Brad Mondo makes this look so easy so I have to try it. My long hair is boring and needs some fun movement.

Part 2 will show the finished straight version with flat iron.

I'M going to attempt to do the brad mondo guide, to putting layers in your hair or a shag cut. Put your ponytail right on top of your head brush it straight up and he advises to take a piece from the back and place it up to make sure you don't cut the length off. So i have a good inch that i'm going to cut off and these are not kitchen shears. Here we go and i have really thick hair, so i just want to take some time cutting it here. I have had long hair for a while now and i love having it layered, but it's hard to do that. If you don't know what to do this, i have never done before. So i'm excited to see how it's going to turn out and it's still long and it's still got length. I could probably go another inch. Let'S do it. We want shag. Let'S do it. Oh my god. I'M gon na check one more time, yeah all right. Let'S just do half half an inch, tell you what buying some hair cutting scissors was the best thing i ever did. Thank you. It works so much better. If you have a good scissor, all right, that's it! So, let's take it out, see how it looks. So i'm going to go ahead and dry it and style it and see. Oh, wait, there's another thing so to make it nicer. I think we're supposed to take a portion of the bang and over direct it to the other side. Let'S see and just clean it up, oh my gosh. I don't know if i want to cut all that: that's okay, maybe just a little okay. Let'S try the other side to a little triangle and over direct this over directing thing is kind of scary. To me i know it works when i watch your videos, but i haven't had a lot of luck with that: okay, okay, pretty make it pretty okay! So back in a minute and voila, i think it came out really nice there's lots of wave. I have um. Naturally, wavy hair just a little bit, so i scrunched it and dried it and it looks really nice. It falls nice, it's got shape, it's got layers and i can't wait to see what it looks like with the little curl to it. The beachy waves and we'll see like it, i have my bangs, which sometimes i like. Sometimes i don't so anyway - nice, it works nice job brad. Thank you, and here is the a quick beachy wave look just quick, uh flat iron curls. I think it came out really nice lots of body lots of movement. I like it, it's pretty. How easy was that? Oh, my gosh i'll be doing it again.

Graphically Speaking: I cut hair for over 20 years and this method is literally fool proof…if you do exactly what she did. Be sure to leave a piece out of the center back bottom for measuring purposes and so you don’t lose any length. Even if you don’t do the side over directing, it will still come out nice and give you perfect layers. Make sure your pony tail is on the very top of your head like she did and you can’t mess this up. Good luck

Laura Olivares: The first time I cut my hair by myself was 7 months ago and this lady was my inspiration, because I was so tired to go to the salon and they don’t do what I ask. I love my new hair style!!!

Faith Reyes: Girl! I just did this last week and it works! I have naturally curly hair and my curls love the layers! Great job!

Lillith: I did this a couple weeks ago and absolutely love it. Took off probably 6-7 inches. This cut was so simple!

CragRaven: I've been cutting my hair like this for 20 years. I have naturally curly hair which is useful, if I get it a little bit uneven, the curl hides any major mess ups. Nicely done!

Heather Dawn Harris: Beautiful!! Thank you for this video. I have cut the front of my hair so that it gives me more volume around my eyes and brow. I love what I did! But the back needs to be layered and I just didn't know how I could do it myself. I had a "professional" do a bit and she did a HORRIBLE job! Luckily, my hair grows fast (even at 77!). I am now going to follow this recipe and have it done the way I want it! I also have natural wave that I love, but it has not been coming out the way it is right now. Looking forward to the result.

Mrs BabyCakes: I did this to my hair only I took off a good 3” as had got very long, and it came out amazing! I have super curly hair and I have lovely curls now with pretty layers.

Dee Ski: Been doing this for ages. Never realized he made a video for it. I just did it because as a kid I was told perfect layers were formed by hanging upside down. I figured ponytail on top was as close as you could get on your own.

Dee Gralak-Roe: I cut my hair this way as well. Quick, easy and looks lovely.

Janet Dawson: Wow - it looks great and looked do-able for the average person - I'm always hesitant to trim or cut my own hair because I have no cosmetology experience.! You are such a pretty woman, anyway, and this new cut enhances that. Love the movement and " playfulness" of the style.

Janis Young: I did this last week and I love it! I did it again today to take about another 1/2 inch off and trim my bangs, and it turned out great. Thank you, Brad! You are my hair guru!!!

Pati Giddens: I hate to say this as a retired hairdresser from years ago I learn how to cut that shag like 52 years ago. And always looks really pretty!

margaret davis: I have been considering a shag as we used to call them. I have cut my hair before using that trick and it works well. My hair is long so I'm good to make a mistake. Your cut looks great

Mellie: Can't believe I've only just found this now... this is literally what I try to describe to hairstylists that I want, but they never understand what it is I'm talking about... Literally ran to bathroom to do this and I'm so happy, the step to cut the hair towards front after makes the world of difference too. Thanks so much for this!

Alexandria McCarthy: Seeing this done on someone with a side part sealed the deal for me. I can't wait to do this to myself lol

PaigetheMoonChild: I tried this a bit ago, I only took maybe 3 inches because I was scared lol and my hair is already shorter than I'd like but I loved the outcome. I have curly hair and it shaped it and volumized it so amazingly. Edit: I just did it more yesterday I couldn't help myself lol and it's even better. I have so many layers now and it tapers into a perfect V, very 80s rock looking, I love

Morgan Conrad: This looks beautiful! What a simple process for a perfect look. Brad has the best tips!

Alexis Valere: Absolutely gorgeous & you did such a great job! Loving that style!

Caroline Almeida: I also followed his tutorial and yeah, it super works! You look beautiful with this haircut :)

AL Darling: I just watched your video and I went for it and cut my hair. I love it! Thanks for the inspiration and motivation !

AJ: I have a question. So when you leave the piece in the back out of the ponytail, are you cutting the ponytail to the same length or just a little longer/shorter? It was hard to tell. This turned out so nice. Edit: I found his video! Thanks so much my shag sister!

Tina Vieira Cartonagem: Muito bom! É exatamente assim que eu costumo fazer! Ficou linda!

LEE: Looks great. I did it a few weeks ago and it's a simple easy thing to DIY for a really nice look.

Karen Berner: Ok Mary, you made it look easy. I'm about to try. Doesn't look like you can go wrong with this method. I do deep part my hair because I always have one side that looks better then the other when styling but we are not a symmetrical anyway. Love your beautiful hair and beautiful personality. Thanks for the share.

Venus Sunshine: Very pretty!! I’m definitely gonna do this now lol ‍♀️ Brad would be so proud of you & your technique! ✂️

Katherine Rose Art: I've been cutting my hair like this for the past 5 or so years. Haven't tried the over-directing the bangs bit however.... I usually do two pony tails though. one straight on top and one further back.

Decima Davis: It looks great! I’ve been watching his tutorial with scissors in my hand for months. Im going to wait until I have good scissors though….your comments sealed the deal! Thanks for sharing!

Sherry Arflin: I used to cut my hair like that in high school. By where you place the ponytail you can pick more layers in the front are as you’ve got it all over. This was in the 70’s. I loved it .

Jada Hamilton: I DID IT TOO Even my grey streaks look awesome with this cut, and my waves disguise any oopses-win win!!

Allison Fisher: I did the same thing, thank you Brad, and it turned out great. Really brings it my natural curls

Thankheavenforseveneleven: Love this! I’m going to give it a try, thank you!

ginger cox: I’m in a long phase right now but I used to use this technique all the time. Looks great.

Lovey: It looks awesome, great job! Love your hair and texture.

Sandra Gambrel: Farrah Fawcett-Majors cut her hair that way years ago. Great DIY. You did an excellent job on yours. Would like to have seen what it looked like before you put it up in the ponytail. Thanks for sharing.

Francesca Castiglione: Super cute! I’ve had this same hair style before and loved it

Joni Jones: I just might try this. Looks interesting and easy. Thanks for sharing.

Jo Frances: Wow well done, your braver than me, I only managed to trim my hair in lockdown last year and once this year. Your hair looks lovely ♥️

starstruck: I just cut my hair like this the other day. I didn't know it was it a thing till now lol but after I cut the top pony tail then I pulled all my hair to the back at the bottom of my neck and cut it to make the back even. It looks great

Laurie Mooney: I've been cutting my curly hair this way since Covid hit and it works great! I'll probably never go beck to a hair dresser.

Colleen In Prayer: Looks lovely. I was thinking of having layers as I have naturally curly hair.

Jamie Enderlin: I layer my hair in a odd but really easy for me. I flip my hair over the front bent over. Then section choose to my shoulders take both sides and cut, next section little further out cut both sides little longer then front end in front cut little longer then last. Works good every time!!

lizzypepperoni: Beautiful job! And you have such a sweet personality. I loved this!

Paula Shaw-Madrigal: Looks great! Easy to do.

Cristy: Beautiful! Came out great!

Michelle Jane: Ignore the naysayers, this looks fab on you! I hope Brad sees this ❤ And twenty thousand views, woohoo!!!

Charlotte Gean: It turned out great! You have beautiful hair and are so blessed that it is thick!

Lisa Saxon: It’s lovely Mary…I cut my own hair from when it was longer and even now that it’s very short. I don’t know how I manganese to do it so well even to this day, lol. At the moment it’s a pixie cut with ever so slightly more length at the back then number 2 from neck up that that longer length. I do my own blinding streaks also…mostly the cuts n colours work out really well there’s on,y a few times it wasn’t quite how I exactly wanted but wasn’t far off. This time I’ve gone way shorter at the front n op top than I have ever before…argggg what was I doing. I’m so addicted to cutting my hair I just can’t leave it be. I just don’t want to look too manly having short hair,,, if you get my drift I want to attract guys not chicks…. You’ve got gorgeous ouch hair, I kinda wished at times I could let mine grow to maybe shoulder length n have a shaggy Bob, asymmetrical but it so hard getting past that gross stupid looking stage that I just instantly cut it.

Tina Frick: It looks great! You are so pretty! I’ve done this before and screwed it up using my craft scissors ✂️ good job buying hair shears!

Sonia Chavez: Nice and easy to do ‍♀️I will try it thanks

DeBorah Beatty: We used to do this when I was in high school 50+ years ago! But we had the ponytail at the hairline. Worked great!

Amanda Russell: It turned out so cute!!! Thanks for sharing!

Lynn Selmser-Wilson: I did it and my hair turned out great. Thank you for the tutorial. I know how to do my own hair now. Whoop! Whoop!

Mary Monaco: Never mind the negative people! You did an awesome job! I absolutely love it! Beautiful!

Siamesemama1: Gorgeous. Great cut, Mary! Doing mine tomorrow & I wanna thank you for your courage, now I feel courageous & oh well, hair grows if I have one of my infamous hand spasms, lol. Sad on how many commented that their hairdresser "doesn't cut the cut they want"! I'm there too, even w a picture in hand...

Jesus Saves: Looks gorgeous! Hopefully my attempt looks this nice

Carolyn Dubois: Did this to my daughter last night came out great!

Latachia _2: It turned out great and the bangs really look nice!

Lisa ¤: Thank you!!! This worked beautifully.

Brenda Lowery: Wow! Looks very professional

Buford C.: I'm surprised! It turned out really nice. Looks great on you. Will try myself. Thank you.

Marco Padilla: I really have to day something, this is by no means a shaggy hair cut, I did a shaggy hair cut about 4 days ago in a salon I showed the stylist and she did it perfect, I told her to do a full set of bangs and the sides some fringe and the back she started with more on the top and as it goes down less hair less volume and the final layer was chopped into kind of even hair, it came out beautiful just like in hippie era, by the way the picture that you see is my husband I'm a girl.

Dakiniwoman: I am amazed... it turned out really well... Thanks for being so brave and for sharing...

MommaDMS: I've been cutting my hair like this for years to save money. Didn't realize it was a "style"! lol

melinda montana: I cut my hair and my daughter's hair like this...we love it!

m00nSickn3ssX: This haircut its so cute and looks good on everybody!

tsreiki: I have been trying to get hairdressers to do this cut on my hair for decades! I used to have it styled this way in the 80's and loved it, perfectly suits my wavy thick very fine hair.. but I can not get anyone to do it, they just dont understand what I want.. my hair is too thick and I have little hands, its just too hard to do it myself.. please hairdressers, start doing this cut again

Carla Pogson: Thank you thank you !! It works, I am just so happy, I actually got the cut I wanted, ❤️❤️

Bev M-L: You’re blessed with beautiful, thick hair!

Jean Sullivan: Thank you. I hve been wanting to trim my hair and now I feel comfortable now that I watched you. Thank you for being brave . And I bought hair cutting shears as well.

Barbara Romanowski: I cut off 5 inches and it looks great. Thanks Brad. Cutting off 1/2 really does nothing.

Anne Theurich: Looks great! I’m not so good at doing my own hair. My stylist did finally get me a pair of scissors & showed me how to do trim my bangs. He got tired of fixing my “attempts”! I still just go to the stylist!

Ann Rae: I've been cutting my own naturally curly hair since high school and I ' m old now..I cut it very short about 2 inches all over..this made me laugh because you cut hardly anything off..it's still just long hair...it would of been great to see 6 or 7 inches off it.

Barbara Ford: Thankful!! It worked ❤

LadyOrion2012: Its is great to be able to do this from home as I have a number of times. But one time I went to a hair dresser for a different cut and style... the girl proceeded to quickly put my hair in a pony tail and before I knew it she made 1 cut, let my hair down and said she was done...2 minutes...$30.00...kid you not. No wash, no blow dry or styling I responded with "You know who else is done? ME! Never coming back here again!" There's nothing wrong with doing this at home oneself...but I pay hair dressers for different cut and styles, if all hairdressers cut like this, then there's no point in going to hairdressers and paying$$$ since this type of cut is easily done at home.

Cynthia Bustamante: Wow it came out really beautiful!

linda dickson: Just did it last night, so easy and awesome results!

carol lowe: this is a layered cut, not a shag. to get the shag (short layers to long with the angle in the front/sides), you would cut the pony at an angle from front to back-short to long. when you take it out, it will fall with angled sides and perfectly layered. leave out hair around the hairline if you have thin hair so that the bottom doesn't become wispy (see-through).

Patricia Plancon: Wowww, great job! It looks so good!

zomggcats: looks gorgeous on you!!! amazing job! and thank god no kitchen scissors lol!

Beverly Kingrey: I use to keep mine cut like that when I was younger and I loved it

Raven Vargas: For it being your first time doing it you did an amazing job it looks so good on you

Smooth Light: You are so brave. Love how it turned out!

Lola: Looks Fabulous!!! ‍♀️

Melissa Mphande: I'm impressed by both her hair cutting ability and her clear armpits. How do you get your pits that clear? I'm serious.

Cleusa cândida de jesus: Parabéns ficou lindio amei

Cindy Gardner: I just did this a few days ago and I love it!!!

cactustree505: great job. I love Brad's videos

Manda Piee: You have the same haircut as my mom! Also thanks for sacrificing your hair to see if it worked xD

Buckiann's Creations: Looks great...That is considered long layers though, not at all a shag which would only be about 4/5 inches long on top...It came out good and Ive been cutting my own hair for about 30 years, everything from a Asymmetrical bob,to long layers,bangs..the Amber Lit, the Jennifer Aniston.. Easy once you get the hang of it..

Janas Freiheiten: Thank you, great tutorial!

Angie Jeep: I have cut my hair like this for years. I always get compliments

4 YAHUAH: Thank you for sharing your hair looks great.

Tamara Morton: It looks really pretty.

Chelle7: Most people do that first cut wrong. Mondo has them bring the ponytail forward, but they just lift it up. Anyway, can't go wrong. In the 70's we did the same thing - hung our head down and cut it off straight for a shag.

Elizabeth Howard: Love this method!! TY so much!!

Ruth Kendall: I’ve been wanting to do this and thanks to you now I do!,

Tasha Olive- Olive Branch pottery: Yes, an old DIY method, but if you can hold your hair without the band, you won't have to go back to even up the sides...if not try doing the same thing, but upside down.

Clara: Thanks for the test I was waiting for someone to try this :D I wonder if it looks good on straight hair because mine is straight and I don't want to curl it every day if I do this.

Serendipity: I'm very curious how this would look on someone with super straight hair - would this technique still work. Curls have a way of bouncing into place and can hide sharp edges, etc.

Kim: I did that. I didn't realize it would be layered but it turned out ok!
