I made this tutorial for a friend, but thought I'd share it with the public. I have been cutting my own hair this way for about eight years now, and it saves me a ton of money! I am happy with the result every time, and each time I do it I get a little bit better.

IF YOU CHOOSE TO FOLLOW THIS TUTORIAL:

- Please understand that you are still taking a risk, as everyone's hair and preference is different. Always start by cutting a small amount, you can easily cut it shorter later.

- I am not a professional hair stylist, and have never gone to school for this. I actually have a Masters of Architecture.

- If you part your hair deeply to one side of your head, you should probably not use this method, as the cut it will produce will not look even under that circumstance. I have a slight side part, and it works fine.

Feel free to ask any questions below!

What you need:

Clean, wet, conditioned hair

Cutting shears of sharp scissors ($10-12 at any drugstore or here on Amazon http://goo.gl/Q2ORh7) My scissors in the video were old, please have sharp scissors!

A comb

A brush (optional, many people recommend you don't brush wet hair, so you can use just a comb if you prefer.)

You can see how long my hair is right now, just to show you what we're, starting with I'm, not gon na cut that much off. I'M just trimming it especially my front layers which bring my face there, just a little bit too long for me. So I'm gon na trim it and show you how you can do it yourself, so I started by just washing my hair and using a conditioner that I left in for a little bit longer before washing out and I've brushed it straight now. What I'm gon na do is brush it into a ponytail at the top of my head, being very careful with how I do that. So I'm just gon na do a fairly loose ponytail and I'm I'm keeping to make sure that the front of my hair is in front and the back of my hair is at the top of this ponytail. I'M just gon na wrap it a few times. It doesn't have to be tight. It just needs to keep all your hair there. Now. What I'm going to do is just continue to brush this out a little bit more. I'M brushing it flat and now I'm going to take just a regular comb and continue to brush it flat. So right now the hair at the top of my head is at the bottom of this ponytail. The hair towards the sides are kind of in the middle, and the hair at the back is towards the top, and you can actually kind of see the line that I cut it at last time and I'm just gon na kind of because it's what I'm going To sculpt it so that it's as flat as possible, now I just have these - are like $ 10 cutting shears from CVS. I take my fingers. I'M just trimming my hair, so I'm gon na take off about an inch and I'm just going to follow this line. Well, you'll notice is because you're doing this you're going to create layers. If I cut my hair more on an angle so that this hair is going to be longer than the hair up front, I'm going to get a tapered v look, which is what I prefer. If you want a more rounded haircut in the back you're going to want to actually cut pretty straight across, but I will I like it more tapered and I'm trying to keep my length so I'm actually going to cut it in a V like this. So I'm literally just going to cut okay, and you can see that I took off about an inch of hair overall, maybe a little bit more on the ends and I'm just gon na comb. It straight one more time and make sure that I have a clean line. My hair is um very fine, so for me, because I'm cutting it straight, it's not going to make that big of a difference in the overall cut. I'M going to take out my ponytails and shake it out. You can completely brush it out if you want to see how much shorter it is, and this really only takes length off to the bottom of your hair so because these layers are shorter, I didn't get to actually take any length off. That that'll be the second part of my haircut, but you can see that I still have a very tapered look. My hair is still very long, but I was able to cut off some of those dead ends and, if you want to you can just do that. If you're kind of scared to do it for the first time, I'm going to show you the second part that I do to get my front hair shorter, which is a little bit more dangerous because you can't go longer once you go shorter. What I do is I take the hair at my crown, so I just take my fingers and part my hair around my crown and section it off, and I'm going to do that exact same thing with this top part of my hair, and for this I'm probably Not gon na even use a rubber band, so I'm going to tie the rest of my hair and back with the rubber band and for this section of my hair, I'm going to again brush it very straight towards the top of my head, making sure again that This part is straight, the front is straight and the sides are coming at the sides and I'm just going to begin to shape it into that flat section. The same way did the other one and for the second time you can see the lining where I cut it out. The last time was approximately here now here you have to be very careful with how you, actually it's Hebert, it's the stronger. You put this way. The shorter your hair is gon na be right in the front of your face, so I really don't need that much length to take it off. I, like it supreme my face right around my chin, so I'm going to follow this line that I used and keep the length towards the back sections. So, as you can see, I'm really just cutting off those very end tips and I'm not creating as dramatic of an angle as I did for the last time, I'm just gon na let this now. You can see that I have once again created that angled line and to check that I like the way that it's for my face, I'm just gon na loosen it out with the rest of my hair and that's a pretty good link for me right here. So I'm gon na dry, my hair and then show you what it looks like after I'm done. Okay, so I just like half dried my hair, I'm too lazy to completely blow dry, my hair, so you can see what it looks like, but I section it in two: it's still very long but notice that it's tapered a lot and I really created some shorter Layers up front, it gives my hair more volume because it drives down when it's long. So this hair in front is very short because of that second crown cut I did and in the back to see the shape very tapered as well into a sharp V, because I cut it as such the steep angle. So if you mess up your hair because of this, I'm really sorry, but I tried

N Ashworth: I have been a hairstylist for 30 yrs and I find the most comprehensive tutorials to cut your own hair are done by people like you in your home. The professional hair videos are ridiculously in-depth to the point of sounding like brain surgery. You did good!

Kimber Ly: I found your tutorial a little over a year ago and have been cutting my own hair this way since. I cannot thank you enough for all the money you have saved me. The results achieved with this method look exactly the same as a ridiculously expensive haircut you could get at a salon. Not to mention, I have rarely left a salon completely satisfied with a haircut. I love it every single time I cut my own hair and it looks EXACTLY how I want it to..every time! Still amazes me, even after doing it for over a year. THANK YOU!!!! P.s. I used to go sometimes up to a year without getting my hair cut because I hated the whole experience, and now I cut it myself about every 6 weeks. You're amazing.

Cheri Ede: Hands down the easiest haircutting instructions ever. Forget saving $50., Jessica has saved us thousands collectively, as well as saving time and frustration with bad cuts. THANK YOU!!!!

Kimberly Marrone: I've been watching this video for years and using it to cut my hair. It's the best one I've ever seen and definitely the most easy to understand. Thank you so much for taking the time to make this video.

Karuna Kat's Yoga: I've never cut my own hair before this, but I followed your tutorial and my hair came out so awesome! My husband says it's easily one of the top 3 ever, and it was free! There is something very empowering about being able to cut your own hair - and look GREAT! :) Thanks!

Chesa Djanelle: I've been cutting my hair like this for 2 years. Great video! Easy, straight to the point and quick! Thank you!

CrogBear: I love this, thank you! I swear I'm so tired of hair dressers doing whatever the hell they want to my hair and not listening to what I want... From now on I'm doing my own hair.

Jessica D: I have been using your method for years, and each time i watch this video i think "i should leave a message." Here it finallly is. This is by far the best tutorial i have come across for easy, quick diy hair cut with style! The first time i used this video, my grandma a retired beautician raved about it! Just last night i cut about 12 inches off, gave myself a shoulder length bob with layers and it worked great. I live in a remote area and thanks to your video, i can still maintain a cute hairstyle! THANK YOU SO MUCH!

Amanda N: I found this video quite a while ago, and when I switched from cutting my hair blunt to doing it this way, I got tons of compliments! I have fine, thick hair, and the layers and tapering give it so much life. Thank you so much!

Loving_Lioness: Thanks so much! I trim my own hair but wanted a look like yours! I really appreciate your no bullshit quick video lol. Some girls try to make too "cute" of a video and have a solid 5 mins of them just talking in the beginning.

zookey93: Just cut my hair using this tutorial it turned out great better than any haircut I have gotten before. It was super easy and I love the result! Thank you.

Kristina N.: Thank you so much for sharing this very SIMPLE yet EFFECTIVE way of cutting your own hair. I used my kitchen scissors and it worked super well. Don't think I will need to go to the hairdresser anymore. Layers are amazing and thanks for explaining the various angles for various results. I loved it! Thanks again.

Kimi Vargas: I'm 25 years old and I can count on one hand how many times I've been to a hair salon in my life, it was just never something we had the money for. I have super long, relatively thick hair, and never occurred to me I could do it myself. This tutorial was quick, easy, and straight to the point, and best of all- it worked! I will definitely use this in the future to trim my split ends, and the soft layers are an added bonus! Thank you!

Mushu's World: your explanation is so straight forward and easy to follow. thank you for this video going to try this tonight. :)

Lauren Carlson: This gave me such beautiful layers! I’ve always cut my hair myself, but never got those lovely layers just right until now, thank you soooo much! ❤️

Cookin' with Bobbi Jo: Thanks for the video! It worked great on my naturally curly hair. The layers really brought my curls to life and I'm all about saving money!

L Rach: I have now used this technique for the second time and still love it.  Some tips: stop and consider the angle you cut.  Remember that the "top" of your hair (if you mold it like she does) should be the longest (that's the back of your hair), so angle higher on the bottom side getting longer towards the top.  Be very cautious with the second ponytail and cut.   It is easy to go too short.  The second time I did this, I combined it with the point cutting I've seen in other videos (scissors pointed straight into the ends, snipping to create a less harsh line) and loved it even more.  Thanks again for this video!!

Marjan Schoorl-van Appeldoorn: I just tried your method on my curly hair and it turned out amazing! Didn't feel like spending 20 buck on the hairdresser for a haircut nobody ever notices, and this is a great alternative! :) Thank you for sharing!

Trin NZ: Brilliant! I realised at work today that my hair was in desperate need of a good trim but didn't want to spend $50+ for a haircut for my rather long hair. Followed your instructions exactly and it turned out amazing! I even went a step further and sectioned a very small part at the very top of my head to get some shorter pieces. Been wanting a hairdresser to cut the top short and leave the bottom long for EVER! Always told "can't do it, your hair is too fine, the base won't be full enough"....well, I just did it myself and it IS full at the bottom and I still got the short layers i wanted in the top to give my fine hair some oomph. Thank you thank you THANK YOU! I did invest $18 in some quality barber scissors. Worth every penny as I can see they will be getting future use thanks to this video.

vegaaasmommy: I just did it...and I love it! Thank you for a simple cut that is fast and cute!!!!!

agent nord: girl , you are a genius... I'm so trying this, I'm so sick having my hair layered in a salon, they never do it exactly as I want it. Thank you for a demo.

jilloora: I agree with you Kathleen. I'm always so disappointed with hair dressers. This takes me 15 minutes and only cost $10 for the scissors from sallys. Totally worth it. This is the most useful of all the diy hair cut videos I watched on YouTube before taking the plunge.

Heather Rogalski: Great video! I found this to be extremely helpful. Thank you for keeping it short and to the point. I used this as a tutorial to give myself a trim at home since I would rather wait at this time to get back into the salons.

Paige michelle: Great tutorial!! Just did it and I love love love the results!! (:

taylor: Loving this! Just cut my hair about three inches and it looks fabulous. Thanks a bunch for such a simple and easy to follow video.

Leo722: Been wanting to cut my long curly hair for a while now and I hadn't done it myself until today. I wanted layers but was afraid of actually doing it myself. After watching this vid I just went for it and it looks great! I liked the tip you gave for the layering and definitely made it easier thanks!

Jess B: Wow! This is so easy and turned out really well. Thank you so much! I’ll definitely keep using this method.

Iris Lats: YOU ARE AMAZING! I just cut my hair following your steps and tips and they look great! It’s super easy too. Thank you so much!

Angela T: I did it for the first time too and it turned out not shabby at all :) Thank You! just what we need for 2020

Rachel Taylor: Just did this myself! Easy and quick! 1st timer and it didn't fail!

Joan Morris: Thanks to you, I finally conquered my fear of even lightly trimming my own hair! I love how it turned out!

Kate Held: Very, very helpful! I never planned to try to cut my hair again, but here we are in covid-19 lockdown, and my hair is driving me crazy! I want something a little different from your style, so I have to think through the what angles to use. It's gotten long enough that I can use rubber bands, and that will clearly be the way to go!

Shannon Moa: I just did this...AND IT TOTALLY WORKED!! So easy, so fast, and FREE! I hate going to the hairdressers as they never get it right and I haven't had my hair cut for over a year. I will be doing my hair from now on, thanks for the vid!

Love: Wow, thanks for sharing! I am definitely going to try this. What's so wonderful is I'm not even nervous about it! My mother used to cut her own hair. I never thought I could do the same, especially with long hair, but, that's about to change! Awesome!Hugs!

xx_chrysalis_xx: Thanks for making this tutorial. I hadn't had a trim in 9 months because I couldn't justify spending the money. My hair was so awful and beat up. It looks much better and healthier now.

AlohaHealth_and_Vitality Kim and Ali: My hair came out great!!!! Super fast and easy!! Love it!

Lisa Correale: Great tutorial! Very easy to follow and I’m really happy with the results- thanks!!

Jessica Brown: I don't comment on youtube videos often but felt the need to say I loved the tutorial, it was really easy to follow and every time I go to the hairdressers and ask them for a 'V shape with loads of layers' they're ALWAYS like "oh yes yes very good" and then it's just a straight blunt cut which I hate! But I tried this at home today and it worked a treat. So Jessica Scwarts, thank you for saving me thousands of pounds on future haircuts (not to mention hours of awkward small talk in the chair)!

mary ann degataire: definitely a cost saver ! Thank you Jessica - I did your tutorial and my hair looks great !!!

Asunakerrigan: You know what? I just tried this... removing around 4-5 inches from my hair because they were thin and not well layered. It's by far the best results I have seen, better than any haircuts I had in salons. To be honest, I decided years ago to cut my hair myself, because I never got great results for the price. Your method is fantastic! I adopt it and it will be easy to maintain in the future! Thanks so much for sharing.

Sally Whittaker: Did mine a couple of days ago , I cut shorter layers & kit came out fantastic

Andrea Gonzalez: Been wanting my hair like this for awhile now . this method is amazing and so easy thanks girl

dreamchasingcat: I tried your tutorial in September (albeit cutting my hair into a much shorter version) last year, and I really liked the result I sent pictures of my (then) new haircut to my friends, bragging about how I cut it myself. LOL I'm thinking to cut my hair by myself according to your instructions again this July! Thank you from Japan!

Courtney Cannon: This is a great tutorial!  My hair is a bit too coarse to form a perfect line like that, so I have a nice, subtly-layered cut now.  I've been cutting my own hair for years, but this method is quite fun.  It also works!

shawty like a melody: I've done this 3x now and it looks so good thanks you have saved me a ton of money!

The Never: I did this, then sectioned just the top half (maybe third) of my hair in the same way and cut another inch off for more layers..turned out perfect. What I always wanted and hairdressers could never gave me. Saved me a ton of money and I will always do it this way from now on. Thank you so much!

Truth Rules: Looks great! I just tried the unicorn cut last week and love it. Thanks for all the details on the tapering. I just did mine straight across, but still got the u shape. I’m trying the v based on how you did the crown. Thanks for the details on flattening it and the angle. My goal is to just cut it myself from now on. I never get the layers I want at the salon.

Nirupama S: Thank you so much!! Your instructions are simply amazing! I love my new haircut! All thanks to you! ☺️❤️

gsheis: I've been cutting my hair similar to this since I was 14! 7 years later I still do it to just trim my ugly ends. But I love the idea how you did it on the second part! I'm about use that right now lol

MsCasanova06: Thank you!! Super easy and I love my results! I regularly cut my own hair (one length) and this is just what I was looking for! Great job!

Mary’s Merry Knots: Thank you so much for this. Your explanation of each step is so thorough. I can’t wait to do this! ♥️‍♀️

Nora Langford: Love your video , conscise and straight to the point ! I am going to try this ! Thanks so much

Orsolya Minik: Very well explained! I’ve been using a similar method to cut my straight fine hair, but I cut it dry in just one go. I like how you added the additional layer with the crown cut. I’ve saved so much time and money over the years by cutting my own hair-I did invest in a good pair of hair cutting scissors though. How often you cut your hair?

LizzyLime: Your hair came out perfect. You explained this well and very easily. thank you!

Alexandra: I was slightly terrified to try this as with my luck it normally would end up wonky... However!!! This actually turned out super easy and amazing! I love the layers this gave me and it was super fast and simple! Thank you! :D

Abreella Jones: Thank you soooooo much! I hadn't cut my hair in forever and I finally did it! Using the exact steps showed in your video! Everyone at school tells me they love my new layers and haircut! I even had a girl in my class ask if I could cut her hair! Thanks a bunch you're a life saver! :)

marshmallow "mix channel": Thank you so much for this brilliant and easy tutorial! I would never have been brave enough to cut my own hair, but I'm so pleased with the results I will definitely use this again, thanks! ❤️❤️

Kim Mitterko: Thanks! I used your tutorial and my hair looks great. The length wasn't changed drastically, and I loved that. So, I did the cut a second time because I wanted it shorter and the results were very nice. Would recommend this to others. Very easy with great results. Thanks again.

Gilmour11: This was very helpful. I really appreciate you sharing this so much!

Heather Alsaka: I personally want to give you a BIG THANKS! I watched several videos and know alot about hair. I love to style hair, that's my passion. Can't get myself to trust scissors because of past experience when young and have been teaching myself to overcome the fear and strive more into cosmetology. This was really not time consuming at all and im a SAHM with three kids and was OVERDUE for a hair cut. This worked perfect to my liking.

Peach Plastic: Thank you! Finally a very well-explained instruction. I love the shape of your hair and you're right, the shorter front layers really suit your face :)

Carrie Buchholz: thank you so much for this awesome tutorial! i have a fear of getting my hair done because of all the horrible hair cuts i have recieved in the past. my hair was extremely long i also have fine hair so layered hair is a must for me i just used your method and I am more then pleased with the out come! I now have the hair style i asked all of the hairstylists that butchered my hair for! im very very happy!

RedCoatStudio: I used this method (your video as my guide) and loved it, I'm about to do it again so I came back to re-watch. Thanks for posting this. Videos from pros get to complicated, so I really like your simple and straight forward approach. Especially for girls with fine hair, such as myself, this really helps make it appear fuller towards the top without losing length.

MDLhu: I followed your instructions very closely and the results are perfect! Thank you very much for sharing this great method!

Carolyn Smith: I like this tutorial! As a young special needs mother I RARELY get out of my home except to doctor's appts with my son and his meducal supplies and trips eat my budget alive. I have cut my own hair most of my life too! I can do full bangs, layers, etc. that look quite well. I have even made my own clothing, accessories, even a few simple makeup products. I feel like people throw rocks at these sorts of tutorials because they've never had to struggle financially in such ways. Just because we aren't well off doesn't mean we can't invent ways to look and feel good about ourselves! Great job! :)

Luna Belle: This worked great! I love my hair. Thank you for this easy tutorial.

Deon Mandelstam: I just want to say that you are the COOLEST! I love how easy going you are about cutting your hair. And it looks amazing! I did what you taught me this morning, and my hair is so full and healthy now. I am so grateful to you that in 5 minutes you saved me literally hundreds of dollars, and hours waiting around in a salon. Thank you so much! I also started using henna for my grays, so I spend like 2 dollars compared to literally $200 a pop. I recommend this too! Keep being you- you are amazing.

Christi Kilman: Yesterday I put my hair in a ponytail, handed my 9 year old grandson the scissors and said cut and don't freak out and don't stop until it's done LOL and he did and did a great job! But I needed it layered so i came on YouTube and learned and it turned out just fine! Thank you so much for posting this! Way better than spending money at a salon for them to push their opinions or even refuse to do short layers in long hair, etc. I'll do it my way at home for free. You are awesome! :D

Barb Redgreen: Great technique! You explained it very well. I just did this with my very thick long hair, and love the result! Thank you!

Lizette Ramirez: Thanks for this video! My hair was crazy long, I got tired of accidentally pulling my own hair so I decided to cut it myself. I love the way it turned out. Thanks :)

G. S.: I used your method and my hair turned out great! I hadn't been to the hairdresser for almost a year and my hair really needed a trim now! It was a little difficult though because my hair is very thick but it sure looks much better :)

Shelli Golden: I LOVE THIS VIDEO!! My hair is the exact same style, length and texture as yours and I was ready to spend over $50 just to get a trim but I figured --why not? what's the worst that could happen? I'm not terribly coordinated but this was very easy to follow and I'm VERY happy with the results!!

Megan Cain: I've been cutting my hair for close a year and it was very time consuming getting my layers, this video just saved me a lot of work. Plus, it looks amazing!

Pippymint: Love it!  Thanks for doing this tutorial!

alarcon99: Thank you so much! I have used the ponytail method before but have always been hesitant of doing the face frame myself. But I did what you said and it looks great! Thank you!

Stardust: THANK YOU. I tried this today on my thick and unwashed hair and It looks amazing. It took less than 5 minutes and both sides of my hair is now equal (were not before the cut). I have tried following a lot of self cut YouTube tutorials and they are really good but a few too many steps not to have remember for the next time and I’ve just been cutting my hair much shorter than I want it. THIS tutorial is fast. Easy. And I can’t imagine forgetting it. And no more pausing and getting wrong, so so simple. I was so close to having to go and pay for a salon cut, which would be expensive, and, I’ve always begrudged paying as I’ve never been happy with their outcome. Now washed, I love this cut. Big thumbs up, again thank you for putting this up on YouTube.

Alicia Lemar: This is extremely helpful! I love how patient and reassuring you were. Thanks for the help! :)

Decor8yourlifeSandi Nagel: Out of the dozens of hair how to videos out there, yours is the best technique! I have used your technique of three different occasions already. Thank you so much for posting this. This is my go to video whenever I need to trim.

Jonteshia Vigil: I am in need of pinching pennies and am starting to dabble in DIY hair grooming & styling...and I found your tutorial! Super easy to follow - I have curly hair and only trust 2 people to cut my hair because it always gets butchered! I was able to...it took me a little bit to just trim my hair but I wanted to be confident I did it right...reshape my hair and still keep the length with your help! THANK YOU SO MUCH FOR PUTTING THIS OUT THERE!!

Sarah Meadows: You have helped me save so much $$ in getting my hair cut! Thank you for posting this video! I have very thick, coarse, straight hair, and your technique works like a charm for me. :)

Janice Jones: Thank you for sharing this, I've been cutting my own hair for some time now, but as I have very thick hair, I need to layer it sometimes you have shown me a very quick way how to do that, I can't thank you enough x

Allison Tracy: I loved this tutorial! It was short, to the point, and simple! Thank you!

Leah McCord: Thank you so much! I hate going to the salon and I always let my hair get really awful looking. I watched your video today and went straight out and bought some scissors! Just finished it and it looks really good! I can't wait to show it off!!

Stephanie Bernal: Just tried this technique I absolutely love the way my hair turned out thanks girl

TeeJay Boyce: I've been using her technique since I found this video 5 years ago. A definite winner for long layers! Thank you!

Dari P.: I had started doing a similar technique a couple months ago after some unfortunate visits to the hairstylist. I had never cut it or even had layers in my hair before, but once I started doing it myself I have found so much confidence in my hair! I finally feel like I have power over how it looks and don’t even mind when I mess up, because I can learn and do better next time. Thank you for showing this video, it is certainly one of the easiest and cool home made haircuts out there I’ve tried

레인: Okay, this is the best and easiest tutorial I've watched and I'm definitely gonna try it! Thanks!

Misty Kennedy: I have been trying to figure out how to cut my hair instead of paying the regular $30 for a trim. This video was easy to follow and my hair turned out great.  Looks like I went to stylist and she cleaned up the ends.  Looks healthier and cleaner.  Thank you for the easy instruction and solution for the ladies at home who want to save $$$.

V Vega: Very helpful. After watching many different videos, I came back to this one because it made the most sense to me for my 'at home' needs. Thank you.

Audi Archer: Omg I love you!! And I love this tutorial! You explained everything so thoroughly and patiently. It’s been a while since I’ve seen someone put effort into being comprehensible

Jojo Johnston: Wow!! I tried this using 3 unicorn sections and I love it!! I actually didn't cut the layers short enough, so I did it twice. Will probably cut it shorter yet but I'm waiting to see how it looks over the next couple of days first. Love that I can cut my hair myself now and don't have to wonder if I'll walk out of a salon with a cut I don't want!!! Thanks!!

Joyee Cole: I watched your video and I cut my own hair today - first time cutting layered hair. And it worked perfectly! I want to say thank you so much for this tutorial.
