How to Style Curly Hair From Wet to Dry with Joslyn Davis

Did you ever scrunch your hair, like back in the day with just in the 90s and early 2000 yeah, we've come a long way like Justin Timberlake had the Top Ramen, oh yeah, I did too hey everyone. I am Joslin and for the last 30 or so years I've been flat, ironing and straightening my hair, but this year I am embracing the curls I'm on a journey. Thanks to my fairy godmother of the curly world, Simone Jocelyn, I am so proud of you and so excited that you're rocking your curls and I'm gon na show you and everyone at home what I do to achieve a really easy wash and go curly look everyday! If you aren't able to take a full shower, this is a great trick just to kind of refresh your curls. You just can wet them with a spray bottle and the reason why you want your hair to be really wet when you put the product in is because the water tends to absorb some of the heaviness of the product. So hopefully, what is left over is a really light. Effortless curl yeah, because you don't want your hair to be like so saturated in product like the 90. We don't want the 90s to call us and tell us they want their hair. So good. You can use a wide tooth comb or you can use a brush in the shower. For me, when I use a brush, I get less tight curls and then, when I use a wide tooth comb, I get tighter curls. You may want to do this. No, I have honestly no feeling left in my head or my mom doing my hair when I was a kid. Okay, like I said, I'm not a hair stylist, but I think I remember you start from the bottom and work your yeah, okay cool. It'S the easiest way to get through the tangles is when it's really wet and when it's like just conditioned and when you're in the shower plus, when you get all that nasty hair on loose hair on your hands, you can just sort of like well don't why Don'T even get me started on what the inside of my shower looks like after I do this. Is it a hair museum like mine? It looks like I don't know. Some sort of animal has been like molting or shedding after hibernating all winter. So when I started on the curly hair journey, I reached out to Simone because I feel like our hair textures are very similar and this is a leaving conditioner for mix chicks. That'S awesome for our hair yeah, so I just put in a quarter sized amount for each side of the hair, Merritt's mather, it all up in both hands, and then I just rub it on there and make sure that all of the strands are coated in it. And then Jocelyn can I give you a little homework? I would love a little work. Can you just scrunch this side that I just put the product as I've heard, it's called squish chicken dish lot twist. Chicken dish can't put it in the other side. Now the curls are coming to life scrunch that other side for me actually squish chicken dish yeah. I have to give a shout out one of the curly Queens of the internet. Her name is India. She taught me that shouts to India, my favorite way to dry curly hair is just air dry because it's less frizzy that way, but there is a little trick. You can use a diffuser so Jocelyn. Can I get you to tilt your head this way a little bit so with the diffuser you really just want to, but the hair and it does a really nice job, diffusing it on its own and the reason why we put it on a warm temperature and A low speed is to reduce frizz. If you go in there and you got it on a high speed. You'Re gon na get a lot of flyaways. You do want to dry the front pieces first. Oh really, why is that they're gon na be more uniform, because if you do that side, this sides gon na air dry, while you're waiting and they're so they're, like not even sister symmetry at that point, symmetry. It just makes me think, like how many people are out there in the world who, under their flat iron or blow-dried, hair or like treated here, have something like this and they don't even know. I mean I just looked like Monica on vacation on friends like electrocution, but I never knew that I could put together. I guess - and I think honestly, people just don't know how to manage it or what to do with curly hair. You really never stop learning about it. It'S always a journey and I like to say every curly-haired woman is a chemist, because you learn about the right calculation of water and air and wind and heat, and how all of that translates into the curls that you like to wear. These have become my two best friends after you've, scrunched and diffused the hair. You might still feel like I kind of want a little more definition. I want to like clean up a little bit of the frizz. That'S where these come in. Do you want a super tiny and then like a like medium sized iron, I'm gon na separate these into pieces, you're gon na take the curling iron and just follow whatever the natural pattern of that curl is so you try and kind of like just jump into The party and like fit in and have a good time that is wild boom. I basically only do this if I'm actually going somewhere. If I'm, you don't do this before go to bed at night, you know I tried to kind of make my front ones a little bit longer exactly yes, you're going for that, curly bang, look which is super in style and very cute right now. That'S true! I'M not quite there yet shout out to Sammy Mero. She just pulled off that look really well and I'm like wait so Jocelyn what I like to do and mix up the two sizes I personally like to have some bigger waves, framing the face and then just kind of pepper it in throughout, and that's what your Natural hair is like anyways and you really do get into a rhythm, especially if you're doing this on yourself like. I can honestly do this in like seven minutes really: oh yeah Wow yeah. I can do it really fast. That is definitely a major challenge of trying to learn. Something new is that sometimes this will take me like two or three hours yeah. I would love to do it in seven minutes. That'S more on-brand for me, for sure, can we look in this mirror? That'S over here. What in the world I love? This is the kind of wig I wanna wear I wan na like shave, my own head turned into a wig, and I wear this every day. Is that an option? It looks good. The last thing that we're gon na do is just put on a little extra product at the end. Curly hair loves moisture. This is Fito professional, fiber, paste, okay, and I just take a little bit on my index finger and then I rub it and mostly put it on my finger tips that way I can work it through the hair. So I kind of take it. Oh just to kind of give it a little more definition, exactly less frizz again exactly this is unbelievable. Really yeah. Are you pulling my leg? No, I'm not pulling your leg at all and truthfully every day my hair looks so different and, as I do this longer, my curl pattern becomes more defined. Yeah your hair looks different day by day really and better day by day. I think yeah, that's true. Are you conditioning your hair, a lot, not shampooing it a lot. Um great question, Simone great question like one to two times a week, I'll wash my hair and some days. If I feel like, I just want to wet it all just conditioner, so I'm just grabbing a little oil. This is Moroccan oil and just spraying it into my palm. You probably would want to do that rather than spray it directly on the hair, because then you could risk too much, and that is the worst for curly and then it's ruined at the end, and you just spent three hours doing it and then you suddenly ruin It yeah no not traumatized at all and with the oil, it's really great to get it on the ends, because the ends are always gon na, be the driest part of your hair. Okay. So now I want you to just kind of play with it. I really love the plopping technique that I just learned about yeah, where it really helps just sort of like bring your hair to life in general, a little bit more yeah I mean that is taking up the whole shot. Probably there's a lot so cute, though it feels very natural and soft and, like my boyfriend could like touch my hair without giving a pan like stuck in there. Yes, it is totally boyfriend, proof totally proof, no you're, so talented! You really are. I really enjoyed doing this. That'S the truth. It was so fun truly sincerely get over here. So I can look at you. I would not be where I am on this journey. If it were not for you, because you were one of the first people to reach out to me on instagram, send me a novel of things that I should be doing with my hair, and it was so so helpful. So thank you. Thank you for trying the tips that I sent. I just love seeing women feel good about their curly hair, that's what it all comes down to and I think for everybody for you guys watching you're, probably doing things we don't even know about. I'M sure you have opinions on maybe things we should have done differently or things we should have added, and I want to know what they are so hit. The comments and share the love share the wealth, it's just still all so new to me, I'm like this is this me. I swear like weird. I love my dad. I really do and I'm okay with that right if you liked what you saw subscribe below and if you want to watch another awesome video and you do click right over here.

Joslyn Davis: LOVED being a part of this video! Thank you TODAY Show and Simone for being a part of my curly hair journey!!!!

Sunshine: I was loving it until she used the curling irons she’s recovering from using heat stop using HEAT!

Lei: I love Joslyn! but why is that girl using a curling IRON on her curls?! so many better ways we can teach curlies to accept our curls than to ruin them with heat. Should have got a professional curly girl to show her if anything

K: it looks great but as a hairstylist I'd recommend pin curling the few pieces instead of using a curling iron. in my opinion mixing natural curls with heat styled curls looks fake and unnatural. if you want more defined curls pin them up until they're dry and it'll blend much better than the top layer looking completely different than the bottom!

Mariablfy: I can’t thank Jocelyn enough for the inspiration. I decided to embrace my curls and feel so much better about myself.

Mirina XO: I always knew my hair was wavy but just found out I actually have very curly hair... but it’s passed my knees so I’m really just learning what to do! It’s a lot to work with! So any tips are much appreciated ❤️

Melissa Marchio: This is great! My hair is more waves than actual curls and I finally realized if I use my crimper a little on the top it helps the waves that aren’t even all over.

Mo Mo: Dear Today show gods... HIRE her the world needs more Joslyn!!

Rebecca Green: I use paper towel (two layers) to dry my wavy/curly hair and it works great! Super absorbent and no frizz. I squeeze dry with PT, apply product, comb, scrunch with PT, and finger curl the locks that need help. Set PT on the shelf to dry and re-use the next day. Voila!

TMD6194LIFE Hess: Love this, I also have curly hair. I have learned that if I comb my hair forward & do these steps. It comes out amazing!!

jillian: Omg JOSLYN was so ENTERTAINING, she needs to be on the TODAY SHOW. she is so dang adorable

Kerri Evans: Cutest hair model ever! Love that curly hair is in finally!!

Emma Pichette: All us curly girls cringing when she takes out the heat tools

Dan G: Joslyn Davis is the best! Love the curly hair journey!!! Not it's taking her to Today.

Charles Cayton: I have wavy curly hair I have a curling wand it works good had it for 5 years it's a cheap one from Walmart it works really well don't have to buy expensive hair curlers to get nice hairdo lol love the hairstyle

Ashley Humann: Joslyn!! How are so famous?? Wow! I love your curly hair!!

XpetraXpazlX: She should stay away from curling irons & heat. Her curls are already damaged from being straightened all the time. Also if you have to use a hair dryer. I would use one that can blow cold air. All heat can be damaging even when used occasionally. Joslyn looks beautiful in this video btw.

Charles Cayton: Thank you for the tip today you girls are awesome and I am new on here

Kelly Palmer: I LOVED this video!!!!♡♡♡

Sarah EL: I'm here for Joslyn ❤️

April B.: Joslyn was great, and can totally see you having a segment on the Today show! Don’t think a curling iron is necessary and might cause damage. Probably looked even better when you went to Devacurl NYC. Other than that this was a good video. She used some products that had silicones. Is this ok? I used to use silicones, they’re not CG, but I think my hair looked better with the silicones.

Emma Ariena: I'm here for this curly hair content! Let's move away from this "all women need to have straight hair" narrative

Charles Cayton: I like Garnier fruit oil in my curly hair it makes my curls pop out lol love my hair I've been letting my hair grow out for a very long time my hair is down to my spine I have blonde hair lol

Bekah B.: I'M DYING! JOS! YOU LOOK AMAZING!

Ilonka Rivera: Simone:do you want super small size or medium 5:12 Joselyn:mhm

Unicorn Ghost: ‘Fairy god mother of the curly world’ doesn’t know the term squish to condish uses curling iron instead of pin curls ‍♀️

Divya Sasidharan: 6:58 so pretty !!!

Charles Cayton: used to use a hair straightener all the time when I was in high school but I stopped using a hair straightener because I have curly hair I used to think that hair straightener was taking my curly hair away used to watch my sister curl her hair when her hair was wet after she wash her hair and her hair was burning their hair was falling out and it scared me so bad to watch her curl her hair that I was like I am never curling my curly hair she had straight hair don't ever curl your hair when it's what you'll lose your hair I was afraid my sister's only get electrocuted

Zoe Little: I love Joslyn sp much!!

Mariam de Oliva Rosado: Rule number 1: don't use heat

Adeline Williams: First she turned the diffuser on and then added the hair which is a frizz maker, then she used an iron.... ekk!

jaea: Why the curling iron?! Ruined the whole video for me.

Juana Triana: Joslyn Davis I would love to see a few DIY.

Kristine Sabate: It felt like the whole process was a waste when she started bringing out the curling iron.

LeiniBree: Idk but she kind of looked like "Weird Al" Yankovic once her hair was completely styled

Lady Bug: This is so awkward. Looking good Joselyn!

Monique Rodriguez: Ew!! No heat! No curling irons. That defeats the purpose of the curly girl method!!!!

Julia Lamanna: You only use one product to get that which is mixed chicks conditioner?? (not including end products to hold it)

Kensington Princess: curling iron ruins curl pattern....

E. S.: The "Mixed Chicks Leave In Conditioner" contains silicones.

Chelsea Pylant: Noooooooooo......DROP THE CURLING IRON

Ferxani: STOP USING HEAT

Victoria Heart: Bad move (Dryer and Curling Iron). 90’s Gel is an upgrade

marblefanboy: I saw this thumbnail and was all like “JOSLYN???”

Yenelly: I don’t know why she used a curling iron if she’s trying to get her hair texture back

Jerry Goins - Novae Money: let's work gave me some ideas for my channel!

Divya Sasidharan: 2:00 wtf !!! She said start it from the bottom n work ur way up n yet she kept tugging jos’s hair from top all over her head. Cringe !!!

Olivia Beaton: This woman had no idea what she’s doing

Kasey Lee: Yessss Jos

Sheikha: The curling iron is a big NOOOO

Nicole Knox: Please work at Today Jos!!!

Tovii: This is the best Joslyn’s hair has looked since being jobless.

Cassie Lynn: Omg JOSSSSLYNNNN

Wæidk Idk: Godmother of the curly world? Excuse me? Idc how much people disagree with me, but black women created this curly girl movement, so a black woman should 100% be the godmother of the curly world. I said what I said and I’ll say it again

fairykelsi: why does she look like weird al yankovic by the end

Sen Annesley: She looks like weird al in the thumbnail

Divya Sasidharan: Wow so natch

Kace Purnomo: Wuutt joslyn on today ??

٪: You don’t have curly hair if you use a curling iron....

Leah -: Lol

Ruffdogg21: Meh. Joslyn looked like a bird.

ASHSID: Her hair is usually unkempt and frizzy

loren. a: Yall talking about " why did she use a curling iron" yall obvs need to lear more about hair

a: first off all sis hair is AT MOST a 2c texture NOT curly. 2nd why the curling iron?
