Hey friends, welcome back to my channel or, if you're new, my name is alyssa marie welcome. So today we are talking about hair density and i have to be real with y'all, because i've been natural, almost two. Actually it's almost three years now, three years in december, and i literally have not taken density into account at all. So of course you know, as i've learned it, i got ta come right here and share the knowledge with you. So i really think that this might be something that's a little bit game changing. I genuinely think it's really important to know so, let's go ahead and just jump right in we're going to dive right in to the deep end, all right. So what the heck is hair density and it's real, simple, okay, hair density - is just referring to the amount of hairs that you have on your head. Simple plain, that's it! So, if you have high density, you've got a lot of hairs on your head. Those are more of the hair types that you kind of tend to call more thick, more big hair. On the opposite side, there is low density, so you don't have as much hairs on your head, so your hair can tend to look a little bit more thin and a little bit more flat and then medium density is obviously kind of like a normal average amount Of hairs on your head, so there are two things that knowing your hair density is actually really going to impact, and that is your hairstyle and your actual haircut and then also the type of products that you use. So first, let's talk about haircuts and hairstyles. So for my low density girls, since your focus is usually more on increasing volume, you're going to want to go for cuts that are a little bit more blunt and also that have shorter layers kind of towards the top. It'S really going to help to kind of increase the amount of volume and body that your hair kind of has. I personally have come to the realization that i am medium to low density, even though i've always like considered my hair is big. Super curly and super thick, it is actually in fact, medium to low density. So that's why i feel like this style, you know with my shorter layers here and my bangs and stuff. It has really helped to increase the amount of volume in my curls, which i absolutely love now, on the opposite end for somebody with higher density, your hair is already thick honey. It already has all the body that you need, and sometimes you might even find, that it's a little bit too much volume for you. So what you can do in terms of your haircut and your hairstyle, you can make sure that you go for longer layers. When you have longer layers. Your hair is going to kind of weigh itself down a little bit more, so you'll still have your natural, regular kind of volume, because your hair is still in fact high density, but with the longer layers it's going to kind of cast it downwards a little bit And just kind of just bring it down. In general, like my high density, girls are going to be the ones whose hair like grows up and out for the longest time before it actually grows downwards because, like especially for curly hair, when you have a lot of it, it's just going to be boom like Out there right and there's nothing wrong with that, embrace it love it, but if you are trying to kind of cut down on the amount of volume, long layers will definitely be one option for you. So, like i mentioned another reason why it's important to know your hair density is because of products. Products are going to be huge so for my low density, peeps, of course, like i said, we're, focusing more on trying to increase volume as much as possible. You'Re going to want to use a lot more lightweight products and again, like after i started really getting into hair density. I was like wow, like you guys, have heard me in my other videos. I prefer lightweight products. My hair just seems to prefer it and just like that, and that is lo and behold, because your girl has medium to low density hair when i use leave-in conditioners that are too thick or gels that are like too crunchy and just too hard for my hair. I find that my hair will literally like sit like this for the first two days and it will take a lot more time for it to fluff, get a little bit more frizzy and then that's when i'll be able to achieve my volume. But lately i have really been working hard and trying to figure out how i can get my wash and go to look right and to look really good on day. One and that's definitely by using lighter weight, leave-in conditioners and lighter weight gels. And if you guys have seen my latest wash and go routine, you see that i've been loving the we dad gels so so much and that's because their consistency is so light. My curls are still able to just breathe and be nice and fluffy. You know, and i just feel like that gel just works really well, so i would personally recommend for you, if you do struggle with really low density hair. This is definitely a gel that you should really check out. I 110 recommend because you're still able to get the hold, but without it weighing down your curls, it's like the perfect recipe for low density curls. Now, on the opposite end for my high density peeps, you should definitely be going for the thicker products, the heavier more jelly kind of like stronghold gels like those are going to be your best friend. So for me, i still really love curl maker for my hair, like i said i am medium to low, but for my high density girls, i would definitely suggest that you use curl maker fully on your head of hair. In my video i showed that i only kind of use it as a finisher, otherwise it'll be a little bit too heavy for me, but my high density girls will absolutely love it because it is so good for hold and it will really kind of control. Your super thick high density, hair you'll also maybe want to go towards leaving conditioners that are a little bit on the heavier side, a little bit more buttery and like kind of a little bit thicker in consistency, because you have so much hair. I would also suggest that when you're styling, you use smaller sections for me. Sometimes i can get away with like just two sections like one half and then the other half and then that's kind of it. But for my high density girls, i definitely recommend you really make the sections even smaller, on your wash and go's to make sure that you're actually coating every single hair with product by doing bigger sections with high density hair. You are missing that, like those middle hairs like right in the middle, the product is not going to be able to get all the way in there. So you just want to make sure take the time to smaller sections and you might find that your wash and gos are looking better than ever. For my medium density peeps, you really don't have to stress too much one way or the other. You can kind of just go the way i've been going and just really listen to your curls and figure out exactly how you like your hair, to look so now that you know exactly what works really well for super low and what works really well for super High, you can then decide based on your personal preference, of how you, like your hair, to look to do whatever you want to do. That will get you to achieve that look. My main kind of goal for this video is that if you have been struggling with volume, maybe you have low density, and now you know what you need to do in order to combat that oppositely. If you have just been struggling with too much hair on your head, you feel like it's too much. It'S too crazy. Your wash and glows aren't coming out right now. You know what you can do to maybe fix it and get it a little bit more under control. So with all that in mind, i need to also tell you guys how the heck to determine what your hair density is, and it's really easy. It'S not as complicated or like weird as some of the hair porosity tests, so there's really two kind of easy ways. The first thing is to kind of just shake your head, you know and let your hair fall where it may and if you can see your scalp, i don't know if the camera is picking this up, but you know how you can always see, like my scalp. Really, naturally, here that is kind of one sign that you have more lower density hair. You do kind of part your hair as well. You can look and see you can see my parts look quite large if you're more medium density, you may still be able to see your scalp, but the space might not be as large as it is here and then, if you have really really high density curls, You might not even be able to see your scalp at all or, if you do see your scalp, it's a really really thin scalp line that you do see. So that's kind of one super easy way that you can determine what your hair density is. The second way is also another easy way, so you just go ahead and kind of try and clip your hair back, just even in your hands honestly into a ponytail. So i mean you can see here so the base of my ponytail, like my hair, can go really tight if that makes any sense, so the base of my ponytail was actually kind of about this small. It'S crazy. Because again, i feel like i have really big hair, but when i really go and put it back into a ponytail, it can really go really really small. So the smaller the base of your ponytail is is the lower density hair that you have when you have a lot of hair on your head, it's not going to be easy to kind of clip your hair back up into a ponytail, so you might find that Your circle is like big or like girl. I can't even clasp my fingers together. That means that you probably have a high density hair, it's kind of crazy for me because i feel, like i've, never actually thought of my hair being slightly on the thinner side like never because y'all see like it's. It'S she's got volume she's pretty big, but when i did all the tests - and i you know - i look at my scalp like this - is always there - it's actually hard for me to hide this. When i do my wash and go's you guys have seen in my wash and go videos where i literally just shake my head and then the part is like already kind of there and that's like a huge sign of lower density hair. So, even though you might feel like you know, my hair is big, so i got ta lather, some like heavy things on that. That might not be the case, and that might be why you're not achieving the results that you want to achieve. So basically, this is going to affect how you approach your entire natural hair. Regimen. It'S really going to help. You figure out exactly what you need to do in order to get the results that you want and that's it that's basically it for density, nothing complicated, which is what i really love about it. It'S not complicated, but it's definitely impactful. You know like it can definitely make a difference. If you guys have any additional questions for me, you can always go ahead and comment below. Actually you know what, when you do your little hair density test comment below and let me know what your hair density is. I'M kind of curious to see like what my other curly girls are dealing with. Are we mostly high over here? Are we mostly low? Are we mid to low kind of like what i'm dealing with? Let me know below. I'M super curious to see. I hope this really helped you out and that you found it super useful if you did go ahead and give your girl a thumbs up and also don't forget to subscribe. If you are new here, just consider you know hitting that subscribe button. We have lots of fun over here. Okay, thanks so much for watching guys, i will catch you in the next one bye, you

Myrna J: Yess I'm here for this. I don't know my hair density. Is it just me or when I see your videos your hair grows more and more.✔❤

Sarah Luv: If you have medium-low density hair, then I’m bald

Shari-Lee Davis: Same sis! I have low density, low porosity and fine hair. I actually learned my density when I flat ironed my hair and didnt get that "thick" look when I put in a pony. I prefer lightweight leave ins, curl milks and mousse!

Felicia W: High density doesn't always mean big. You can have fine strands. That's me! I get volume it just takes a few days eventho I have a lot of hair.

gksrblue21: Also for the hair part test, make sure you're testing it in an area where you don't normally part your hair! I tend to part my hair either on the left or the middle and my hair has become accustomed to that, so those parts look a lot wider and more visible than the other areas of my head. I'm still medium to high density though!

TwinGemz: Just learned that I have medium density by doing these tests. Now I realize why I can't get the volume I'm looking for with braid outs and twist outs, but I have no problem getting the necessary volume with wash and goes. I always felt like my hair was very dense, but I learned something today. Thanks for the video.

Chungu Chibwe: My only problem with being high density is requiring large dollops of products, more sections, needing more extensions when braiding and my hair being incharge of how it wants to be worn when I have it out but I love it either way ❤

Janet Mugo: Hey girl! Definitely low density high porosity on this side. I lean towards thicker products. Now I know why my hair stays flat and bodyless. The amount of stuff I learn on this channel

Digna’s View: I am also mid to low density, and just like you, I thought I had high density! Thank you for the tips and the info! ‍‍‍‍

Stephanie R.: I recommend Greenbeauty (yt channel) over this topic, paused at 0:28. I feel you might actually be high density. ♡ I believe she recommends putting our hair into a natural ponytail & seeing its size compared to a quarter. So if it's ponytail (in the back) is bigger than a quarter size, it's high density. If it's just about or similar to the quarter, medium density. If its quarter is bigger... low density. She's a chemist!

Nicole K: Thank you so much for this vid!!! I was the same; alot of hair on my head thinking I had big thick hair, BUT I struggle with volume and never really knew why. This def makes sense. I have low/med density hair!!! Thank you sis! Now I know what to ask for when going in for my next hair appt as well as keepin in mind my styling products. Light and if heavy dont use so much!!! :)

Shal Perk: So true - I’m high to medium density and girl. I’m medium density in the front and the opposite in the back. So hard to keep my curls from tangling. I have to Deep Condition Fo My life. I’ve never had an issue with parting my hair, since my lower density is up front - but yes it took the entire two years for my hair to fall - start growing down. I’m now at 2 years and 9 months !!!!! Also my products are Cantu Curl Activating Moisturizer and eco gel ( olive oil, argon, crystal, pink wave curl - - either one). I can refresh with light mist of water, moose ( curl talk ) and oil ( almond oil ).

Claudia Okyere-Fosu: Smaller sections, heavier styling products for my high density hair - got it. Thanks sis

Donna Chi: Hope this helps someone with low density Low density: standing against a white wall, if you can see through your hair and see the white wall, you have low density. Without touching of manually manipulating your hair and you can see your scalp, you have low denisty. If you touch your hair to show your scalp could be that you just have medium density I think your part is always there cause of styling your hair like that for years, so now your hair grows away from the part. The ponytail test shouldn't be so tight in your hands, trying this method you have to hold your hair loosely in de ponytail, and if your fingers don't touch, don't try to force it to touch, cause then you're holding it too tight and you will think you have low density And also the Bobby pin method, if you put a Bobby pin in your hair and it stays loose and wants to fall out, you have low density. There are more methods to really determine density of hair. Thnaks for this video Alyssa, hope this helps other people to try and determine there right density. ❤️

Moriah Hill: I have medium density for a natural hair. I always try to follow the big youtubers natural hair you routines, but my hair does not thrive with a bunch of products layered. Lately I have been doing one and dones or maybe add some oil to seal. Jane carter incredible curls has been my favorite 1 and done and I only style My hair in 2 sections!

MimiCoilyCurls: Just learned that I have Low density hair. I try my hardest to hide my part in the middle and always fail. Good to know!!

Kimberly Williams Plummer: Your hair, the curls, the texture, the shape.....are gorgeous. Length goals. I was almost there and then trimmed it myself and cut a little too much. I am low porosity, med/high density with fine strands. So...I lot a lot of hair but each strand of hair is smaller in diameter. I already use medium to thinner butters (but not hair milks) and lightweight gel with light/medium hold and my does well.

Kalia Wade: Thanks for the knowledge Lyss! Knowledge is power

Fariha Neel: I am still confused :3 by the looks of it I thought i have low-medium density hair. Very flat and you can always always see my part. like from miles away. Also because my hair had become really thin over the last couple of years what I noticed from my ponytails and braids. But I did the ponytail test today and it falls under the high density range :3

Renee G.: Yaayyy! Needed this! I knew I had low to med density but needed these tips! Thanks for sharing

Cam: Your hair looks fabulous! Has the humidity broken in GA? It has in FL, which means more length for me! My hair is the same density as yours and we use the same gels! I do enjoy LUS brands kinky styler though. That’s my go-to. That whole line!

Ja'Monet: Love that I can come back and get reminded about these tips! ☺️

Nikki Nicole: This was super informative. Thank you so much

Kris U: Medium-low porosity, medium strand, VERY high density. I swear I have literally billions of curls on my head. I can’t grab all my hair in one hand if I really really tried.

Sylvia Denise: So helpful. I have been trying to figure out how to tackle this high density hair lol! I love it but it's a lot of it.Thank you

Diane S: I already know I’m medium to low density, low to medium porosity with thick strands which makes my hair appear bigger. *** Ladies if you want to try Quidad Ulta has the travel size 3 for the price of one. They are normally $10.00 each. I jumped on it because I have been wanting to try this product. I also got the curl creme 3 for $10. All travel sizes. I just ordered and will pick up later today. (Nov. 6) I don’t know how long the sale will be.

rmsnyman: Sorry...I also have to comment on your hair growth Allyssa...it's crazy how obvious the difference is every week!!what are you doing girl??come on...you got to share the secret!!!

TrishD LV Luver: Yeap. I am definitely a high density girl. I am 1 year post big chop and this stuff won't drop at all.. .lol

Aisha Johnson: I went from high density to low density in one year due to hypothyroidism. ‍♀️who knows, maybe my thick hair may grow back once my health is under control

Curls By Nat: After being natural since 2007 I always thought I have fine low density. The testing I did was on wet hair‍♀ then I realized it was all wrong. Then I try washing and leave it alone to dry. Then I found out I have fine medium density . Now, this is a whole new game changer for me now my products will need to be lighter, and play with mousse, light gels, and foams.

Karlilee: Hi , I just started my natural journey yesterday and cut off most of my natural hair and I can ament I do feel insecure and messing my relaxed hair ‍♀️, wt motivated you too keep staying natural, and I love ur hair by the way

June Elizabeth: This was very helpful! Thank you so much! Now I know why the products I've been using are hit and miss on my wash n go’s! I appreciate you!

Ursula Evans: That was pretty useful. Thank you. How about Mielle Sculpting Custard? I think I have medium density hair. Which products would you recommend? I used Uncle Finley’s daughter and it was great for curl definition but a bit too much hold. Half my head is 4a but front is very different. Possibly 4b.

Reedah diaries: Very informative! Great work! Love your hair!

July Martinez: Very useful video , I am medium to low density, fine hair and low porosity

Brittany: I have low porosity, thick/coarse strands and high density. My stylist put short layers into my hair. As if I didn't have enough volume already I didn't understand the difference in cutting layers and she didn't make sure I understood correctly. She was just happy to cut instead of really making sure she understood what I wanted. Sigh. Now I need to grow out these layers again. Layers are tricky

Tyra Foster: My hair is high density, but it's also low porosity making it a struggle to find products

Mia B.: I always thought I was high, but after the tests, I’m definitely low-med density

T. Barnes: Thank you for the information. I knew what my porosity is but did not know my density. So I have low porosity and between low/med density.

King hill: Love the video girl keep up the good work tips are a amazing

Chistina McGaw: Very informative- think I'm med to low My hair loves creams and light-weight gel, super flat on day 1; volume comes on day 2 or so. I guess that explains why my hair looks heavy n weighed down with curlmaker and last >5 days, lol

Josh Hutton: Hi Alisa great video, I have medium density hair, I am actually a girl my name is Lyanna, when my mum was setting up my phone she put my brothers name I'm instead of mine. I am a natural girl I am 12 years old and I just big chopped my hair and I love yr videos. Remember Jesus is coming. Byeee

Yana Martin: I have High density and normal/high porosity hair and boy oh boy is it WORK. I have to do minimum 8 sections to get good product distribution. I envy people who do big sections

Piffy 20: I’m low density here thanks for the lesson

Sharon Obrien: I have learned so much since I have started following you

CocoB: I always assumed I had completley high density hair but when I straighten my hair I can tell lol. Its low porosity, medium to high density.

tamaya tait: Thank you for this. Never really thought about it. But I think definitely low

Bri: is it just me or did her hair get longer in the blink of an eye

Claye M.: This is the best video I’ve seen on simple ways to determine hair density! That said...my density is off the charts high. Lol there is no clasping my hair together with one hand and what’s a scalp... I don’t think I have one cuz I definitely can’t see it

Jessica Donaldson: I’m high density and this is the truth.

Leila♡: I have high density. Fine strands. Low porosity. High oil production. Damaged 4a/4b curls

RR Parker: WOW...your hair is amazing!!!! I can hardly listen to what you’re saying... I’m stunned by your hair Gorgeous

#DopeeSoul #TheGamerMom: Thanks girl!

Melissa Kemunto: Medium/High porosity Fine strands Medium density

Katurah Roby: Your hair has grown so much love the length

Jasmine Bresnihan: Your curls are beautiful ☺️

Tracey Williams: I’m high density and o break every hair tie, even the puff cuff.

Deborah Woods: I definitely have low-density hair but it's also high-porosity hair, Go figure.

Kenzie Kenz: those tests were so helpful!

Fatima Irving: Thank you. Now I know. Much appreciated

D WALLACE: My hair suddenly makes sense to me .... Thx Alyssa

Chanty Charmes: check out the lenght on you❤️✊I am low/medium density and also cut my hair in lengths. Thanks for the tip

L Hunt: I definitely have low density hair.

Katelyn Hendricks: my hair is low to medium but I think more on the medium side ✨

Talia Potter: With all that you said, my hair is for sure High density.. but I still can not get my hair together

SCH SAS: Thick hair strands, medium to low density. Because my hair strands are thick I do get a lot of volume in styles. Truly deceiving hair lol

Kayla Owens: I never knew my density either but I for sure have low density

Aubrey Garmon: hmm I have super high density, but the strands are very fine and sealed tightly (low porosity) so using heavy products my hair never dries or defines or any products really... sometimes I think maybe my hair is too healthy and some color or occasional heat might balance my porosity? I need a strong hold, protein sensitive moisturizer and styler

Willowy13: Yeah... you have low density hair and I am bald. You are mixing hair thickness/volume with density, which is the amount of hair you have for a certain space in your head (cm2 or feet2). You are not low density. Nobody can see your scalp through this beautiful mane of hair honey.

Sauce God: Definitely high density. Not sure of the porosity though..

Facesbyt. Michelle on IG: I think I’m med to high.. I have short hair, growing it out, but no automatic parts, super big when air dry! Then again... I could be wrong!

Shawndinae: Hair crush!!! Love your channel.

Brandon Bernard: Low porosity Medium density Fine/medium hair

Noor Denner: I’m low density for sure

TNicole: High density, hair porosity hair and thick hair strands

Forthecurlies: I’m pretty sure I have low density, medium porosity hair.

colleen smith: Love your hair

Its_TaesWay: First of allllllll.... ️COME THROUGH STRETCHHHHHH!

Su: I have low density hair, so low my partitions look like Panama Waterway

E rA: Low to medium density. I didn't know

Leila♡: ❤❤❤❤

Kiara L: I’m thinking mid to low density

adeola: I have high density, high porosity, and fine hair strands

Vanessa Glasgow: So density and porosity tests are recommended

Nai H.: This video was made for me lol

Naeemah Hollis: My hair is highly dense

Jana Khabouri: How can I increase the density of my hair?

Angela B: im medium low like you

Evi: How is it low?

Naturally new to the game 😉: High density

Brandi Tilley: Low density

serena says hi: I have high density hair but it grows down and it’s long. Please how do I get low density?

Dapheney Duffaut: Low definitely
