Hi guys and welcome to everything here in today's video we're going to be talking about something that has been on the internet for a while. Now we're going to be talking about the no oils, no butters trends, slash movement, slash challenge and we're going to be doing a deep dive on what it means where it came from why it's so popular and whether or not you should think about joining this movement. To remove oils and butters from your hair routine, like many generations before us, coconut oil, jojoba oil, shea butter and the likes have always been a staple in our hair. I'M sure a lot of us can remember our mothers, oiling our scalp or greasing our scalp between her legs and it's a ritual. That'S almost like a rite of passage with every black person. So what does this phrase really mean, and why do we have a resounding message in the media or even curly hair specialists telling us that what we know and cherish about our hair and caring for it is not quite accurate? And if we want to have healthy hair, it's not the proper way to go about things, the phrase no oils and no butter literally means phasing out raw oils and butters from your routine. This means that the oils and butters on your hair should be from highly processed products, the movement to remove raw oils and butters from your regular hair care. Routine has been around for a while. Now we can trace the movement as far back as 2013, where jennifer rose a new york based stalin owner went viral. She warned against using oils and butters because they were too heavy and are not as effective in sealing moisture into your hair. Her advice was to have a three-step routine number. One is to wash your hair regularly with a sulfate free shampoo. Her second tip was to condition your hair with one conditioner. The last step in the three-step routine is to use one styling product, such as a gel or a foam to define your curls or coils. The 30-day head detox hashtag was also started to echo the same sentiments. The creators of black curl magic started this hashtag as a mind shift and a lifestyle change where you are challenged to go 30 days without raw shea butter, raw coconut oil, jojoba oil, castor oil and products that include such oils in the top five ingredients. More recently, a curly hair and lock educator, who teaches how to simplify your hair routine, went viral in 2021 on tick tock, and she claimed that oils and butters are making your hair more thirsty in her video. She was wetting, her client's hair and, while doing this, she emphasized that water is a source of hydration and oil and water do not mix the hair repels the water, which leads to dehydrated hair. There are many reasons why this movement is making waves. From the plain fact that a lot of black people, especially naturals, are tired of the idea that they have to buy so much product and spend so much time on hair as black people we've come a long way to loving and embracing our hair. However, we've come to the realization that we would love to cut wash day into wash hour. The three step method seems like an easy fix to maintain healthy hair, as well as save time and cost significantly. On the other hand, however, the no oil, no butter movement has also met a lot of pushback and criticism watching youtubers and vloggers like jane jackson, camille janae leila washington and stop puppy. These youtubers have all had very mixed reactions on the trend. Some people believe that it was the best thing that has ever happened to their hair. Aside from the fact that their hair felt light and not weighed down, they also felt like the hair was moisturized all through the week. We also had youtubers like star poppy, who said her scalp and hair was very dry and ashy. A lot of the criticism stemmed from the idea that scrapping oils and butters does not really work for tightly coiled hair. However, the people that love it love it. If you find that some things need to change with your routine and the no oil or butter trend will help you get your hair to its healthiest. Here are a few tips that might help according to camille janae, the three-step hair routine is recommended for wash and goes use a selfie free, clarifying shampoo to wash your hair every wash day to get rid of the build up, use a conditioner where the first five Ingredients are not oils or butters. Lastly, regularly trim your hair to get rid of splitting our advice to you is that it's best to do the 30 day head detox and see how your hair reacts to it before completely committing to the no oil or no butter movement. A curly, hair, stylist chloe elliot, advises that while you're doing this detox, keep your shampoo the same. Keep your conditioner the same and keep how you style your hair. The same give yourself a few weeks, let's say three wash days to see how your hair feels before you try. Something else, don't be the person that throws everything out and starts again, because you never know whether it's the shampoo or the conditioner that make the difference. The bottom line is that hair care is very versatile. As we always say on this channel, there is no one-size-fits-all approach to hair care. What works for others might not work perfectly for you don't be quick to throw away your creams and oils because of what you heard. If your hair doesn't suffer damage like breakage dryness or hair loss, then don't switch things up too quickly. Our parting question, for you today, is how important are oils and butters in your hair care routine.
