How To Cut Curly Hair At Home

How I cut my curly hair at home. I'm saying no more to layers.. it's not an easy process to grow them out, and it requires frequent at-home trims. In this video, I will show you how I trim my hair at home, how I manage my gray fly-aways, and keep up with breakage and split ends.

Hello, it's me janelle from the future. I just trim my own hair at home. Diy trim my own hair and that's what i am. I don't know what those jazz hands were, but they just came from deep inside me in today's video. I'M going to show you how i trim my hair at home. You saw my last upload why i'm no longer adding layers to my curly hair. You know why we're here, if not watch, that video get caught up and then come back and see me in today's video, i'm going to show you how i trim my hair at home and what i'm doing to balance out the layers that i do have so. Ultimately, they all connect in the long run. I keep dead ends off and how i trim my hair minimally, so i'm keeping it healthy, but i'm still ultimately getting that length. So i can get rid of those few last pesky layers that i'm over that i can get back to living my most voluminous, full high density appearing life. Also, if you have gray hairs that don't always cooperate and hang lower than the rest of your curls, i've got a tip for you in this video as well. I'M sorry, i'm sure some cultures find it rude to point and i apologize no disrespect all right. Janelle from the future, let's get into this video, my sweater is backwards because i have a stain on the front and i am nervous. I'Ve cut my hair many times. I'Ve never done on camera, so i'm a little nervous to walk you through it. Something to keep in mind is: i have had two haircuts with a stylist here in philly um i'll link her down below, but i have been trimming it in between um now we're ready for that trim. So, let's do it first thing: you'll notice, my hair is like super stretched out. I'Ve been wearing beanies, it's been snowing um and i actually prefer to trim my hair initially when my hair is stretched out. So it gives me a more obvious visual of like where my layers are at it's easier to see what areas are damaged. What needs some length to come off that kind of thing. I do also cut it once it's styled and i'll show you that in a little bit, this is how i start out with my trimming, and you don't necessarily have to let your hair go a few days. You can also just dry detangle it. So it's just easy to work through. I do not like to add water to it. I don't want to add anything. That'S going to stretch my hair further, i tend to work on like each half and i tend to work mostly from the front first thing. I do is kind of evaluate like where things are at this side. Most of the layers are back. This is a layer that i'll probably keep shorter, but my main focus is here pretty much. This section root to tip is, for the most part, pretty even and it's about the same width from root to tip more obvious when my hair is curly, but like a few of these places like especially around my ears, you can see that it is definitely more Sparse towards the end, it thins out quite a bit, and it's not quite as long. This is one of the layers on both sides of my head that i'm working on growing out as you can see there, there's a substantial length difference and it definitely thins out towards the ends, and this is an area here like nape of the neck. At the temples these areas tend to be for most people. Definitely, for me they tend to be finer and more prone to breakage anyways, so some of that is not completely abnormal before the last two layered cuts that i did. These areas by my ears were actually the same length and density um. Adding layers to them was like the worst thing i ever did because a it's, the perimeter, you want to keep your perimeter intact perimeter. You know what goes around along um, but then on top of that, they're also the hardest for me to grow out a because if they don't have the power in numbers, but then also because they are already prone to breakage the other area that i have a Lot of focus on is kind of this back section, i'm literally within, like probably an inch to two inches max of most of my hair being the same layer, but it really falls out this last like half inch, and that is the case for most the back Of my hair, but the middle back of my hair is the worst it's the section that saw the most damage sick of having short hair y'all. I could probably could have had waist length hair, so i've been slowly bringing it up to meet the rest. I'M not completely getting rid of my length, but i'm bringing it up enough, so it has that protection in numbers. I want the thickness all the way to the ends. So let's get into this trim. So the first thing scissors do matter um. These aren't the most expensive scissors. I'Ve got them off of amazon. I will link them in the description. You know when you cut a piece of paper and it just glides right through when you have really good fresh, sharp scissors and then let's say you don't have really good sharp scissors and you cut a piece of paper and it gets all those jagged edges. That'S what's gon na happen to your hair and it's actually going to cause more damage more breakage in the long run, diy hack to ensure that they are at peak performance. Is i use a little bit of sandpaper and every time i go to trim my hair? I just cut into the sandpaper: it's not the best way to sharpen scissors, but it works really well. The first thing i'm going to do is pretty much from my temples. It'S like eyebrows straight back to temples, as i am going to move this top layer out of the way, as i mentioned, that last video. This is the layer that holds my face framing pieces and where i don't mind, keeping a little bit shorter than the rest of my hair, because then it adds a little bit of shape volume. All of that, this is the section that i am trying to get to one length and, as i said like from the back, it's almost there from the back. I want it to have a long, exaggerated, u-shape number one. I hate the v. I don't like how it looks um at all, especially on my hair type. I think some people with like higher density and like really thick textures, can pull it off, but most people, if you don't, have a really high density and if you have fine hair, you just end up with these scraggly pieces at the bottom and not enough support And i just it's not for me if you love it, i'm not coming for you my opinion, but that's how i feel um. But the? U is important because the tapering at the sides allows it when it comes forward to have the very square appearance going to part it down the middle. Most time i don't use a comb, i'm trying to be professional for y'all. I learned this actually from maids by mel. I used to just do it straight on bring it forward, but i actually learned from her that if you turn your head to the side, turning to the side bringing down and i'm slightly bringing it forward again, combed it forward with my head turned got it forward. A little bit diagonally and then here i'm just going to trim these ends, and then this little section that i didn't trim at all that fell out. What i'm going to do is just grab it. I just barely snip those ends just so that it is gathering solidly at a point getting it just enough, so that it has fresh ends without really taking off any length, and the truth is is that little bit of dusting ultimately makes the hair look fuller, and In a lot of cases longer um, because it's not all those scraggly pieces that divert your eye down, so it's i'm really like that is really what i'm focusing on is just getting that solid shape. So this side, because i have the bigger gap here - it's a little bit trickier and i'm again, i'm not going to bring all of this up to this piece. Okay, so on this side, i'm actually going to take a little bit more um. I have a chunk of my hair right behind my ear. It'S probably like the thickest juiciest curl i have in my head, but it also tends to grow a little bit faster, so i tend to take off that corner anyways. So i'm going to trim a little bit more but same thing we're just coming here and evening things out nice clean line, then pull forward looks pretty square. So now, what's going to happen, i'm going to go wash it and i'm going to style it. So with this top layer and anything else, i want to trim it once it is styled, so i can actually see the where the curls are laying, because i'm just seeking growth and root to tip density on all of these curls. The focus really is going to just be just slightly dusting the ends so that they're solid. It'S not always the perfect shape, because again they're growing out, i take as little as possible, but as much as is needed, so that i don't see further damage that these layers don't continue going up, i'm going to wash style my hair, i will see you on The flip side - and i will show you how i finish it up - i'm taking my time today expect darkness and we're back with a pretty bomb wash day. If i do say so myself. If you want to see this wash day, it will be going up on my instagram. So if you're not following me, there be sure to follow now. What i like to do at this point, um - and i feel like this - is one of the most important aspects in terms of if you want to play with your shape, but then also really be sure that you're getting the dead ends off earlier. We just mainly got the the base most of the perimeter. Now i'm going to go through and really kind of go curl by curl and trim. You could clip this section off, but i'm not going to because when i trim the ends, i consider two things. I consider how much needs to come off of it, but then also where it's going to lay as long as there's not split ends like way high up, i cut as little as i can off of it, while getting as much as it needs. Does that make sense if it has split ends? I just trim it especially with this top layer. One of the reasons i like doing it once my hair is styled is because then i can see where the hair is laying. I can see the natural curl clumps. I can trim based off of that. You can kind of see that it starts to get sparse right about here. You want to trim it um in the c of the curl, and i want to trim it in a place where it's going to be blunt. So so we've got c and the c starting here so i'm going to trim just right here. Let me make sure you can see it. So again you got to see c kind of forming there and i'm going to blunt cut it up. Had my hair trimmed about two months ago now, um my hair in most places is not super in need, so i'm being being more so selective and i'm really just going to focus on the top layer like around my ears at the nape of my neck. It tends to see the most damage and i just want to ensure that my curls are going to grow out healthy, i'm going to be able to maintain that length and that eventually they will get root to tip density. Sometimes i will just kind of guide the curl back into its shape, like if it's a little out or if there's a couple hairs just so i can really see. I just grabbed this little scraggler and it is a mess. I probably separated it from the group that it wanted to be in um. Ideally so look you can see where the density ends off. It definitely starts to get thinner here, but especially down here, so because i'm not a hundred percent positive. This is its own little. Guy, if it was part of a curl cluster and just got separated, whether in styling or whatever, i'm not going to really take much length off. But i see some split ends for sure. I see some fairy knots and so i'm going to cut them and see how short these ones are actually come down to about the length of the rest of my hair, but they bounce up the most. I probably trimmed this little these little sections once a month or so just barely just enough to give it a solid blunt end. The other thing that i kind of look for are these like pieces that are just not really curling or like in an ideal world. I would probably chop this off quite a bit, but we're on a growth journey, so not gon na do that, but we are gon na take a little bit more from the bottom. Something to keep in mind is you: do really want to hold the curl loosely. You want it to be in it's in its most natural shape as much as possible, like look at this little wonky thing, so i'm gon na go! Oh, where is this one? Okay? This is kind of the back top, so i'm going to cut a decent amount off of this one because it just is like a mess. I'M going to cut it right here, so the pieces that i'm pulling from the back i like to bring it forward kind of hold it loosely something i also do to my grays in this area. I don't really do it in other places, because i don't notice it it's not framing my face, but a lot of times um. I have some gray hairs that tend to be a way looser curl pattern like borderline, even straight and sometimes we'll just not curl with. What'S going on here, and so, especially once my hair is really styled, i always want to do it. My hair is really styled if there are still grays that are sticking out under here. I just trim them just under where the rest of my hair is falling. Maybe it's slightly longer because they will ultimately bounce up, but then that way i don't have the like gray scragglies down here. Eventually, i would like to have these layers sl a little shorter than the rest of this, but because some layers were put in and around my ears, you still see that they go up a little bit. I'Ve been keeping it just enough that it kind of covers them, not a big fan of the diamond. Look right so leaving my bangs a little bit longer, so they fill in this space until these layers grow out, and can do that. Another thing that i like to do is i like to flip over one of the things that helps me see, and it makes it more obvious, as you can see like look how the front pieces are longer than here essentially trying to fill this gap. Ultimately, this more so makes a straight line before i got the layers. This was a very solid line, so it's good to see your hair flipped over, because you can see kind of where fullness is lacking and where there's some unevenness. So the last thing that i do baby baby - i need you so the last thing that i do and not all you will have access to this. Not all of you will trust your significant other to trim your hair, daniel, and i have had many goes at this, but every time i trim my hair um. I have him come and look at it from the back and essentially make sure that it's straight is it straight yeah, it's pretty straight. Is there anything that you would cut? Is there anything like hanging down? No. Does it look like it's doing like this and then slowly going up, or does it look more v? No, what do you say perfect welcome here we go. That'S how i trim my hair at home. I feel like it actually looks really good too. It'S almost very all it's almost there f layers for good just kidding. I still want a little bit, but up top we talked about it. Okay, a couple quick tips before you attempt this at home. Less is more so. I trim my hair on wash day. I can easily go back in if i miss something that kind of thing, so just don't get overzealous, it's so easy to do. I'Ve done it. You can take more off. You can't put it back on number one rule highly recommend dry cuts period, especially if you have multiple curl patterns and especially if you are not used to cutting your hair at home, avoid water water is going to stretch your hair out and it's easier to take Off more than what is intended, if you have never attempted trimming your hair before, especially your curls, do it dry do not start with wet all right y'all! That'S it for this video. Thank you for watching. I really hope this helped gave you some insight. If you do have any questions, please comment them down below. I will be down there in the comment. Chappysmom: Curl by curl is always tricky for me because I always assume my curls are clumping with different clusters every single wash day, so a clump today is probably going to be twisting with its neighbors tomorrow (grin). But yes, all of this. And getting the ends straight in the back is the hardest part! You did a great job!

Erica deBin: I love finding hair cutting tutorials! I started cutting my own hair 10 years ago because I got tired of always having to fix it myself when I got home from a stylist. Now I'm wearing it wavy and it's a slightly different ball game so this is helpful!

D Ebner: Thank you! Someone who has hair like mine, greying, especially on the side top, just like you and it's pretty much straight. I started letting my hair grow, when I started my wavy/curly journey, just over 2 years ago. I tried cutting it myself the 1st time & did a hack job, having like 3 inch layer difference, from the bottom to the next layer, like a shelf. Ugh! Thank to you, Jannelle, I think I can fix it without going to a beautician and spending $40 or so. I can't wait for my next wash day. I have been cutting curl-by-curl, too.

Michelle M_: I KNEW IT! I thought my hair seemed much fuller without layers, but I asked a stylist and she acted like I had no idea what I was talking about. Thank you!!

Amanda Vaday: This is extremely helpful. Never seen anyone else who has the same curl pattern as me! I felt like I was watching myself! Thank you.

spirals 73: PSA: You can cut through several thicknesses of foil to sharpen your scissors if you don't have any sandpaper. Also, it is possible to get curly hair to long. I was at tailbone until last week. I had 1.5" trimmed and now I'm just past hip.

Susan Zimnick: I would love to see an updated DIY curly cut from you if you are still doing this! I would love to see how your hair looks now that you are adding fewer layers.

have3kids too: Well, I must say that this video and your no layers video has explained why the back of my hair looks stringy. I have been doing this cg method for about 5 years now. My hair has gotten thinner and shorter because I thought I needed layers to get body. I was looking at a picture of myself from about 3 years ago. My hair was much longer, fuller, and still curly (2c-3b). I only had long layers, I always told my hairdresser: layer about 2-3 inches on the bottom and blend the front for some face framing layers. She always did a wonderful job. I never did all the product that I'm doing now, soon to stop though, and my hair was thick and full, and I always got comments about how beautiful my hair was. Over the last couple of years, I've noticed all the thinning, stringiness and just general lack of body and curl. I believe all the product, plopping, layering, pigtail cut, (which at first I liked), unicorn cut, etc. has ruined my hair. I think I'm going back to what I've been doing my whole life: wash, condition, put in towel to soak up a little water, gel, scrunch, and air dry, then scrunch out the crunch. I was doing all this way before I ever heard of the curly girl method. Looking at my hair then and looking at it now is disheartening. Thanks for these videos. Going back to what works for me.

Suna vB: Hi! Your previous video about no more layers was a real eye opener for me, this one makes it the icing on the cake. So thanks sis, cheers from the Netherlands.

Prothoroe: 2 months ago I trimmed my hair back 4". I didn't cut my hair for over a year. Today I am going to wash and style my hair and take a look at for a dry trim. Great video! Thanks!

Courtney Derouen: I went through a lot of hair loss and did lots of research in the natural hair community. I can say from personal experience that MSM powder and hair oils like mustard seed, amla, neem, different essentials oils and more potent hair oils (other than the basic ones) help to grow fast and regrow hair. Just throwing that out there for anyone that has slow hair growth .

Denise M: This was very helpful, Jannelle! I have cowlicks at the base of my hairline in the back which, because of the way most stylists cut hair, always look significantly longer than the rest of my hair. Could you possibly address this in the future? Thanks!

J Flo: Hi Jannelle-excellent video. Once your layers are grown out, how will you avoid the triangle shape? My layers are now grown out, but I find my naturally styled hair (wavy) looks a bit triangular. TY

Christine Dicks: Perfect! Thank you so very much!! ❤️

Pamperedhen: Jannelle, I could just hang out with you and have a blast! You are Light and Love! Thank you for always making my day when you put up a vid!! Happy Holidays! Much love ~ Robin

paulna85: The video I needed! The answer to my questions. Last video told me what was wrong and now this video will tell me what to do.

Illianora: Me needing another trim and currently sitting on day 6 stretched hair: This looks like a fun idea. LOL. Also am I the only one who loves their hair stretched sometimes? Like probably not wear it to work love, but going to the shops or being out on the street for a walk, some days you just really feel it working for you. Like obviously we love our waves/curls around here, but sometimes that really subtle look does wonders. Thanks for the vid Janelle! My first hackjob during quarantine wasn't fantastic, but most of it has grown back now so I'll definitely follow along with this to get a cleaner look.

Raechele White: This is soooo helpful! Thank you!

Laura MacBride: I needed this and your last video! I've been doing the pigtail Manes by Mell cut, and the ends in back are so sad! I look like I have no hair! Curse low density fine hair! This was super helpful for the length, do you have any other ideas for the top? I'm not confident enough to pull random curls and snip them! Also, are fairy knots all over an indicator of damage, or could it just be a side effect of fine hair? I trim every 4 weeks. Help!

Riley Delaney: Thank you so much!! Need these tips and guidance :)

Jinnie 🖤: Omg I’m about to grab my scissors and try this because it came out so pretty ❤️

jnorth9702: My hair is so much like yours, its uncanny. Thank you for sharing.

marisha773: I wish I had seen this 3 weeks ago I put in layers to try and get more volume, but instead it is making my hair look so much thinner!

Tara S: Thanks Jannelle. Very helpful. Is the idea to cut across the middle of the 'C' curl shape?

Ms. Peri Menopause: Love you and your energy

Stevie Ray: I have to have longer layers and cutting the back myself is a nightmare! I have learned over quarantine i can trim the top layers myself and the front, working on how to DIY the back for long layers. I am prone to the “dreaded triangle”, not sure how your hair avoids it

Tanya S: I trim my hair, once every 3-4 weeks. I wash it... then comb through it and flip my head down... chin on chest... and then gather my hair and snip off the very thin end on the tip. Then, I’ll finger comb and do this another once or twice... getting all of the scraggly bits. - Once every 6 months, I go for a professional blunt cut... (think of it like a bang trim, just pretty much straight across the back.)

DODGER FAN: Love how your ends look in the back. Sadly, mine still look somewhat scraggly. The shape you have in the back is what I'm hoping to achieve, but I'm an impatient person when it comes to my hair.

Autumn Edlen: All my curl struggles answered

Palmundo91: Really risky and can go really wrong for some people. Licensed, trained stylists are really the best option....a lot of people take things into their own hands and end up regretting it.

Kaley Nicholson: Our haircut is like the exact same now lol

Stephanie C1C: You look gorgeous! My hair is darker so I really can't stand my grey hair. Is it really bad for my curls to color my hair? (I'm just starting my curls journey.)

Katja A.A: Hi Janelle, I looove your energy ! I’m new to the cgm / wgm “game”. I’m looking for some sites or boards to get some more input and / or find others with a similar hair type as myself however NOT son FB. Any suggestions ? Thanks so much ! Fun Fact I’m German as well. :) Frohes Neues -Happy New Year

Louise Adams: I love your laugh thanks for the great videos

Camila Montiel: Can you make a drugstore/cheap curly hair rountine. I have 2c-3a curls. I’ve been looking for a great rountine without silicone and sulfate.my hair also stretches in the morning and is frizzy.

Nicole Stanovich: Half way. You are half way with it all. Keep being you. I enjoy your tips and tricks.. ...

Sarah K: Great tips, thanks! Happy holidays.

Alicia Hawkins: How often do you do this type of trim?

Giulia Lazzeri: How much time does it take you? Washing and styling parts apart obviously

Maryam ZRK: Looking forward to your 70,000K! Will send you to some friends

Maryam ZRK: Your happiness is contagiousI don't know why I'm feeling shy seeing your Mr. Daniel Engels commenting

Kristina Steputis:

Heidi Rosin: Say 'sharp scissors' 5 times in a row

Frankendoll: We have the same hair I swear!

Brenda Geier: I too am growi;ng out my layers, my hair is allmost to my boobs. Once the choppy layers grow back in and I get a thicker hemline, I may put in a couple of long layer around my face. I hated that the layers gave me thin ends. Why Janelle are you growing out your layers?

Em Beaulieu: Go big or go home ❤

Kimberly Giebler: I’ve been thinking of doing this...do you have Instagram?

Daniel Engels: First

KatyaFlo: "I hate the V" Jannelle babygirl you gotta try it before you knock it ..teeheeheehee
