What'S up guys, it's Matt from TDM style here and welcome back to the channel now on this channel, we talk an awful lot about hair styling products and things that you're gon na be using on your hair once your base style is already in place, but as We all know finishing products can only do so much for you and if you don't have that style in place from the beginning, they aren't really gon na help. So much, and it has also been a minute since I've done a tutorial on this channel. So today, we're gon na be taking a look at some blow drying techniques that I've been using to smooth out my hair and create big weightless volume. Alright, now, if we forget about pre styling products and all of that stuff for just a minute, there are two main tools that we're gon na be using for this video today. The first thing you're gon na need is a thermal round brush. Now I have a 2.5 inch brush here, which is just about the right size for my length of hair. But if you've got shorter hair, you can get a smaller diameter brush and the main thing that you're gon na be using this for is to apply tension to the hair so that as you're drying, it you're gon na be smoothing that hair out, and it's also Going to help you to control the shape of your hair so that you can get it to lay where you want it and with the ceramic thermal core, this brush is actually going to heat up as you're blow-drying. It'S gon na hold that heat, which is gon na, make it a lot easier to get that hair, malleable and lock that style into place, and our second tool, of course, is the hair dryer, and the main thing I want to talk about today, guys is that We'Re using high heat, I feel like there is a major misconception out there in the men's hair community on YouTube. That, like you, should never use high heat because it's gon na break your hair off and it's gon na burn and whatever, and you have to use crazy heat, protectants and stuff and use low heat to dry your hair. I don't agree with that. If you have ever had your hair styled in a salon, they always use high heat and, while yes, usually they'll, use some products in there and things heat protectants are always nice. But the fact is that they're not totally necessary and unless you're holding that hair dryer in one spot for five minutes, you really have very little risk of day in your hair plus the high heat is what you're really going to need to get those hair molecules. Malleable, so you can get that style into shape, build that volume, because if you use cold air, it's really only good for smoothing out the hair and reducing some frizziness and that's actually going to give you a lower volume and a flatter laying hairstyle. So with that being said, I am going to use cold air at the very end just to close up the cuticle and lock the style into place. But for the majority of this tutorial we are using high heat alright. So with all that, out of the way, I'm gon na go ahead and wash my hair and then I'll be right back for this tutorial, alright guys so once you're ready with clean, damp hair, it's time to go in with any pre styling products that you decide To use I do recommend using something as a pre styler like 25 by the salon, guy or smoothing lotion by Moroccan oil or even like a mica, makes some really nice blow-drying sprays, and basically, what this is gon na do, for you is act as a detangler And anti frizz type of solution, and essentially it's just gon na make the whole styling process easier so that your hair comes out nice and smooth. Now, if you want to add some additional hold during the pre styling process, I recommend using something like a mousse. Just because that's gon na be the most lightweight option. That'S still going to add some hold. So today, I'm going in with a little bit of pre style by the salon guy and I'm just using really like a half a pump. I mean just the tiniest bit once you've got your pre seller in your hair. I do like to just go through quickly with a comb, to not only make sure that everything is evenly saturated, but also just to make sure that you've gotten through any last tangles or knots. Now it's time to switch on the blow-dryer, and the first thing that is super important here is to just use. Your fingers at first do not go in with the brush right away. Basically, you want to get your hair to the point where it's about 80 % dry before you go in with a styling brush, and this does a couple of things. If you try to use the brush right away and your hair is too wet any styling that you're doing is really just not going to hold. Your hair really needs to be almost totally dry in order for that heat and the styling brush to make those molecular bonds malleable so that they actually stay where you put them, and also technically, your hair is at its most fragile state when it's wet. So, if you're tugging and pulling at it with a brush that just makes you more prone to any possible damage. So I just like to go through with my fingers for a few minutes, and you can just kind of hold your hair up straight and blow-dry from the root to the tip as you're getting it dry and that will just help build in a little bit of Volume before you go in with the brush once everything is mostly dry now it's time to grab that round brush and start styling now. The key here is to work in small sections, so I like to push all of my hair in one direction. So I like to start at this kind of back corner. That'S my like one trouble area so at first I'll brush all my hair over to the right side. Just so, it's easier for me to get at that back corner and to actually see what I'm doing now, as you're styling with the brush. The main thing that is going to help you build in the volume is the angle at which you're holding your hair up from your head. Essentially, you want to follow the shape of your head and pull your hair up at least 90 degrees. So it's perpendicular with your head, or even a little bit beyond that. So you're, like you, know, pass to that 90 degree point so for those of us who are pushing our hair back. That means styling it basically straight up in the air and also even a little bit forward towards your forehead, so that when you push it backward, it's gon na have a lot of volume. So from here on out, I'm basically gon na take small sections of hair. The main thing is: if you take too much hair on that brush, it's just gon na take longer and longer to get there, so it's easier and it'll actually end up saving you time in the long run. If you do small sections at a time. So, as you take each section of hair, you just want to apply some tension by rotating that brush backward and just follow right. Along with the condenser nozzle of your blow-dryer - and I like to go slow here, because of course you can go faster if you're a little more experienced, but I find the slower that I go. The more smooth my hair becomes, and it just tends to hold its shape better now. I also want my hair to be going from the left or the right side a little bit. So when I get to this right side of my head, where I have some cowlicks and other things, I'm applying tension in doing the same technique, but I'm also moving the hair towards the direction that I want it to lay and mostly that just really helps me. Straighten out any kinky areas around those cowlicks, once everything is looking basically done, I do like to run through my hair with my fingers again just to basically check if there are any areas that are still damp or need any more work. Once I'm happy with the overall style now, I'm gon na switch to the cold air setting just that I can close up my cuticles and really lock that style into place, and if you have any areas that are still looking a little bit frizzy, you can grab Your round brush again and go over it a few more times with the cold air and that will just help to smooth everything out, even more alright guys. So now you can see my hair is just very light. It'S bouncy and it's got all this volume in here. So now is the perfect time to go in with your favorite post styler. Now, if you want to go with something, that's really light and it's gon na keep your hair just looking very movable and bouncy. But it's still gon na kind of lock that styling, you can actually just finish with just a hair spray um. Lately, I've been using this kms anti humidity seal, it's pretty decent, it's a little pricey, but it's okay or if you want to really lock that styling for the day I mean like I normally do. I go for a clay, so I'm gon na put in a little bit of clutch by the salon. Guy now, since I'm rocking this kind of asymmetrical undercut right now, I have been liking to kind of push everything over to one side a little bit. Instead of going straight back, so I think that's looking pretty good for me, so I'm just gon na finish it up, lock it in with a little hairspray. So there you go guys my blow-drying techniques for some high volume, hair styling. I really hope that you guys like this. I had a really good time making it it's been too long, since I've done a tutorial, so I hope that you enjoyed it. Please stay tuned to the channel. I'Ve got lots and lots more content coming up soon. TDM Style: Hey all! I've got an updated version of this tutorial for 2020 - check it out here: https://youtu.be/U7a-URSRh7I

TheSalonGuy: FINALLY! Hair tips from a non professional, that are actually professional level and correct! Thanks for using my products too Matt!!

Kai Porten: Great video! Maybe I can add something about the heat damage part: Structural damage to your hair (i.e. damage to keratin, a protein that your hair is made of) occurs only at at least 100 degrees celsius. At that temperature, you would typically remove the hair dryer because it hurts on your skin, so most non-masorchistic people should be fine! There's also "damage" by loss of moisture, which is why we use pre-stylers and nourishing products. Heat protectants usually try to protect you from this, not from the structural damage to your hair - which is mainly because a wax or oil _won't_ be able to protect your hair against structural damage, although many brands will tell you they can. This has to do with thermal conductivity, the oil/wax heats up and then damage is done anyway. So if a brand tells you there is a heat protectant in their product, it's usually to provide moisture and not to shield your hair from serious damage. There are some polymers that will be able to shield your hair a little against heat, but not too much, so high heat will always do its damage, no matter what you put in your hair before blow drying. But as I said, for most people, the high heat setting should be fine, because you'd hurt your skin anyway. Cheers!

Umberto Bianchi: I used to set my blow dryer at medium heat, now that I tried max heat ...definitely change everything for my hairstyle! I’m done with that technique now ! 100% recommended! Thank you

TraderPTY: Great video Matt. Really helped me. I think with your technique my hair responded a little better. Thank you. Keep doing more videos like these.

Molten Throne: Feel like I’m always late to you’re videos my fringe is about 7 inches and it tapers to the back, and I have super fine hair so achieving volume is a pain in the ass. But I’m definitely gonna try these techniques; especially for the Steve Harrington style(which is my favorite hair styling video you have ) Also are all the thermal brushes equal or do you have a personal favorite?

Nick Sibilla: Hey Matt, I'm new to your channel but you've got some killer reviews and some awesome tips. I'm currently growing my hair and am going for the Jax Teller slick back from Sons of Anarchy. I have the exact same hair type as you and wondered if you could do a product/tutorial review of how to achieve his style but with some volume on the top. Much appreciated man and great vids.

Riad Zoabi: Helpful, easy to understand just WOW ❤️

Andrew Elie: Thank you for an informative tutorial. Your explanations as to the reason why you do what you do, is especially good.

Tops Miah: Really good video. My hairdresser did all this. For a smooth finish my hairdresser used hairdryer a little after the clay and it looks good. Thank you for making and sharing.

Sakumos7en: Hey Matt. Great Tutorial! I  have one question. In your older video "5 Tips for Soft, Healthy Hair | Men's Hair 2016" you said that using high heat is bad and you have to use heat protection to get soft and healthy hair. You Blowdrying Tutorial says the opposite. I'm a little bit confused now. Keep making these great videos and I´m really curious about the next Tutorial :)

Sergio León: Finally what i was looking for! Amazing hair and pulling some hair!!

aaryaputra108: Probably the best video I've seen so far, well paced, with good explanation and demonstration

Mr Johnlazar: Finally i've got the guy who i'm lookin for , thanks for the work especially the hairdry tutorial i really love that kind of work Thanks again buddy keep it up <3

Jessie E: This video is amazing simply because unlike other stupid videos on styling hair this one actually teaches you how to do it on your own without the help of a stylist or barber lol... No one is going to go to a stylist every morning for free to get their hair styled. Well done on this tutorial I will be using it to style my hair from now on!!

Ale X: OMG I've been drying my hair the wrong way for years! :(

Vishfulthinking: I have never seen a hairstyling vid so ‘to the point’.. please keep this up... subscribed!

John Gomez: Thanks. I finaly made it. Smooth, silky and stylish hairstyle.

vasanth: Finally a video that i badly wanted. Amazing demonstration buddy. This is gonna save me a lot of time and worries in making my hair smooth and flowing. One question... Can we use any serum in place of a pre style product?

Owen Rackham: Good job man, I use this technique to achieve my side parted messy quiff style, I dig it alot!

Expensive Glasses Productions: You did a great job at this vid. While i knew everything you said already, this will certainly help other people. You've earned a new subscriber in me!

2 The Point: Watched the whole thing Couple Straight Male Q’s 1) What’s a hair dryer ? 2) What’s “hair product” 3) Can this process be condensed down to 15 seconds? 4) I wonder how many strips of bacon I could eat in the time it takes you to do your hair… Cheers brother, we’ll done

emraanzone145: Just watched your 1st video and I became a fan of yours Nice tips n tricks If you could make the video on Curley hair That would be good for me

Mr. Vega: great video, brother. My hair is the same length as yours except long all around. This will help for sure.

Sharat K: Hair colour looks so good.

Aryan: It's my first time watching your video , and yeah,.. it's been an unforgettable experience,.!!! You're amazing bruh !

Toni Kras: Your videos are great bro,i have one question, have you ever used Arcadian clay pomade,i have heard that is very good clay that go very easily on hair and that’s what i am looking for because all clays are so hard to distribute on hair, can you give me your suggestion?

LeiFlux07: Been trying to grow my "wig" (as I call it!) for years, I'm 35 and I'm talking about since at least 15/16. It is so thick and pretty wavy that I get so far, get pissed with it, and have it cut short and start over. As childish as it is I've been trying to grow my hair like Link from Zelda ever since Ocarina of Time released. I love the BoTW styling and am trying to grow it out again, following this and other videos here helps, but my hair is so thick it never wants to hold that well no matter what. I sort of have to straighten and style all in one pass, any further meddling to "cool lock" or "shape" etc just puts it out of whack. Really frustrating!

xeebot: Great tutorial!

VolcanCole: This dude stole part of the galaxy for his hair..

Shou Biao Kuang: Pretty good vid here. Am surprised to find some really useful tips. Highly recommended ...

Vince and his interests: I really love the colour of your hair, what do you ask your stylist to do for it? Would love to get highlights that colour in the future because it looks so great with your dark hair, which is the same hair colour I have.

Bhanu Neupane: You are great bro... Need more hair tips..

mahone Javv: Hi could you please advise on some hair wax/gel/cream that you recommend most. I find your video so good . We have almost same length of hair .I'm your new fan

Sergio Núñez: nice technique dude! I'm not sure if I ever have a hair style with that length and volume thought, my hair is thin so it gets messy so easily with just having medium length hair so I've never try hair styles with than kind of length and volume should I try l letting it growth longer and try it anyway?

Brad 0705: Hey Matt, I don’t mean to bother you again, but I’m looking into getting a round brush and I’m not sure what to get. My hair is around 4 and a half inches long. Maybe you could recommend what you are using in this video, or something else?

Conor Nadeau: Great video Matt! It is kinda funny that basically all you used for products are by the salon guy (nothing against him at all love his products that ive used). Again great video with important information.

Harshal Bhusare: Great video buddy.. *I have a question, plz answer it..* "If I use hair dryer on medium heat daily (without any pre- styler) for just 2-3 minutes, will it cause any damage to my scalp or hair"

Bat Of Gotham: Could u recommend me a good heat protector? I've already tried blow drying my hair with high heat but it looked damaged :/ I've got naturally thick hair which is also really dense, best wishes, love your hairstyle :)

Shade-E: Surprisingly you carry that hair colour well , such a bold colour

Manuel Austin: For me, I blow-dry correctly and I flat iron to get volume and looks high and looks good but as soon as I add the product and flattens out. What am I doing wrong?

Senator Armstrong: I want your hair. Please tell me where i can get hair that looks just as luscious as yoursssss. Great tutorial though! Watching this automatically got me thinking of getting a blowdryer. The way you used it in this video is in my opinion different from how other big name youtubers done it!

Abdallah Khaled: I just started blowdrying by myself and it's so hard for me man!

Alberto Bello: Gorgeous!

GTheGreat: Amazing video once again!

Jonathan Lopez: Love it!

The Bradenator: My issue with the round brush is that I can’t rotate it like you. If I move it up I pull my hair. Doesn’t budge. I think it grips too well. Any suggestions?

Jason: I totally disagree with you, it does not damage your hair really if you dont stay in one spot, but for some people it can dry your hair out even more, especially if your scalp doesn't produce much oil to begin with

Demonxspot: Well,my hair is just like yours in the beginning of the video but my is blue I will try your tip as soon as possible

Mohd Redzuan: Hi, i just wanted to know what is the material made for the comb? Is it plastic, metal or wood? Thanks in advance. I like ur video.

Carlos Araneda: I have so much trouble with my hair. When my hair is short, all fine, but as it starts to grow it becomes unmanageable: puffy hair, looks like I have a helmet on ahahaha. Any tutorial for this? What if I try brazilian keratine treatment? Thanks for your videos <3

Rahul Bolekar: Nyc tutorial

BigDudut: hi, i want to ask something. .what is the correct temperature of cool air from hair dryer? is it below room temperature or just normal room temperature? because i just bought panasonic EH-na65k and its blowing not enough cool air to me, its just like normal air from fan or like normal temperature room.

Jason Mark: Thx a lot, man! Will try it tmr

Im Estia: Love the hair color I hope you've filmed the process

Missaj imas: i really like it

Traveler’s Chronicle: I agree with that high heat thing with you bro

Harshit Jain: Can i achieve that without using styling products and i want to know what category your hair comes in because i think i have also same type anyways your videos are amazing

Alexander Carlson Lee: nice! subbed, and also do you do that every day cause that seems like a lot of work

Hazriq Azman: this video really help me

Fogozo: Nice video, im too lazy to go through this process though

pizza shit: Thanks for the video. And can we please know what type of blow dryer and brush is that

Gowtham: Thank you

KITTY CAT POW MEOW: THANK YOU!!!!!!! for using scientific terms.

thedepartedpie: If you had a limited budget and were choosing which product to buy first (get the second one at a later date), would you choose 25 spray or Clutch?

Brian Leister: Great tutorial! Where can we buy that brush???

Sanaulla Jamshed: Very helpfull

30fpsnoobCODYT: Does it work without a pre-styler?

deepak sharma: hey bro there is thining of hair on left side of head when i style my hair left side hair line looks some dull and right side hair line is normal...what to do to get thick hair on left side and maintain hair line

Aditya Akash anand: This method of drying hair takes too much time for atleast 15 to 20 minutes and also perfect tools and hair length so for my kind of person I will suggest any prestyling agent with a vented that will give better result in 5 minutes because time matters

tijan hassan: What type of a blow dryer are you using? (Name please) i need one for my frizzy spiral curly hair.

Sergio León: Which product can give you that texture and volumen ??
