Why I'M No Longer Adding Layers To My Wavy Curly Hair

All we ever hear for curly hair is that it needs lots of layers and volume. In this video, I'm sharing why in my experience, and why that is not always true, and in fact sometimes the exact opposite. Why I'm no longer adding layers to my wavy curly, fine, medium density hair.

The title is a little bit click-baity, i'm not swearing off layers completely, but mostly and in this video i'm going to explain why i'm going to give you all of my reasoning, along with photos so that we have a full picture, i'm also going to be refreshing. My hair there's a reason for that we will get into further in the video. I just really want you to see the texture range that i have in my hair. Welcome back and if it's your first time here my name is janelle. We do all things curly wavy and then some let's get into it. The first thing i want to explain is what i really mean by no or minimal layering and then we'll get into the. Why, for visual purposes, essentially, what i mean is pretty much from my temples down this bottom portion of my hair with this hair. I want it to be virtually all the same length root to tip only slight length variation that i'm aiming to see in this layer is just slightly from the back, a very exaggerated long. U no v a really wide! U, where it just slightly tapers up on the sides, and my hair is forward as it is most of the time the front pieces are not substantially longer than the back, so it has a really square shape up front and for this top layer it is essentially Just long layers and then just up front some face framing i'm almost back there. I was there about two years ago. I'M almost back this side of my hair is mostly back there. This side still has a little bit of growth and evening out that i need to see and essentially just enough growth so that there's root to tip fullness all right now, let's get into the. Why so, one of the first reasons, um, that i am going with no layers - is because of how much my texture varies. So, as you can see here, this is like day four, maybe five i have gently detangled, so without detangling, my hair would probably have a little bit more definition than this in general, without refreshing, especially in the winter. My hair tends to loosen up like this and have a more wavy appearance. I would say i have a fairly normal texture range. Most people have multiple pearl types in their head. The thing is, is they look substantially different most the time when i have gotten haircuts? My hair is substantially curlier it's on wash day, then, if i allow it to loosen up throughout the week without refreshing, i end up having you know this wavier look. What tends to happen is there are more visible gaps in my hair and visible length differences if you've been here for a while or follow me on instagram um. You know that i rock my hair fluffy all the time. It'S actually one of my favorite looks it's a go-to, but i do still want the option of having my juicy curls. Essentially, i need a cut that can flatter both and in my experience over the years, i've played with the different hair, cutting techniques and different layering. Having a consistent length on the bottom, three fourths of my hair and the perimeter is ultimately what gives that to me. I use the we dad out of thin hair jelly, so another reason um. I am foregoing layers in my experience with layering. My hair grows out like and that's not a dramatization here's the thing i have gotten two really beautiful cuts with layers since i started focusing on repairing my hair after my bleach damage, both of them were beautiful initially, as it grew out one of the first things That i start to notice is that i start to lose curl definition, even on the best of wash day with my best routine, my curls were not bouncing up felt almost impossible for me to get those really tight. Ringlets that i would normally see so. Not only were my curls not forming, but then i also noticed that it was harder for me to maintain a shape and it seemed like every time i got layers. I had a harder time growing out my hair, and that leads me into my next reason is breakage and split ends. I'M a little bit prone to getting split ends. But when i first started this journey and when seeing my stylist regularly, i was able to keep up with them. My hair was growing no problem, but what i noticed after i got the layers. The first time is that i was seeing more and more split ends and then i was seeing more and more breakage in places like here around my ears at the nape of my neck, and so what i realized. I always kind of knew, but i finally really accepted was that i really need the strength in numbers. What was essentially happening with these layers is that they were exposing more of my curls, so these individual, fine curls, that had previously had a ton of protection were now taking the world on taking sleep, taking environmental factors on on their own. So this is more exposure and over time that additional exposure meant that more areas of my hair were seeing split ends and breakage. Not only did my hair need the power and numbers, if you will to also just so, i could maintain and aim for length. I also realized that my hair also needs the power and numbers to get to its full curl potential, as i mentioned earlier over time when i had layered styles as they grew out, and i'm not talking like six. Eight months grow out, i'm talking like a month or two grow out where you should still be able to maintain style at most just needed dusting. At those points, my hair, as i mentioned, was really struggling to bounce up, because my hair is fine. The clumping, the additional support of other hairs, was actually encouraging some of my looser patterns to clutch onto something and bounce up with everything else, that's going on. It'S completely normal to have a wide variety of curl types on one head. I have many, but i, for the most part, was able to get pretty consistent performance with styling products and techniques and as soon as i added layers over time, i started seeing more inconsistency around my hair and those same areas that used to participate were no longer Curling up, and it really highlighted the various textures of my hair - is the truth and not necessarily in a good way, especially around like the nape of my neck. I have um some like some of my curliest curls, but then i also have some of my waviest and now they had substantially less to clutch onto so, instead of bouncing up with everything they were just you know scraggling along down by themselves, and i'm not a Fan so it needed the power in numbers, but also really needed the weight from the power and numbers for full curl potential speaking of length and weight. I also have a cowlick at the very back of my head right at the crown i had multiple stylists say to me: oh if they add short layers and the sides right here and then also a little bit in the back, that it'll cover that cowlick and What i found is that taking off the weight from this section and right here is that it actually further enhanced the cowlick and exaggerated it. Instead of them bouncing up and covering that space, they actually bounced up and pushed forward, exaggerating it gon na add a little bit more product biggest reason. The biggest reason i am no longer adding layers other than what i explained at the beginning of this video is because layers kill, my density, kill it and they like back over it and run over it with a truck kill it. I can't emphasize that enough. I know a lot of us have been told that layers give the illusion of more volume, and while that is very true for a lot of curl types, that is not always the case. If you have fine hair, if you have medium to low density, hair and or waves, or a looser curl pattern in general, you think of volume you have to think of where you want it. There is a difference between a full look and height. So when i first asked my stylist about two years ago to change up my cut from a pretty consistent, no layered look to a layered look, i told my stylist i wanted both i wanted height. I wanted fullness. I wanted it all and at that point my hair had grown out a lot. Most of my hair was same thickness root to tip, and so we just thought you know what we think your hair can handle it. Let'S try it oh so, while those layers that were added did give me height, they killed my density so think of these rude clips as height right. This is height lifted, up off of the head density and overall fullness and volume is essentially something that's going to be all over. In order to get height, you generally have to cut shorter layers to pop those layers up and, as you bring those layers up, you are killing the fullness and the shape at the ends. Quick visuals side by side of my hair with the root clips and without next i'm going to show you a side-by-side of my hair when it was root to tip full full and then just after i had cut it and put a ton of layers in curls. Still look great, i'm not saying that they don't, but if you can see in both of those photos, what happens as you lift these layers, you lose the fullness here and as much as i wish, my hair would sit up like this 24 7.. I don't wish it at the expense of fullness, because that loss of fullness ultimately caused all of the issues that i mentioned previously. Other thing that i want to throw out there - and this is a very personal thing - is that all the layering just really just made the back of my hair. Look awful. I'M going to show you a picture of the back of my hair at like one point. When it was extremely healthy - and here was about six months ago, with a bunch of layering, if you have medium to low density hair, but especially if you have low density hair, that layering and those gaps can give the appearance, you have even less hair. And that has definitely been the case for me. Yeah i get a little bit of natural height, but in the long run it looks like i have substantially less hair, leading to a more stringy, less bouncy. Full curl want to have a staring contest, while my hair dries just kidding, i'm gon na, let my hair dry, i'm gon na fluff it and then i'll see you in a second to wrap this up. This isn't my best refresh work y'all. If you want to see me actually nail it watch up here, i show multiple ways for refreshing um. I still have sick brain and i'm trying to do multiple things at once and i don't think i'm doing a great job at it. So hopefully, this all makes sense um, but in general, something to keep in mind things that i stated are not necessarily going to be true for everyone, but they are very true for me, and i know it's going to be true for some of you as well. Um, just today, maybe it was yesterday in my facebook group. Another person same thing, looser curl pattern. Probably medium density noticed that after they got a bunch of layers put into their hair, their curls were not bouncing up like they used to, and that doesn't necessarily mean you got a bad haircut. It doesn't mean you're going to a bad stylist. It just may mean that you just need to adjust the cut that you are getting. Okay, that's not horrible. I do also want to throw out there that i still really do believe in the curl by curl cut for curly hair. I do still wholeheartedly believe curls should be cut dry. One of the best stylus i've ever been to was a diva curl stylist, but she was a level three and she understood curly, hair enough that she could adjust her technique so that she wasn't necessarily giving me a diva cut per se. But she was giving me the shape and everything that i wanted, while using the technique to cut the individual strands in general, when going for a curly haircut when picking a stylist, i would say that is one of the most important things is that your stylist understands Curls that they understand different textures, different densities, different curl patterns and regardless, if they were trained in a specific curly hairstyle, they know how to use their training and adopt it outside of that bubble, for whatever your hair needs are because a good stylist will be able To do just that, if you're in las vegas i'm going to link dashell my stylist in vegas down below also if you are in philly or near philly, i'm going to link victoria who has been trimming, my hair since moving to philly love them both and both Do exactly that they use their skills and adopt it around my wants and needs to give me my desired cut. Let me know if you have any questions, i will be answering them down in the comments below. Jannelle O'Shaughnessy: Something I wanted to add regarding VOLUME/HEIGHT, my hair naturally falls throughout the day and does this WITH and WITHOUT layers. However, when my hair is not layered it still maintains an overall look of fullness which is not true for when my hair is layered. Hope ya'll enjoy this video! Let me know if you have any questions and/or future video requests!

Curly Susie: I’m 100% part of the no layers club!! I always get a blunt cut across the bottom :)

E Sharp: I went into my first Deva cut instinctively knowing this about my hair. I told the stylist layers have always looked awful on me, my hair is fine, and very different day to day. Sometimes parts that were ringlets last wash are straight next time. It’s just hard to guess what it’s gonna do any given day. I told her in the past layers have caused my top layers to curl a lot more than the bottom layer so even a subtle layer will give the appearance of two totally separate hair cuts. Like the top layer curls up shorter and curlier, the bottom gets straighter and looks longer so it’s like I’m wearing a curly wig on top. Just awful. She assured me no no I’m an expert it won’t look like that when I do it blah blah blah. I trusted her. I shouldn’t have. Why won’t stylists listen to people about their own hair? I practically begged her to listen and please not add layers especially short layers on top. I have parts on top that are literally 4 inches long root to top while the majority of my hair is more like 12-14 inches. Huuuuuuuge layers. Gonna take years and years to grow them out. So heartbreaking and frustrating.

Kim Shine: I have similar hair and I hate layers in my hair. It makes my hair stringy and grows out horrible. I've almost got them all gone. Everything you said in this video is true to me. Stylists always tell me I need layers. I thought I was the only one that hated them and I was crazy! Thank you!

Deylight70: I was JUST talking about this with a friend! I decided that layers don’t work for me for my thin, low-density hair. While I had more volume, it also looked like I had less hair. I totally understood what you meant! I have minimal layers now and my hair looks so much fuller and my curls are more defined. Another thing I noticed was that as my hair grew out, my ends were so thin! Thicker on top, very thin at the bottom!

Heidi Trombetti: Thank you, thank you, thank you Janelle! I couldn’t figure out why my hair looks worse since I had layers cut at end of August. Went 8 months this year without a haircut and my hair looked full and wavy. Now I can’t get the bottom to curl up and and it always looks stringy. No more layers for this girl!

Anna Burns: I'm so glad that I heard this. I have super fine, flyaway wavy baby hair. Every curly hair stylist pushes me to get layers and they always look so bad. My hair would be see through. It bugged me so much. Since all the salons were closed where I live, I decided to cut my hair into a bob at jaw length and get rid of most of the layers. It looked great. I got more compliments on my bob job, than I ever got from the pros. I did finally go to a stylist (not curly specialist) and she agreed that a bob is best for my hair. She's the first stylist that has said that to me. Today I was starting to doubt myself and wondering if I should get layers again, and I was saved from that mistake by hearing you. My bob is now at about chin length. I may need a trim pretty soon, but no layers. Thanks for sharing.

Stephanie Florentino: YES!!! Wow. I *just* had this exact realization recently. I have the same problems. Low density hair, the cowlick in back, etc. I have a bunch of layers and definitely regret it. My hair looks so much thinner and the back especially is bad. Time to grow this out! Thanks for your thorough and insightful explanation.

enodine: Agree so much. It took me 2+ years doing the CGM to figure out that curly cuts make my hair look WORSE. Since I've let it grow out and made it more all one length I'm so happy with the fullness I have and how my waves behave. Wish I had seen this 2 years ago!

Sami Thprinklez: I always bought into layers because I was scared of "triangle" hair. But that only ever happened when I brushed my hair out. Much happier now without layers.

Christine VR: Thank you SOOO MUCH!! My hair is almost exactly like yours. I’ve always been told that layers will give me more volume but I have always had that mid back-of-the-head flat dead spot that never bounced up! Drives me crazy!! 20 years ago I had long one length hair and I used to get beautiful curls. I thought that was gone because my youth is over but now I realize it might have been because of the layering I’ve been getting ever since!! I also loved watching you casually do your day 4 refresh as you spoke! Really helpful.

Christina Tortorilla: This makes a ton of sense, thank you! When I first started CGM a few years ago the back of my hair was super full and curly and now, several deva cuts later, it definitely needs some help. I just thought I needed more *frequent* layering but now I will definitely be trying it your way to see if I can get this back to my pre-layered look.

Brittany Snyder: At first, layers were great for me, but now that I’ve had it a few times, I totally see what you mean by loosing density and thinning in areas where you wouldn’t. My problem is my front pieces are heavy (I have wavy hair and like to keep it long) so would a blunt cut with face framing be possible in a haircut? I’ve been thinking this with my upcoming appt. I’ve also had some shedding due to seasonal changes and stress so I’d like to make density a priority.

Adrienne Lang: I absolutely needed this video today! I have baby fine hair that is a mixture of waves and curls. Despite regular trims, the ends start looking wispy and stick out...because of the layers! They also grow out like shit making me look like a mullety Christmas tree after a month or so. Looks like it's hair in a bunville until it grows out enough to chop it to a more suitable nearly one length!

Sonia Jaunita: I’m glad you said that. I’m still in the process of growing my hair so right now it’s just a mess and my hairstylist friend keeps telling me that I need to get a lot of layers and I keep trying to tell her that I don’t have enough hair for that. I can’t afford to spare that hair in the bottom layers!

Maya Feltwell: This is such valuable info!! I’m having a curl by curl haircut at a curl specialist in September and it’s great to know this beforehand. I have fine and low density curls with lots of different textures and have found layers do exactly that - leave my hair feeling even finer. Thank you!!!! ❤️

Madao: omg you thank you for confirming my doubts! i hate layers! so much! i've been given multiple layers in my hair without my consent more than once! and all my curls are gone. they're just half curls now lol.

Chandra Bowlby: Whoa total lightbulb moment! I'm low density and this totally explains why my cowlick bald spots have been worse. Thank you!

gotit0167: Yes! Makes so much sense when you break it down this way! Exactly what I’ve been doing for the last few years and had no idea it’s working against me and my fine, low density curls. I’ve got the crown cowlick too. My curly stylist has been so sweet to humor my push for the layers Thank you so much for this!

annastayziaa: Literally this is my story. Thank you so much. I’ve been recovering my hair from a layered cut like the one you had and it’s doing better. I have my first curly hair cut towards the end of this month and I’m thinking of going back to “long layers” like I had years ago. thank you ♥️

vanislegirl81: Thank you so much for this!! Just saved me another round of disappointment with a layered cut. I’ve noticed all the same issues, but never really “clicked” until this video. ❤️

elinor kent: I couldn't have said it better! Layers don't work for me either. They make my ends prone to breakage as you said so eloquently! And also make my hair look less full :)

Danelle Boxberger: Thanks Jannelle! This is so helpful! I’m a stylist in AZ I have always loved working with curls and this video helped me so much! It won’t make sense to stylist’s at first because it’s exactly the opposite from what we’ve been taught! If you are a stylist keep an open mind! This is perfect for the type of curl and loose curls that Jannelle has! I’m excited to try it on my daughters hair! Thank you thank you thank you!

Gabriele Garcia: My hair is 2b, I have medium/high density but it is EXTREMELY fine. Last year I went for layers and my hair NEVER curled up again ever since. At least not how it used to.

Larea92503: I totally agree. I have very fine, low density hair. I got a specialized curly cut last year with lots of layers. It definitely showcased my curliest under-layers. I think it looked good for a brief time. However, I had serious gaps show, and the thinness has really shown as it has grown out. I have had to accept that no magical cut is going to miraculously change my hair. I am working to accept and enjoy what I have to work with... Thanks for the video!

Dzaeli: this is especially bad if your stylist relies on thinning shears to make layers. it removes all the weight from the ends of the clumps and they won't form curl clumps anymore, and obviously takes out the volume, since that's what they are designed to do.

Sarah Eby: Love this! I have a ton of hair, but I’ve realized that layers screw up my hair! My curl pattern is looser and the weight of my hair on top doesn’t work when they put all the layers on the bottom. It goes all over the place and turns into a hot mess. My hair is easier when I have no layers, but then it lacks style. I need to try just light layers in the top third. Thank you thank you thank you!

Meredith Staudenraus: Ugh I wish I had seen this before my haircut. I feel so depressed it barely curls now. I thought I was crazy because I went to a curl stylist and they insisted on layers. Lockdown was better for my hair. Now it's stringy and feels more fragile at the ends. My curl clumps are all but gone. I came into the salón with beautiful long curly hair and they fucking ruined it. So upset that I have to regrow and cut this again. No more layers!!!!!

christa penman: This is the best timed video!! I was just thinking I want more height...let’s get proper shorter layers, but my gut was telling me.. you’ll loose density for your curls to form. Thank you for your video it’s given me pause and info to think on.

Eileen Cukierski: I have a cowlick at the back of my head just as you described. I asked my stylist to cut shorter layers back there as I thought it would help hide the cowlick. She explained that no, shorter layers would actually make the splitting worse...so happy she didn’t listen to me!

Laura Campbell: This seals it. We have basically the same hair, I just have some more grays! I'm still trying to grow out some of my layers, but it looks much better without many layers. Thanks for sharing.

holly silliman: Girl, you just spoke straight to my fine haired soul!! Thank you so much for this video!!!! So incredibly helpful! Oh, and I have a cowlick in the same spot and it drives me NUTS. I thought layers would help

Blessed Life, Love, and Faith.: Hello! I have wavy thick hair, like 2b and I had gotten layers about 2 months ago. Right now, I can't wait to grow them out! It's brought all the points you said, especially with breakage. Next time, I'll just get face framing layers with a straight cut in the back. Also maybe a nice fringe tool Thanks a lot for sharing. It was quite helpful. God bless. (:

Lauren King: We have very similar hair, and my layers always end up essentially looking like a mullet...short up top, and long in the back, tapering out to a V. I've asked my stylist to cut the back shorter to compensate, but I never really felt like I got what I asked for. This could explain why. I've been thinking of going to get slightly angled bob to bring the bottom layers closer to the top layers so I don't have as much waiting for it all to grow out. This video seals my decision. Now, any idea what to do when you lose hair at the temples due to stress and you get tufty bits that make you look like an owl??

Krish Layne: Exactly the same for me. I finally bobbed mine to start over again. As you can see by my photo I was styling my hair so tended to cut for styling and this included more layering. Now that I’m leaving it curly I need blunt lines for a denser look, extremely minimal layering if any, and I also clip my roots in areas that tend to not have fullness. The difference is remarkable. Now I’m only coloring my hair, and I tend to need recovery time after that. I’m a hairstylist and it still took me time to commit to my hair/curls and what they needed. It’s really nice to see my experience is shared!

paulna85: This video is the truth I didn’t know I needed to hear. 1- thanks for the quality content. I’m loving this new season of curl lessons 2- HOW DO YOU FIX IT JANNELLE HOW DO YOU FIX. HOW DO WE GROW THAT MESS OUT. honestly the tangles get so bad that I actually broke a lot of my own hair out of frustration. What do we do? We have to cut? How do we grow it without going nuts?????

Amber Lattuca: Ahhh, you've just made it all click for me. I've been adding layers this past year since *everyone* suggested it. I could swear my hair has been thinning like crazy, yet I've lost no density at the scalp. This video explained exactly what is happening. I'm overdue for a cut, so I think I'll chop a few inches off and NOT add any new layers. Thank you!

Audrey E: I got layers on my wavy hair and blunt ends for the summer, I honestly don’t see my hair as wavey when I do just a blunt and all one length cut, will definitely take your advice and learn from my own experience as well. Thank you

Corra Morgan: thank you. i’m suppose to get my hair done in a week and i needed this. i was going to go the opposite route and get a shaggy cut. but hearing everything you said i’m changing my mind! my curls completely disappeared after getting the nexplanon implant. i’ve had it out for four months and my hair still isn’t back to normal

Mikaila Barbour: I saw your video when it was originally posted after I started my rehab curl journey! And I should of rewatched it before my cut last week! Haha everything you said I have now ran into with my medium density, fine hair. Instantly saw the loss of strength in numbers part, the volume loss of the bottom portion and straggling feeling! Let the growing out begin haha ‍♀️

Chris H: My hair is high density, thick, and coarse, but I’ve also realized that I prefer more minimal layers too. I don’t need help with root volume, and too many layers make me look like a mushroom and just look really awkward, and it’s frustrating to style. People always assume I want my hair thinned out or something, but I want to embrace my fullness!

Mystic: Glad to see this, I hate layers for me. I liked my hair for the first time in my life having a blunt cut all one length. May go for some face framing to change it up now and then but overall having no layers has been game-changing

Emerald Eyes: Very good explanation of what us fine, curly-haired girls need and go through!! I really enjoyed this video. Good job, girl!

Zoë: Thank you for sharing this. Months ago I treated myself to a expensive haircut. She put so many layers in my hair it felt like I lost half my hair. Days later I noticed my curls were not forming property, I know it's just hair but I was devastated. It felt so thin. I decided to start growing out the layers and cutting the thin layers at the bottom off myself. I lost many inches but I am slowly getting rid of the awful layers. Thank you so much for inspiring me to cut my hair myself. I feel better knowing this is a actual thing that happens to curly haired people.

Christine Dicks: This is me ESPECIALLY now that I'm in my fifties and I'm letting my grays (actually white) hair grow out. It's a completely different texture and curl then my natural brown hair. But even before then, and I've had grays hair since I was in junior high, my natural hair has had a different curl and texture all my life. Everyone wants to cut curls with layers. And my hair has looked stupid every time. So I have avoided going to get my haircut like the plague. Always did my best to try to cut my ends on my own or have someone at home do it. Thank you for this. This is what I've needed for so many years! You have beautiful hair! ❤️

Sara Kempler: OMG you may have just saved me from wrecking my hair! I was thinking I need to get more layers put in so that the weight doesn’t loosen my curl pattern...my hair used to be so nice and dense but it’s probably medium density now. Usually around day 2-3 the clumps get bigger/more hairs team up so I get pretty cute ringlets in the bottom 3rd (ish) of my hair. I was thinking to get it shorter and a better shape via layers...reconsidering that now. Sigh. Idk what to do with it now! Maybe keep my few non-dramatic layers, get some length off, and some face framing? Blah. Jannelle thank you so much for this insight!

AphroSpiritual Love: I have 3c/4a curly hair. Mostly 3c. And, I am with you girl lol. My hair is waist-length when straightened, and shoulder-length in its curly state. I like my hair to be long, and layers gives much more volume than I want. Also, it's hard for it to even out if you get them cut too short. Plus, you never know what it'll look like straightened, at least in my case.

Christine Martinez: You are speaking EXACTLY what my hair does. I tell myself you're my hair twin!! Multiple curl patterns, down to the grays! But this video - the cowlick, the loss of density, the gaps! Thank you, you're the only one on YouTube seen with this type of hair.

Debbie LC: You just blew my mind! My hair is so thin and fine so I have always layered it to give it volume. Your "before" pictures are just like my hair (except maybe not as thin). It gets stringy and pointy and looks terrible! I'm definitely going to try growing them out now. Thanks for the epiphany!

Emani Cail: Thank you so much for this I recently got a cut from a curl specialist and I told her long layers and she ended up taking a chunk off one side of the back of my head so its like one choppy layer on ONE SIDE! Everytime I get layers it somehow turns out horrible so Im definitely going to try a blunt cut when I get a new cut. Also I have low density 3b/3c hair!

R Jean: "one size fits all" is so far from the truth when it comes to haircuts... glad you're figuring out what's best for you. I have a problem with too much density, so a little loss does wonders for me but certainly everyone is different and your hair looks lovely while skipping out on layers.

mermaid 2218: I've always had layered hair since I was a teen. My natural hair is 2b, fine with medium density. My layers looked great but I am trying one length cut again. The layers were beautiful until split ends starting to come in. Ill keep you updated about how I like my one length.

Liane Bayliss: This is so interesting. Due to lockdowns I haven't been able to get my normal cut so all of my layers are growing out. I have super fine, low density hair and as its growing out I am definitely loosing volume but what you sat about density makes so much sense

Heather: Why am I just discovering this now? I have been getting layers in my hair for the past year and slowly but surely the curls are disappearing. Next haircut I am trying this. Thanks so much for this! ❤️

Abby: My hair literally does the same thing that yours does. Just before my wedding, I didn't layer my hair and I had beautiful full and long hair. And I realised I had lesser split ends for a loooong time.

Judy Jergins: I’ve been pondering this just lately! A gal I know says she doesn’t do layers anymore so maybe I’ll try it. I have a cut scheduled this Tuesday 12/8 so need to decide. Thank you for this video, Jannelle!

Dana Grueser: Holy shit you just explained why my curl pattern has been a disaster for several months. I was growing out from chemo, and once I got past chin length my stylist kept adding all these layers. I wanted to go shorter last time & more one length & she talked me out of it. I now have a shag where the bottom half is barely wavy & the top is 3a/3b & just sticks out everywhere. Disaster! Going to schedule a chop & start over ASAP!

Suzanne Hendrix: Um..... thank you. I have been telling hairdressers this for years and no one will listen. I have been grateful for my home COVID cuts because I finally have confirmation that my fine, thin, wavy hair looks best with a blunt cut. Now I need to find a new hairdresser who won’t cut it crooked... I can’t do this forever...

Mandi Jablonski: My mind is blown!!! This makes SO much sense!!! Thank you! ♥️

Michelle Turner: This is amazing! I have almost the same hair type as yours and I've always gone for long layers. Thinking of going for only face-framing next time.

Настя Керницька: OMG, the back of my layered hair looks exactly like yours, and honestly I hate it. I've also wanted to grow out my layers, but was hesitating, and your video just popped up, just on time thanks for all the explanations

Elizabeth Cole: Thank you so much for this! The details you explained and the comparison photos you showed help me to realize that I think I have these same issues. Time to adjust my haircut structure!! Thank you so so much!!!

Allison Ahola: I have had the same issues! I used to get my hair cut wet by a stylist in layers, now I cut my hair at home curl by curl making sure to check the back of my hair so all the curls line up

Alexa Muñoz: I’ve been doing layers for years because my “straight “ hair was too poofy on the bottom. Now that I am allowing my hair to be wavy and styling it as such, I am seeing the wisdom of letting it all level out

Abi Watts: Thank you for this video! I haven't had layers for years for this reason, but had been straightening my hair most of that time. Now that I'm a few months into my wavy/curly journey I was starting to think about layers, but now I'm rethinking! My hair sounds similar to yours, except mine is more of a loose wave

Wendy H: Same!! Just had no idea why my hair was doing this. Thank you for some insight!!

Lanie Rode: This makes so much sense!! I got my first Deva cut a year ago and since then have had a really hard time getting the full/bouncy look I was getting before it. Your hair type sounds really similar to mine so I so appreciate your content!! (Also this is beside the point but the color palette happening in this video with wall/lamp/shirt/cat is aesthetic perfection )

Meghan Nuñez: Hey Janelle! I have medium to low (mostly low) density, and EVERYTHING u said LITERALLYYY happens to me!!! I FINALLY have somebody to relate to with my hair!

da Fraunz: I was growing out my layers for like a year and decided to add a lot of them back into a few weeks ago, wish I would have seen your video sooner and just done layers on top they look good but the density part is just so true for me as well

Lizbet PCB: Thank you! This makes sense to me. I have medium density, fine hair, and loose curls to waves. Next haircut is scheduled in early January (hopefully!). Going to ask my wonderful stylist to look at this. I trust her judgement, 100%

Cassie Robinson: This video is ridiculously helpful What you’re discussing- loss of fullness and stringy ends, etc is exactly what I’m struggling with. The picture of the back of your hair with layers is what mine looks like currently. Going to work on getting the bottom 3/4 of my hair the same length root to tip!

Sandra LeQualque: Finally a woman who truly understands fine curly hair and how NOT to layer. The salon wanted to trim and layer my hair but I refused.. You understand how our fine curly hair can appear thinning in areas looks more sparse than what it is

Raechele White: This makes so much sense!!! Thank you for this video. This is what my thin waves need.

Sallija Bule: So happy to have found this talk before again deciding to layered hair cut! Soo many people suggest it for curly hair, but I have felt it makes it look like I have even more thin hair! Great ted talk no hair hahah

Cassie Robinson: This video is ridiculously helpful and relevant to my current hair struggles I’m going in for a cut soon and I now know what to tell the stylist to help me grow out my current layers and get the shape that my hair desperately needs!! Thank you!!

Dee Silver: I feel the same way. I want to be able to get a haircut that looks amazing curly and blow dried. It’s hard to get some one who understands hair. My past hairdresser moved and I haven’t been able to find someone like her.

Julianna Felkoski: This is such a good explanation. My hair is really similar to yours. I've had layers since I was like 12. I have always struggled to grow my hair out healthy. When I was young, I wanted thinner hair. Not anymore. I want to keep every single hair. Shower fallout is a tragedy every time. Thank you for explaining the effect of layering so well. No one told me! I'm 27.

Paula Casey: This is the best explanation of the hair cut I've read! I had heard curls should not be cut into layers, but didn't understand why. Thank you!

Beth Johnson: Thank you so much for this! My hair is very similar to yours with cowlick and same issues! This makes so much sense for me ♥

Courtney Derouen: Thank you so much for this! It definitely helps me how to evaluate my hair for the best cut for my hair type! Your videos are always so helpful

Dee Gee: Oh Jannelle! I am so with you! I have hair around my nape and sides that is straight and layers expose that straightness! Thanks so much for your insight!

doglover LMH: I agree with what you said as I have wavy to curly hair that is fine. I have a ridiculous amount of hair so density is not an issue but man when I add too many layers the fine hair takes a beating and I also end up with split ends and fairy knots!

Sandra M: Loved this video! I’ve drooled over those curly girls with big luscious curls and I truly thought a layered cut would result in same. Except my curl pattern isn’t a big curl. It’s more of zig zag wave on some area, a tighter coil in others. And I have thinner hair and to add insult a flat head soooo every time I layered it liked just ok from front but stringy (like you said) on the ends, side profile was worse and my flat head was accentuated. Instead of a rounded hair profile it was like a bad mullet. Snd the back view was worse. No curl pattern at all. In thinking back to when it was one length my hair would have perfect crimped wave in back (root to end) with more curls on side and front. I’d get compliments but my quest for big ringlets led me think a layered cut would magically make that appear. So now I’m growing out the layers and wearing a pineapple 24/7 so I can stand it. My question is at what intervals do I get ends trimmed to meet up to the shorter layers? And what interested me was your explanation about only getting top 1/4 of crown with long layer? And face framing. Could that be explained more? I used to get it slightly angled on side -but my stylist seems to look blank when I say face framing. I know time to find new stylist. But pandemic got me at home. But thank you for your video and also ... shout out to the eye opener in an early IG story you made mention about using wavy products of curly products weighed down the clumps. I have great springy clumps (in front) but once I apply product it doesn’t even spring up. It’s like frozen. So that was very enlightening!!!

Red Rose: This is a really great informative video! While I dont have the same issue (my low density, fine curls love layers especially at the back of my hair) its really nice to see the other side of this and an explanation of how it works the flipside!

Christiane Blanton: My timing in finding this video was perfect. I have an appointment coming up at salon that specializes in curly hair. It’s new to me. I’ve never had a dry cut before. I haven’t had my hair cut since late July or early August. I think I need a few long layers and face framing, but not the layers I was initially thinking of. My hair is longer than in my current profile picture. I’ll definitely be talking to the stylist about this. Thank you!

BiAh91: I went to my stylist in October wanting layers because that was what in my mind would make my fine, low density 2c/3a curls appear thicker. He told me the exact things you talked about in this video and gave me just one layer like yours. My hair is pretty much the same length, it's just a little shorter at the top layer and that's the only layer I have in my hair. It's March and it's time for another haircut. I think I'll keep my hair this way (I also want to grow it out), I'll just ask for some face-framing pieces at the front. What you said makes so much sense! And also, he taught me how to clip my hair for more height without losing density

Julie Allen: Glad I watched this before going to get my hair cut, I have hair very similar to you, I want volume but now I see the folly in getting layers because I have the same issues. Thanks for saving me before I spend $80 on the wrong cut for my hair.

Tina LeCour: Your hair looks great without the layers, I personally could never do that because my hair is very thick and if I don't add layers I get a triangle look that's so heavy on the bottom. I think maybe it just depends on how thick your hair is when it comes to layering but your hair always looks beautiful!!

Komal Warty: You are literally my Hair Twin! Every single tip and video of yours makes complete sense to me!

Siobhan Henley Subto Tampa: I love that your sharing your unique experience instead of repeating what heard. This makes total sense to me and is very helpful especially with the photos is what makes it

Anna L: This was a brilliant and very relatable video. Thank you for posting and explaining everything so beautifully.

catdog dogcat: I totally agree, I’ve got the same cowlick. All one length looks the best. This video is so helpful

cikis14: I had beautiful curly hair and after some autoimmune stuff my hair is straight :( , so much finer and with no volume, breakage everywhere. What you say about density and exposure makes a lot of sense. however, layers gives you volume and movement...seeing my hair now, without layers and completely lifeless I'm not sure if there is another solution other than layers

Lara Brooks: This makes so much sense! Thank you, I'm going to try reducing layering in my hair!

Emerald Ashes: As a wavy-haired chick who is so unhappy with my new haircut, this is so validating. Time to try something new.

liveandlovepassion: Really mind blowing to me my hair is wavy and I can feel you so much on this one! Very true, thank you for sharing this!

c0c0nut-tr33: Legit did layers at the end of last year and they're barley growing back to normal...wish I saw this video sooner! Totally agree with everything in this video!!!!!

Kathy Anderson: My wavy to curly fine hair curls MUCH better the longer it is. I have higher density on top & at the nape, but those layers make the side of my head look stringy. I think I'm going to grow these layers out & see how it goes. Which shouldn't be a problem since the salons in calif are closing down again. Thanks for the advice I thought I HAD to have layers with curly hair. ❤️❤️

Geo Teneria: Ohhh Jannelle I think that is happening to me I'm going to take this advice to my next cut I love your channel.

Maggie Humphrey: Bitch, I love you. THIS IS THE MOST HELPFUL CURLY HAIR TIP IVE EVER HAD. My hairs medium but I think my dads native hair is just making my hair really too heavy for being on the finer side. I cut my hair in layers to chop of dead pieces and haven’t had a good moment since I was so confused
