Want to get your hair away from your face quickly but don't have a hair tie? No worries! I've got a solution for those with medium to long hair. I've been doing this trick since 8th grade, and a lot of my classmates/friends/strangers ask me how I do it, so I figured I'd share it with you!

Remember, this is more for functionality than for looks -- but you can make it nice and neat too if you want!

Let me know if you get it to work for you! :B

Hi everyone, this is, why see with nerdy girl makeup and today, I'm gon na show you a quick trick before I leave for school, and this is the hair trick that I do all the time and people have been asking me: how do you do it? So I always end up stopping and doing it over again and showing them what to do so. I figured I'd share it with you, because it's a very convenient way to get. You know your hair off your face. You know if you're in class or at work - and you don't have any rubber band or other hair clip on you. So this is a great way to do that without bleeding any of those things. So here's how it's done so you're gon na gather your hair into a ponytail, and I like to keep it in the center, take your right hand and go underneath and all that ponytail. This will give you the direction of your twist. So keep twisting it, but not too tight and form a bun and then the bottom loose ends. You can just tuck it in and now you want to take some hair from the side and make sure that it's not too tight. If it's too tight start over again, you want it just loose enough so that you can pull some hair up and then work it up and over and as you're doing that you want to tuck to the button underneath the hair that you're pulling over. So you end up with something like this and you don't need any like rubber bands or anything like that, and I love doing this in class, especially if it's warm in the building - and I don't have anything to tie my hair. So there's how it looks like - and you might want to you know, give it a couple of tries before you know it gets working, because you need to kind of figure out the right balance of tightness and looseness. For this to work. You don't want to strain your hair and and like tug it too much so that's about it. I usually it only takes me about maybe like 15 seconds to get my hair up like this, when I'm just sitting down, and not even really thinking too much. I just do it and almost every time I do it, someone always asks me. Oh my gosh, how did you do that? So I just wanted to share it with you. I'Ve been doing this to my hair since eighth grade and I've always had like really long hair. Since I was little and but if you don't have long hair, you can use a pencil because, usually I don't know about you, but I have a lot more pencil lying around and then hair clips. So you can take this pencil and starting from the side where I pulled the hair up, insert the pencil in that area and then you'll see here, there's like a little section or a little hole in the bun, and you want it kind of guide that pencil Through that hole, but do it slowly, but you don't accidentally like rip any of your hair, so so here's the pencil and if you want it to be even more secure, you can even grab some hair from here and then put the pencil underneath that too. And this is really secure. This is not gon na fall off at all, even if I probably go jogging so now, you know how to put your hair up without needing anything, except for maybe a pencil and it's super easy to take down. I know it's not like perfect, you can fix it up, it's more about the functionality and you know the elegant through the look, but it works and if you want to take it down, just take the pencil out if you use one and then it just easily Rolls out and then that's it. So if you have any questions about how to do it, leave me a comment down here and I'll, be happy to answer your questions and let me know how it works out and that's about it. So I hope you like it. I'M off to class now bye,

pokey1984: I've been doing the pencil bun for 20+ years, but this is so much more fun!  I teased my sister with it for six hours last weekend before I showed her how.  Thank you so much, this is brilliant!  To those having difficulty, remember to twist your hair the direction the instructor is.  If you twist the other way, you have to tuck the other way as well.  The more hair you have, the more likely you are to need a pencil or a hair pin.  Remember, hair can be heavy.

Rachel Oswalt: I love this! It's so easy and quick, it's great for medium length hair also. I can do this in my culinary class. Thank you so much for sharing! Again I love it!

Mark Maysey: This was great, I am a 52 year old man with hair down to my knees (my wife likes it long) and I just recently started putting my hair in a bun to get away from the ties that do nothing but break your hair. Chop sticks are good for keeping it up as well. Mark

xena scully: Worked perfectly on the first try. My hair is damp from a shower but I went to work without a hair tie and needed to put it up. Thanks for the tip!

Joanne Mero: This. Is. Brilliant. I thought that since my hair was so thick that it wouldn't work, but it only took me one try and it stays perfectly! Thank you so much!

Crystal Brandy: This is awesome!! There have been so many times that I have needed this when I was out and about without a hair band! Thanks so much for sharing!!!

andrea: Very quick and cute. Thanks for sharing. Love your bracelet too!

cutiebee2: Thanks for showing this beautiful style! Almost succeeded the first time (thx to your clear instructions), hopefully will get it right with a few more tries! :0)

pathetic mortal: This is amazing. Without practice I decided that I should give it a go while I sat in bed at 12:15am at night and it worked first time. Magic has just been done :-D

Shalis Darkhunter: Awesome!! Thanks for sharing this! It got my people wondering how I did the bun without any pins or hair bands! ^^ Took me a few tries but it ain't very hard~

MsLParsons: This worked perfectly and I'm so excited to start doing this from now on...thanks for sharing!

Aella Lee: Awesome! It worked amazingly for me. I have super long hair, and I don't know how to do anything with it long or short. But this was easy, stayed it and looked good the first try. Thanks for the video!

Jaaziel: wow! i got it! attempted for three times though, but i was able to find my way. haha! thanks for sharing!

MsLParsons: This worked perfectly and I'm so excited to start doing this from now on...thanks for sharing!

jejrstans: Brilliant! LOVE this! My hair is layered and a bit short, but I was able to use a pen to hold it up. Success!

miyukipg: Thank you sooo much!! I'm keeping long hair now since my boyfriend likes it. Your tutorial made me not afraid to have long hair! Easy management!! :D

Erin Akire: YOU ARE A LIFESAVER! I want my hair long and I have been looking for a twist I can do - quick and easy. Yours is the BEST! I dont even need to use hairpins! THANK YOU FOR SHARING! Wish I discovered this myself too long time ago! ;-)

Gayatri Mistry: worked from 1st attempt!!!! very happy. thanks for sharing ☺

MissNikilau: Amazing! My hair never stays up! This was so so great!

Cheriblanch Miranda: OMG...you made me remember that I used to do this ALL the time in class when I still had long hair. I can't believe I forgot. Thank you!!! You are soo awesome :)

Jessica Johnston: I can't believe how easy!! I love it. My daughter likes it too!!! Thanks!!!

Natalie Tubbs: Love this! So glad I found it! It took me a few tries, but now that I know it, I never have y worry about having a hair ties or clips! Yay!

Clara Clasen: It kept falling down until I realized I was twisting in the wrong direction. You have to go CLOCKWISE for this to work & tuck on your right side. It doesn't work nearly as well if you go counterclockwise & tuck on the left. That's the direction I always go when twisting my hair up so naturally I tried to do that first. It felt really unnatural to switch to clockwise so it took a few tries before I got it into a reasonable looking bun. Once you tuck the bun under you have to fan out the hair over it to get it to look good. It stays up reasonably well if you do it right.

Amanda: This is so AMAZING! I absolutely love it! It worked out the first time i tried it and it stays the way it is, great.

IamYou86: This was awesome! I did it perfect the first time I tried it! TY so much!

EpicTale: Wow, it works for me! I did it sitting at my computer while watching your video. I plan to practice since I'm still kind of messy with it - thank you so much for sharing! I love that you don't need hair accessories (I know that I don't always have the foresight for that).

Essie: this is awesome!! i have been looking for years for something that i can just do with my hair without a hair tie or hair stick and nothing ever works for my hair because its really straight and slippery but this is perfect!!

sharon _: I was close to giving up when I discovered that the key to success is to have the bun really high up (ie on top of ur head) or else its very hard to keep the bun stay put

Lanette Cordragoran: Got it in one try and it looks quite nice. Thanks so much for sharing!

SportyChlckl: Wow! Great Technique! So simple but beautiful. Thanks!

Whoistori: omg i love this! I get stuck in situations like this all the time and this helps so much!

Christine Bates: Great idea! So easy. I never have a hair tie when I need one so I will b using this trick all the time. Thanks

Moistenator: I'm a guy and and actually blindly got this to work on my first try, good job explaining this.

Maria Souza: Amei esse penteado lindo

KayeC: I love this! My hair is waist length, heavy, and slippery. I'm going to have to work with the style a bit to make it stay, but other than that, super easy. Thanks!

Amber Armstrong: It's so pretty! Thank you for this!

atcwifeOO: That's adorable, Thank you for taking the time to make this video :)

marrionetta: THIS IS LIFE CHANGING

rushig: Hi, thanks for the tip so much. I just tried it and it's superb. If you do the bun so it comes a bit higher than your neck, cover it with your hair, secure it with bobby pins and then slightly part the covered hair to your sides so you can see the bun, that has an absolutely gorgeous result.

archiebolt: it's genius!! can't wait to try it out once my hair got longer :)

VermontConnection: This is exactly how I do it too, my best friend taught me this back in high school. Hurray for Asian girls! This bun works best when my hair is slightly above elbow-length and when it's a bit messy, when it's too short or too long or too well-combed, it doesn't hold for long at all.

PATRICIA MCGINLY: Thank you sooo much "nerdy girl" ! You are so cute and cleaver! I am 58 years old ( mentally about 12!) and have finally let my hair grow long again as it was on college. I'm having fun again fixing it different ways and I simply love this super clever way to keep the hair up with no pins, bands or anything! I can hardly believe it! So terrific! Thanks again! Everyone loves it and I give you all the credit. Really nice of you to share your talent. Best wishes always ;)

bri2uty: HOLY SHIT!! I JUST DID THIS WITH MY SHORT HAIR. I WILL NEVER NEED A HAIRTIE AGAIN. GOOD LORD. OH MY GOD.

Lidia Kotlova Piano Studio -Classical and Popular: I was looking for a simple elegant and everyday hairstyle. Your video is amazing! It doesn't stay without a pin, but looks great. May be it will take time for me to practice. Anyways, thanks a lot!

TellMeAJoke1: This is great.  Got it on the second try.  Thank you very much!

Bindu Menon: Great !The technique is to take a good quantity of side hair and a right amount of tightness.I tried for at least 10 times to get it right

moviemom80: Great trick! Your makeup is gorgeous and your complexion is flawless!

Daphne Ong: Doesn't work with hair that is very smooth and has no product in it :( Looks like a neat trick, though.

Lea Leo: Wow, just tried this and it's awesome! Although I still need a few clips for my bangs that I'm trying to grow it, this is perfect! I got it on my second try. :P

Randi Holland: This is AWESOME!!! Rubber bands tear up my hair and this is perfect to keep my long blonde hair healthy. I do this when it is half way dry with leave in conditioner! Thanks for sharing. :)

MT Corneil: This was amazing! I can't wait to try it. Thanks.

Evan Nelson: Wow, I did it on my first try, and my hair isn't that long! I put a little decorative clip in it too, and everyone thought it was awesome! Thanks!

Tika Den Jemni: how on earth did u do that... its magic

BlueSpur18: Loved it, I mean it took me a long time, when I first saw this video 6 months ago I had short shoulder length hair and it would't hold at all and the pencil thing didn't work either it will hold for like 3 secs and with any movement it will just let go, but 6 months later. my hair grew and it worked the first try and with the pencil it was tight and secure. Absolutely loved it. Thanks girl

Nikka Tolentino: thank you so much for sharing this with everybody! got it after a few tries :)

Colleen Gagnon: This is awesome, thank you so much for posting this. I had to use a pencil because my hair is a bit on the thin side, but the pencil worked great!

Corrine Liaw: What a simple n wonderful way to bun ! Thank u! ;-)

ladyroxanne21: Wow! That is so simple and cool! I love your hair and you're so pretty! Have a happy day, Roxanne

Yvonne M: WOW!!! My hair is thick and below my waist and I was able to do this, great!!!! Thank you so much for sharing!! =)

JerielleMarie: Yep - so far my hair seems too heavy for this.  If I pull it tight it clearly won't get underneath but when I loosen it a little - it just falls right out.  I will keep trying - but I think it might only work on certain types of hair.  LOVE the idea though and thank you so much for sharing!!!  I am jealous!

Azizah Hashim: omg this is really handy...i usually make my hair in a bun using hair pins and most of them broke after a few wears and i had to buy new ones. since my hair is long...its easier to bun my hair after i learned this and i save money out of it! thanks

Elyza Plana: I did it on my first try.. When I tried it again, I can't do it anymore.. uurrgghh,,

Nicole Wheeler: OH MY GOSH this is going to be a LIFESAVER (i can't go around with my hair down i just can't it drives me nuts) thank you so much for sharing!

RHSJohn: This is magic!! It worked the first time I tried; thank you so much!!!

WM Hiendlmayr: Thank you, I have very long hair too and works great.

Ana Longoria: I have to tell you, it took me an hour to learn how to do this, but once I managed to do it...works like a charm. Thanks so much!!!

Xephyr Rain: What sorcery is this???

Ritwika Kanungoe: this was really awesome....... i can finally do up my hair anywhere now... thanks a ton.

Esther Stuedli-Miller: This is awesome!  Half the time my hair doesn't stay up with a package of bobby pins AND hairspray, but so far I've had my hair up with this for close to 15 minutes . . . I've even shaken it.

tRacy Datsport Datsungirl: Thank you so much, am holidaying in Malaysia again very soon and this is a fantastic hairstyle. Worked first time. No hair tie or clips that do damage and break your hair which is my main concern as it has taken me 8 years to grow my hair down just past my shoulders.

masterhide: You're so cute! & this hairstyle is genius! I love when you turn round! With your hair out of your face, we can see how pretty you are! Thanks again! -mh

LightningFringe: THANK YOU! You made it so easy for me to learn! I swear, I was starting to think I was unteachable xD

Paul Perrine: I love it! It took me awhile, but I got it! Thanks!

nnygem: Great idea! i'm wearing it now, and it works really well. I didn't think it'd be too secure, because my hair is really thick, but it's holding pretty well. :) When you said "Hole in the bun" I couldn't help but laugh. I'm so juvenile...

mari lastimosa: Oh that's very clever, never seen it like that before. Thanks for sharing it girl with your beautiful hairstyle.

Bun Styles: wow, very nice! :) Looks like with a little practice it may be on the top of my favorite 'all occasion' updo list

VivaLaWhatshernameTV: It took me a few tries but I got it and I'm probably never using any hair tyes ever again. This is amazing! Thank you!
