Disclaimer : I am by no means a hair professional, but this is just how I’ve always cut my own hair when I wanted some layers. I don’t want to be responsible for any mistakes, so only try this if you’re absolutely certain you want to, but be open to making any mistakes on your first try. If cutting your own hair is something you wanted to try and if it’s you’re first time doing it, it’s best to start cutting off little by little at first. Especially if you’re a little scared, since this is your first time. So instead of cutting an entire inch, start by cutting off half an inch and go from there. That way you can fix any mistakes if any, without compromising too much length, or straighten off any jagged edges, and see if you actually like the cut before continuing. After years of cutting my own hair, I’ve learned exactly what style and how much length I wanted cut off. I now love cutting my own hair.

Hi everyone welcome back to April makeup. We are not going to be doing makeup today, but we are still going to do something beauty related like showing you how I cut my own hair in layers like this. I'Ve cut my own hair for years and basically, for this video I've cut some subtle layers all around and then worked on some shorter layers on my crown and bangs area. So if you want to see how I go about cutting my own hair, let's just jump right into it. So I've already straightened my hair prior, and the very first thing I do is determine how much length I want to cut off here. I'M thinking about 2 to 3 inches next, I'm flipping my hair upside down and I start brushing it thoroughly. So there aren't any tangles once I've got it smoothened out. I grab all of my hair and bring it to a tight and secure ponytail right on top of my head very close to my hairline. This will help give me that layered effect after making sure I've smoothen out my hair as much as possible before putting it in a ponytail. I'M going to very tightly tie my hair, ensuring that it's very secure - and here I'm just timing exactly how long it takes me to cut my own hair. Now I'm bringing that ponytail to the front of my face and grabbing another hair tie and again tying it very tightly to where I want to cut off after making sure that I pulled the hair tie to where I want to cut I'm grabbing my hair cutting Scissors which I purchased from Walmart I've seen these scissors at most drugstores like Target or Walgreens, and then I'm going to cut right on top of the hair tie, which is why I made sure that the hair tie is very tight and secured before cutting. I also want to note that cutting my hair all at once, like this, can be a little tough on the scissors, because it is a very thick cut, which is why it's important to make sure that the scissors are very sharp and that they're meant for cutting Hair, while cutting I'm trying my very best to cut in a straight line as much as possible, now rest in peace, my terrible dead and dried ends. Okay, so now, of course, after cutting my hair, all at once, like that, I'm going to get a jagged and slightly uneven cut, even when I've tried my best to cut straight across. But that's why I like to do any touch-ups or trimming right afterwards. While my hair is still in that tight ponytail, so I'm using my fingers as a guide to even out the cut and I'm trimming vertically with the scissors, which is called point cutting so that it creates more movement without having just the blunt haircut, I'm trimming my Hair until each strand looks as even as possible to me and I'm sorry - I didn't realize my hand - was kind of covering the trimming process, but I hope you got the gist of it all. So there goes that magic, pug Kevin appearing magically throughout my video. So I'm just going to keep trimming and trimming until everything looks evened out to me once I'm done evening out my hair, I'm going to finally bring my hair down to see what it looks like and if I like it, I'm also checking to see if the Length is even to each other on each side, but before I get into that now, I've decided. I wanted to focus on the crown of my head and I'm just dividing that area from the rest of my hair and pulling them back in a ponytail. Again, I'm brushing my hair out before cutting and I'm actually just going to trim once again so that my layers on the crown of my head are a little more even, and it looks like that, I'm so excited I'm almost done now. I'M going to divide my hair right down the middle in the back of my head and bring the two sections right in front of me and just give it a little trim until they're the same length. After checking to say that the longest layer is the same length, I'm just brushing my hair out once again, and now I'm just focusing on my bangs, which is what frames my face. Sectioning it off in a triangular shape, I'm going to again tie the rest of my hair back brush out the part I'm going to cut and just trim it the same way. I'Ve always done it until it looks even so. I'M finally done with the whole cut, which took me about 15 minutes for the whole process, and now I'm just straightening out any kinks from the hair tie and checking out the final look before this. I actually had a one length haircut that I really liked when it was shorter, but now that it has gotten a little longer, it started to feel heavier on my head and the easy solution to this was cutting my hair in layers like it just did so That it all feels much lighter. I also got rid of any dried ends. So now my hair feels much healthier than before. I haven't had a layered haircut in a while, and I am just love - love loving it right now, thanks for tuning in with me an april makeup, please read my disclaimer in my description box down below before and if you decide to try this, and please remember To subscribe like and comment - and I will see you on my next video bye

Vanessa: You definitely did a better job at explaining and doing a simply cut than anyone else I’ve seen in doing this. Thank you!

Cindys cross stitch: I did it. Came out perfectly. I am 56 and never cut my hair before. I cut-off 8 inches. The last hair cut I had was March 4, 2020. Yes my hair is still long, but it feels so much better. thank you

Guinevere J Thelin: I just did step 1 for the overall length (which was almost down to my waist at this point) and am thrilled. My scissors weren't as sharp as I hoped and ended up having to finish it with my sewing shears so I'm going to wait until I get a new pair to do the crown and bangs and tidy up the little point cutting I was able to do. I love the "double hair tie" technique as I can't cut even close to a straight line to save my life and it was very satisfying to pull away the wee ponytail of dead ends. HA! And I am soooooooo envious of your thick, lovely mane. I have what can only be described as super thin, super straight, super fine baby hair. My whole head of locks is seriously just a tiny fraction of your bangs. I'm really not kidding. Thanks for not only making hair cutting look easy but also to be just that easy, too.

pamcake: This was the BEST, most helpful tutorial I’ve seen about cutting your own. And I’ve watched at least 30. Thank you VERY much for posting!

Pien: I tried this tutorial and it worked out so well! I had a straight cut without any layers or bangs but managed to get some layers in it and it looks great! Thanks ! :-)

Kelly James: Wow! Thank you sooo much. Just did this in about 10 minutes and I look like I’ve been to a salon!

LindafromHR: I've been cutting my hair like that for years now it's works every time!

Wind Warrior: You make it look so easy. Thank you!

Lucy in the sky: I just did this yesterday and my hair turned out fantastic! And it didn't take long at all. Thank you so much for posting this.

Sujata Sharma: I have tried and it came very nice. I love layers and this was perfect. Thank you!

A. Armiento: Thank you very much for showing your hair cutting skills. I’m lazy going to hair salon and this is perfect tutorial for me. ❤️❤️❤️❤️❤️

M K: Thank you for this very helpful video. I actually cut my hair for the first time while watching your video as a guide and it turned out great!! I was hesitant to do it at first but i was so happy with the result❤️

notplayinganymore: I have thick hair and usually would get layers but anxiety and lockdown has meant a simple straight chop. You wouldn't believe how light my head feels after using your technique! Definitely will be doing this again. Thanks xx

K C: Best tutorial I've tried so far, thank you so much Your steps were easy to follow and the layers come out really nice

Alison Topalian: I haven't been to salon in about 10 years. This is very similar to how I cut my hair myself. Great instructions

Sara Crawford: I did this the other day (even tho I was very nervous) and it turned out great. I followed some advice I read elsewhere, and made my ponytail a little further back from my forehead so my front layer won't be as short. The layers aren't as dramatic this way, and that's what I wanted. I do need to improve my pointcutting skills but I guess that will come with a little more practice.

VD PEN: Very nice layers. U did it like it's so easy to cut, keep it up. Thank you for sharing the tips

MsPurpleIguana: Thank you for the tutorial. It helped me a lot.Especially in these times.

Feb One: Just followed your instructions a while ago. The results are not bad. Thank you for sharing your video!

Dan Wilson: Having tortured my hair with colourants, strippers and colourants again, when I last went to the hairdressers at the start of December I was insistent that only a certain amount got cut off, but the new ends were still terribly dry and broken. Yesterday morning while washing my hair, half of the ends knotted up so badly that I ended up trying to untangle it and then basically breaking the knot off, resulting in much shorter hair on one side. Tonight I found your video and took the plunge... and it's come out perfectly. It was traumatic to cut, wondering if I was making a huge mistake, but that wasn't the case: the bad ends are gone, it feels so much more like actual hair again and the layers are fab. It's now about the same length as yours. I'm going to grow it longer again but try and not be so mean to it. Anyway, thank you for such a clear, helpful video! It was as effortless to do as you made it look, so thank you!

Gloria76: I love this. I actually tried it n it came out pretty good. I have natural curls so with the layers and all I totally look different. More younger. Thank you.

Pauline Li: I watched half a dozen videos on DIY layers and your video seemed to be the clearest, simplest and easiest. I followed your instructions (except I had wet hair) and my hair turned out exactly the way I wanted it. Perfect! Thank you so much!

Malinda Eckert: Thank you for this very thorough, and SIMPLE tutorial, thank you!

Shruti Sonawane: I followed your instructions....I'm really happy with my hair..it turned out just the way I wanted

Oodles_of_Noodles: You did really well with that. I've done it a few times now and it is usually good enough for me. I took a bit too much off last week, but it will grow quick enough :)

Crisna Shannon: Thank you so much!! You explained so well and now I feel confident to be able to cut my own hair!! Thanks again God bless.

Amrapali Lokhande: Omg! Such a good video I ever seen. I cut my hair at home with this guide and it turned out really well, I’m amazed with the result. You are brilliant and Thankyou very much for this tutorial. I’m happy ‍♀️ Very simple, unique and time saving haircut.

Abigail Wiriaatmadja: Great, easy to follow, no nonsense instructions. Cute dog too! Love how s/he was licking you at the end demanding attention!

Kiane Keo: i just cut my hair using your method and it turned about beautiful...i’ve cut my own hair for past 4 yrs now and won’t be going to a stylist. this method is the simplest

rhodora horgan: This is the easiest way I have seen. Great job!

Maribel De Leon: I love how you made it look so easy. I saw your video and i went ahead and cut mine. My hair is curly so its much harder to manage it, but i did and i loved the results. Thank you girl. You have beautiful hair.

sgmoney2747: Tried this and it turned out perfectly! I have natural curly hair so I always cut mine while it's wet, it's so much easier that way. And if you have curly hair you should already know but just in case, cut it a little longer cuz when it's dry it shrinks. Other than that I did just how she showed and when it dried it was still perfect! I'll be doing myself all the time now because not only does it save money it also saves me coming home crying from a cut I can't stand, lol.

Bumblebees Paradise: Genius technique, I just cut 5" off length, gave myself long bangs, and cut layers. I used my cutting scissors, thinning shears and 3 rubber bands. Turned out great and it was FREE!!!

NP: Simple, easy and best !! Now i know how 2 cut my own with cool results. Thanks dear !!

I also was hesitant to cut my hair as well I've watched a few others but they weren't right for me by way it was explained & showed... Your instructions are so easy, simple to follow, Ive been laying my hair your way the last 5 years I just layered my hair again this morn.. Nearly 5 years ago was the first time I've ever cut layered my hair till I came across your video, I'm deaf so it's really hard for me to listen & read captions while I'm cutting my hair, With your video i don't need to listen to your instructions on how to? All I need to do is watch & mimic how you show it on your video.. I'm so surprised at how easy laying hair can be? I have long hair nearly down to my waist so u probably saved me a few hundred bucks going to the hair dressers over the years? & the layers looks great! Deftones G: Best tutorial ever..just did my hair and love it..

Britt Burt: Great vid!! I saw one early that took longer but she had really long hair like down to her butt so this would work better with shorter hair where you don’t need as many layers

Lianne Hepler: Thanks for the vid! How critical is it to straighten your hair first?

Reeh : Your so talented i love how you cut your hair on your own thank you for this tutorial video

Xochitl E. Muñoz: I love the end result and whole method you used. I'm looking to cut my hair a LOT shorter. Do you a method that will work for above the shoulder length?
