The legendary the epic flip coat scrunch technique. Hey there guys welcome back to my channel. Today we are testing out the amazing flip coat scrunch technique originally created by the amazing, miss atoya bass. She is a hair stylist specializing in curly, hair she's been doing this for ever and she is the queen of simplicity and because she is so good at simple. She has created a very effective styling technique that works well for wavy, hair, all the way to coily hair. She uses this technique on all of her clients and i got ta say it looks bootamus every time i see it, so i thought for funsies. We would try it today and see how it goes now. You may be hearing me huff and puff a bit. I am very pregnant and i can't even like get up high enough to show you, but i cannot hang upside down and wash my hair like. I normally do normally. I just hang over my bathtub, it's the most convenient for me, but i can't necessarily do that right now. I can't spend 20 minutes hanging upside down. I used to could and now, as i can't the intriguing thing about flip coach french to me is that you shampoo and condition right side up and then you flip upside down. You flip you coat and you scrunch and it's a very fast application technique. Why style upside down well? For me, i do find that i personally get better curl enhancement all the way to the root when i style upside down. I also get better root volume, so this technique is intriguing to me. Since i can't hang upside down for long periods of time, i thought it would be fun to try now also to make sure i do this right. I thought it would be fun if we watched her video together first and then we did it together. Then y'all can double check that i'm like following this correctly. All right. Are you all ready? Yes, okay, so turned off my water. This is me in the shower. Okay, can you have me some gel yeah kind of shaking? You can totally hear that she's in her salon right now, i kind of love that she has those big absorbent mats, because she's doing this on all of her clients. That seems really smart coat. Okay, she kind of flipped everything to the side got some more gel. She'S coating, some more more coating, flip, more gel, and i happen to know that she really enjoys the diva curl gels. I think she's using archangel right now so i'll be using a really hard hold okay and she's scrunching. She grabbed a little more gel and is scrunching some more. This looks like my kind of routine. I love a routine with plenty of gel. She also has very very long hair, so i will be taking that into consideration. I won't necessarily be grabbing the same amount of gel that she grabbed because she has more hair than i do now. She'S gently kind of ringing out all the excess she did kind of a scrunching, pulsing technique and now she's doing like a firm scrunch, and i see a lot of water dripping out in between her fingers. That'S kind of setting and activating all of her waves and curls microfiber towel right there in kind of a scrunch blot situation. We call that a scrunch blot i'm going to call that a scrunch blot. Actually, that's a terrible name. I take that all back she's doing it micro flop, wow, look at how long and beautiful her hair is that's just amazing. Now the video was roughly two minutes long, but she wasn't even upside down for two whole minutes out of the shower. Okay, that's good! All! Right that looks pretty awesome all right that looked pretty simple and straightforward, so i will be using a pretty simple, straightforward line. I have used all of these products before so i know how they perform on my hair, i'm very excited to see how this technique works. I'M gon na wash and condition my hair and then i'll be back to slowly go through the application technique, which theoretically takes two minutes here we go, do do all right now. You could see that i did. Let'S move you down just a little bit so that when i flip over, you can see all the things i did a trickle rinse, which means i didn't like really rinse, all the conditioner out. I think i rinsed out about 70 of the conditioner in my hair, but i left a good chunk of it in. I did let it kind of hit my roots to make sure that there's not just a ton of conditioner in my roots, but there's lots of conditionery goodness in the lengths of my hair and because archangel gel is kind of a harder hold gel, i did grab The in shower style, fixer from curl smith, i'm a little nervous. Okay, i don't know why i'm fiddling! Why am i fiddling? I want to make sure when i flip it it flips. Okay, here we go we're going to flip. Can you see things? Am i still here: do i need to lower the camera? Maybe y'all should come down just a little bit more okay. She kind of shook her roots. I guess to get everything unstuck. I guess that's good, then. She grabbed like two pumps of gel, so i'm grabbing a decent glob here of the insurer style fixer and i'm just going to coat and then she coats the underneath coat coat. There'S still some gel on my hand, so i'm going to coat she kind of flipped the other way coat coat. I think i'm going to grab more when i go to scratch now. For me, i don't usually trickle rinse. I go ahead and rinse all my rinse out conditioner out and then i put back in a leave-in conditioner, which i get asked a lot if leave-in conditioner like if you need two separate conditioners, i i like using two but clearly atoya does not and her technique. Obviously works so there you go. I also really like spending a lot of time. Organizing my curl clumps, like i like to brush through my hair, get my hair to part. Maybe i'm maybe i'm doing too much work. Maybe i'm trying too hard because latoya's hair is stunning and all of her clients hair is stunning. I can't believe i've taken this long to try out this technique. Okay, she really does use a ton of gel. This is more gel than i normally use. I'M scared. Okay, everything kind of feels like it's got the right amount, let's see, and really this bending over isn't too bad. I think i'm taking longer than two minutes, but you know what i'm going to get just a little bit more for the front like a pee sized amount there there we go. Okay, that's good all right and then she kind of does a big scrunch, big scrunch. I might be over scrunching, i don't know, did she flip over on the other side and do a big scrunch? I don't remember wow. How have i already forgotten? I just watched the video okay. I do remember that next she grabs a microfiber towel. I don't have one just like hers, but i do have a towel so we're gon na use it it's a microfiber towel she scrunched and scrunched and scratched. Let me see if i can find a dry spot on the tail. I don't know if that's right, maybe she uses like the damp part of the towel to scrunch her hair the whole time, i'm not sure i'm trying. Okay, there we go scooch it back up all right, guys, y'all can see it. How does it look? I will diffuse my hair and come back to show y'all the final results and share my thoughts. First impressions on blip coat scrunch alrighty, i did diffuse my hair to the 90 dry mark wandered around my house. While it finished air drying. I tried really hard not to touch my hair too much while it was drying. I did kind of flip it, though, from side to side, so that this section would go ahead and dry. My hair is fully dry now. Let me show you what it's looking like before. I scrunch out the crunch gel, especially that in shower style, fixer that i used makes my hair look a little bit crunchy, so it will need a good scrunch and fluff, and i didn't notice latoya having i'm sure. If i had looked more on her instagram page, i would have been able to find like a diffusing techniques video, so i could have like followed her diffusing routine as well, but for today all we did is follow her styling technique and i kind of kept my Diffusing routine the same, you know diffused to 90 dry, let it finish air drying and then scrunch out the crunch. That kind of thing all righty. Let'S get everything fluffed there we go if you close one eye while you're fluffing, that's key. That really helps in case you were wondering all right. There we go here are the results with it scrunched out and fluffed. Let me know in the comments down below what y'all think: how does the flip coat scrunch compare to my normal styling routine with the in shower style fixer. Let me know in the comments down below. Thank you guys so so much for watching. I hope you found this video helpful, make sure to check out the links in the description, because i will have all of latoya's info down there. You won't be sorry if you go follow her. I will also have the original flip coat scrunch video linked there, so that you all can reference it in case you need a refresher and, as always, i hope you all are having an absolutely fantastic day can't breathe, and i will talk to y'all later. Bye do

Katie: I was already doing this technique cause I’m a busy full time working mom with a 1yo, 3yo, and 12yo! I barely get a chance to even shower and always at night! I use a foam and a gel! I like to do a quick wet plop while finishing my skincare (also keeps product off my face. I’m acne prone!) and brushing my teeth. Towel scrunch/dry to get the excess out. Then air dry while doing the rest of my evening self care (lotion, last minute picking up around the house or just before bed chores) Then I diffuse but leave the super hard cast to sleep on in a silk/satin bonnet. Scrunch the crunch and fluff in the morning!

Beata Sundvall: Yeayy!! A technique video!! Those are the absolutely most valuable for me, thank you! This is almost what I am trying to develope for myself! I am working on a shake-method! I have my hair FLOODED with water, then start swinging/flipping/shaking around with some force (almost headbanging 360°)! That messy tangle of stuck-to-head clumps after a single flip makes it impossible for my bob short hair to wave up properly! But the gentle swing-force in every direction keeps the clumps separated so they can fall in place for air-drying after I have got the gel in! This method works in my head, but I havn't actually got it to work really really good yet, but I'm working on it! It's an idea! I hope we can see more experimental technique videos in the future! Thank you again, merry christmas!

QuickSilverHair: I love Atoya. I love the simplicity that she teaches. And if I remember correctly she does just diffuse without much fuss. Your results are fantastic!!!

rbp 62: Your hair looks great after you fluffed and you’re going to need a quick routine when the new bambina comes!

Sara Marie: This styling routine looks right up my alley! After having super short hair most of my life, adjusting to long wavy/curly hair has been a learning curve that takes such a looonngg time! This one routine will cut some time. Now to just figure out how to deal with the mass amount of detangling and shedding (I wash once a week) that happens. I think that takes up the most time!

Brandi Zapata: I’ve actually been doing this technique since I was a teenager. I’m 40 now. But, I let my hair air dry until about 85 90% and then I go in with my diffuser and scrunch out the crunch while drying the rest of the way. Honestly, I don’t think your hair can ever have a bay day. It’s so beautiful and shiny.

Marjorie Ibarra: I love Atoya! Flip coat scrunch works best when you start with her hydration method on the hair. It has to do with how you apply conditioner, detangle and rinse to keep the hair hydrated without weighing it down with too much heavy conditioners! One of my hair goals is to someday have an Atoya haircut. Her default is the Ultra Defining Gel from Diva curl, which is tried with her technique and works great!

hansenshandmadehandsome: After being diagnosed with POTS a year ago I had to adapt my upside down wash and style to this same type of style method. I have found it helps to wash out my condioner upside down (or get the leave in placed) then do a quick plop while I get dressed and get my compression stockings on, then go straight into the gel with this same flip application process. I only diffuse my roots when I do diffuse though. That's just a personal preference for me because my arms being up for too long also makes me dizzy Never knew it had a name!

sarah95958: I've spent the past three years watching countless people's advice on how to achieve curls....wish I'd known about this instead! Perfect curls today even though hair has been thoroughly wrecked by a curl specialist who put masses of short layers in for added texture Thank you so much for showing us this technique, so simple with only a couple of products too. ❤

kryki_cha: Just tried this and love it! So fast and great “everyday” results. I don’t think I used enough gel this time, so I’m sure next time will look even better!

Emily Cecire: Kudos to you for keeping up curly life with a little and another on the way!! I agree that Atoya is AMAZING and love that you covered this!! Along with being a curly hair expert, I also love that she is all about helping her clients embrace THEIR curls as they are. So good I believe she also offers a course…. I haven’t tried it but would be so infested to hear your thoughts… maybe a future video!?

Faith: Love your T-shirt - I have one very similar :), and I'll definitely be testing Flip Coat Scrunch tomorrow! It looks super easy and lovely results! Slightly less volume than when you style it upside down, but I think you have good curl definition this way!

Cindy Sumner: I like the root volume you got with this technique. I think your hair turned out just as beautiful as it always does. I own those products so I will be doing this routine in the morning. Thank you for bringing this to light for me. Ok, tried it this morning and I'm officially making this my wash day routine. So fast and such great results.

Lydia Thornton: Love this method on you, Courtney!! Amazing that such a quick, easy method produces such great results!!

Elizabeth Moore: It’s always amazing how much better it looks after scrunching out the crunch - looks great! Thanks for the video!

Nina Crutchfield: Thank you for posting this. So many curly routines are so complicated these days! I’ve been really needing to go back to basics and this is it! Did it today and got such great results!!

P Weber: Hi Courtney- I'm curious how second day hair looked using this technique. I'm always searching for a styler and/or techniques that will still look acceptable on days 2 and 3! Thanks for all of your great info!

Fabiola Nair: Hi Courtney! I normally don’t write on YouTube but just wanted yo say that loved the video and I’m a type 3 curly girl with thick hair and medium to high density; I used to wash my hair upside down as well but being like that too long can really hurt my neck and I started to change it up with upright styling but the results weren’t my fav so I do this very method of washing, conditioning my hair upright and then I style upside down. Is so much quicker and less stressful to the body. Have a merry Christmas and Happy new year

Jacky Moffat: Video was great, thank you for sharing Cortney. Your hair always looks stunning whatever you do xxx

Christina Camonayan: Definitely excited to try this out on my next wash day! Your hair looks great. I’d say the curls are a little smaller with this method, but still and amazing different look.

M Farley: This is how I normally do my hair. I can't wash upside down, I tried and oh the tangles! LOL. But I always style upside down. Love your videos! Your eyes look so pretty in this one! (always do, but even brighter today). Thanks for the videos! Merry Christmas!

Carmen O: This is very similar to the routine that I have been doing for awhile now. I think you got great results!

Christina Cornelius: I think you had great results from Atoya's technique. Both results from both techniques are good also. But there's just something about the flip, coat, scrunch results that are a tad better to me. I'm always surprised when using that technique how good my hair comes out. Like you, I prefer brushing through etc. So it feels like I haven't done enough to achieve that good of results, I guess. Need to embrace the simplicity!

Wincie Doffing: I would just like to say I love your Christmas music choice for the background of this video. And I didn't know what this method was called, but I do it all the time and love how easy and well it works

Krys Elizabeth: This is how I do it also…way less time…curls just as good

Lu G: I follow Atoya on IG, but I somehow missed her _flip, coat, scrunch_ demo! Your hair looks amazing (I mean...when does it NOT?!) and I'm going to try this technique tomorrow! Thank you for sharing. ❤️

sarah95958: The best routine for my hair by far. Thank you so much for sharing this and introducing me to Atoya Bass

Janja Pančur: Beautiful results I do this technique quite a lot:)

Derinda Lucken: Your hair looks wonderful! Can't wait to try this technique!

Radiant Style: I like the root volume you got from this technique and your hair is always beautiful

Dee Silver: I’m definitely trying this. I love quick and volume technique

Melanie B: This is my kinda routine! Im a lazy wavy. Loved your results too! Thank you for sharing

Lori Weiler: I'm not sure what is so amazing about this technique...I've been doing this for years. Your hair looks beautiful, but it always does!

Cindy Holman: I use all those products and love them! My hair is shorter so it doesn't take as long - but my hair is curlier so these products always work for me too!

luckyDancer100: The fact that you’re able to do this while pregnant is pretty incredible. I’m not expecting, but I’m so much lazier than this haha. I just wash, condition and towel dry. The waves come either way.

KCG 123: Love this! I love seeing you try different styling/diffusing methods!

Cortney Short: Atoya is a genius, and she’s such a force for good in this world. Embracing the curls you have and taking joy in your hair and routine is a big part of what she focuses on, so a quick and effective FlipCoatScrunch is simple and brings out the best in your hair! She helped me learn to love my curls!

Bexwizard0142: Great video, as always, thanks Courtney. Can I ask, do you brush your hair at all during this process, before washing or after conditioning? Thanks x

Raquel U: Interesting, this is very similar to what I do most wash days! I do like to define my part line with a brush though, otherwise my parting goes crazy.

Angie M: Easy and looks great! I will try this next wash day!

Melissa Sell: This is the technique I’ve been using. Didn’t know it had been coined!

Chere Rush: I am going to try this. My hair is always so frizzy. I want my curls to look soft and smooth like yours. . Thanks for the video

Jessica Duffy: I'm loving your hair in this video. I have 2b-c, fine, thick, medium porosity hair. I just tried NYM Curl Activating Mousse with some Jessicurl Rockin' Ringlets and the Spiralicious all on soaking wer hair and my results were great! Which is stronger the Jessicurl or the Curlsmith in-shower styler?

Patty DeCosta: I’m definitely going to try this! I feel like you and I also feel like I’m trying too hard with my hair routine.

KatyandJoemac: This looks good! It is very similar to something I do when I get the best results. I got it from the Cort Report which is one of the first CGM vidoes I watched and it gives me the best results. However there is a lot of gel involved and my crunch doesn't scrunch out to soft like everyone else's but I get good curl definition.

Barb S: Hi Courtney, I think the flip, coat, scrunch looked softer. They are both beautiful.

Katinka Dosztály: Your hair looks really great! :) I will definitely try this one.

Jackie Forbes: I am definitely trying this technique today. Your hair looks great

Angela G: Lovely as always. I had to move to an upright more damp styling due to back issues. I might be able to manage this. I will give it a try.

FANNY CASTRO: Your hair is so healthy and beautiful. I love your soft waves.

Christina Clos: Why am I turning my head with you each time you flip from one side to the other? Courtney you look fabulous. Your skin is glowing

D Ebner: I thought your hair looked very nice. I'll have to give that method a try. I love simple. Thx Courtney! May the Lord Jesus continue to bless you & your family! I tried & live this routine. I still like part of your normal routine, buy taking the hair off the back of my head, and using the wet brush, brushing before applying the gel, especially the front, ensuring a part and really forming big clumps.

ybell1294: Huh! I think I accidentally stumbled into that style of gel application on my own time. I'm on the curlier side of textures, so going straight in with scrunching got me nowhere fast lol. I do prefer doing application in four sections just for thoroughness. Otherwise, basically the same procedure. Neat!

Andrea Murphy: Interesting, I just learned the name of the technique I do! I prefer to wash at night and style in the morning so essentially this is what I do other than only using a whole lot of gel.

C S: You are my hair goals, your hair is so shiny! Hmm, maybe I'm not using enough gel and that's my problem? (I thought before I was using too much). My hair is straight on the top half, then the bottom half naturally curls into ringlets on its own. After I do all the things I'm supposed to, the second I scrunch out the gel cast, the top of my hair immediately falls flat again and looks like I haven't just spent hours doing my hair.

Fran Garcia Beauty: You didn’t share your thoughts! I like it. Looks beautiful and much simpler

Michelle Price: Love the results!

VibrantlyAmi Art: I’ve been doing this lately… didn’t know it had a name. I like it!

Ellen G: This technique definitely worked well for you. Love the results IMHO they are equivalent to your former routine.

Krista: I pretty much only flipcoatscrunch these days. I’ve found that the approach is best for my wavy hair!

Rebecca Jones: I've been using this hair technique since I was in college I'm now ,54 but I don't use the air dryer either. It totally air dries

Lorie Nickason: I think your hair looks fabulous! I will try!

Karen Delgado: Your hair looks great! I love atoya!

Bonnie McKee: It looks awesome!

Michelle Koekemoer: I think your normal style looks better. But it's so nice to have a more simple routine that still makes your hair look good. Especially when your pregnant

Traci Wheeler: Going to try this next wash!

Caloci76: This is pretty much what I have been doing since I started. I definitely need to refine it a bit though because I’m still not getting the results I want. When in this process did you brush your hair?

Cassie Kizis: You’re so adorable and this video was so helpful!

K Sloan: Your hair looks so firm and bouncy even when it’s wet!! Mine is floppy. I think I need some protein

Sarah C: I’ve always done it this way…doesn’t really seem like a special technique. But still, happy to see your video!

Hal Bryant: Loving your videos! How are you diffusing these days since I know you were extremely bent over in your old diffusing video. I am doing some upright styling but can't figure out drying my hair upright. Merry Christmas!

Krystal Neeley: I got great results with this using the in shower style fixer. I just didn’t get the longevity. I wonder if it is too heavy for my fine, low density hair?

Faye Berman: Oooh, I might be able to hang upside down for 2 minutes! Thanks for this timely video, since I’m about to get in the shower

suvonne dunning: It looks great!

Jenn Leah: My hair would be a tangled mess if I didn't at least run a brush through it before applying gel. I tried once and holy yikes I had rat's nests everywhere. Luckily my hair was still wet so I brushed it out & then did my usual glaze and scrunch I almost always do .. but AFTER brushing lol.

Star 123: Your results looked great!

Elizabeth Thomas: OK my daughter momma to be fav Youtuber! I was thinking about you in the shower the other day (geez, only curly girls think these sentences) and a video request: you seem to be great at feeling the texture of your hair to know products/coverage. Can you think about household items that mimic various textures, so we can better learn what you feel? Some say is seaweed, but I'm a midwestern girl who hates the dirty sand filled with those things, so it's a terribly useless thing for me! haha I can say that I can feel my hair is ridiculously soft, like the softest cat fur.... when wet in the shower. I just have zero clue if that is a good thing? Bad thing? if that should indicate more protein vs moisture products? Or is it none of the above- everyone has super soft hair in that scenario.

Dre Hernandez: Do you know if Devacurl products are safe to use again? I used to really love their gel!

KathleenKC1: I can't say there is a big difference on your hair. But I think I will give it a try. Thanks.

Briena Rivera: Ooo also I have a request! Maybe at one point you could do a one brand wash day using the rebranded/repackaged miribel naturals!

Killer Crow: I tried this method a while back and legit hated it. It tangled my fine hair so bad, I absolutely have to style soaking wet, bowl method style. I just do a modified bowl method

Tatum Reed: I love your channel and your videos!

somewherenorth: I saw this title and said "What?!?" I tried getting in with Atoya for so long but never managed to snag a spot. Eta: I'm still mid video so you may have figured it out eventually, but her favorite is the Ultra Defining Gel.

Isabella Valencia: I have perfectly straight hair but I loved watching your video anyway. Do you ever straighten your hair? Are you a redhead? Sorry so many questions Im just so curious...thankyou in advance

Shannon Gay: CONGRATULATIONS ON THE LITTLE ONE!!

Emily Robinson: What is the difference between “coating” and using praying hands? Or are they essentially the same?

karla nichols: I love bioterra gel. I think it’s better than deva curl gel. I’m low maintenance like this. I do it all upside down.

Alpha Lily: I love your hair! And your shirt!

Leandra Gustum: I dont know why, but even when my hair is slippery, wet, and totally tangle free it tangles as soon as i flip my head upside down

shawtazz: So will the pump 2 in 1 define and repair cream not work on its own like this, am I supposed to be using a gel? Is the 2 in 1 cream a leave in conditioner lol? I have tried this technique though after seeing your last one over the tub and it worked a lot better for me when applying product right after a shower which I hadn’t tried. I found that my hair should be very damp when I apply this pump cream (I even tried spraying some day 2 right away). But should I try shampoo conditioner and then a gel? Any gel recommendation :)? Thank you for your channel

Sassy Cats Lacquer: I'm curious do you prefer this method vs your usual?

Rebecca Trono: Can someone please tell me what a "drizzle rinse" is? I've been scouring Insta and YouTube and cannot find an explanation!

M. P.: I love the dark blonde colour of your hair, you lucky girl.

Kellie Francis: Do you do this technique every day?

Karen Monroe: Not sure how this will work on thick, dense hair. I always brush products through. Can’t hurt to try!

susan watts: I’m trying!

onemoregarden: I thought you said in a past video that we should not use a regular conditioner as a leave in because the pH is bad for our hair?

Ashley Baker: Anyone know where her swim suite is from?

Rachelle P: Happy Holidays Courtney and family

Jennifer Dunstan: Unrelated to hair, but I really enjoyed the relaxing piano music! What was that song? I'd love to play it myself!
