Hi, hey, hello.... insecurities (lol)

Today we are chatting about something I never thought I would talk about on YouTube. I know this may sound DRAMATIC (caps for drama) but hey, we all have insecurities and mine is my thin hair. I have learned how to care for these strands of protein and I wanted to share some tips with you!

I am a huge fan of my hair when I have extensions to liven it up but I think it's important to love the natural state of our being as well. During the pandemic I have been forced to embrace the natural state of my hair and you know what -- I'm getting quite used to it! And in fact, dare I say, starting to like it?!

Let's chat all things thin hair and how to best manage it's care!

Let me know in the comments below the products you use or the techniques you find helpful for thin hair. I will also post up some of the items I mentioned in the video below.

Love you all and wishing you endless years of good hair days.

Just looking at it now, you know it's like the first thing that you look at when you are trying to figure out how to film a video, hey everyone and welcome back to my channel. This is a video i did not anticipate to film. This is a video that i think i relate to more than any other video on youtube and it is having thin hair, thin, limp lifeless, hair and how to deal with that on a daily basis and as well how to take care of it. This video, i didn't plan on filming and it's because it is one of my biggest pain bodies and insecurities that i have ever had. I am that person. I have always been that person that constantly changes my hair every single day. I am constantly brushing my hair. Every single day, because i'm so aware that it is thin now it's just a part of my genetics. Now i'm also someone who has gotten hair extensions before and i get them because they really fill out my hair, give it body, give it the ability to curl and hold that curl to the next day, because if you have thin hair, you know okay, every single Day i need to wash my hair because it gets greasy or it looks greasy or it looks limp and lifeless. Maybe this was before you even started, diving into the world of dry shampoo or anything like that. But what i want you to know is: there is some light at the end of the tunnel and if we take care of our thin hair well, we might actually begin to not mind it as much or not notice it as much at the beginning of quarantine. When i had my extensions - and i obviously had to take them out so this was one of the days i was dreading so much and personally it felt like a part of my identity was being taken away because i felt so much more comfortable having thick hair. Now i'm sure you can relate to that if you've ever tried, clip-ins or anything like that, you get into this mode, where you literally can't feel yourself or live without them, because it's just who you want to be it's how you want your body to look. I can completely relate to that not saying that getting highlights or going to the salon or getting extensions is bad, but it's got to come from a place of wanting to do that because you are embracing your natural beauty. You are doing this because you know it makes you feel good and it makes you feel more like yourself versus trying to fit into a mold, so that people will like your photos, and i can also identify the fact that that was a huge insecurity that i Really needed to tackle - and i didn't want to so i continued to avoid income global pandemic by sweet, instagram, maine and internal validation that i am enough. This was a moment where i had to take them out. It was awful. I was crying. I was not happy, but you know what my hair actually under them was getting healthier and healthier, because i was using less heat and now with my natural hair color coming in. If you are also someone who is thin haired and has blonde hair and continues to highlight, you will note that probably your hair is feeling pretty stringy during the day and even if you're, not blond-haired, you probably have one of the biggest grievances that your hair feels Stringy, throughout the day, you feel like you constantly need to brush it and just brushing it continues to take more hair out what the heck. So the first thing is easy: does it? Okay, because you know what thin hair is so prone to damage, so there are so many things we have to keep in mind when we are taking care of our hair. So the first thing: i'd love for you to get a wide tooth comb and to never brush your hair with a thin tooth comb. If you have a brush like this with very flexible bristles - and you can see it's just it's not necessarily tearing through my hair. Now keep in mind, i did just brush my hair, it's just gently running through it. That is one thing to keep in mind and as well. If i hadn't had just brushed my hair the way i would have brushed my hair just there is, i would have held on to it pretty tight here and then i would have just gently combed through the bottom and then started working back up to the roots. If you are someone who just wants to get in there and rip all those tangles out, you're, probably creating a lot of damage, so maybe be a little bit more mindful. I remember i was doing my hair on vacation and i was with a friend and i was just ripping through it with the straightener and she literally looked at me and said careful, and that was the moment. I realized you know what i'm a part of the problem here for sure and if i don't like my hair, there are things that i can do so that it's performing its best on a daily basis. Another thing that i want to say when it comes to your hair care is be mindful of how much you are coloring and highlighting it now. This is only a tip and a tactic that i learned from being in this pandemic. I you can maybe see it's a little bit more blonder at the tips here, but since the pandemic, i have not colored my hair at all. Now i do recognize that i am in my late 20s and i do not have any graying or white hairs coming in. That also adds to the layer of being self-conscious about my hair, and i am privileged right now that this is my natural hair color. But my natural hair color, when i was younger, was like white. So that is something that i'm used to, and that is something that i've fallen into the routine of always highlighting my hair. So if we can kind of take away some of those steps, especially when it comes to bleaching your hair, where you are removing parts of your hair, it's just going to make a little bit weaker. So maybe a point of this is also a bit of acceptance when you're washing your hair. This is a big tip, only condition the ends. This is not something that i was doing all the time. Actually, i think it was this year or last year that i really started doing it, because that's actually what the technician said when i got extension, she was like do not do not put conditioner in the top part of your hair. It'S going to really build up within the tapes and everything like that. That was the kind that i had and it will as well create the look of greasiness. So literally, when i wash my hair, it's probably only this bottom part that i will condition lightly and i will work through - and i remember this so much because my mom and i have similar hair. That'S where i got it thanks bon and she would always say just a little dime size of conditioner. I know so often we just want to go in and deep condition, but that's not going to be a part of your hair, washing story every single day anymore. It'S just going to be the ends of your hair there and then as well a limited amount of that conditioner when it comes to washing out that conditioner and that shampoo, one of the greatest things that you could do is turn down the temperature. Now i don't think that every single one of us is going to be doing a polar bear, dip every single time that we rinse our hair out, but if you can get over to a lukewarm or even a room, temp water, when you rinse out your hair, That'S going to be so beneficial for the strands: scalding, hot water, really hot water actually dries out your hair and it dries out your skin too. There'S, maybe something you can think of. Even when one of those drops kind of hits your skin, it evaporates slightly and it pulls out moisture. So that's why, when you have a really hot shower, it's great to also moisturize your skin, but that is a topic for another time when you get out of the shower now, you have shampooed. Now you've conditioned now you've rinsed when you get out of the shower. Do not brush your hair vigorously when your hair is wet, it is at its most fragile state, and that is when we want to be extremely extremely gentle. You can run through with your fingers. Obviously, that is like having a fine tooth, or rather a really wide tooth comb. A wide tooth comb is really great to just get some of those tangles out you're going to want to put in maybe a little detangler product, but also that's another tip. If you've got really thin, hair, a ton of product might just weigh that down. So try a couple and find the one that works for you now as well, when you're drying your hair, it's good to just go in with your towel and dab it slightly and not do the whole like head shaker routine, because that can also cause damage to Your hair, so this is just something if you can go on an air dry day, do that and if you can just squeeze that hair, maybe a little bit dryer, maybe as well using one of those microfiber towels can also be great versus a harsh cotton towel. One thing that i do as often as i see fit - maybe every six to eight weeks is: i will either go in for a little trim or because the pandemic and honestly i've been doing this. My whole life is, i will just perform a little trim and it's very easy literally to the point of just combing through and then trying to find more of that blunt cut you cannotice, maybe even right now, take your hair and just see if there's all these Little stray wispies long pieces, those are likely the pieces that are making your hair look a little bit frazzled and out of sorts and stringy. So those are the ones you want to remove. I as well go for a blunt cut. Now i'm not a hair gesture and i'm not a hair technician, but i know personally, when i have more of a blunt cut, it makes my hair look thicker versus a thinning of the ends, because that's what we're trying to get away from is the thinning. Speaking of washing your hair, one thing that i've also started to adopt is dry shampoo. Now this can be a phenomenal phenomenal resource for you if you have thin hair, because it's just think of a t-shirt that you have washing it every single day, how that's going to turn out. That'S something that i really started. Thinking about jonathan van ness said it on an episode of queer eye, and i was just a yes by the end of the month, because you have just washed it every single day, you're really pulling a lot of those fibers out. Well, it's the same with your hair, your hair is strands of protein and they need a break from the washing. So what you can do is invest in a dry shampoo. Try a couple see which one works for you. I'Ve tried the living proof shampoo. I find that one to be really amazing. Also, i really love the batiste dry shampoo, and i know that there are a few different options as well. If you don't want to get an aerosol, can another tip for dry, shampoo and thin hair. Actually that i heard is to actually put the dry shampoo in your hair in different layers. Let it sit for a couple minutes and then go in with a towel and then just kind of rub it out and that towel is going to pull out some of the oils and the dry shampoo, because if you have thin hair, one of the concerns could Probably be build up with the dry shampoo and then you've got thin. Stringy, hair and dry shampoo build up, and it's like what's the solution here. A good thing about dry shampoo, though, is that it can actually add a little bit of volume and limp haired. Ladies and men get at me at night. This is the time when you're, like okay, we've washed our hair. This day now, i'm gon na try and make it last two tomorrow, but this overnight period one it's gon na flatten out my hair more and two. It'S going to make it crimpy and crazy, depending on how i am laying on it one never go to sleep with wet hair. Please maybe a little bit damp if you've got it in a bun and it is protected. But if you go to sleep with with wet hair, you are going to wake up. Looking like michael bolton, you are going that was me this morning. You are going to wake up with wild hair. It is going to be just so. It is going to be living in complete entropy randomness. There is going to be flavors of kinked hair, curled, hair straight hair, stringy hair. It'S not going to be a good time! So if you can, if you are someone who goes to bed and has a shower before bed, this may be one of those times where you have a shower and you put your hair up in a little bun or you are just trying to do a little Tight bun, so when you take it out, it's at least a bit straighter within that curl. If that's the way your hair is, if you are blessed with amazing curly hair, i know that you probably have a completely different routine and there are probably other youtube videos that will fit for the overnight hair routine. For you, because i clearly have this limp straight hair now i also sleep on a silk pillowcase. This is another thing i adopted after christmas. It was what i asked for for christmas, and this is something that i've heard a lot from my one friend dominique she's, a black influencer, and she talks often a lot about her hair, and i will link her down below because she has amazing tips on specifically Black women's hair and how to take care of it after it's relaxed or our natural hair or overnight, hair, and one of the things that she was saying, is that a silk pillowcase is really phenomenal or even putting your hair up. A certain way at night can be really phenomenal, so i adopted that as well. Silk pillowcase will allow your hair to slip when you are sleeping. The thing we are trying to avoid here at night is friction between our hair proteins and that pillowcase. So this can be a really interesting, maybe gift to give someone or just to try out i'm gon na link the one i have down below now. I think there are many options. All you have to do is find a 100 silk pillow case. It doesn't have to be this one, take a surf around the net and just try to find one and just try it out for a night one of the first things that i did when i was getting older, and i noticed that my hair just wasn't. Looking the way that i wanted it to look anymore was i went to the doctor. I had my blood taken and often times thinning hair can be a signature of a vitamin deficiency or a hormone deficiency, and this is something that if you have thinning hair, you notice in the shower hair is falling out and you just don't know. What'S going on. Please check in with your doctor because they can have the right answers for you and on the other side of the coin here as well. Sometimes things in your diet can really help out with thinning hair. So one of the things that i want to challenge myself to do is actually go in and talk to a dietitian, because there are things that we can eat in our daily lives that can really help towards proliferation of better stronger hair nails and skin. There are also supplements that are out there, and this is another thing that i highly suggest checking in with a doctor about whether it be a boost in vitamin d biotin or anything like that. These are all things that can really contribute and the inside that contribute to the outside look of our overall body and beauty also drink a lot of water. That'S just gon na help with everything i give it a go every single week in terms of a hair treatment. I try. I really do try i'm a bath enthusiast, so this is when i find the perfect time to put in a hair mask or a hair treatment, and i only do this once a week because again i don't want products to weigh down my hair, but i do Want to give it the nourishment that it needs that shampoo and conditioner just simply aren't cutting it on. I have been doing the olaplex treatment and i do find that it helps. In fact, i did it last night and this morning after a little trim, because i also did my little trim, i did find that my hair was laying much nicer and much smoother and it just felt a lot healthier. So also look into a couple of hair treatments. I will again link the one that i have been doing below now that we're on a little bit of a product speak. I also want to say when looking for a shampoo or conditioner, two things to really really avoid sulfates, as well as silicones parabens as well, is another part of this puzzle. Sulfates can really start to deteriorate. Your hair, i'm going to link down the shampoo as well that i use below, and it's like a the phrase of it - is like angel hair and i'm like yeah. If i was a pasta, i would be angel, hair, pasta for sure um. So that is something that i highly recommend also look for damaging alcohols in your shampoo. I know it seems daunting to find the right product, but once you do, you can start to just build your routine and then it can be out of sight out of mind. You buy a bottle of shampoo and it's going to last a long time because you've got thin hair, hopefully you're not overusing, but anyways, that's actually a benefit to having thin hair. Maybe you won't use this me products. You won't be spending enough money just trying to make this into a positive for you in your life, but if you invest the time in finding the right, shampoo and conditioner this, this could be good. Okay - and i know it can seem daunting, but once you find it once you've got it, it's going to be a part of your beauty routine and it's going to really start to amp up the health of your hair. So no sulfates, no silicones one of the tough things about a healthy hair routine is trying to use less heat. Now this morning i did blow dry my hair and straighten it. So this is what it looks like when i do that, but if we can start to try to figure out some ways to use less heat, this can also be your second day hair routine. Maybe the first day you're, like you, know what this is when i feel most confident. I think i'm gon na be drop blow drying my hair and putting heat on it. It'S just the way it goes find a way to do a second day, hair that involves dry shampoo, maybe pinning your hair back, letting some pieces come forward and then using a bold lip and a great pair of earrings, and that's where the volume and the character Is spoken throughout how you appeal to the world i get it. Confidence is huge when it comes to hair loss and thin hair, whether you are a man or a woman, i don't care whatever you identify, as this is huge and it's why our beauty industry is making so much money off of hair products. I'M gon na leave. You with a debatable topic, debatable topic number one: should we pay for the same haircut rate as someone with a long voluminous mane? Let me know in the comments below thank you all for watching this video. I hope that some of these tips helped you. If we could get a comment thread going below on what products you guys are using and other tips that you have just to build a community of support for my thin hair, ladies and men out there, because i know i know i i know it can be Really really stressful, sometimes, and sometimes the way that your day goes is determined on on how your hair looks right in the morning and throughout the day, it can certainly change thinking of making some more videos uh like this, so be sure to subscribe, and like this Video and comment, if you did like it, because it only helps me figure out what i want to do more on this channel. I love you guys so much and i hope you're having a good hair day bye some light shampoo. Didn'T you just use her comb. I did you

Amanda Weldon: Hi Everyone! I had some questions about the products I use so I make this video: https://youtu.be/5Imw56t5LIA | Thank you all for your support. Seeing your support for me and one another in this community is just the best. xo - A

bindy thecat: I feel us thin haired folks should get a discount on hair dye and highlights too! We don't use near the product as those with medium to thick hair!

Ally Tamara: Same, girl, same! I’ve also been so insecure about my thin hair my whole life! Your hair is absolutely beautiful, Amanda!

Beatrice Claire: Im glad I found this video, because I've always had super fine hair and its my biggest frustration. Especially as both my sisters have beautiful thick hair that grows really long. I've spent years and years perfecting my routine, products and care to make the best of my hair, grow it long and healthy. For me washing every 3 days, using a homemade dry shampoo in-between, sleeping on a silk pillow and a French plait, no ponytails. Always air dry upside down or with a loose bun on top of my head, never let it dry flat on my head. Use silk scrunchies. Protein and multivitamin supplements. Bi-weekly overnight oil treatments. Aloe vera scalp treatments once a week. See all the shit people with fine hair have to go through

Jessica Y: So glad you mentioned no silicones! This is the biggest thing that has helped my hair look more full and feel more healthy! My hair would feel flat and greasy by the end of the day, and I thought it was just my hair type. But it was the silicones!! Also - my hairdresser just tells me not to tip him since I have thin hair

Rose Petal: Amanda, you've given some great tips here! My hair has been thinning since the beginning of the pandemic. I am older, so aging may be playing a part, but stress is a factor I believe. I started washing my hair less, even 4 or 5 days apart. I must admit, I've tried some high priced "anti-aging" shampoo/conditioners that just haven't made much difference. I've had my blood checked, good iron levels, after eating (sorry vegans) lamb liver. This was recommended by a naturopath for raising iron level. There are lots foods that can help with staying healthy: Brazil nuts, sunflower seeds, walnuts, dark green leafy veggies. Supplements: Collegen, Biotin, Vit D. I've also heard that gently massaging the scalp can help by getting the blood flowing. So far, my hair is still thinning, getting harder to manage. I know it is time to get a shorter haircut :(

Lauren Hebert: Omg I feel you 100% with this video! My fine hair has been an insecurity of mine for as long as I can remember! Loved how vulnerable you got and your tips are amazing! You are freaking beautiful with or without extensions and I hope you know that!!! ❤️❤️

Monika Styleloveshome: Gosh this video is LITERALLY all of my thoughts right now! Removed my extensions and now trying to get my thin hair to a better condition! Thanks for the tips and sharing! Also we definitely shouldn’t be paying the same price for cuts and colour

Brianna Lewis: Thank you for this video! You are so supportive and kind! Your approach is unapologetic but also vulnerable, and I think we can all relate so much with Covid and the isolation. I also have thin hair, and can apply all of these tips. Happy Easter! I hope we're almost on the other end of this crazy quarantine!

Angela Marriott: First video I have actually seen where the person actually has fine thin hair! So sick of trying to find help and I click on a video to a girl who has waist length wavy full head of hair! Thank you so much for the ideas, support and reality of avoiding our insecurities! Much love ❤️

Susan Baggott: All my life I had thick hair -- then I had to start a life-long medicine that pulled out 90% of my hair and it is SO thin I was depressed about loss of femininity. Thank you so much for all your wonderful tips not just on hair care, but also about our emotional response to our hair and how to put it all together for healthy emotions AND healthy hair.

Lisa Levitt: Great video! Hello fine hair tribe, I can totally relate. Here are a few low-cost items that really have helped my hair. 1) Weekly mix an egg with 1 teaspoon olive oil, massage into scalp and through the hair (cover with plastic cap and leave in for 20-60 minutes). Messy but worth it!! 2) aloe Vera gel - minimum 2x daily scalp massage morning and evening. Add essential oil of choice for yummy smell 3) use aloe Vera gel for hair styling too Thru the years I have spent a lot of $$ on hair products and these have been just as effective if not better. Also looks like I am older than most of you, however during pandemic my hair got a LOT better. So there is hope

Lucy Fenneymore: Never related to a video so much in my life! My fine hair is my biggest insecurity and it is so refreshing to find such an honest, inspiring video! You have made my day xx

Sophie Lamarche: It's funny how I despise looking at myself on a picture/video because I only focus on how thin my hair looks. But when I watched your video, I was so captivated by your testimony that I didn't even notice your hair thickness! You're styling it so well, it looks so shiny and healthy <3 Congrats on your quest to accepting your hair as is, it's sending such a positive message! :)

Jillian Mayfield: Yes! Thank you for broaching the haircut cost issue! I dread getting my haircut when it feels like the stylist doesn't know what to do with fine hair and it still costs so much for 15 20 min of their time.

Jessica Gallardo: Its hard to come across videos about thin hair when it comes to hair tips and products since its focused on people with a lot of hair. To see that others feel the same and know exactly what I have to go through as well, it makes me feel less insecure! Thank you for these tips!!

Sarah Gardiner: So thankful for this video!! I thought I was alone in my thin & fine hair journey. I remember asking my mom when I was young if I had cancer because my hair would fall out so easily. Love all of the advice you gave in this video! Would love to know what silk pillowcase brand you found?

mrsbliss13: YAAAASSSS! I Agree with all of that! This is everything I have learnt over the past 43 years with fine hair! This is the perfect list for people with fine hair who want to truly look after it. Tested, tried & true. I love Kevin Murphy and also the Eleven “I want body” shampoo & conditioner. Silk pillow cases and tangle teezer is a must. Gently does it. Great Vid

Lisa R: Very informative, thank you! I stopped bleaching my hair (hiding the silvers) in Oct 2019 and my new growth hair is thicker and softer than I've felt since I started coloring. It's still incredibly fine and I started to notice split ends and breakage. Noooooo! I've switched to fine tooth comb, and invested in Aveda blue malva and the super moisturising shampoo and spray in conditioner. I hope this works. I have oily scalp, but I think I will need to reduce daily washing to every other day.

Kimberly Sorce: I feel you with the thin hair struggles!! Great tips, thank you

mommylamb3: I have thin fine hair. I am also a hairstylist. I struggle myself every day. I also have extremely oily hair. All you said is great advice. All Olapelx products are amazing. One thing I will say is I do charge the same no matter the hair for a haircut. A haircut is a haircut. I see what you are saying and get it as a fine, thin haired person. But it is a cut. ‍♀️. Thank you for your video.

Jill_Of_Trades :: Tips start at 3:12 1. Be easy on your hair - pretty much in regards to anything...Use a brush with flexible bristles so less breakages happen. Use a wide tooth comb instead of a.thin tooth comb. 2. Be mindful with how much you are colouring /processing your hair ..Accept your hair for what it is as much as possible 3. Condition the bottom part of your hair only 4. Turn down the temperature : rinse with lukewarm water 5. Do not brush vigorously (especially when out of the shower) 6. Do not use so many products 7. Dry hair naturally. 9. Microfibre towel is better than cotton-roch towel 10. Trim your hair regularly ; every 6-8 weeks 11. Use dry shampoo 12. Towel dry pat the dry shampoo 13.

biancazangheri: I’ve been battling with a hefty eating disorder on top of already having thin hair genetically so it’s been a little tough on my confidence, thanks so much for making this video, it might seem little for you but it helps so much❤️

D M: Thank you Amanda for this content - I have the same type of hair and it has taken me so long to embrace it, but I fall off sometimes... Mine, unfortunately, doesn't grow very fast either, so I have a double "whammy". I will continue to keep my chin up and moving forward especially when I listen to encouraging you tube videos like yours!!! :)

Sydney Lehman: Wow! I found this video tonight after I got frustrated yet again for having such thin hair. I have hair exactly like yours and I have never seen a video that actually portrays having thin hair in a realistic way. This has been my biggest insecurity my entire life. I wear my hair up almost every day because of it but this made me feel so much better and not so alone in being insecure with my hair. These tips were so helpful. Thank you, your hair is so beautiful and you can just tell how genuine you are.

bigbadcow: Thank you for making this video!!!! you have no idea how much I appreciate this as a fine haired young woman who has never had any insights about how to deal with my hair and who has ALWAYS had trouble with styling and having volume etc.

Kira Kjear: Our hair is the same! Thank you so much for this. I have just started hair training after washing my hair everyday for the last 20 years. Has made such a difference. I too rely on extensions and only feel myself when they are in. Hoping that will change this year.

Sandra A: This video resonated so much with me. I use to have a full head of hair and it has thinned out a lot post-pregnancy. I find it to be much thinner then ever and limp at the crown. Dry shampoos have been a challenge mostly since my hair is curly. Curly hair is easier to style when wet to combat frizz. It has hurt my confidence level and I am more mindful of how I care for it. These tips were great. Thank you so much for sharing!!

Andrea Jones: Whilst being in lockdown and working from home etc. I think I’ve really messed my hair up. It’s so thin and fine and I’ve brushed it too hard when wet and a load has broken off at the back Will definitely use these tips, going to try and look after it better and hopefully will grow out again. Really dreading having to go to any events soon, struggle to ever get it to look nice even before.

wetleafs: fine hair has always been my biggest insecurity, but seeing someone embrace it and take care of their hair and all these lovely people in the comments really helped me today. the one thing i do like about my hair is how soft it is, and i’m hoping to start liking the rest :)

Sarah Kavarnos: This is awesome!! I skip a lot of YouTubers who talk about thin hair because they often have thicker hair than me. But I could relate to this SO much. I am glad I found someone who truly understands the struggle

Vicki Bock-Ledbetter: Girl I feel you when you pull into a pony and it's as thin as a pencil ✏

Jerusha Lumley: Oh my goodness, my hair is almost exactly like yours! I am a dark blonde/light brunette. My hair was practically white when I was young, and my hair is very fine and delicate. I constantly deal with grease and limp hair, and I really dont know what to do with it. Glad to know that there is someone who shares my struggles!

Anjo Gal: PSA: 4 different stylists have told me that frequent ponytails & buns actually do MORE damage to the hair and follicles. I tested the theory out about 10 years ago, and sure enough, I started growing more hair. I also don't wash as much ... I know, gross. But if you're like me with a dry skin/hair issue on the regular, it doesn't matter. If you wash your pillow case at least once a week to wash any hair oil/product out, you really don't need to wash your hair more than maybe once a week, or in my case once every two weeks. I don't use product, so my hair doesn't ever get greasy. If I SWEAT, then that's another story and I need to work on massaging some of the excess sebum away from my scalp to prevent dandruff & itching. But because my hair is ultra fragile, I avoid product, heat, and frequent washing. Tight, daily/nightly ponytails/buns are my next no-no.

Ashley: Also thanks for this video. Always searching in vein for resources to fix this scraggly ass mess of a head of mine. You TRULY KNOW how it feels and you can tell. Thanks for overcoming your insecurity and making this video. It’s my top insecurity as well outside of my teeth.

Kathryn Claridge: I have found that the perfect cut for me is a blunt cut lob that just skims my shoulders. Also I love Schwartzkopf "Shine" oil treatment I only use on the ends. I even find my hair is nicer the second day! And I like your idea of just trimming the tips of your hair. I'm going to try that. Thanks for a great video.

Elisabeth Knight: This is literally the first youtube video I've ever left a comment on, and I watch loads!! You are so honest, and your comments fit the daily thoughts I have! Thank you so much for your honesty, and tips (I wrote a list of purchases as i watched!) I've always struggled with fine hair, and as I grow older (40yrs in a few short months, gulp!) it is thinning quickly too. Most people don't get the distinction between FINE and THINNING, and even less understand the distress at having both!! You inspired me to think more positively about my hair, and to find solutions. Thank you so much! x

Maggie Meath: I have baby fine hair like yours. Washing my hair in distilled water has been life-changing. Hard water (with lots of chemicals) had been weighing down and drying my hair out since I moved to LA a few years ago. Great for extensions too. :)

Anjilena Grace: I have very long hair, and a lot of it, but it's so ridiculously fine! When I get deep conditioning treatments the ladies say my hair is as fine as a little girl's hair. It's so frustrating the amount of effort it takes to keep it from breakage, just sleeping wrong can cause a million split ends. (10/10 recommended using silk pillowcases if you have fine hair) However, by eating healthy and diligently protecting it from the damage that heat, friction, and unprotective hairstyles so easily cause, I think it is possible to learn to appreciate the positives of having fine hair. For example, I have tail bone length hair and I hardly get headaches compared to my friends with much thicker, but also shorter hair than I have. I also think my hair hardly knots because there is not much friction because fine hair is sometimes softer. We hust have to look at the bright side :) <3

Sez Cerjan: Great video, thank you for this informative video! My hair is identical to yours (even in our baby photos) so I appreciate all these tips from you and will start to implement them all

Jadomi: Game changer for me is using a plain cheap cotton t-shirt to dry my hair. Instead of a terry cloth or microfiber towel. I gently and lighty twist my hair in the tee once I get out of the shower and leave it on while I dry off my body and lotion. If you feel it is too wet after gently dab it like she said.

Karla Neese: Thank you so much for this video! At 50, I’ve never been good at dealing with my hair so this has been a great resource! So appreciated!

Aileen Gallagher: wow! my hair is exactly the same as yours. Ive kept it very short my whole life because I get so insecure when its long. I've been trying lately to change that and grow out / style my hair. thanks for this video!

Olivia T: Really loved how real you are, hit me where it hurts but thanks for being honest and sharing your experience :)

Jen_not_Jenn: I’m so glad I found this video, even if I am 9 months late. Finally someone who’s hair is actually like mine and whose pony tail looks like mine too. Thank you for making this!

N V Clarke: Yes I have fine hair and over pandemic I stopped highlighting and growing out my natural hair colour. I have never ever ever felt more myself than I do now. It’s been amazing and I will never put any dye into my hair again. I am in late forties and will have grey coming in soon and will go with it. Ditch the die ladies. My hair is shiny, natural shades in it, needs less washing, and no longer falls out. It’s amazing

Joelle Hoareau: YES! OMW! The greasy thing too! I even tried using a soap shampoo that is supposed to help with greasy hair, but it really doesn't make that much of a difference. My hair looks fuller when I curl it - but then like you said, it won't stay! My hair has been fine my whole live, but it started getting worse after school. I thought it was due to dying it, but I actually discovered I had a thyroid disorder, which makes your hair fall out more, and often gives you dry scalp, so that's great. But thank you so much for these tips, they were so helpful :) THANK YOU FOR MAKING THIS VIDEO!

Anna Burns: When my hair came in after birth, it was light red and quickly turned to white blonde. It stayed that way until I was about 40, and then started growing in slightly mousey. I have had extremely fine, thin, flyaway hair all my life. I may have an advantage because of a small bit of wave. My hair really frustrated me due to it's fineness and limpness! I have done some research and found out that naturally blonde hair is missing a layer in the hair. Normal hair has a cuticle, a cortex, and a medulla, which is the center most part of the hair which gives it body and strength. Natural blondes often do not have the medulla, which is why our hair feels waaaayyyyy tooooo soft! Knowing that didn't really help any, but it did explain why my hair was so unmanageably soft. I have noticed also that products really weigh my hair down quickly and make really stringy and stiff. You are correct, it's about acceptance and doing the best we can with what we have. A little trick I learned, I condition my hair first and comb out all the tangles and then I gently wash it. It works much better for my hair. btw...protein in my hair products really helps my hair have a bit of texture.

Kaitlyn: youre actually the first youtuber ive seen that has hair similar to mine when i look up "thin hair tips"

Holly Miller: Thank you so much for this! I am So self conscious about my hair. I can never wear it down because it doesn’t hold style. I have been trying to wear it down at home just to keep it healthy but I always put it up whenever I leave the house because that the only way to appear to have body! I will be definitely trying out all of these tips. Thank you!!!! And honestly your hair looks so great! Looks so shiny and healthy

Grecia Perdriel Eid: I feel you!! I also have very thin hair and fall hair. Thank you so much!

Cass: I struggled with my hair for so many years! I too used to get extensions done and I was addicted dying my hair blonde. My hair is naturally a dark brown so, the more i dyed it the thinner it became. When i had to remove the extensions I had very little hair left. It hurt me to the core. I felt so bad about myself. I went on a healthy hair journey for years trying to grow thicker longer hair. But i always had frizzy hair so i would have to heat style it to make it look decent. Then when the pandemic hit I quit styling my hair and tried the curly girl method. And my hair changed soooo much. It is now so long, the longest I have ever grown it and it has volume! The biggest change was I stopped brushing my hair when it was dry and only in the shower with conditioner. And my hair stopped breaking ! I realize this isnt for everyone but it really changed my hair and I just wanted to share with you.

Soapandwater6: Amanda, your hair looks great! It's light, loose, clean and child-like. I also have always had fine, thin hair, but mine is naturally curly and frizzy. I'm 65 and still obsessed with straightening it with a big curling iron every other day. Otherwise, I look like Michael Bolton and feel like a wild woman. I am not a wild woman, so I feel that I must do this or avoid mirrors all day. My curl won't blow out well, so I have to use a curling iron. On humid days, it goes right back to curly and frizzy. Also, at my age my hairline has started to recede. I'm thinking about getting a cute, thick, straight wig with the hair I've always envied and be done with this lifelong struggle. I would have so much fun with that!

eac: i relate to this insecurity! thank you for sharing and being vulnerable with us

thisisadifferentamber: Thank you for this video! I’ve rarely felt so relatable when it came to my hair.

B Smith: I think it also helps to focus and appreciate the good things about ourselves too. I really really really wish I had thick luxurious hair, but when it comes down to it, I wouldn't ever trade my good skin to get it.

jaclynlovesemos: I have naturally thin and fine hair. It's so hard to find hair tips and care (especially natural hair care) for our hair type. Thanks for having one of the only videos addressing it. I've been doing so much to try to help my hair grow longer. I haven't used heat on my hair in about 5 years and did no shampoo for a few. I know it's my genetics but I hate feeling hopeless about my hair and I really want long hair. Considering shaving it because that's about the only thing I haven't tried for it health.

Falcon Eddie: Layers make hair look thinner, but a lot of hair stylists will tell their thin hair clients that they would look good w/ face framing layers. You should get a long lob (long bob), layers are the worst.

Kaitlyn Jury: I have fine thin color processed (platinum blonde) hair and I remember being charged SO much for my pixie cut trims and being pissed. Totally agree that specific hair types should have specific prices :)

Sheila Price: Thank you for suggesting the “Black hair site” I’m bi-racial woman my hair is in-between textures thin and straight. I also like to hear both sides. Blessings to you and continued success

Annika Richter: I have the exact same hair as you! Thank you for making us girls feel unalone!

whitewave68: Thank you so much for your video! Something I have been doing is soaking fenegreek seeds overnight and then spaying it in my hair and massaging into roots. It’s known for making your hair grow. I like it because it adds volume and shine! Try it out! I love it!!!

GloryB-TV: Doing some research for an upcoming vid about my thin, fine hair and volumizing products & found your video. When you opened with the "oil-in-the-hair" issue, I figured you'd choose to wash it again! Me, too. A styling product I really like is the L'Oreal Blow Dry Creme (1/2 tsp before drying). My hair will only hold a curl from a curling iron if I use John Amico's Curling Iron Texturizer spray (a.k.a. "CIT"). (You can call them to ask which salons in your area sell it to avoid paying a shipping fee.) And my favorite hair spray is Matrix's Vavoom spray (and I can stand the scent!). I'm testing some other volumizing products now and hair growth products (I lost more hair in Oct & Nov and it hasn't grown back, like I had any to lose!). :D

ᴄ ʜ ʀ ɪ s s ʏ: Thank you for making this video! I have thin and sparse Asian hair and have been teasing my hair for over 15 years to get that volume. But I’m trying to stop and it’s so hard to accept the way I look now with small hair :,(

sandra Alves: Thanks for this. An important topic for me for sure! We should not pay the same rate. It literally takes the hair dresser 10 mins tops to cut my fine thin hair.

Anita Clemens: I really enjoyed this video. I have thin straight hair as well. I have always hated it, because I had to do so much to it, to get it to look full. My best friend in high school had a full head of thick hair that looked like a pyramid on her it was so full. I was very envious of that hair. Now, I am much older, 66 years old and my hair is starting to thin. I did go to the doctor and my hormones were not right. I have upped my dosage of Levothyroxine and am trying Minoxidil every night. It is not too bad, but I do not want it to get worse. It looks like I caught it in time. I have been using the Minoxidil for three months. I also started to take biotin and 2 scoops of protein powder every day. The thing is, that I have to wash my hair every day to get that stuff off my scalp. Before the pandemic I was always at the gym and I would come home with a sweaty scalp or hair being on the floor. I had to wash it. I use a hair clarifying shampoo once a week followed by a conditioning mask. I sleep on a silk pillow case and I put my hair up in a top knot every night before bed. I agree with everything you said about healthy hair and I feel the same way about my self confidence. I think you might be on to something about not costing as much for a hair cut as a fuller head. Never thought of that before. :-)

Αικατερίνη Νινίκου: Thank you so much for uploading this! You described the feelings so accurately:)

Marie Crosset: Really enjoyed this video !! Please do more thin hairstyles hacks i loved the one with the scrunchies !!! Thank youuuuu

Madeleine Ioannou: Thank you so much. It’s amazing that I know all the tips you gave us and find myself following none of them! Thanks for your lovely reminder and support for the big deal this topic is for so many women.

LJ B: Use cassia obovata (neutral henna) every few weeks for great condition and volume. I have very fine hair and I made my greying hair strawberry blond by adding a third red henna to this as well. Much thicker hair and don't need to wash as often plus a lot of shine.

Ann Bost: I have struggled with this my whole life. I too have discovered that dry shampoo is my hair's best friend. Also I find that wearing a microfiber towel under my shower cap when I shower keeps the humidity from making it limp and frizzy. The struggle is real!

Emily Griffin: I am a few weeks into using New Wash. Previously (for years) I have been able to only shampoo 2 or 3 times a week without a grease issue. My problem was frizz. With New Wash, day 1, yes my hair looks amazing though flat at the roots. But day 2 and on is awful - no curl or body and quickly greasy.

lcgc1980: When I lighten my hair, the hair seems to have a bit more body to it, BUT it's more tangly upfront. So, to prevent breakage I use a wide tooth comb to detangle before I get in the shower. When my hair is midlength, I put on conditioner first, let it set for 5 minutes, rinse, then shampoo my roots, and rinse some more. When my hair is longer, I really like Aveda's anti breakage spray! It's a great detangler. I still wash my hair every day, bc I have dark blonde hair that looks greasy even with dry shampoo.

RedLadyBug 91: I have really thick hair as a child and teen then I thought it looked “bushy” and asked my hairdresser to “thin my hair out” and this was the worse mistake Eva. I also have thin hair due to mental health anxiety issues due to stress. You can also see my scalp on the sides of my head and if my fringe in bright like you can SEE my scalp! My Comfortable hair style is a pony tail and fringe. I only use heat on my fringe advice #help

MariaSophiaRBoudet: Thanks so much for this info! It really helps to know what we might possibly be doing wrong. I have fine hair & when I Style it looks amazing but then I step out side my front door it’s turns into a hot mess! Flat & frizzy Yuck

Lisa Kain: Silk pillowcases are a must for fine hair! If you are a side sleeper and get pillowcase "wrinkles" the silk pillowcase will get rid of those too!!!

Jenelle Nicole: OMG I hate my fine hair so much and I get it with the extensions. I use to get them and loved having them in but when taking them out I would cry because I hated seeing my hair without them. I'm slowly getting better at just keeping my hair natural and I am seeing a difference because extensions care make our fine hair worse!

emilia löw: Hey that was so helpful ☺️ Which type of extension did you find less thinning or damaging on fine hair ? Tape in or bonding extension ?

Amanda Lee: Yes! Dry shampoo has been amazing. I finally learned how to use it right and I can skip one day of washing. Batiste is my absolute favorite dry shampoo.

M.B.: I was so relieved when the video started, you have no idea. If I see one more video where a woman talks about how she cares for her thin/fine hair and when you watch it she has very usual medium thickness...I wanna screeeaam. I'm sure they're all super lovely women but so many of them do not know what they're talking about, they don't know what thin hair is. Like, I know it's an insecurity of yours but it's so important to have these videos. You watch what people think is thin hair and you're like ugh am I abnormal if THAT'S thin?

Montsergirl: Love this! I can relate sooooo much I just found your channel but I hope you’ve done an updated video of this since then, if not you should

Natsuki: Girl thank you for giving a real video. My hair type is exactly like yours and it is also my biggest insecurity ever. I don’t know how to get over it, it brings my mood down and I constantly look at it. Do you have any tips?

Meredith Rakes: Omg! Having thin/fine hair is a nightmare! I feel your pain!

Janie B: I really enjoyed your video. I have suffered with fine hair for 70 years. I will certainly try some of the products you have recommended. I wanted to add, I was advised to switch up shampoos every once in awhile...per hairstyles. Thanks for sharing!

BoMwarriorVlog: First off I'm giving a thumbs up for great sound, splitting the video into chapters, and having good associated clips & pop-up text. Now to keep watching for nice advice.

Where are we going now?!: Omg…so i loved your video :) thank you! I have fine hair and i definitely feel like a weirdo….I LOVE dry shampoo and feel like that is MY saving grace…sad that i didn’t even know about it until like 5 years ago!!! I had teenage daughters who are now 20 something daughters, but they are the ones who showed me the way! Back in the day! Dry shampoo has really revolutionized my life!!!! Go dry shampoo!!!!

Jane Fryer: I have your hair type ! I do your routine ! It s so hard not dying your hair, but I do mine prob about 3 times a year ! I have found foils less harsh! Wash my hair once a week it s less harsh and I noticed the difference! I want a silk pillow case - for wrinkles too! So true about about diet we want less chemicals in our bodies too! Thanks ❤️

Maureen Bouey: So glad I found you - this is my issue too! I look forward to more like this.

Adriana Kitchens: I have very fine hair and a blunt cut really helps it look thicker! I'm only 25 and my hair is already going super gray so I dye it with henna from Lush since it's not damaging at all!

Sarah Leaper: Yessss this is amazing!! I also LOVE L'Oreal's No Haircut Cream in the orange bottle - honestly holy grail product for me!!! Thanks for shedding light on our STRUGGLE because it is real.

Amanda Weldon: Hi Everyone! I have been so touched by all of your responses to this video. It's because of your support I've felt so much more comfortable talking about having fine/thin hair. That being said I have created another video (https://youtu.be/opOQ9rstNJg) all about building confidence when struggling with this hair type and insecurity. Much love! xo

Thea Henderson: yesss your hair is almost the exact same as mine, so nice to see because i almost never see anyone on youtube with my hair type! thanks for the video <3

Debra Edith: Im so pleased i found you. Finally someone talking dealing with fine that actually has fine hair. Keep the videos coming. I have very fine wavy hair and i hate it but its what ive been given so any help or tips to make things easier would be much appreciated. Kind regards. Debra

Shania Azzahra: i love this video sm! thank you for sharing, and for everyone who comment on this video, i just... feel like im not alone appearently. My fine hair is also my insecurities but im trying my best to love it now.

raieven: Since trimming my own hair in quar I think it looks so much better than when any stylist has done it. They don’t ever go blunt enough.

Joey Ho: Thanks for these helpful tips! Super appreciate it. Just curious, how often do you wash your hair? I wash my hair everyday because I hate how oily it gets. However I find that with dry shampoo, I dislike the feeling of how oily yet stiff it feels. Perhaps this is a feeling I just need to get used to!? Thoughts? Also, would you recommend short hair for those with fine and thin hair? Do you find that with short hairstyles, you lose less hair?

Nicki Lees: What would you recommend as a good heat protector? I finally have found someone with hair as fane as mine. I had extensions and I had box braids but right now I am just giving it a rest and trying to embrace my natural hair. Also, no, we should not have to pay as much. Not even for colour.

Wendy Espinosa: Oh my goodness, I have the same hair as you too! Nothing burns me up more than paying $60 for a haircut that takes all but 5 minutes. Thanks for the great tips. One question, how often do you shampoo?

Mary Wemigwase: Castor oil applied to scalp. And as hot oil treatment . But mainly scalp. My hair grows 75. 0/0 faster. You can literally feel the circulation in your scalp improve within minutes. I dye my hair but only to rough up follicles then do oil treatment and afterwards it’s the closest I can come to having normal hair. Blood pressure meds can cause shedding so consider a talk w doc to explore different kinds of medication. Started vitamins for hair but too soon to tell results With fine hair I feel I work as hard as those with thick hair just to make it appear to be more full Have considered saving ponytail trim to make weave application

Kathy Colby: yes born with fine thin hair. Got perms most my life. Quit perming about 15 years ago and starting washing my hair every other day. Day 2 I often used a messy bun from Amazon. My new job gives me Thursdays and Sundays off so have adapted to washing my hair on Mondays and Fridays. I have tried a few different dry shampoos and prefer Dove. I prefer to sleep with a high pony tail. If I leave it down then when I toss and turn I end up pulling on it.
