ABOUT PRETTY SHOULDN'T HURT

"Pretty Shouldn't Hurt" is a short film we created in partnership with Dark & Lovely that challenges the hairstyling practices that have led to hair loss in over a third of Black women. Taking a pain reliever after getting your hair done is not normal, and the notion that braids have to be tight in order to be secure is a myth that needs to be dispelled. We’ve grown up believing ‘the tighter the better’ when it comes to braided hairstyles, and as a result, today’s generation of Black women have seen their moms, aunts, grandmas and even friends lose their hairlines.

OUR MISSION

We’re setting out to eliminate pain from the Black hair styling experience and reduce the rate of thinning and hair loss due to improper styling methods and to do this we're enlisting the support of 100 of the most vocal and influential players in the Black hairstyling industry, including experts featured in the film—natural hairstyling pioneer, Anu Prestonia, Board Certified Dermatologist, Dr. Crystal Aguh, Celebrity Hairstylist & Trichologist, Dr. Kari Williams, and Emmy-nominated celebrity stylist and Dark & Lovely Ambassador, Derick Monroe--all in an effort to create and promote a new standard in taking care of protective styles like box braids, cornrows, wigs, weaves and crochets.

So protective styling can serve a role right, so normal brushing combing of tightly curled hair can lead to breakage so giving it a little bit of time off can be helpful, especially if you're not someone who's going to develop. You know attraction alopecia with just the use of kind of one-time extensions, and so for a lot of my patients who love protective styles. I really want to move them from if they're, in a high-risk, hairstyle category down to a moderate risk. So we just decrease the risk of them developing hair loss. If they have hair loss at a moderate risk, then i do want to move them to something that's low risk, but i try not to be all or nothing. I think that as a dermatologist, it's really important to meet my patients where they are so. I do have a lot of patients. Who'Ll come in and say: okay first things, first, like i'm, not getting rid of braids okay. So let's talk about what types of braids that you can use to minimize hair loss. I think that crochet braids are actually really great. I think that if they're done correctly, they can really apply very, very minimal tension, and so that's a form of braids that i'll often recommend to my patients for some women. I also recommend box braids, just because the base of the hair, that's feeding into the braid, can be quite thick, so kind of more equally distributes tension and is less likely to lead to breakage again and someone with kind of normal resiliency here and not someone who's At very, very high risk of getting hair loss. You

Perma Frost: I appreciate this. My Asian American dermatologist blamed my hair loss on traction bcuz I had cornrows in during our appointment--even though I hadn't done cornrows or box braids in nearly 3 years He basically forbade me from doing any protective styles or using heat: his prescription was loose hair or get locs. Right, cuz doing daily wash n go's would keep my hair from tangling and breaking? I never went back to him. (I want to do locs but I can't afford it yet).

kayne: Lol I need a different solution other then box braids! I'm in this mess because of them

Mulier Bellator: Can you suggest a hairstylist that works with natural hair? I have 1/4 inch of hair loss on the hairline. Thank you

Dorothy Lisbon: Here’s a tip, talk about fast hair growth fortified shampoo to double hair growth.

howcanyoudothistome1: She’s so pretty.

Seeker Of Truth: Um no box braids thinned out my edges which is why I’m here

Michelle Franis: Box braids is not good no wonder she doesnt have no edges. And her hair is then. The knot from the scalp is how you lose your hair once it starts getting matted
