My name is Lucy, I'm a Dutchwoman here to offer an alternative approach to beauty.

On this channel I do mostly hair tutorials where I show you how to braid, pin and style your own hair. I recreate hairstyles from movies, tv shows or history and I regularly come up with my own, which I love to share with you!

I really enjoy diving into history to find out how women went about their beauty and dressing rituals in days past. Vintage and history-themed videos are my little passion project.

You'll find a bit of lifestyle content here as well, ranging from cozy chats over a cup of tea (my beloved Tea Time videos) to personal vlogs and home & interior videos.

Enjoy browsing!

Hey guys welcome to a new video. Today we are going to talk about braid waves and, more specifically, braid waves for people with thinner hair. So when i say braid waves, i mean braiding your hair for a longer period of time with the intention of getting waves. In the end, this is a very beloved heatless or overnight curling technique for people with very long and thick hair, because it gives them absolutely beautiful ways that are really easy to do. It'S a very easy method to sleep in it's good for the hair. Unless you have thin hair, if you've ever tried breakaways on thin hair, you know it's not that good of a look on me when i do it. What happens is that i have pretty nice ways, admittedly through here. Everything underneath here is just kinks, which gets smaller and smaller and smaller until it's just frizz at the lower part and then stick straight ends underneath that. But there is a way to make it work, and i'm going to share that with you today and all we are going to need, for that is just a scarf, and this is going to help bulk out the braid make it actually provide the shape and fullness That you need to get these waves. I have a scarf here. That is a little bit longer than my hair. If you have something that is about the same length as your hair you'll be absolutely fine. This is a square scarf, so i'm just going to fold it so that it's as long as possible, i'm going to take one of the points and i'm just going to bobby, pin this to the front of my head so that it holds and now i'm going To french braid my hair, and as i'm doing that, i'm going to treat the scarf as my third strand. So basically, what i'm going to do for starters here is to create two sections on both sides of my head. I'M going to braid with the scarf as well and we are going to do a french braid, because i do like my waves all over my head and not just on my ends. So, as i'm doing a french braid, i am not going to be adding any hair to the scar, so i'm just going to braid that straight away, but on the other end here i am going to add a little bit of extra hair like i would for A normal french braid pull it over and on this side i also have hair on the outside, so i'm gon na add some more to that and braid it now on this end again, there's just the scarf, so i'm just going to braid that but add a Little bit of hair to this section and a little bit of hair to this one, and i'm just going to go all the way down my hair in this way, when i've added all the hair, i'm just going to finish this braid all the way down a Normal simple braid still using the scarf as my third strand, i'm going to finish it as far down as i can so until i completely run out of hair, and you really want to go as far down as you possibly can in order to avoid getting those Stick straight ends at the end of your waves. So when i have reached the bottom of my hair, i'm going to take a little hair elastic and tie this all off, and that is it. There is your french braid that you can use to wave your hair. Now, since i have a little bit of scarf left still, i sometimes like to just take this and tie it on top here, so that my hairstyle is a little bit more compact. I'M going to sleep with this in tonight and tomorrow morning, i'll come back and show you the results. So you can see. You know how the waves look, but i did just want to show you an alternative way to do this. If your hair is even thinner than mine, because um there's definitely something you can do for that as well and it'll still come out looking nice, but instead of using the scarf as one of your three strands. We'Re gon na use the scarf as two of the three strands and just use all of your hair as the third strand. So for that technique i am going to put the center of the scarf here on the front of my head. You can just bobby pin it down, make sure it's secured. Then i'm going to take my hair. Both sides i'm going to join these two sides together in the back, to create one section and then i'm gon na start braiding that with the other two and since now, we only have one strand, i'm only going to be adding hair every time. That is on the outside, and here is my braid with two strands of scarf and one strand of hair. So i will see you guys tomorrow morning with the results good morning. Here is what my hair looks like the next day. It has slipped out a little bit over on here, um, but other than that i feel like the braid is still in, which is good. So let's take a look at the results and the curls that i got or waves. Rather here we go braid waves. Let me just come up a little bit higher, so you can see my ends and i'm going to show you from the back. I did apply some setting lotion to my hair yesterday night, just the same one, that i always used a lot of body mixed with some water spritzed down to my hair, and then i braided it with the scarf, and this is the result, some really nice summery Peach waves, i feel like this - is a very kind of you know: messy beachy look and here's what it looks like with a tiny bit of styling, so that is it guys. That is how you can do braid waves on thinner hair. So i really hope you enjoyed this little tutorial and found it helpful if you did don't forget to give it a thumbs up and subscribe to my channel for loads, mercury and lifestyle content. There is another video here that i think you might also enjoy. You can go watch next, thank you for watching and i'll see you very soon in my next video bye,

Lena the Alien: Not gonna lie, the scarf braid is a look on it's own

Rachel E: My arms would have given up after two braid parts. Very impressive. The scarf looks great as a hair style

DamiV: After trying many braid curling methods I've found that two strand rope braids (instead of the basic three strand braid) give the most beautiful curl. At least to my somewhat thin but really long hair.

LacrimaPhoenix: After the first braid stitch, you can fold the little top part from the scarf over and braid it in with the longer piece. That way, you can release the bobby pin^^

Abbiekakez: I was LITERALLY just trying to figure out how to do braided heatless waves with fine/thin hair and then this video appeared! Definitely trying this!!

Hevynly1: Great tip! You can get even more of those beachy waves if you do a French braid on either side of your head too! Always looks cute in the summer!

Piyu Sarkar: This looks very natural, and I can say that because my natural wave is almost exactly like that, just a tiny bit more frizzy

G L: Thank you so much for showing tips for fine/thin hair. It would be really cool if you'd do a video on hairstyles with all kinds of hair clips for long hair. I really want to use them but they always slip out of my hair and none of the other youtube videos have helped :(

Just an old Snufkin: This looks very interesting! Thank you for showing this to us, i'll definitely will try this out ❤. I always struggled with doing braid waves on my thin hair so maybr this will help out

Jordan: Thank you for this amazing technique/trick. I did it last night and it came out so beautiful

Julia R.: This is a great idea! I have thin hair, and I personally do two Dutch braids on wet hair and then sleep in it, gives great results! Awesome video!!

Mealmoth: This is SUCH a great tip!

Serena Sonnenberg: Your hair tutorials are always the ones I find myself coming back to using the most, and I really appreciate what you do! Looking forward to trying this one tonight!

Tammy Masson: This was genius!!! I think I would cover everything up with another silk scarf to help hold things in place overnight. Super ideas! Thank you! I'll be sharing this video for sure!

Dee S: Thank you. Definitely helpful. Another one here with long but thin hair. Love vintage styles but just don’t have the bulk necessary. All these tips are very welcome.

Mirjan Bouma: As a fellow thin hair owner, your tips help me do much!

Ivana Rodríguez: I will definitely try this! I also do two separated braids

ThisIsNotMyName: Thank you, this is such a good idea! The braids never worked for me.. I will try this tonight

Lakshita Sharma: I tried the first one and it came out pretty AMAZING. I Would definitely recommend it. Plus it compensated for my arms workout

Marcella Miranda: Thank you sooo much for this video!! I absolutely love it ✨

JennaBethBeauty: If you did it with wet hair, straight after washing, it would probably hold even better! Great tip ❤ My sister would love this. We do braid waves all the time but my hair is a bit thicker than hers.

Colleen Marble: Oooh this is great. My hair has gotten very long over the pandemic and I've started braiding it at night so it doesn't wake me up when I toss and turn (it was pulling under my shoulders and such). But the braid leaves it kinky, as you said. My hair is a little thinner than yours and very, very straight unless I curl it, but I try to avoid using heat every day, and I only wash every three days. So lately I've just been wearing it up. I am so excited to try this as a way to have waves without a curling iron, since I can't sleep well with rollers.

Melissa McCauley: Can you try a French rope braid? I think I might try it tonight. My hair is EXACTLY like yours and it’s always frizzy after braiding

Ashley Guthrie: Have you ever tried the twist braids for waves? It's a really nice look with less kinks.

liz not slow: I have a new way of dealing with split ends during quarantine. It sounds quite neurotic, but it's actually not too difficult. I've been cutting them off one by one! I started just going through my hair and clipping off the worst offenders. If you clip off 100 a day (easy to do while watching something for a half hour) then that's 700 a week! Not at all a "hair cut" but definitely will be part of my hair routine forever now, because my hair feels so much healthier. Pros: You can keep your hair long, and at the same time get rid of split ends, because you're only clipping off the bad ends, and leaving the good ones. Something to keep your hands busy while watching TV. Definitely my ends feel soooo much smoother. Which is impressive because I haven't had a haircut for a year now. Cons Takes a long time. Like, many hours, but also many many days. Not good for instant gratification. You need good vision. Probably only works if your hair has reached that long point where you don't have a "style" or layers to preserve - but at the same time, you're removing so little of the hair, it probably would work with layers? Another benefit is that I feel like I know my hair so much better now. I can spot these little white marks, where I know the hair is bent, and will eventually snap off, and then the end will be frayed and start to split up the hair. So I cut above that white mark. Anyway, maybe this is crazy and no one else will do it. But if you like to keep your hands busy while relaxing on the couch, I find it quite satisfying, and I think it will be part of my hair maintenance forever now!

Charlotte Mulligan: Hey girl this is so cute! Just a question - I know you mentioned in previous videos (from a year or two ago) that you had been struggling for a while with diffuse hair loss. Your hair looks so beautiful and full these days, especially at the crown, and I was wondering what's been going on with your hair fall? I've been struggling with my own hair loss issues for about two years now and am beginning to be at a total loss. If something helped you (or anyone), I'd love to know. Thanks!!

spacecase0: Absolutely fantastic idea, thank you

Brooke Burge: Thank you, I needed a video for thin hair!

meepsie14: Braid wave twins! I did this last night and now have it styled half up half down. I love braid waves but mine always end up being frizzy which is annoying. Any tips to stop the frizz?

Jennifer Grove: I am slowly but surely getting better at french braiding thanks to your channel. :)

Nidhi Vaidya: I watched this video with such interest then remember I have... naturally wavy hair

Lacey B: I always watch her hair tutorials even though we don’t have anywhere near the same hair type. My hair is curlier than this naturally lol.

K.R. Sexton: I have a confession to make... I've never learned how to do a french braid. Super interested in this though, so I may have to try! My thin hair so wants to be wavy.

Strawberry 1: Thank you! Always delighted to have new ways to curl my very thin frizzy hair. Have been doing a version of your sock braid for months now. :D

Linda Way: Love it! ❤️Thanks❤️

Rajini Gupta: You can have the single French braid as a go to hair do. And the next day you can go out with yourwaves. A win win situation . By the way you very pretty

Mildred Cady: I am so trying this tonight. I’m also trying to grow my hair longer… but it’s taking forever.

Sara Jorge: Hi Lucy! Do you find that your hair is properly dry in the morning from the setting lotion? I tried the sock method you showed on that other video and by the morning I had no curls and I think it was because my hair didn't dry out properly. Do you apply juts enough lotion to coat the hair or does it get proper damp?

Crowned Lily: Still watched despite having naturally wavy thick hair.

dr. K: I was trying braid waves just last night and failed❣️❣️❣️ thankyouuuuuuuuu

Kendall’s Podcast: Her talent

Brandie Jae Vaughn: I wear my hair in braids every night to keep my hair from tangling, and I wake up with nice waves but they only last for 5 mins before going flat. I have thin/fine straight but very silky/slippery hair. Never holds a curl and it’s so annoying! I hate hairspray and hair gel as I like to be able to run my fingers through my hair and hate the feeling of “crunchy, stiff” hair. So I just have to deal with having my hair in a straight hairstyle forever. Which is fine I guess, just wish I could have some curls/waves in my hair every once in a while.

Jacquie O'Shea: I have thick straight hair but my hair doesn't always hold curl very well ❤❤❤

Rebecca Marilyn: Did you just use a small clear elastic to tie the end? Need to try this :)

SpazyAzy's Art: I love it!

Pirate lassy: Thanks, I'm gonna try this

Isabella Pattinson: I don't have thin hair but I am still watching. I find your videos to be very calming anyways so I don't need a reason to watch any of your videos.

Saad Aeman: Good idea, wonderful and easy, thank you and regards your sister from Iraq

Anna: I NEEDED THIS. THANK YOU ahaha

MadeByAmy21: I have thick hair so i have to devidr it in two braids but I also like to add a piece of fabric for mode difined waves

Andiitzy Sternenlicht.: I make the braids, I have thick hair but I have layers so I make it loose the Last part and use two elastics, one for the top and another to the bottom.

Anna Baranyi: The real question is, HOW DO YOU MAKE THEM WORK ON THICK HAIR WITHOUT IT GETTING FRIZZY!?
