucker for languages!

Ni An 🇺🇦: Thanks for the video. I had never heard about the elm gel. So it was so interesting to learn about it.

Korean Convenience: I love that you're sharing a part of your culture. I learned something new about ancient hair styling gel. I really want to try it and see how it works on African American hair.

Scally Lee: Very interesting, along with the videos you do on national dress. Can I ask, have you done a video on etiquette and/or traditions with regards to bowing, greeting, hand positions etc. I know, or have read somewhere, there is a rule difference between women and men and some occasions mean they are reversed. I wonder if anyone has ever accidentally married their drama co-star according to ancient Chinese rules and didn't realise it.

Sherwood Smith: That waving style from the twenties and thirties was called "marcelled" It was made by hot curling tongs, which burned the hair over time.

Vi Zeta: This was great! More please !

KMA: bless you for going through all that to show us how it is done. Me, have supper curly hair so no hope to do any styling to it other than leave it loose or band it together.

#NoNewFriendsPlease: woah! but where would one buy this elm bark? lol i have so much hair that when i keep a short bob, i get an undercut to keep the shape smooth in the back. now during the pandemic, it's just a mop on my head. this was a fun video! no wonder why all those ladies needed help doing their hair in dramas lol.

M Ch T: When Avenuex makes hair tutorial, you sit and watch. Period.

Pointless: Your hair is so pretty, also glasses are my main problem for hairstyling and makeup as well

ヨスJoeySu: Kinda weird that I tried doing that hairstyle back in highschool hmm.. guess it's time to do it again lol

Carole McDonnell: oh this was wonderful! I was totally engrossed and enraptured. Thanks so much.

Jenny Luo: Loved this video! I need to find some 刨花. I have long hair too and it would be super interesting to use.

Barbara Frohberg: Thanks for sharing, I enjoyed watching this and learning about natural hair gel. I wonder how it would work on my very curly hair.

Meristars: I also have very soft hair and would need so much extra hair to help give me volume! Elm bark sounds a lot better than the animal suet/fat used in 18th century Western hair, less likely to attract bugs and rats!

Dagnė Eitutytė: This is very cool! I exactly needed something like that for my very unruly curly hair. Where could I buy it from China or Europe?

Ras Ras: Woah your hair is so pretty. So black, long and just so smooth

korming: I recommend using screw shaped pins, they are very secure

Elaine V: This is such a fun video! Thanks for sharing

Alexandra Taylor: I love your videos!! Where did you get slipper elm?? I've been looking everywhere cause it's apparently great for your hair! XD (oh nevermind I spoke before the end of the video! haha!)

BlueWhisperer: YESS!!! I've been hoping you'd do a video like this! :)))

Christopher Williams: Hua I can also see "it" under a comb... you drawings or characters are more like art then actuall language! *Sip's tea-chings!* thank you for this lesson! Aloha la, mingzhi dian ba,... "Remember ya, be wise!" *Sagely bows!*

Maureen Chung: Very informative will look for the elm bark to do finger wave style! What are those red paper the women in period dramas use as lip stain? Is it available today?

Siobhan O'Brien: You can buy slippery elm bark powder as a health supplement as well, might be easier to find.

Panda: You have beautiful hair! Thanks for the tutorial.

Mizuki101Ikuto: I wonder how much hair they used especially in Qing Dynasty for those rectangular hairs (when they’re not using those boards)

lilypilly206: Love these type of videos. Please make more like this rather than rant videos..

Lee Family: I've always wanted to know the wave hair from the opera if it was real or a wig. Thanks for sharing. Can I buy the bao hua from you? hehehehe

Nicole Hall: You do look ready for a drama.

saeideh kazemian: God watching your struggle was sooooo fun. but really it turned really good especially the back part. but all through the video, I was thinking how hard it must be to take them off. good luck

Josianne Morel: I woudl so love to try these hairstyles... but like you my hair is very soft and each strands is really really thin, plus i dont have much hair density either! like your whole front section is basicly my full set of hair! ROFL!

Sandra Low: What a fun segment!

betsey: I've not had my hair cut in a year ya gurl has plenty for this deal hahaha

kkaradin: so fun to watch! thank you!

lemon1980: What do they do without elastic band? It is probably the best invention for hair. Elastic band. Oh yes. Shampoo as well.

imogen: You are looking so pretty and your video is also very intresting and by the way every dynasty of China had a different styles of hairstyle, cloth fashion and all

Anna Püttner: "shit load of pins" thats me when i try to get my hair to stay in any updo... And then you have the *clink clink* with every step that tells you another stupid pin fell down and your haiordo is seconds from endin up as a birds nest^^

Alyssa G: This remind me of one of those indonesia traditional hair styling which use so many pins and when you take it off, it literally hurts af

Giuntronvo P: it is a beautiful tutorial <3 <3 <3 many thanks :">

lemon1980: Salt water can roughen up hair to create more friction. Yes. Doing hair couture needs a buddy or Y-tou to help u.

Rhonda C: its called hormones my hair was straight has a broad but when I turned 33 my hair became super curly I was alway flat chested but 2 my surprised I looked down and I had these big things sitting on my chest.

Hanna Ariel: There is a lot of work arms i see, forme who has weak arms im just gonna give up early on, I remember when i had my college graduation and we need to wear traditional clothes and so need to our hair do too, alot of hairspray and bobby pins and when it done i just wanted to cry cause how hard to undo all those pins and my hard hair frm tons of hairspray . Thanks for the tutorial AvenueX it's nice to know the process when we see those in drama.

waichin88: I wonder what they used to do without bobby pins. Are there ancient designs for bobby pins? lol

Ali: Loved it!!!

Emma_Lynn007: Beautiful ☺️. I wish I have long thick black hairs. Currently I’m loosing hairs and hope someone can give me any product or anything to help. I got tested positive about 2 months ago and now my hairs loss is so noticeable and seeing bald spot as well. I’m so sad and depressed- seem nothing helping.

V44 ba: Can you talk about the wigs they use?

Zhang Zhishan: Could you make a video about the different types of hanfu , and the name of the different layers?
