In this video I explain the clear difference in results with highlights, balayage, and the highlighting cap. We often thick of these things as colors but the reality is that these are application methods. Knowing the difference and what they can do for your hair is helpful in determining what you might want at your next salon appointment or when choosing your next hair color. I have also been getting so much questions on the highlighting cap so I though it was time to include it in a video. Hope this video was helpful. Thank you for watching.

Hi everyone welcome back to my channel today's video. We are going to be talking about the difference between a balayage, a highlight and a highlighting cap. I feel like highlighting caps, have gotten a lot more attention in the last couple of months, and i figured i would do a quick in depth of video on essentially what each method actually is and which one is right for you. So the three categories that we're going to be talking about are not actual colors. They are application methods and i do want to distinct between those two things because i feel like that is something that does tend to confuse a lot of clients, and this is important to know even if you're going into a salon. So you can get exactly what you want. I can't tell you the amount of time someone has come in and said that they want to balayage, and then they show me a picture of something. That'S really contrasted. So when you want something a little bit more contrasted, that typically is a highlight now say you don't want to highlight all the way to the root and you do want softness at the root and that's why you said balayage. You can still achieve that with a traditional highlight, because you can always do a root, tap or a root smudge and bring that root down as far as you would like. So one little tip for if you normally don't get what you want when you go into the salon or you're going into a new place, i think one of the most important things instead of naming application methods, stick more to describing the color you want like. I want lighter, i want darker, i want cooler, i want more golden that way. The hairdresser can then choose what is best for you and sometimes when someone comes in and says, i want a balayage that gets the hairdresser thinking and sometimes there are better methods of getting you to your desired hair color. So now, let's briefly go over each application method, so you have a good understanding of what they are and what they do. So, let's start with a classic highlight method. This is when you weave out sections of hair that will be lightened so being able to isolate the hair in a piece of foil. So we can see exactly where the highlights going and because we're isolating that piece of hair in a foil you are able to get a greater lift because of the heat that will be conducted inside of that foil, thus giving you that more contrasted look. So this is great for if you want a maximum lightness, so whether you want to be more of an all-over blonde and you want a huge pop of brightness highlights - is your go-to also if you want big pops of brightness, but you still want a lot of Contrast so, rather than focusing on how you want the root to look and whether you want a lived-in look versus a very fresh highlighted, look think more about the amount of blonde you want and the contrast that you want. And then there is balayage and i feel like this word gets thrown around for good reason, because balayages are absolutely gorgeous. I do think that this application method gets used so many times when you initially want a highlight. So the word balayage in french means like a sweeping motion like a painted on very effortless artistically placed kind of motion, and traditionally a balayage is done without foils, meaning you're, just freehand painting, where you want to see brightness now, if you're not isolating the hair, and This is where hair gesture started getting really creative and they would do the plastic wrap, but the second that you need to do that. That means that you want extra lift, and this to me is one of those cases that why not just do a more traditional highlight you can make those pieces of brightness as thick or thin as you'd like and you're isolating the hair, meaning you get greater brightness And you don't run the risk of the lightener bleeding onto other sections of hair that you don't want to lighten so freehand painting when there is no foil or plastic wrap. The hair is breathing as it's processing, so you get less lift. Traditionally, a balayage is not meant to be super contrasty supposed to be really sunkissed and almost warm, and then lastly, is the foiling cap which basically inspired this video, because i've gotten so many questions over the last couple of months regarding this cap. So basically foiling caps. Have been around for the longest time, and then they got a really bad wrap because of the kind of stringy kind of very thin highlight. Look that it gave at the roots the second that a softer root came in. That style was out. But now that we have access to amazing products and much of better education on this, where we always root, tap or root, smudge a client after basically any lightning service using a highlighting cap. As long as you do, a root tap on after can actually look super beautiful and give it almost this thin effortless baby light. Look because we've eliminated that issue, which was that kind of stringy root color. Now let me explain who this works, for so, if you're starting off with virgin color, meaning your natural color - and this doesn't mean i had highlights a year ago, and then i dyed my hair back to my natural color. That is still not your natural color. You have just artificially reached your previous color, so if you have virgin hair, meaning there's no lightener left in your hair, if you have had any color, it was over five years ago and you're left with your 100 natural hair color. Doing a highlighting cap is great for you so long as you root smudge, it can be a beautiful color now. My issue with this method is that when you're pulling the highlights out of the cap, you have no control of what piece of hair you're picking up. So when i'm highlighting with foils, i can see exactly where there's a highlight, and i can avoid that piece and grab a new section to add a brand new highlight now. If you have any previous hair color on your hair or any previous lightning service, you will have pockets of light underneath and when using that highlighting cap when you're picking out the pieces of hair, you don't know what you're picking up. So the issue is after having all the pieces picked out, you will have some that are highlights and some that are not. That is already leaving so much room for disaster, because technically you can only apply one formula all over. So if you formulate for the dark pieces, meaning i want to lift the dark pieces to be perfectly blonde, that's doing a disservice to your existing blonde pieces, because now that formula is way too strong for previously lightened hair. But if you formulate something that's way too delicate, it's going to be fine on your previously blonde pieces. But it's not going to lift you at all enough on your dark pieces and you're going to be left with probably a lot of warmth and unwanted tones. So basically, it's almost a foolproof way. If again, your base is naturally one color, but the second you have any other color going on underneath it can end up being a huge problem and you're absolutely not going to get the beautiful results that we all see on tick, tock and in doing virtual consults, Which i started offering a couple of months ago, which is where you can book out a slot of time where you and i can consult, and i can help you with any at-home hair formulations and the question about highlighting caps, has come up a lot. And i understand because it does eliminate, you know the hand, eye coordination with the foil and a comb, and it does make that process so much easier. I tend to have a huge issue and you can't expertly decide which piece you're lightening and which piece you're leaving behind, and it's the only method that you don't really have control of how thick or thin you want the highlights and then from these three methods. Of course, there is, like i mentioned a couple of times: there's the root smudge, there's a root, tap and, of course, all over toning to achieve your absolute perfect tone, all right guys. I hope this video was helpful next week, i'll be coming at you with a hands-on tutorial, where i will be doing hair on an actual client and sharing one of my absolute favorite techniques and favorite formulas. If you're here for the hair stuff come by on saturdays, and if you want a little more me and behind the scenes and what's going on, go ahead and check out my vlogs that are uploaded on wednesdays, also super exciting, it is almost fall which will be The launch of my learn to live and look luxe master class and i'm going to start sharing a little teasers so make sure to follow me on instagram. I love you guys and i hope you have an amazing weekend. Bye, guys,

allen sinclair: Okay but can we talk about how perfect the color theme of this video is? The background color, the color of your clothing, your hair color, your makeup—everything is just well coordinated and complimenting and it’s so exciting yet calming to watch. Love it!

alexandra wenzig: Hi Silvia, I miss getting my hair done by you SO much. I didn't do anything to it during the pandemic and tried a few new places since then. Nothing compares to the beautiful, natural, buttery blonde you gave me. Wishing you all the best with the new chapter of your life!

Renee CA: I love these teaching video's, they're so informative! I do want to add that the cap can be painful! I used to get this done (or do it myself) years ago and started just foiling because my hair is super thick and long-pulling that through hurts. Also, as you said, it ended up being a strange, too thin, and sparse lift.

Crystal Neel: I am a former hair stylist & I learned to ‘highlight’ in the early 80’s before foil was even an idea. I only do my own hair now but I prefer the cap all day long. Probably because it’s how I learned…foils get on my nerves. Because I’m good at using the cap I can pull thick or thin pieces & can tell where I’m pulling from. I also use the cap to add lowlights at times as well. I also know which pieces not to overlap of the pulled out pieces… I think it’s all in technique originally learned. But I will say that the popularity of the grown out root is a game changer! I don’t have to do any of it as often with root smudges & taps.

abi Hoffman: Make a video on highlight cap on a client or doll from beginning to end and show us what you would do exactly. I love your videos! And I love how you did your hair.

Barb B: I remember when my mom used a highlighting cap when I was little. She swore it looked like spaghetti had been dumped on her head and quickly went to the grocery store to get box color. If there was only YouTube back then, she needed these videos. She goes to the salon now, but always went cheap on herself for us kids back then. Any tips on how women in their 60s with shoulder and shorter length hair can improve their color?

Jetcitygrl Jewels: Your hair is so gorgeous! I have had all methods of highlighting to my hair. I have had it pulled thru the cap, I had foiling done for many years. I tried the beautiful balayage once. For me, since I am not a hairdresser but have been around and worked in a salon for years. I have been doing my own for years now. It is mainly due to a lack of funds. I am afraid to try to foil or balayage. I pull my long hair through a cap. I would definitely like to get the courage and learn other methods.

Tania B: Hi Silvia, by chance I stumbled upon your tutorials about 1-2.5 years ago and started educating myself on all the various techniques and coloring products you have been doing tutorials on. Especially as the pandemic started, I started watching through your old and weekly tutorials on color techniques. Redken shades EQ products are not easy to find here in Switzerland for personal use, but through your tutorials, I managed to find myself fantastic colors, learning how to do low lights and highlights via free hand techniques on my dark hair based on your information, I managed to find the right method and hair glosses without damaging my hair too much. It is the way, you describe and explain things step by step that I appreciate and find really interesting and I still love going to my hair colorist and we are always on the same page. Only looking at your videos made me appreciate the services your colleagues do even more as I now know myself how much effort and creativity lays behind all that work that is done within hours to make a client happy and sometimes it isn’t being appreciated enough, when coloring does not turn exactly as a client would wish for. Now I have a real understanding on why the same color turns out differently on each hair…So thank you for sharing your expertise and inspiring amateurs like myself out there to dare to try things in without that experiment turning into a catastrophe !

Nicole VonW: Great video! So I went in for the first time in ten years going brunette to golden blonde! I came in wanting to highlight my hair to golden blonde. She did not recommend this. She recommended balayage. I love it bc I love the dark left and I don’t look washed out! However I wanted originally to do highlights bc I was worried about how they retouch and overlap. I’m so scared now as I want to keep my hair long and healthy! I hope bayalage is the healthiest route, and she can just retouch roots!!!

Iris T: I was just watching your low light video this morning. I love watching your techniques. I want to try highlighting on my own hair once my current botched salon highlights grow out a bit. Thanks for the tips

Julia Ru: I love your hair in this video. Would be great to see how to achieve this look at home.

sooz hart: PERFECTLY EXPLAINED! You are spot on & super helpful! Thank You for “You”. ❤️

Michelle Evans: Hello Elle. I have been watching your channel for a while now. I have decided to try Esalon based on your videos. Wish me luck! Looking forward to seeing if I can pull this off on my own!

Bev Evans: Love your very clear explanations. Would ver much love to see you do a root smudge. Will be following. Thanks, Beverly

frazee1: i have bad emotional scarring from the caps used on me back in the day lol i always came out like a striped tiger lol i was so glad when other methods came about ! your hair looks fabulous!

Melisa Batmaz: Hi Silvia! Could you please tell what toner you've used on roots, mids and ends? Also: my roots start to get really golden (i'd say a level 9) whilst my mids and ends are very pale yellow (level 10). I would really like to tone them down to the color you have.

AgathaVelvet: Good explanation on the difference between highlights and balyage.

Vïëwër: Thank you so much for this info! So helpful❣️ Stay well XOXO

P M: I've totally been watching you for a couple years now, always awesome tips and advice! I love you back!!

denise m: Thanks so much for the cap chat I tried this 2 times but with long hair omg it was so painful. I managed to do some small diagonal baby lights after watching one of your vids with the box of ‘Bblonde’ in my cupboard. So helpful to understand the difference between box color and bleach/developer! Now I want to touch up with some brighter ones and may need a consult but live in the UK... congrats on the bump

Nicole VonW: I love you hair! I even love the little profile pic, more! It looks like what I just got done!!! ❤️

Muck mucker: So from your last video a week ago with root touch up and Good Dye Young highlights to this video, you added more highlights and possibly toning - but it’s definitely different and very pretty…would love to know what you did - subtle but pronounced at the same time

Hannah Yi: I love your hair in this video! How can I achieve that look?

Tiffany: Is there such a thing of wanting golden and cooler tones of blonde in your hair?

Victoria Colville: Very interesting and good educational video. Thank you so much

99 Bannanas: This was VERY helpful. Thank you!!

Whispering Truth ASMR: Oh man. I would never use a highlighting cap again. Forever scared with tiger stripes from the 2000s. In fact, I'll never do my own hair again. I've ruined it too many times

Tamara Castillo: Caps are “Old school” but SO Amazing I think Bc the lift is all at once & so Even!

Sabine Kreuz: Dear Silvia, you look stunning. The color of your hair just looks perfekt. I would have liked to hear if you did something after your last hair video. Your eplanation was also very helpful. More over I just love listening to your talking voice. Maybe you want to do reading e-books for kids.

LindaLaynaPreston: Thank you for all the info congratulations on baby !!

Bella: Hi Silvia I just found out your channel and I love it! I have a question for shadow root what color is the best? Two weeks ago I tried at home but the color i don’t know why it was a lil bit dark blonde orange and know I don’t know how to fix it, should I buy another color and fix my hair?

Cheryl Lynn: Your hair looks the best it's ever looked! very nice!

Coldplayfreak12: This video was super helpful!

GroovySecondHalf: My highlights seem to be to warm for my cool skin tone. How would this be avoided?

SlaytanicLexi: Love your channel!! My hairdresser watches your channel I told her to watch your channel!!❤️

linda salfen: I absolutely love the color of your hair right now.

Hay Pat: Could you please do a video on highlighting curly hair at home

Daisy Dabu: Such an excellent explanation. Thanks for sharing

Angeline Biswas: You should do some salon vlogs like real life day in life salon. That would be cool

Frida Emma Genberg: What colors do you have in your hair? Looks like something that would fit me my hairdresser does balayage and is a free hand color tech or what ever you hair dresser calls it she’s advanced af anyway

E Schemmer: This is not a dig, but when you dyed your precious locks "bronde or light brown" a few weeks back, I knew you wouldn't last long as a dark, dark, blond because you are so used to seeing that lightness around your face that you really have to wait it out to get use to it. (I've tried myself and always come back to blond). You looked great then, but, even better now. The Blond Bomb is back!!!

Sheldon Aditya: Stunning and helpful message ❤️
