Curls Dynasty Review: Deep Treatment, Leave-In, Twisting Cream, Curl Defining Cream 2C/3A Hair

In this video, I will be continuing on with highlighting products from black owned companies. This weeks brand is Curls Dynasty which was started by Nickie Nougaisse. She had a hard time finding products on the market that would work for her type 4 hair, so she made her own. Her friends and family loved them so much, she decided to make a business from it. (Reference: https://curlsdynasty.com/pages/about)

I found the hair mask and leave in conditioner at my local King Soopers. When I bought these products, they were all between $10-$15, but this is subject to change and determined by when and where you buy them.

I really loved the deep treatment, the custard, and the leave in. I am aware that the Twisted Definition twisting cream is not meant for my hair type or for the purpose I used it for. I bought it by mistake, not realizing there were other options. But I wanted to test it with this understanding, to see if it might still work well enough. I do need to do further testing with this, but I still liked the product. I just preferred the Vanilla Cream Custard more, which is no surprise as it was formulated for my hair.

My hair type is 2c-3a, low porosity, medium density, and medium texture.

I think there is nothing wrong with testing products that aren't meant for your hair. They may have been made with another hair type in mind, but you may be surprised and find you can still make them work. You just need to do it with the understanding that they may not work out.

We are continuing on with black history month and reviewing some products by black owned companies. Now there are so many great ones on the market, there's just no way that i can do all of them, but i do still want to encourage you to go out and support as many of these, not just through black history month but throughout the year as Much as we can, that being said today, i will be talking about brands named curls dynasty curls dynasty was founded in 2014 by nicole nugas and, like many other black women, she had a very hard time finding products for her natural hair. So she did her own research and created some recipes for hair products and her family and friends loved them so much that she decided to make a company out of it. So i'm going to go over a few of the products from this line today. Talk about them talk about how to use them and see what our thoughts are on these products, hello to all my wonderful wavies and my curly and coily coterie. If you're new to my channel hi, my name is lena and welcome to my bathroom for this particular routine. I did do a wash now style later routine. I went in with the tj and rose water sulfate free shampoo first, because i do not have the shampoo from this line. Unfortunately, after i use that shampoo, the first product that i went in with was the curls dynasty pumpkin mint, deep treatment. Now the scent of this is really nice. It'S a very light sweet scent with a very subtle underlying hint of mint, the texture. I am not kidding you when this felt like silk between my hands. It is so creamy and delight it was fantastic. So i applied this to my hair and i worked it through my strands and i don't know if i just didn't have very many knots and tangles in my hair. It would be surprising to me if i didn't have any, because it had been four days since i washed my hair less and typically it's at least a little tangled by then, but this so effortlessly worked through my hair that it just was utterly surprising to me. The claims on this product are that it infuses and restores moisture, grows and helps retain length, adds softness, shine and manageability, strengthens weak hair cuticles and prevents breakage and is great for strengthening natural relaxed and transitioning dry damaged, overly porous hair types, and this particular product is For all hair types after i was done applying this to my hair, i did leave it in for 20 minutes because i was using heat on my hair. That'S what the instructions suggest and after that i rinsed it out, and i blow dried my hair until it was dry. My hair was so silky and soft after using this that i just was blown away. There are two different proteins in here: there's hydrolyzed keratin and hydrolyzed wheat protein. That works really well. For my hair, my hair really likes protein, which is something to be aware of, and then i was really curious. What the pumpkin in this was for uh, just because i missed curiosity, so i did do a little research and found pumpkin has been shown in some studies to help with hair growth, all right we're going to move on to styling now. So i have three products for the styling routine and the first one that i started off with was actually the kalahari smoothie leave-in. This leave-in has a very light subtle scent as well. That is very pleasant and it's very silky and smooth to work with. After doing a wash now style later routine, i do tend to struggle a little bit with the knots and tangles and this works through them very well, which is good because on the actual product, it's claiming to melt away knots for easy detangling. It also said it's going to be a powerful moisturizer that hydrates and softens the hair promotes manageability, healthier, hair growth and retention, and it does say on here that is great for all hair types and it works great for porous curly, kinky, very dry, hair types in Need of hydration this product was very moisturizing, and it worked very well on my hair and it's just easy to work through the hair, because it's so silky and smooth. I do want to mention this very briefly. This line from what i could find anyway doesn't have a gel or a mousse, or anything like that. The products that they have that are going to give you hold are just the curl creams i actually bought two and the first one i bought was the twisted definition, but i realized after ordering this and after it arrived that it's actually meant for more type 4. Hair, so i wasn't 100 sure whether i wanted to use this. I did still go in and use it and i'll talk about that here in a second, so the first product i actually went in with was the other curl cream. Was the vanilla cream, custard curl, defining cream, and i applied this to the left side of my head. I wanted to just kind of do a half and half, so i could compare and kind of see this particular product has a very light sweet scent that i really just liked. The smell of it was very pleasant and very subtle. The texture of this product was also very smooth and silky like the other products in this line and was very easy to work through my hair. I did apply this as if it were a gel, so i will leave up above my styling routine, so you can see in more details if you're curious, how i sew my hair. So the claims on this product are that it's a stronghold, curl definer, though on their website. They describe it more as a medium hold. It provides definition, shine, bounce and softness it minimizes, tangles and breakage. There'S no crunch and no flakes and it's wonderful for all curl types on their website. They do also say this is meant to stretch curls on the ingredients. This does have both beeswax and caranuba wax. If you are a strict cgm, i would reach more for the leave-in than the curl creams, because both of these do have that wax, and that is not cgm. There is a slight chance. It is going to build up on your hair, though, if you are clarifying your hair pretty frequently, it should really be an issue. So moving back to the twisted definition twisting cream, i did still decide. I wanted to give this a try partially, just because i have it now. I want to see if i can make it work for my hair, and also i want to give you the viewer, the information as to whether or not this is something you should reach for. If you see it in the stores, but i did that with the understanding that it is not meant for my hair, so if it doesn't work out perfectly, that's on me not the product so going through this really quick. This one has a very different scent than the rest of the products in the line. I'M not 100 sure how to describe it, because it's slightly familiar to me - and i just can't quite put my finger on what it is. But it does have a very slight light sweet scent and then something else, that's a little bit sharper that i really can't describe it wasn't my favorite scent, but it also wasn't bad. So it really just depends on your personal preference. Now the texture of this one is also very silky and smooth like the rest of the products in the line, and the claims on this one are that it is emollient and moisturizing. It is infused with aloe, marshmallow and ginger root. It provides gel like soft hold and it minimizes tangles and breakage. It'S going to add softness and shine. Now again, this is meant for type 3 to 4 kinky, thick hair textures for creating twist out styles and adding moisture. It'S not really meant for the way that i used it, but i just want. I wanted to see how it worked out and then again i do want to point out this also has that beeswax and cara noodle wax. So, just something to be aware of after i applied these products, i did blow dry my hair until it was completely dry. I just followed my typical diffusing routine and i fluffed and i scrunched it, and these are my final results. We'Ll start off on the left side, with the vanilla cream custard now again, this is claiming to give me a medium hold, and then it's also going to stretch out the curls so based off of what this product is claiming. It did its job very well. It was very moisturizing, it made my hair feel very healthy. It didn't really give me much of a cast which it says it's not going to do, but it did feel very soft. The first level was about normal. For me, the volume was about normal for me and the actual curl clumps themselves. It clumped really nicely. It gave me some really good clumps that, like it's saying, it's going to do were more stretched out than normal, so it did give me more elongation, which gave me more waves and curls. I would like to try this on its own without the leave-in conditioner and with a gel instead just to see if i can still get more definition with this, because i do like this product - and i don't tend to wear my hair wavy too often, but it Still did do its job very well and if that is what you were looking for, it is a fantastic product. Now, moving on to the twisted definition side again, this is a product that was not formulated for my hair, not only that, but it is claiming to give a soft hold, not a hard hold or anything like that, but this did still give me some underlying hints Of definition, underneath that first was a little more than i'm used to, but the volume was also more as well um, so this is something i think if i were to want more of just kind of a tussled natural wavy look. This is actually a really good product to reach, for. I would, however, be very interested in trying this product with a gel to see if with something that's a little stronger hold. We can reduce the frizz and get more definition, because i think because this is a softer hold product and it is so moisturizing, especially because, in addition to using that leave-in conditioner, it was really just too much moisture for my hair and it really just kind of Stretched everything out so if i were just to use the twisted definition and if i were to put a little bit of gel over the top of it, i still think this would be a great product and i can make it work for my hair all right. I'M moving into day two now and i do want to talk about a few things here, uh, so the first thing right off the bat i do want to comment on is. I did not film my hair before i refreshed it, and i did that because i didn't think it was fair to the company or the brand or the product, because i was the one that misused this product. So something just to keep in mind is that if you over moisturize your hair, your curls are not going to last they're going to stretch and they're going to get frizzy. It'S just the nature of over moisturizing your hair. So because i layered the leave-in conditioner with the curl creams, both of which are extremely moisturizing, it was just too much for my hair and it didn't hold. So that is something to keep in mind is, if you are someone who is struggling with definition, that could be part of your problem check yourself to make sure you're not layering too many products on top of each other and not putting too much moisture in your Hair now that being said, i did refresh my hair and i refreshed with water and part of the benefit with refreshing with water. If you've put too much product in your hair, is it's going to help dilute it, and that is exactly what it did here. So i spritzed my hair with water until it was just a little damp and then i used the praying hands technique to smooth any frizz back into the hair, and then i diffused for about five to ten minutes before getting my final results. So i actually haven't really fluffed this, because i don't really feel the need to, but i do want to show you these results so again. Keep in mind. This is the vanilla custard. This is the twisted definition. I am actually more happy with my day two results. After refreshing than i am with my day, one results - and i think a big part of that is because of that over moisturizing. If you have my type of hair, which is medium density, medium, texture and low porosity with that looser textured curl, i would recommend not really layering these products um. That being said, they did exactly what they were claiming to do. These products are claiming to stretch out the curls, which is what they did. They gave me more of a wavy appearance and they still gave me some really good, curl definition and amazing moisture. So overall, i am really happy with these results. Let'S wrap this up. Really quick, so i'm going to talk about these products and whether or not i would recommend them these are available in a lot of local stores. You can also buy them online. I bought two of these products at my local kroger, so keep an eye out for them. There they're in the natural hair section i'm now going through product by product, the pumpkin mint deep treatment. It is now probably my favorite mask. I would 100 recommend this. It really just works so well through my hair to soften and moisturize, and it detangled so easily that this is a 100 for me. If you see this in your store, take advantage and pick it up moving on the kalahari smoothie leave-in. This is a very good leave-in conditioner, it's extremely moisturizing. That is something to be aware of. If you have a lower porosity hair like mine, that doesn't need a ton of moisture, this would probably be good on its own. That is how i will continue to use it in the future is, i will just use this and then maybe pair it with a gel. It is a very good product. It is also curly girl method approved, as is the deep conditioning treatment. The one thing i did think i forgot to mention is the leave-in does have hydrolyzed soap protein in it, but i would definitely recommend this product now. Moving on to the creams, uh. One thing i wanted to mention that i thought was really interesting was after refreshing, the sides of my hair kind of equalized out uh yesterday on day, one they were very drastically different, and today they really don't look too different. So that is something i wanted to point out, and that is part of also what tells me that it is my fault for how i use these products that i over moisturize my hair is that, once i removed some of that product, my results just look amazing And fantastic and i'm really happy with them that being said, moving from product to product, so the first one i want to touch on is the vanilla cream custard. This does have a little bit more hold to it, so it's probably more likely that i would reach for this one, not only that, but it has a little bit more of a pleasant scent that i personally like it's just a lot sweeter and a lot more Airy and i really liked this product - and i really do like how it made my hair look and feel um. I will do some more experimenting with this in the future. Moving on to the twisted definition, this really wasn't formulated for my hair, but i think it still gave me some pretty good results, especially after refreshing and taking some of that extra product out. I still do have a lot of definition and my hair does feel very healthy and moisturized, so i will probably continue to experiment with this. If you are curious to see what any of these products look like paired with a gel, let me know - and i will make another video where i experiment with these products a little bit more. That being said, i would recommend all of these products just depending on what it is you're looking for and what you need for your hair. The one thing i have learned that i would not recommend is layering these products. I definitely use too much on my hair. Moisturize my hair too much if you like, content like this, please like and subscribe, it helps me out a ton and i do post a new video every tuesday. So hopefully i will see you next time. You

Jody Wagner: I'd like to see the custard paired with a gel.
