**** How to Brush out Long Hair Cat – The Best Way ***********

Hi this is Erica (http://www.EricaNicole.me) from Prixie Pets. Today I am going to talk to you about brushing out your medium to long haired cats. They can get really clumpy and shed a lot all over your house. I am going to demonstrate how to brush them out to prevent shedding and also explain to you the dangers and how it can be uncomfortable for your cat if you go to long in-between brush outs.

I find that the long haired cats when they lose their dead hair it actually sticks to their healthy coat and it doesn’t come out as say a short haired cat. If we don’t help them out by brushing them out it can be too much for them to take care of. This will cause the hair balls, they might get matted or even just knots from all the hair starting to clump up. Now if the mats do get to close to the skin and their too tight. I do highly recommend you take them to a professional groomer. A cat’s skin is not attached to its muscle and it can be very easy to cut them. So please don’t try to cut them out with scissors or try to shave your cat yourself. Now, if they have little simple knots or a few little mats here and there that aren’t too close to the skin. We can actually get those out using a brush and either one of these combs. I’m going to show you how to do that now.

So this is Wally. He is my medium haired cat. And I have actually recruited my boyfriend Bobby to help out with the brush out because he tends to not like it as much as Prixie per say. Ok, now first I always start out with the slicker brush. And I just help use this to kind of help start breaking up all the clumps or loosening it up and not making it so tight to his coat. As you can see his tail is already whipping back and forth. OK now, the comb I like to use on the long haired cats is this one here. It actually has two different lengths of these little prongs and I find it works really good to get out the dead hair. Under coat type of stuff. Now we are going to lay him on his side.

Now the more you stretch them out the tighter that their skin will get and the easier it will be to brush them out.

Bobby: Good boy Wally. He’s being good today huh?

God boy. Look at all that hair… there goes a growl. Good boy. Now once you got all the knots and mats out. I always tell people to really lift up their armpits and get in here. That’s where they tend to have mats. Oh we don’t need you right now Prixie.

It’s fine and then just really another area they always have mats is back here in the pants. I also sometimes do it this way. If they don’t like to be on their side you can lift them up like this.

Bobby: It’s ok. Now does he have any mats right now?

No, he just has some thick clumpy areas, but the mats would work the same way. Just work them out with the brush and then once you find a mat. Just really use this fine tooth comb and run that through afterwards too. Now once they are all completely brush out in the sense they don’t have any of the mats. You can run the Furminator through them too. And that will help getting more of this loose hair out.

Once you have all the knots and the really thick clumpy parts out… then I do recommend running the Furminator through them also. This will help get out lots of the loose loose hair.

This wouldn’t get out mats but it does a really good job getting out the dead hair. And this will help prevent him from getting mats in the future.

I did just want to show you guys that if you start getting a buildup of hair in your slicker brush. These little things can be a little sharp and it can be hard to get the hair out of the brush. So a little quick tip is you can take your comb and slide it up underneath and it grabs it all like that.
